Well done to you and the rest of the first responders! There is an element of excitement being a first responder in situations like this, but the relief from those that you help is far greater!
Very nice video & summary of the events Dieter. My heart stopped when I saw the Hilux that got trapped by a flash flood at the end...super emotional seeing the amount of mud covering the baby seats in the back - Just glad everyone escaped safely. Thank you for the video 🤘
@DieterPey I agree. Good coverage of the dramatic events. I was in Tankwa last week with adventure bike and was constantly aware of the effect that floods can have on the terrain in that region. As a 4x4 enthusiast too, I have lots respect for what you guys did.
Well documented recovery, exciting to do and also very exciting for the video content. Hope you all get your cars serviced and cleaned up as we all know what mud can do.
Great video which shows how good guys respond when help is needed. Notwithstanding a pretty serious situation you guys never gave up -- as you said -- the situation was a lot worse than any camera can show -- When mother nature lets off some steam ( sorry rain ) she can make a real mess. That mud was scary stuff ! ! ! Thanks for the video --
Dieter dit was goed om te sien hoe baie moeite julle gedoen het vir die Tankwa en sy mense. Julle is almal voorwaar staatmakers!! Ons was vroeg in Januarie tot by Padstal en dit was vir my 'n belewenis om die omvang van al daai massas water wat daar moes loop te kon visualiseer en nou te ervaar met die video materiaal van jou. Baie dankie, groetnis
Awesome video Dieter! What a crazy series of events. Big respect for you and your friends who went out to help, it's great to see and gives a warm feeling of community for the local off-roaders. Well done sir!
Well done to you chaps saddling up that journey to go and help others Dieter. If a person is not familiar with that stretch of road leading into the Tankwa under the dry / normal conditions throughout the year, then they would not be able to grasp how disastrous that scenery is with that much amount of water in such a short space of time. Both 'scary & wow' at the same time. Thanks for the video mnr.
Was there a few weeks ago (early March 23), took the same route Ceres to Calvinia. Same scenario, land slide outside Ceres, Was shocked it flooded in the Tankwa.
Toyota Landcruiser 79 and mud are enemies! Weight and most importantly, the leaf spring plate is too low to the ground and hooks up. Neil Woolridge Motors in Maritzburg manufacture an aftermarket plate that lowers the profile. We use them on our Cruiser fleet here in the Serengeti, big difference!
Great video, great team, few questions that comes to mind: 1) Why shy from showing the Maxtrax and Exhaust Air Jack fail? I think that would be interesting. 2) Do you think tying vehicles together using a tow strap helps in water/mud crossing? 3) Have not seen any attempts to break the suction by lifting the car a bit up? Some do it by having a barrel below the winch line.
Thanks! 1) We just didn't capture enough footage to show it, the MaxTrax did help us on many of the occasions, you just can't see them under the mud. The Air Jack was just being pushed into the mud, so that didn't help. 2) Tying the vehicles together will help adding a lot more torque, but it can only be done on low speed obstacles like mud, sand or water. The danger with tying them together in water, is when the stream is to powerful and it drags a vehicle down stream or over the edge of a bridge, there is a high chance it will take the other with it. So I would only advise using that method when the stream isn't flowing strong. 3) I did try a highlift jack, but it would just sink into the mud instead of lifting the vehicle. The raising of the winchline is a good strategy we did not use, or at least did not get to the point where we needed to use it yet.
This was the farm owners vehicle he used to get to work and town. With his vehicle being stuck he ran out of supplies for his family which we had to take to him.
Only in South Africa. No surprise the Toyota & Discovery survived but the Ford did surprise me. This is true 90’s Toyota Land Cruiser terrain, apparently you can buy a new LC for R2M in SA now. Sell your house to buy a car.
Often I say that the little boys playing in the mud with their tonka toys, are corporately developing a skill set that one day will be employed to rescue people and to save lives. Overlanding will become an essential skill and off-roading is a small part of that, yet not insignificant. Learn the trade. Pity the brand fanboys will always be my pet peeve. Just mature.
@@DieterPey Someone drove over my son's tonka truck, rendering it totalled. My own 23 case studies of the other indestructible brand proved that it isn't. Toys or real, perceptions are as unreal as the opinions they are based on. I am a realist.
Thanks for helping those in such dire need, you have shown the Tankwa many people have never or will never see ! It was scary to see the obstacles you encountered and recognize the terrain from old dry adventures in the area !
this was so hectic my word insane!!! it feels like this video needs a standing ovation at the end.
The amount of water that went through the Tanwka was crazy!
Well done to you and the rest of the first responders! There is an element of excitement being a first responder in situations like this, but the relief from those that you help is far greater!
Agreed, it was quite the experience!
Well done to you all. Absolutely amazing comradeship and community.
So proud to call you guys Friends !!!! Keep it up guys 💪🏾🙏🏽
Thanks man!
Impressive recovery, amazing story, great video coverage and narration, well done ! Thank you so much for sharing !
I passed there 100's of times in the past 10 years and never saw water. Amazing.
A lot of road rebuilding needed.
It was crazy to see the Tanwka is such a state!
Crazy time! But as you say it is the least we can do for those that do so much to make our Tankwa experience enjoyable.
Thanks for your assistance as well Tim!
Heartwarming to see you guys standing together and others who also joined to help those in need. Thank you and God bless you all.

Agreed, not a state you ever want to see your vehicle in or be in such a situation. Scary how quick it can happen.
Yeah, seeing that baby seat like that really made me think......so hectic!
Well done...... words absolutely fail me - just awesome what you managed to achieve 👍👏🏅🌟
Proud of you my boy 👍 & for you guys stepping in & helping out 😎 an heroes adventure you will never forget ❤
Seriously impressive recovery and you have a wonderful narration style that makes the viewability engrossing. World class....well done!

Dankie!
Well done guys! Great seeing these rigs in action helping out those in disaster!
Great content; and kudos on your motivation to help while adventuring yourselves...
Well done boys! Good job to be out helping
Now that's what I call an adventure
Well documented recovery, exciting to do and also very exciting for the video content. Hope you all get your cars serviced and cleaned up as we all know what mud can do.
Thanks! Yes cars have been serviced, cleaned and parts that broke have been replaced.
Hectic, well done for helping!
Great job to everyone involved. Excellent video 😎👍

Dit is self moeilik om dit te visualisering nadat ons weer terug is soentoe.
Such an exciting video.
Edit: Okay; maybe not exciting but just so full of so much chaos but also satisfying to watch you guys work together.
Awesome video Dieter!

Sho this video had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
You guys are awesome! Thank you, so much, for the massive mission and all the help those 2-3days!
We're glad we could assist
Towards the end of December, I drove the dirt road from Sutherland down through the Tankwa and the damage was incredible to see!
Did you drive Ouberg Pass?
You guys are amazing good real people job well done
I was stucked for 3 days whilst managing the project constructing the 5 mud chalets
Your such a good narrator ...
Thanks!
Hectic! We went to Tankwa after the floods, January 2023.
How did it look?
@@DieterPey you could see there was massive floods recently but it wasnt too bad

Seems like they are getting a lot more rain than pervious years suddenly
@Dieter Pey Yeah, massive rains across many regions. Stellar work on the recovery and helping out, got to see a lot more of the Tankwa
Thanks and yes, scary to see the amount of flooding we are getting across the country lately.
Incredible
wow! big ups dudes!
Hey your guys are heroes
Nice content and well done to all. Tell Roland its time for another clip.
😂 I'll tell him!
This is a real adventure, not bought, the nature is stronger than all 4x4. Though the 4x4 are able to overcome obstacles.
Chaos!!! 😂 thanks for sharing!!

Yes, as soon as a 79 goes down, you know its going to be tough to recover!

Indeed, not much can stop water!

Nice one guys!
Thanks!
Nice episode Dieter
Dankie!
Dankie vir die groot taak wat jul gedoen het en dankie dat ons dit kan sien.
Baie cool video. 🤟
Jy wat vassit maak altyd goeie content 😂👏
What was the urgency in recovering this vehicle if it’s not going to run anyway?
This was the farm owners vehicle he used to get to work and town. With his vehicle being stuck he ran out of supplies for his family which we had to take to him.
All the 4×4 fun you always wanted . Who and how did someone get hurt to be evacuated?
It was Hein from the Tanwka Padstal who got sick. Not entirely sure what, but he had to get to the hospital as soon as possible.
Would love to do a trip with you guys one day
We can make a plan to make it happen 😎

What is the other mode of transport to travel to the camp sites
Walking was their only other option

The river is the Doring River ….
Yes I got the name wrong. As you said, it's the Doring River, not the Olifants River.
damn wall!
how does one contact you ?
Dm me on Instagram
Did anyone get as far as Tandschoonmaak?
I'm not sure, but at that time we couldn't get much further than the Tankwa Tented Campsite as the river there was impassable.
if you had an Winch that would have been a game changer.
It would've made life so much easier!
Ceres district municipality should ask APT for bull dozer s.. They should remind their for rest of the winter.. 😁😁😁
Brilliant idea!
you seriously talked a lot more than the action that was really needed!!!
Yes I do talk a lot
So true
lets go Congo now !!!!
One day I'll travel up there!
Yankum ropes for recoveries
awesome video fcking hell what a jol, all i see is a toyota having to rescue everyone ROFL
