Man these are awesome. Had a few 90's skidoos incl a 97 mxz 440, 99 Mach z 800 and 97 Mach 3.. had newer backcountries too but amazes me when I get on one, the power they have. Even newer ones arnt as snappy over 20 years of tech later. My favorite Era of skidoos
I come from a northern place where lakes are safe from september to April. And so Ski-Doo used to send prototypes to that place. Spray painted a uniform color without names or stickers. And the tests pilots had a day team and a night team. They were not allowed to shutdown the machine ever for the whole winter. They would ride in trails or race the machines. After a while we'd know somethings up with the green one for exemple as it was digging trenches while most of us plebs would ride along on Skandic, Bravo, Tundra's and Formula Plus.
Nice survivor. Yes the Rotax engine was the first with Exhaust valves. The RAVE debuted in 1989 on the Mach 1 580. The Mach Z would have been the first triple
Back in November 1992 I was lucky enough to have bought one of 18 built for the northeast,, it was delivered on December 18th 1992,,I remember right from the start the cylinder would drop when full throttle was applied all the time,, skidoo knew of this problem,,I was told to run one heat range hotter plug br8,it helped a lot,I remember Lanny Benoit put a 580/380 clutch spring in the tra, got rid of the junk comet, what a hole shot that spring did I can honestly say I was never beat in a race, I had a race track on it with stud mounts welded to the track clips that was the secret for out of the hole acceleration no track spin at all,,God so long ago, still have great memories of that sled
@1000machz Lanny had a lot of knowledge on how to make them fast,, he and the race shop and Larry from the crank shop made them run,,he had a small sleeve he would put into the end of the exhaust on the 583,617,and 670s which made more back pressure ever notice from old films Lanny was gone from the start he would take the high side and drop down at the start of a race and never lost the first place position, he also would use nickosil cylinders while others didn't have at the time
I am guessing most Mach owners had better luck than my Dad in 93. After LOVING his 92, it was a foregone conclusion he would upgrade to the new Mach Z. He switched brands that year because he was left stranded at least 3 or 4 times in his first 6 or 7 trips. Snowmobile guys are unrelenting taunters and Dad had enough. Sometimes you just get a lemon. The sombitch just wouldn't run. Dealer couldn't figure it out. My favourite sled that I have ever driven was his 1992, 617 Mach 1. Loved that matchine. The look, the seat, the mid range.
Wow that thing is gorgeous! And the Rotax engines are very underrated by people who don't know about them. Rockets!! The RAVE exhaust makes riding one like having 2 engines I one . Grunty, and smooth when they are closed, but brother, once you hit that flipper and open them RAVE valves fully, Hang On! I had a 1992 MACH ONE 617cc with RAVE. LOVED that sled!
Decent!! I remember those handle bars when I was a kid on a stx 583. The sled was so hard to turn. Lol then when we got a formula z 670 with straight bars it's was like a weight was lifted off our shoulders....literally. sweet ride dude.
@@RyanBenbowMore expensive in 2024 I guess, I have 4. Back in 2017-18 I paid between $500-1800 for my '96, 97, 99 & 2000 MACH-Z's all running great and we ride them every winter. Prices jumped in 2020 during Covid and never came back down on these. I used to buy new sleds every other year, all 4 of these were less than 1 new sled and these are waaaay more cool to cruise around on. I upgraded the rear skid to the SC-3 on them. Keep up the maintenance, leave them stock, use quality oil and fresh premium gas and they are reliable.
I’ve seen 20 year old DSL triples give new sleds fits at the grass drags. Between that sled and the really old 6000/5000 500cc Cat leaf spring twins have caused more newer sled guys to throw tool boxes at amature drags than any other models. I love a good Q ship.
I personally think the F-Chassis was sexy. 1 of the best looking, better perfoming snowmobiles out there. Although Im more a rotary valve rotax motor fan. The case reed engs were very strong.
My uncle has one lake race ready with 1200+ lake race miles. My customized 01' SX-R700(Clutch kits on both/jetting/stock exhaustw/benderCan/Studded ripsaw/Reed spacers &VF3. I still cannot beat his rig on a lake😂. A kid stopped@ the shop one day with his new 800 doo claimed his sled is faster than both of us. We just shrugged it off while we worked on my barnfind Jag440LT. He kept stopping by challenging him, all he said you don't know your wet behind your ears still. One day he stopped by and called our sleds trashy slow triples suck "I got 1G you can't beat me" My uncle told him next week on this long lake end to end. We tore down both sleds and changed parts that needed changing ie engine seals, bearings, and new fuel lines. My uncle tuned both our sleds making a few practice runs. He showed up, took our marks, his sled had the holeshot, my uncle caught up first me right behind and we just started walking away. Kid didn't have anything else to say about our trashy slow triples😂
It's a 780 not 744, and 1989 Mach 1 583 was 1st with RAVE too, the tank shroud was also fiberglass in 93 and that one has an aftermarket hydraulic brakes as they were mechanical 93/94
Actually, all 780 engines (93-96) were 774cc. That engine under the hood was the original engine that was later updated and the updated engine came with a purple cylinder head
i remember when these first came out. Was at a local snowmobile derby and it never made it home. Was sitting on the side of the hiway to be picked up. Earlier in the day it had a coolant leak and we put stop leak into the reservoir. Was a short term fix i guess. Did not realize they were that rare. That is the thing about collectibles. if they were problematic they are even more desirable now. An example would be the formula plus with efi. They would barely run but i bet they are worth something now.
In regards to the more modern sleds goes, the esthetics of the early 90's sleds is top notch, I had a 94 Ski-Doo Summit 583 and I still think it's the best looking sled Ski-Doo ever made.
Simply gorgeous sled...I love all the muscle sleds but I'd give this one a slight edge in the sexy dept looks wise...I kind of rather the sound of the triples even more than the quad cyl Yamaha especially the Thundercat IMO.
Very cool. It's too bad that this sled didn't get its own media cycle like the vmax 4 did. But Cat completely dominated the news that year with the tcat. This z may have only had 600 units that year but this (and the mx with the same chassis), was a style that would go on to be used for a long time. This was essentially all new. It signaled the end of prs, ushered in a decade of triples, and was radically different from the Mach 1.
I got to ride a 93 ,friends uncle was a dealer and brought 4 sleds up, this was one. I later bought a 98 mach z and miss it. Didn't that sled stretch your arms out
After a tough 1980s..Bombardier climbed its way back to being a serious theat for the top spot ....1993 would be the beginning..(F-chassis)..they haven't looked back since...
Yes it had a comet clutch that skidoo called the F3, it was junk,, i was lucky enough to have been able to buy one of only 18 that were built for the northeast,,i was with friends at the grand prix de Valcourt snowmobile races in February of 1993 I had the machz, and I remember we were on the trails and I heard a bang, we stopped and I could see where something hit the belt guard sure enough a clutch arm broke off,, as luck would have it there is a skidoo dealer right across from the skidoo factory, we all went there and they brought the sled in immediately and they sent a mechanic over to the factory and he came back with a new comet clutch was back on the trails in 30 minutes,, those clutches could not tolerate the harmonics of the engine
Yes and no. You had the blizzard 645 and 797 all the way back in 1971, race sled, air cooled. A whole different beast. This was the first tripple consumer model.
Nice sled Seen a guy flip the earlier style one with the round front end...149km was the top end for his and he destroyed it at that speed..lol The purple screamer was an awesome machine in the long track.
Ahh the 97 Mach Z 800 triple was the fastest and had the highest hp hence that's why ski doo quit making the 780 went to the 800 triple u put a stock 93 780 Mach Z against a stock 97 Mach Z 800 triple that 800 will walk all over that 780 I know I've seen it happen plenty of times theres I know I seen them at the grass drags and ice drags the 97 800 triple Mach Z wins every time
Actually, the presenter made a mistake. 1993 Mach Z 780 was a 774cc engine. Also, rotary valve intake would be very hard to do, if not impossible, design wise, on a 3 cylinder snowmobile engine, like found the one found in the Mach Z.
Your classic sled videos are great. There's still classic sleds being enjoyed here in the Maine snowbelt

This makes me miss my ski doo triples had one of these and a 1st year formula 3. Or purple screamer as we all called em. Love triples.

This isn't the first example of the rave valves on Skidoo. I believe 1989 Mach 1 583 had them as well.

That is the holy grail of the Mach Z’s. Just a beautiful sled! I really enjoy you showing us your collection. Keep them coming!
Museum peice.
Looks mint. I had a 1995 Mach1 loved that sled twin pipes 44mm carbs rocket. Best brakes in the business too.
I had a 1996 Mach Z 780, still to this day right up there as one of my favorite snowmobiles! Love watching these videos, nice job sir!

I was reading that they were all like that...they sent out a recall that pretty much replaced the motors..pipes. and carbs
Yup as the other guy said there was a motor/pipe recall and they were great after that
My favourite Ski Doo of all! Thanks for posting.

You can't afford it. Neither can i

Saw your '92 Yamaha V Max-4cyl. video..and now this SkiDoo,,,such clean pretty sleds. Thanks
My formula 500 deluxe has that same instrument cluster design, I especially love the temperature gauge for light snow conditions
Best looking sleds ever.
600 made, 590 piled into trees after a few at the bar!
The 1989 Mach 1 was the first Ski-doo with rave valves.

Had one great sled, wish I still had it
The gauge package Dash on that sled is identical to a 2001 MXZ 800x that I rip for many years in red beautiful gauge package, mirror image
Dang that thing is sharp. I've got I 95 Formula SS 670 that's almost as clean but my goodness that is awesome.
I had a 95 Formula SS 670 as well. Sure was a beast, I miss it when we actually get snow. I’d suggest you don’t sell yours like I did.
Man that sled takes off quick
not for a faint heart have one
sweet survivor! seems that someone changed brake to hydraulic. It should have mechanical. That triple 780 is one of the finest motors there is.
Thank you so much for sharing!
i have a 1995 not for a faint heart it in mint condition love it 100 mph in seconds

Fibreglass hood, also did that year come with a comet clutch?
Yes. Originally came with a comet 102c. Should have a cable brake too

Ur comparing a 140 hp in the 93 780 Mach Z to 97 800 Mach Z with 152 to 155 hp
Not a bone stock sled 1 hydo brake 2 wrong skis stock were wider 3 wrong gas cap.Wish you would have showen the clutch stock was a comet.
744cc 🤦♂️ first Rave Valves 🤦♂️... In 1989 the Mach 1 have Rave valves... And the engine 774cc 🤷
Nice sled but you really should have a brain bucket on when you are ripping on those sleds
It’s funny it’s 744cc and they called it 780. Think big.
Actually, the presenter made a mistake. 1993 Mach Z 780 was a 774cc engine. Also, rotary valve intake would be very hard to do, if not impossible, design wise, on a 3 cylinder snowmobile engine, like found the one found in the Mach Z.
2 670s joined together would have really been fun!!!
Lotta stuff wrong with this one. Wrong tank shroud, no cable brake, no curved air box scoops, wrong clutch guard. Yes it’s nice but not 100% correct.
Junk engines that year nothing but problems
After three lemons in a row from ski Doo, I moved away from the brand.
You put a hydraulic brake on it,,didn't come with hydraulic
