I think a lot of the problem is Port keep massively overachieving during the regular season. I really don't think they are a top 4 so they get exposed during the finals.
Port have finished in top4 in 5 seasons. I hardly think thats overachieving. Their problem is finals, as they fall every time. Most teams do this. Brisbane have been in a similar boat for many seasons now. Its not easy to win a premiership. You need a lot of things going for you at the right time of the season. Geelong being in 13 prelims in 18 seasons is hardly something to write home about either.
Absolutely, another loss should result in fast-tracking the coaches exit whilst a win keeps the dogs at bay for at least another week. Anything less than a grand final appearance should be viewed as an abject failure.
The problem is the port magpies won the afl licence but port power entered the afl. Pathetic to lose ANY home final and continually waste opportunities. Jack cahill & Foss would be horrified.
Too many coaches/clubs try to fast track premierships by bringing in spuds like ratugolea to fill a hole, port has a bunch of them. These sort of players dont stand up to high pressure finals football. Chris Scott and Geelong did the same thing until finally achieving success in 2022. The home and away season is for developing players and a game style to stand up to finals pressure.
Port are regular season kings. Don’t have the cattle for September. Port runs the model of trading its picks for ready made players around the league. This model very rarely wins flags let alone multiple. Their last first round pick was Josh Sinn in 2021 who has played a total of 8 games since debuting in 2022. Lachie Jones year before that. Since that they have traded their first round pick away for JHF and a bunch of change. Including this year’s first as well. On the cusp of Tasmania taking all the talent. You’d think more of the same for the foreseeable future.
Port are front runners & when it goes bad ,they just can't dig there way out of it . Only have 1 game plan & no game 2 , so is easy for opposition to work them out .
Something about every clubs culture sticks permanently to particular season outcomes. You go back to 2001-2003 and Port Adelaide only being in the competition a few years earlier finished 3rd and back to back minor premierships. Yet didn't make a Grand Final and lost 6 out of the 8 finals. The footy show on channel 9 Grand Final special did a Grease parody and had the Port players as cartoons sing instead of chorus "Grease lightning go Grease lightning" " Lose finals oh keep losing finals" quite funny actually 😅
5 wins and 8 losses is actually a win rate of 38.5%. I’m not sure how you get 41.67%? In any case, a win rate of 41.67% is actually statistically the expected win rate for teams in the finals. This is because of the nature of a finals series where most teams will lose more than they win. So Port are about average on finals performance. Not overly bad. I dgaf about Port but just pointing out the facts here. See the math for top 8 teams for typical scenario: 1 - www = 3 = 100% win rate 2 - wwl = 2 = 2/3 win rate 3 - lwl = -2 =1/3 win rate 4 - lwl = -2 = 1/3 win rate 5 - wl = 0 = 1/2 win rate 6 - wl = 0 = 1/2 win rate 7 - l =-1 = 0 win rate 8 - l =-1 = 0 win rate

yeah outside of their midfield 3 and i suppose Aliir and a few others but their forward line isn’t great IMO
Its because of the fixture. It happens every year.

I think Hawthorn will also use the Round 10 loss from this year as extra motivation to try and win against the Power

Really well written piece .
If Port lose this week, you can expect Hinkley to be sacked next week.

Geelong lost the last 3 times they've played finals at AO - two of them in QFs to Port 😅
