The blu-ray looked better in alot of scenes to me.

Yes. I completely agree with those comments saying it's a mixed bag. The most part looks amazing and detailed, but in some parts the colors are over saturated and don't look natural. Hoping the best for the sound mix.
The Friedkin approved ‘color boost,’ is interesting. He wanted the scenes to “pop” off the screen, and he sure did succeed…
The upgraded colour makes this film look like The Wizard of Oz. I'll stick with the blu-ray.
I like this new look better. More defined shadows and the colors seems more natural as if someone lifted a filter from the transfer.
Oh wow they made the exorcism scene even bluer. In case you didnt know it was never blue, they introduced the tinting in 1998. Time for another release like in theaters.
Wow, it definitely has a lot more plus points regarding colour correction and contrast, yeah some scenes (not the whole movie) look a bit over coloured but in shots like the statue, the tennis court with the trees in the background or the father speaking to the mum on the bench the shrubs look extremely natural and they really have done a wonderful job on the darker scenes, sure they’ll be a few blown out shots with over saturation but I’ll definitely let that slide overall. I have the UK 4K steelbook and am trying to find time to check it out but as I work way to f**king much and i’m on lunch now, it does get annoying but a holiday in 2 weeks so lots to catch up on,

Hello friend from London UK take my word for it! Ever heard of the saying the grass is never greener on the other side. I have a 1080p 4K upscaling Blu-ray which I put my The Exorcist 2010 VC-1 Blu-ray in the my Sony ubp-x700 player which I put my 4K UHD disc into I have stopped framed each disc!!!!! At the same times and clearly the 1080p VC-1 disc wins lots of film grain where as the 4K UHD losses film grain badly
@@paul4films193 Well my 2 Panny 820’s, my Panny UB900 and my Sony X800 M2 says otherwise, I see some grain removal but the opening scenes and the church chapter definitely look tip top, the Sony X700 is has a terrible chipset and I know plenty on here that have had issues with them, hell i’ve had 2 players fail on me, I got to check the disc out today watched a good few mins of each chapter and on my C2 OLED it looks better than the Blu from a few years back, no there’s not a ton of difference but an improvement is an improvement, not much if any DNR, but each to there own, no hate here from me just stating that the Pannys have better 4K playback and definitely better upscaling..all good and no harm meant.

1997 Dvd has good minimal colour grading, but this release is amazing in 4k, skin tones and colours look great
I have both the blu ray and the newer 4K. I really wanted to prefer the 4K, but in so many scenes the saturation is way too much making the reds, in particular look false. The blu ray is the way to go for me. The scenes you have chosen here look very good in 4K though.
The contrast seems to be artificially boosted and somewhat unnatural. I like the clearer picture in the 4K scan but do not like the colour boost.
The color boost you are seeing, was intentionally done with the full authorization, and approval of Friedkin. He said that this more colorful version, is what he always wanted for the film.
@@celluloidtherapy5003yes and perhaps at 86 (I believe he would’ve been when he supervised this), his capacities were shall we say a bit diminished? He had changed his mind about many things over the years, sometimes doing a total 180 on major topics, like the film Vertigo. This is not how The Exorcist should look, unless you just really want it to look like The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg or Vertigo or The Wizard Of Oz or something. Some spectacle to enjoy on your HDR display. But that’s not what suits the tone of The Exorcist.
@@slacktoryrecords4193 True, true. It does have a bit of a ‘happy’ look, doesn’t it? I think it works in some scenes, but maybe not
so much in others. It doesn’t diminish my absolute love for this film, and the odds on getting a brand-new transfer, are very, very slim though not at all impossible. You always hope that the tent-pole pictures, get the ‘last word’ transfers, but then again, how would they ever sell us ANOTHER edition down the road? 😇
I hadn't heard good things about the 4K transfer, reiterated by others in these comments and, having now looked at the 4K grabs displayed here, I have to agree; simply too much saturation for a film whose original impact was greatly reinforced by its less vibrant documentary look and feel by master DP Owen Roizman.
This, exactly. The cold, documentary style look to it (though not nearly as cold as the extreme blue exorcism scene revisionism that arrived in 1998) was so important to the look of the film and its success as a ‘serious’ picture. This just feels like Old Billy wanted to take full advantage of the newest technology, namely HDR. Some of the scenes look too dark as well, and as a result you lose details. Great that the mono mix is included, of course (though of course not on the horrid extended cut). I don’t think I’ll ever be able to live with this 4K disc… the 1080p color-corrected fan restoration from a few years ago is very good from a color grade standpoint but obviously the resolution isn’t up to snuff (though neither is this, especially that disaster of a final exorcism sequence, yikes WTF). I also love the 1997 DVD, especially the full-screen, open-matte side which shows more picture at the top and bottom. But then…. It’s a DVD. And a very early one at that. With lots of print damage (which doesn’t bother me.) The colors look great, but the resolution is …DVD.
I'm gonna have to go with the original VHS version.
Disappointed by the 4K UHD I've watched it over and over just to make sure with my decision the 1080p VC-1 Blu-ray from 2010 is the better version no doubt like many other unhappy owners of the 4K UHD are saying the colours are over blown the I mean look at the scene in Northern Iraq the colour of the dust dirt and sand looks like the dust dirt and sand from Mars in 1990's Total Recall also pay attention to the burnt in subtitles in the film and then compare them to the 1080p's they also look over blown lol and let's not talk about the exorcism scene..... They have added more blue tint over the original remaster they did thus causing it to look washed out and lose details including the loss of film grain in most parts of this exorcism scene plus the bleeding effect of colours 😂 look at their lips and finger tips on the 4K UHD watch the 4K exorcism scene carefully on 4K then put your 1080p disc in and watch the difference! If you ask me, I don't think the 4K is really a new 4K restoration scan I personally believe it's the already the beautiful remastered scan from 1080p and gone over it adding DNR to some moments of the film also some of the scenes in the exorcism scene drop to DVD like quality also with bit rate drops. I'm about to get rid of my 4K UHD and now appreciate the beauty of the 2010's remaster which still looks stunning just upscale the 1080p disc to 4K this film does not need HDR 😂 4K UHD's are such hit or miss these day's that's why I keep my receipts when I buy them because 75% of the time you find encode issues with the discs. And lazy disc encoding like what's happened with The Exorcist here in 4K UHD is what will really kill physical media off
In some stills it looks like the added saturation and contrast does blur out some of the background details. But overall it just obviously looks better.

I have both of these and as per your post. It's an upgrade. However, it's not going to significantly chnage the experience. I would argue that the Atmos soundytack is the biggie. As for the new cover, it's a travesty and someone at Warners has to be embarrassed.
In any case, there are those who like this version and others who absolutely don't like it !!!

Finally having the original Oscar-winning mono soundtrack on home video again for the first time since the mid-80s Japanese Laserdisc is a bigger deal to me. (I will never, ever again listen to the film’s Y2K revisionist soundtrack.)

The obvious boost changes the mood of the film from subdued to bright.

I'm very disappointed with poor sharpness in the 4K. Some scenes has the same sharpness are as the blu ray and the colors are bit oversaturated. HDR is good one of the shots which I noticed when zoom in Pazuzu statue looks duller than the blu ray.
4:32 this looks like a downgrade, like it has little better quality but looks fuzzy. so strange.

The 4K is like The Exorcist Instagram. 🤮 It is so oversaturated that the colors blur together.
Sure the clarity is better but those colors?! I do not mind a bit of grain considering this is supposed to be the documentary look.

It's definitely not a great transfer. The HDR has been way overblown, especially with lighting. And the final exorcism looks like lower than 720p trash. On the plus side, the Atmos soundtrack is great. Still, visually it's a disappointment.
Ok 👌..so I own the special blu ray edition of the Exorcist with the booklet theatrical and directors cut also with the video special about the making of the exorcist. And firstly I'm not sure how your display is celebrated (or if it is it not) because NO ONE would have purchased the Exorcist if the title screen was that checkered as you have shown. Look.. I am a huge fan of 4k and currently own a sizable collection I have always been a video nerd 🤓 end still own a laser disc collection. If you want to be a videophile or add comparison videos like this one you need to firstly understand video standards and how to properly calibrate your display. And also invest in proper video equipment that is designed to show the correct detail and black levels ect. Sorry.. The blu ray version looks no where near as bad as you show it to be and yes 👍..4K will always have an advantage but higher end equipment like Oppo and Panasonic reoroduce a 1080p picture that looks 0:42 incrediablly close to 4K in many instances! So.. Honestly before you upload a video for click bait do your research because you may be surprised how many people actually know about audio video reproduction and can see through false representations.

On a higher end OLED TV, you can almost ALWAYS tell the difference between an upscaled 1080p blu-ray and a 4K.

The colors are too exaggerated in my opinion. The 2010 version to me looked good. Maybe clean it up and bring out more detain but don't mess with thr color man....when will they learn.
4K is a brilliant format. The problem is getting a good master that retains all the grain, with a respectful, accurate color grade, and then ensuring that the disc itself is encoded properly so that the grain and fine detail-which one hopes wasn’t scrubbed away in the mastering process-doesn’t get compressed to death and look like a 1080p Blu-ray or worse. There are plenty of brilliant 4K discs out there, The Exorcist sadly isn’t one of them.
4K Is superior to anything lower like 1080p, if you don’t know that it’s probably because you’re very uneducated about it or you have a bad TV. Also if you’re watching 4K content from streaming service that’s not real 4K, that is severely compressed and doesn’t even look nearly as good as the 1080 P Blu-ray. If you play a movie from a 4K Blu-ray to a good TV the difference is going to be a mind blowing!!! (Sorry I’m not insulting you but this is just factual stuff you can look into)
Thanks for doing this film. I was a bit anxious about it since the usual naysayers are saying this and that. I like that there’s a noticeable boost to the colours and contrast. I ordered the Collectors Edition from the UK so my copy won’t be here for at least two weeks. 👍🏼
Same here although I am in the UK. My local hmv had no copies of the standalone release. I love the film so thought why not?
