I was at this game. I bought cheap nosebleeds tickets last minute met my buddy. Before the game there was a representative from Dbacks who offered us to move down in front of the 1st base side because Heineken the sponsor didn’t want there section to look empty on TV. So we ended up getting box seats and a free hat and t shirt which I still own and got to watch a no hitter. I didn’t even realize it was a nor hitter until the 7th inning because there had been a bunch of baserunners.
Crazy story about this Gilbert guy. I once got into a Fortnite lobby with Dylan cozens (prospect for the Phillies) ended up playing with the dude every once in a while and one day he was like can i invite my boy Tyler. He was like “he’s a baseball player too and I’m telling you he’s gonna do something special one day” I’m immediately like hell yea and after that we didn’t play too much again. About 12-18 months later Tyler Gilbert threw a no hitter and I was like yooooooo.
Another canidate for most unlikely no-hitter is Babe Ruth/Ernie Shore combined no-hitter in 1917. Babe Ruth walked the first batter of the game then punched the ump in the face and got ejected. Then Ernie Shore who probably wasn't expecting to pitch that day came in and threw 9 perfect innings.
Man thank you for making this video. This was my buddies first game at chase field and from the first inning we were like “haha he’s throwing a no hitter” and it just kept going and going. Just brought up so many cool memories. First time I ever lost my voice was at this game from yelling so much. Put a smile on my face today.
4 pitchers in MLB history have thrown a no-hitter in their first MLB start... 3 of them had made relief appearances before their first time starting a game. Bumpus Jones of the Cincinnati Reds threw a no-hitter on October 15, 1892, in his first major league game. And if you look at his baseball-reference page, he should have just walked away.
@@Chuckwagon1515it’s not a stretch. i will say, i don’t know what his defensive metrics look like this year, but last year w the dbacks, he had far and away the best oaa and drs among outfielders, all while splitting time between outfield and catching. so that means he led the league while only playing about 60% of the teams games in the outfield. if that’s not elite idk what is
I was at this game too, drove from up from SD lol with my buddy to watch my padres get no hit. Ended up getting a Pham foul ball and Gilbert’s family was staying in the same hotel as me and we had some friendly banter…. Awesome experience.
The only bright star in a season that made me want to die in a burning tank. At least the D-Backs are making me happy again with a shot at a playoff spot.
I'd say the Phillip Humber perfect game was pretty unlikely as well. I remember Humber saying, "I didn't think I'd ever throw a complete game in the Majors, much less a perfect one," or words to that effect. I'd say this guy was more unlikely because it was his first start and he didn't really have no-hit stuff though. Shame he didn't become a great pitcher since.
Its pretty crazy that gilbert threw against musgrove who threw another no hitter like you said, but then also 6 of the others were thrown against 3 teams! So Cleveland, Seattle and Texas had 2 go against them each!! Thats pretty rough!! Also, probably pretty crazy, statistically!!
Great video Jolly! I was at this game with my dad for the 30th/30 stadium we visited and it ended up being a special one! Do you/does anyone know where to get that no hitter shirt? I’d love to throw it in as a Christmas gift this year!
I don’t know how much story there is to it, but I just learned about Richard Hidalgo’s random 40-home run season in 2000. Might make for an interesting video about guys who maybe would have normally won mvp, but got lost in the respective era
Alec Mills had been around for a few years when he threw his no-no BUT the sports world thought so little of him that he didn't even have a single baseball card yet. Not one. That's how much he meant to that point... and then he throws a no hitter. Just insane
I wonder if there will be a pitcher one day that throws a perfect game in their first start. It is already crazy already that this pitcher threw a no hitter in his first start but if a pitcher were to throw a perfect game in their first start it would be more crazy.
It may not be as good of a story, but Phillip Humber’s perfect game against Seattle was also insane. He had never pitched a complete game in the bigs prior to being perfect.
Hard not to feel this might have been the dagger in the Padres 2021 season. This game secured a series loss for the Padres against the worst MLB team that year and their momentum was just gone, as they went 13-30 the rest of the year.
If a manager pulled him during that day, they should be fired and black balled from the league. If the pitcher says his arm is sore, or gives up a hit then you can replace him. But you don’t touch a no hitter, especially when the team has absolutely nothing to lose or win.
I’m a padres fan and I remeber watching this shit in 21. Quite literally the shit sprinkles on an already diarrhea season. Was arguably an ugly no hitter with all the walks tho
It's a shame he's been awful since that season. 2021 being the year of the no-hitter was not impressive to me - as bad as MLB hitting has become it's a wonder we haven't had more no-hitters. Metrics (especially that bs "exit velocity" stat) have ruined what USED TO BE an ART FORM. Ted Williams is rolling over in his cryogenic tank watching Schwarber and Alonso both hit 40 homers while barely hitting .200 (and in Kyle's case .190) It seems like every talented hitter is going to the Dave Kingman "hit the ball harder and longer than everyone else" school. hitting the ball less than two time every ten at bats is NOT a science. It's baseball's way of "making the game more exciting". Atrocious hitting is NOT exciting.
When you first started showing up in the back alley games, I really disliked you, like a lot. I'm not sure why; maybe it seemed like you were trying too hard or something. Now, between the refguess stuff and the stellar stories on this channel, your content is among that which I look forward to most. Great job on this video and all of your work. It's been really cool to witness your progression, both creative and athletic. Sorry I didn't like you at first.
Your crazy bro. Most unlikely “no hitter” is Domingo Germans perfect game WHILE dealing with an alcohol addiction bro threw the first perfect game in over 10 years and then checked himself into rehab a week later😂😂
It's annoying hearing about how lucky he is because some balls were hit hard. Expected BA doesn't take into account fielders locations. I guarantee there's someone who actually got luckier. Someone who needed several spectacular plays made to conserve the no hitter. Not just some hard hit balls right at people. That's not being unlucky. Smh, all this expected crap is overrated. Balls hit right at people aren't unlucky outs. This is why 3 true outcomes won't stop spreading. We tell hitters to crush the ball, to not care about striking out and we say they got unlucky when they hit it right at somebody. Look at Arraez. He doesn't hit the ball "hard". You really think he's lucky and not just a great hitter. Baseball isn't some code. Analytics is getting ridiculous. I mean, the Yankees minor leagues story that just came out proves how crazy things have gone. I mean for fucks sake they banned hitting off a tee. Nerds who don't understand baseball telling athletes what to do. It's disgusting.
i agree somewhat, but its also the reason why pitchers like cristian javier or framber valdez are struggling, they give up hard hits and that will cost you. Also, the greatest hitter in history, Ted Williams, also believed that hitting the ball hard was the main goal when hitting, as did tony gwynn.
True but if they want to win and add players via trade then they kinda need to trade for prospects in exchange for said player with the bigger of the rank of the prospect in the team's organization moat likely getting better players I.E a Keibert Luiz and Jossiah Gray for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner. Sure it sucks that prospects get traded but some of the time it's probably for the best

Dylan cozens is a legend though
@@danielficarra2557it has truly bottled the mind.
We need to bring back old timey baseball nicknames, there's a serious lack of guys named "Bumpus" in 2023 MLB.
Time for Jombois to make a 3-parter on The Bumpus Crisis
i mean Tommy Pham is pretty old-timey.
We need some whiteys too!!😆😆
I want a Ragtime Willy.
Bob the dapper flapper.
Slick n ez Don.
And of course a few BAMBINOS!

The amount of absolute smashes hit right at people in this one was crazy great video Jolly I totally forgot about this no hitter

Seeing his dad crying in the crowd really hit me. That's such a great moment
The year of the no-hitter was a wild time.
@traybern You had seven no-hitters in 1990 vs nine no-hitters in 2021
One of your best videos yet, Jolly. Seeing great progression with your researching, editing, and narrative writing. Great work!

The fact Varsho caught a no hitter that early in his career and is now one of the best outfielders in all of baseball is unreal
nothing “unreal” about that lol
Best defensive outfielder. I wish he could hit a bit
One of the best outfielders in all of baseball is a massive stretch Lmao
@MystiqWisdomwell yeah, he does hit a little bit.
