Then I realized💡 , the city had just cleared a path for the bride and groom to leave in their limo. It was just unbelievable they were thoughtful enough to leave the keys and a driver in case someone needed to borrow it for an emergency, or Nans would’ve missed her surgery. I didn’t need a driver, he was busy talking with someone anyway, and I’m a pro. Scar and Jost are just the best! Pray for my Nans y’all. Didn't care for her comments but to be fair, Ghost in the Shell was not her fault. I love anime and watch it all the time. 1) In the anime, you find out that her character previously had the body of a man. One of the points is that if a person could choose how they looked, what would they choose? What image would one choose to present to and navigate society in? In the film, they wanted to remove her connection to her Asian mother, so it would make sense to remove any features that would associate her with that identity. 2)You would have to be blind to not notice that very few characters in anime resemble Japanese people. I think this is part of its appeal and yet at the same time its Achilles heel. On one hand you appeal to a broader audience but on the other, why do most of the main characters resemble Europeans? I've always wondered why they seem to be so ashamed of showing themselves as they are. But that is just my own personal musings in observation.
you have to look at it from actors perspectives. lots of diverse actors of ethnicity/genders/religion in Holywood can't get roles bc the typical route is casting a white person. so when there is a one very rare chance that a japanese actress can play this role and be her breakthrough in career, and they choose to give it to Scarlett instead, that's what becomes a problem. heck they even cast a half-caucasian christian to play a female supporting role that always wears Hijab in Ms Marvel. how would the real islam actors working would feel if even these kind of small roles are taken from them? they can't even get other typical roles bc they have to wear Hijab for their beliefs all the time. even when the (very rare) right roles that suit them, got taken away by white actors. this is a bunch of people's way to make a living, we should stop seeing it in the "entertainment" perspective where everything is okay as long as it "makes sense to me" or "as long as it's enjoyable for me". but maybe that's just me cmiiw.
Honestly, citing the anime is a losing argument. You're better off pointing out the fact that the character Scarlett Johansson plays in the film is an Asian woman who was murdered by a giant evil corporation and her brain was put is a robot body that looks like Scarlett Johansson. I.E. her race was just one of a dozen things stolen from her along with her life, memories, free will, and humanity, etc... Yeah, it's still white washing, but the white washing is itself a major plot point worked into the second and third acts of the film. Really it's just a badly done version of the black face in tropic thunder. Robert Downey jr. succeeded where Scarlett Johansson failed because they tried to be coy about the race swap plot twist in her film, while they presented it as a main running gag in the first 2 minutes of his film.
She made a comment that she should be able to play any character. It wasn’t just Ghost in the Shell as a controversy. She was mad that the public didn’t want her to play a historical trans figure. The joke was about what she said.

In Jacksonville also, at Wolfsons children’s hospital, daughter fighting cancer. Yes people in Florida want you all to wear a mask, I don’t want any of you infecting me and therefore killing my child. Sometimes people get it together and make a successful marriage after a string of failures. Yes it's rare, but possible. My uncle was an idiot for a long time, married 4 times. He got his life together, married a gem for his 5th marriage and they've been together almost 20 years.

Didn't care for her comments but to be fair, Ghost in the Shell was not her fault. I love anime and watch it all the time.
1) In the anime, you find out that her character previously had the body of a man. One of the points is that if a person could choose how they looked, what would they choose? What image would one choose to present to and navigate society in? In the film, they wanted to remove her connection to her Asian mother, so it would make sense to remove any features that would associate her with that identity.
2)You would have to be blind to not notice that very few characters in anime resemble Japanese people. I think this is part of its appeal and yet at the same time its Achilles heel. On one hand you appeal to a broader audience but on the other, why do most of the main characters resemble Europeans?
I've always wondered why they seem to be so ashamed of showing themselves as they are. But that is just my own personal musings in observation.
you have to look at it from actors perspectives. lots of diverse actors of ethnicity/genders/religion in Holywood can't get roles bc the typical route is casting a white person.
so when there is a one very rare chance that a japanese actress can play this role and be her breakthrough in career, and they choose to give it to Scarlett instead, that's what becomes a problem.
heck they even cast a half-caucasian christian to play a female supporting role that always wears Hijab in Ms Marvel. how would the real islam actors working would feel if even these kind of small roles are taken from them? they can't even get other typical roles bc they have to wear Hijab for their beliefs all the time. even when the (very rare) right roles that suit them, got taken away by white actors.
this is a bunch of people's way to make a living, we should stop seeing it in the "entertainment" perspective where everything is okay as long as it "makes sense to me" or "as long as it's enjoyable for me". but maybe that's just me cmiiw.
Honestly, citing the anime is a losing argument. You're better off pointing out the fact that the character Scarlett Johansson plays in the film is an Asian woman who was murdered by a giant evil corporation and her brain was put is a robot body that looks like Scarlett Johansson. I.E. her race was just one of a dozen things stolen from her along with her life, memories, free will, and humanity, etc... Yeah, it's still white washing, but the white washing is itself a major plot point worked into the second and third acts of the film.
Really it's just a badly done version of the black face in tropic thunder. Robert Downey jr. succeeded where Scarlett Johansson failed because they tried to be coy about the race swap plot twist in her film, while they presented it as a main running gag in the first 2 minutes of his film.
