Yeah your right in the virgin island we use straight old dogs aha Mack rd and stuff like that they pull loads like nothing they never die with out a fight !
My Granddad drove nothing but Macks, started off in a solid tire, chain drive, dual drive '26 AC. I have a picture from 1930 when the guys took fleet pics in front of the company trucks and one of my Grandma hamming it up behind the wheel. He thought they were the only brand of real purpose built trucks and called his own son a sissy for driving a KW, haaa! Thankfully he didn't live long enough to see automatics in Volvos or people washing their feet in rest stop sinks become commonplace, he'd have some choice words for sure.
Some of the best trucks I drove were Macks. Loved every one them. I miss the lights and hand signal days. Back when drivers were not afraid to help people.
tough old trucks. im working on a 75 autocar now.350 cummins, 15 speed, walking beam suspension. hope to have it on the road in the next few months. Also have a couple Diamond Reo trucks.
Cool video brother. Nice to see you in the black beauty. Dig that dog! Last Bulldog I drove was an Ultraliner for KAT out of Indiana in 88. Truck it safe.
Oh yeah, I loved the Superliner I got to drive, only had it 2 years until the company shit the bed financially. Nicknamed her Wondermutt, always wondered what it couldn't pull, the only Mack I was happy to drive.
thank you for some more superliner action Mike, learn't so much from your vids which has made driving my 1942 Diamond T 980 so much more easier and enjoyable. specially opening the door to make better use of the mirrors that's helped hell of lot as roads are a lot more crowded here in the UK. can't wait for more Mack vids keep er lit!!!
Drove R-models for 14 years. Our 12 spds had a short stick for the deep reduction. I think they moved it up to the dash a few years after our newest R (86?). 350 & 12 spd was a good setup for flatbedding, I could almost keep up with the "big hammers" of the day. I especially enjoyed going up through the gears while backing up, proving what a big rigger I was...In '98 they put me in an air ride 454 CH, then I knew I was a big rigger!
Back in the day that was the truck to have,,,MACK it was literally your tough work truck,,,,they don't build them like that anymore,,,,,great video,,,,have a great day sir be safe out there
I'm from PA, and they use to make em in Allentown, PA, but ever since Volvo took over, it's sucked the toughness out of that brand. First company I drove for had a 2013 Mack that dumped all of its oil on the ground the first week I was in it. The second had DPF problems 2 weeks in a row. Finally they put me in a Kenworth with a cummins and that thing was much more reliable. Then the dicks took me out of that and put me in a natural gas volvo and that's when I quit to go elsewhere.
Came home and had to revisit your video, BostonTrucker, for the "full effect" on my computer...cell phone on-the-job just not the same! Love that sequence beginning @ 2:30 with the CB chat backed-up with the Mack idle...n-i-c-e!! My first run with Sharkey was from Quincy IL (their home office) to Sacramento CA in their one-and-only Ultraliner...nothin' but trouble!! Back in Quincy, the only "other" ride they could offer me was -- again -- a "one-and-only" unit, a Superliner turned-in by a lease driver who hauled "swingin' beef" to the West Coast in the "Monfort" lane! I took it "in a blink"... Thanks, Mike, for always making my day (and night!!)...
I don't care what anyone says. I absolutely LOVE that Superliner, and I will gladly watch you shifting it all day long. I personally drive an '06 Mack Granite with a Mack T310 trans. Absolutely love it!
One of the best Mack drivetrains ever made. An E6-350 Mack & 12 speed Mack transmission. Put some 44K Camelback rears & you have one heck of a tractor for Dump wagons, Log Wagons & Lowboys.. Amen Mike on the Autocar's. That was my family's other choice of truck . Cummins powered Autocar's . Have a great one. Mack
Mike been watching your channel for a while. I just watched the 717 w a little bit ago. It reminded of my hvac school days I worked as a lumper nights at a grocery warehouse, 1998-1999, SuperValu in Belle Vernon pa. Lots of guys in there every night with old school trucks guys from over in Bedford pa, carlisle pa, Harrisburg PA.
I'm largely a "Mack guy" by circumstance (although I must have imprinted early because a photo of me from back when I was 11 or 12 years old shows me assembling an AMR "R685ST" 2/25 scale kit) because I did my commercial licence road test (Class A here in Ontario, Canada) on a late 1970's R model with the Mack 12 speed (and all-Mack powertrain including camelback suspension and top loader axles), then went on to drive for J&F Trucking which was a flatbed carrier based in Ajax, Ontario that ran an all-Mack fleet. Mostly R600's with a few F models and Superliners, one MH Ultraliner and later some CH series tractors. I left over the road trucking back in 1997 and went to work for a welding company, they had an F800 (Ford) and International S2600 boom trucks. But even they later added a Mack to the fleet - 2002 CX613 aka Mack Vision tractor!
Interesting to hear your view on running a Superliner! I remember you mentioning your Ultraliner cabover in an older video. My dad never drove a Mack during his driving career, but my grandfather used a B61 for much of the 1960s. Survived a nasty broadside in that truck by DUI driver one day as he was headed home.
One of the first trucks I drove was a U-Model with a 711 and a quad box. It was geared so low you could put it in low from a dead stop without touching the clutch.
Hey brother , I see you all the time on the road ! Im always on Rte 2 . Im in the black Peterbilt flatbed tow truck . You are a great motivation to keep my truck clean because your always shining ! Keep on trucking brother
12 speed is my favorite Mack transmission, I grew up on a 5+2 in old gasoline Ford's it shifts just the same. I drove the old JF White tractor, it was an 88 RD with a 2 valve 350 and a 12 speed. That old Mack would out pull the CH with the 427 Mack engine and an 18 speed. The puppy leash will either stall her out or do nothing, flip the switch expecting to slow down and you speed up ...
Thanks for the shifting tutorial. Those Mack 12-speeds sure are a different animal. Buddy of mine had one behind an E9 in an '89 Superliner. Always thought it was interesting how they need to be split while making the shift, rather than pre-selecting like on a typical Eaton 13/15/18-speed. I think the reason a lot of drivers shift them with the jake brake on is to reduce the amount of time in between shifts...you can play a hand of cards or take a bite of your sandwich in between shifts, especially with the 5-speed Maxitorque transmissions...lol
You can put a trip switch on the clutch pedal to kick the jake out without having to switch it off and on. I put one on mine 3 days after I bought it back in ‘89.
You should mount another engine brake switch on side of the gear lever so you can turn your engine brake on and off quicker and easier without having to take your hand off the gear stick and grope around on the dash for it. That way you can use it to decelerate the engine quicker in an upshift too if you want. Just run two wires down your gear stick and join them to the two wires at the other switch in behind the dash, so you have two switches wired in parallel. I drove a Mack with a twelve speed like that for years and it worked great. Our head mechanic worried if it ever shorted out and sparked on the gearstick it might cause arcing inside the transmission, so I made sure it was really really well insulated and I was allowed to keep it like that. When I left the company it only took me a minute to unplug my wires and remove my switch and the rig was back to its original condition again.
Mechanical Cummins are the same way with the jake, I usually just set my foot on the clutch just enough to keep the microswitch open when I know I won’t be stopped long.
Ran with my dad in a lot of cool rigs growing up. Ltl9000 with a 400 cat, an A model kw with a 400 big cam, and a few others but the most memorable was an 89 r model with a 350 with a 12 speed. I wouldn't consider myself a mack guy either as long as its got that oldschool cool to it im in.
Hey BostonTrucker...on my break, checkin' out your video. Consider me a "Mack Guy"...walkin' 'round that LJ, you said it right..."Mack tough", to which I'll add, "is Mack love!". Other name for that "blue button" on the Suoerliner..."Tractor Protection Valve"...had one on my "one-stack" Sharkey Transportation Superliner! Thanks Mike...
I drove an ol DM 800 with a 400 BC3 and a 12 speed but mine had 2 shifters the small shifter was the deep reduction shifter but with 5:88’s under it I don’t think I used deep reduction. I went to dads truck driving school and learned to haul coal going around the strip job when I was 10 years old he said if you’re dead set on hauling coal no better to start learning than now in a 1988 RD800 with a 350 4/valve w/a 13Road Ranger. And I’d rather drive a RD 800 than any other truck I’ve ever driven and I think i’ve drove about every make of truck. That last statement got me 🤣🤣🤣
Mack r model, ultraliner, superliner, there was one more but dang can't remember looked kinda like Andrew's mack... I drove 5 speed, 6 speed, 8 speed and a 10 in a mack now drive a 389 18 speed nice truck like the older ones...
Ha, you sure SOUND like a Mack guy! I drive a Pete now, but I used to own an '83 Cruiseliner, and I miss its solid, simple dependability. And I totally agree with your statement that Mack guys would probably "settle" for driving an Autocar. I've driven a lot of different trucks, but never an Autocar, and I hope I get a chance before I'm worm food. Love your videos, keep 'em coming. See you in Macungie.
Well the freightliner firetruck we had also staplled with the engine brake on found out the hard way as no one explained it to me.that s why FDNY had mack firetrucks alot got reporpused into other units after there te on the front line.
My Buddy had an R Model Mack .. He bought new Heavy Duty Michigan Special Type Mack .. He got ran over by his own Truck Last Summer.. No fault of the truck .. I was woring on it with a brake issue on the side of the road.. when it started rolling down the Hill he ran in front of it to try and stop it it ran over him.. He was 60 years old have a wife and 6 kids age 4 to age 15..
R models rule. I had 5 R models back in the 70s and 80s I quit trucking because it was too hard to get some of the contractors I worked for in a timely manner. After spending 30 years being an Local 150 Operating Engineer I retired. I still drive a 1985 R Model Mack for a local farmer hauling grain, pumpkins. sweet corn. and equipment. I would rather drive that old R model than any of the new fly by wire new trucks
@@TheBostonTrucker oh for sure the Mack 350 was definitely a great motor one that was like said in the video understated and could definitely run with a Cummins or Cat. Personally I'm a model R guy my great uncle had one and he hauled smelting coke with it too bad he rolled it though
I started out in a 66 R model 237, quadraplex trans. 5X4 , rough riding, but could easily haul 90,000 pounds, back then the legal weight limit was 73,280 wasn't fast top speed was 62 mph
Noice video. I practice this by pushing a piece of stick in the ground, this is for the shifter. Then I practice how to shift. I also do this too, to practice how to operate an excavator.
My favorite transmission, dad used to call them crunchy tough fuckin transmission, it's funny most drivers now look at that splitter and there eyes go crossed.i think your a mack guy lol
I love them bulldogs. My grandparents lived just up the road from a MACK dealer. Learned to drive stick in MACK and was hooked ever since. It’s just a shame Volvo owns them now.
Yep the old school Mack guys and their sons and daughters are true Mack people. But they have to be before Volvo bought the Mack corporation. I grew up around the Mack trucks. My father drive one of those very old school Mack trucks for almost 30 yrs.
It’s the old Jake the née Mack’s won’t stall out. I’ve driven a lot of big back window Mack’s and they ain’t no KW. I will say though a good dog is worth it’s money.
Are used to run New England out of New York and you’re right about Mac being king in New England especially R models I started driving in 68 and I ran a B model with a triplex and an F model with a duplex and I like the F model better not only because it had a bunk but I preferred the duplex of the triplex I kind of thoughtThe triplex gears were too close in the auxiliary box And you are shifting your ass off
Hi Boston Trucker I'm from oz love your work and really enjoy watching your videos you make it look easy just noticed what you're driving at 0.18 in this video what is it and please do a twin stick video keep them coming bud
My GMC general ( Goliath) does the same thing if I don’t turn the Jake switch off. It will stall the truck out. And nowadays Volvo is Mack, or Mack is Volvo which ever way you wanna look at it.
Old Macks are grumpy old tough dogs, they pull like crazy and bark more. Your true passion makes me smile, thank you👍
Yeah your right in the virgin island we use straight old dogs aha Mack rd and stuff like that they pull loads like nothing they never die with out a fight !
Then the thermodyne would haul all day and sip fuel.
I love the saddle tanks on the old Mack. With my old rigs, they have really humbled me with the new trucks.
I'm with you on that.

That's awesome! I use to use the long roll from my mom's wrapping paper as a stick shift and big mixing bowl as my steering wheel.
Jisses ! It s Like an old tractor
Best combo ever e6-350 with a 12spd best ever! Yes im a mack guy!😜

5 reverse gears come in handy at times
Good video mike
Thank you 😊
I love them bulldogs. My grandparents lived just up the road from a MACK dealer. Learned to drive stick in MACK and was hooked ever since. It’s just a shame Volvo owns them now.
It's a damn shame! Wonder if we'll see Macks in Europe soon.
@@TheBostonTrucker It’s rare, but I have seen a few videos of superliner’s in Europe and they have some pretty wild paint schemes.
Only first gear you use that low hole it’s like a compound stick but on the dash
Yep the old school Mack guys and their sons and daughters are true Mack people. But they have to be before Volvo bought the Mack corporation. I grew up around the Mack trucks. My father drive one of those very old school Mack trucks for almost 30 yrs.
You're absolutely correct!
R models were great trucks in the woods..get to use thise deep reduction gears
I've only used deep reduction a few times, more of a pavement princess.
Well at least you can go through the gears in Reverse in a Mack ..
It’s the old Jake the née Mack’s won’t stall out. I’ve driven a lot of big back window Mack’s and they ain’t no KW. I will say though a good dog is worth it’s money.
Are used to run New England out of New York and you’re right about Mac being king in New England especially R models I started driving in 68 and I ran a B model with a triplex and an F model with a duplex and I like the F model better not only because it had a bunk but I preferred the duplex of the triplex I kind of thoughtThe triplex gears were too close in the auxiliary box And you are shifting your ass off
I shift the splits with engine brake it makes them quick that why I do it
Hi Boston Trucker I'm from oz love your work and really enjoy watching your videos you make it look easy just noticed what you're driving at 0.18 in this video what is it and please do a twin stick video keep them coming bud
It's a Mack Superliner. I'll do a twin stick video someday when I pull out 1963 Autocar out of storage.
Ok I meant what your actually driving at 0.18 it's part of your intro in this video it shows you briefly driving a twin stick.
I’d take a super liner or a r model over any truck on the road I love my r model
My GMC general ( Goliath) does the same thing if I don’t turn the Jake switch off. It will stall the truck out.
And nowadays Volvo is Mack, or Mack is Volvo which ever way you wanna look at it.
