Iconic intro. Beautifully understated. Typically pilot episodes are slow for me and I don’t usually become invested until 2nd or 3rd episode. This was not the case for me with this show. I was totally bought in immediately.
I thought the costume designer could have done better with Blackthorne. He was a European mariner of the 1600s, an age when England was just barely out of the Dark Ages. In Episode 1, he was shown as a rough, bearded, long-haired and bedraggled seaman. Sea life was basic, dirty and terrible in those centuries, more so in privateer ships. I thought the series should have him slowly become refined as he learned the finer culture of the Japanese, but no, one episode, he was a dirty ruffian, and the next, bathed and gotten a haircut, he looks like a modern-day well-fed white man with very unlike seaman behaviour. That was actually a key narrative in the James Clavell's novel: Blackthorne/Anjin-san had to learn and adapt in the more subtle (and not necessarily less dangerous) ways of the Japanese. And, to me, the ultimate way in which he embraced the Japanese way was when he willingly commits to do seppuku-now, that's one character arc for you.
@@Wasthere73 on the contrary. It shows the character's evolution. They actually called themselves bushi, meaning warrior. Hiroyuki Sanada performed his own stunts. Hatamoto translates to 'near the banner' or 'under the banner' due to their literal positioning to their lord in battle, closest by their side and the last line of defense. But this closeness also applied off the battlefield and signified a strong trust in all matters. It essentially means advisor to a potentate, or even a high-ranking samurai, in areas such diplomacy, trade, foreign policy, and battlefield tactics. William Adams, the historical basis for Blackthorne, began as an advisor to Tokugawa on diplomacy and trade. But eventually he earned the title of Hatamoto, giving him a lot of influence when it came to foreign policy. As Portugal was not as populous or militaristic as Spain, it generally did not conquer indigenous populations or even create colonies with the goal of settling them - the Portuguese instead operated many feitorias (fortified trading posts) in coasts around the world in Brazil, the west coast of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, western India, southern China, and finally in the artificial port of Dejima in Nagasaki. The Japanese received the Portuguese with much suspicion, especially as the Portuguese were interested not only in trading with the Japanese, but converting the Japanese to Christianity. The spread of Christianity to Japan would cause much social turmoil and political discontent, as the Shogun and many daimyo considered the new religion to be a threat to their authority and Japanese traditions, and did their utmost to exterminate it. Eventually, the Portuguese were expelled, but Japan had since been opened to limited European trade, and the Portuguese were soon replaced with the Dutch, who made no attempt to proselytize and restricted their interactions with the Japanese to trade. Cathay is an older name for China. The wives of the samurai were trained to protect the home and village when the samurai warriors were away at battle. The Samurai carried two swords: Katana (long sword) and Wakizashi (mid sword). The Katana was used by foot soldiers, and provided a longer reach to initiate and prevent attacks, while the Wakizashi (pronounced wa-kee-za-she) is a shorter sword that is primarily used in close combat situations, especially indoors. Moreover, Wakizashi was used as a backup in case the katana became unusable, and to commit seppuku if necessary. A third worn weapon, the Tanto (dagger) was employed for combat and seppuku as well. The generic names for the Katana and Wakizashi are called Daito (long sword) and Shoto (short sword), and worn together they are called Daisho (long and short). Traditionally, the home of the Emperor is considered the capital. From 794 through 1868, the Emperor lived in Heian-kyo, modern-day Kyoto. I've finished watching this couple months ago and once in a while I'll come back to this epic intro, I used to live in Japan when I was a kid and witnessing a cinematic series like this was amazing. I think japan is growing to be recognized in Hollywood
Shogun in 1980 was wonderful. This version however is league on its own. Absolutelly wonderful. The attention to detail is incredible. Love every second of it
Dude. I never (and I mean NEVER) can get myself invested in shows. The last show I was ever really invested in was Sherlock. Never watched Game of Thrones. Never got into The Office. None of that stuff. But when I say this show is one of the greatest shows of all time, I seriously mean it. The historical accuracy, the characters, the settings, the graphics, the sound & music, the storyline, the politics, the drama, it’s all so fascinating. This is a show for anybody who loves political dramas, history, Japanese culture, war, VFX, good music and sound design, anything! This one is for you.
My oh my how I love this intro. A Zen garden - peace. Sharp notes in the calm music exerting a peaceful time. Major notes for hope. The garden is revealed to be the sea, and a ship is seen on the horizon - music takes a minor turn. A foreign ship - perhaps Portuguese, Dutch or British. Things are getting tense as the ship is tearing through the shogunate's crest. The Japanese fleet have no choice but to retaliate, departing from the shore. Music is now outright ominous - almost flat notes only. The Osaka castle - the cradle where decisions are made, where everyone's interests are at stake, where everything happens. But whatever happens next, it's not good - the music warns us so. Sure enough, the organised pattern in the garden is being wiped - the peace is disturbed. The castle is collapsing under attack. Fire arrows in the crimson sky - this is war. Who will take power next? The cradle is now gone and its ruins reveal the helmet, the symbol of power - it is the dawn of the new shogun. Literal chills!
One thing that made this show other than its attention to detail so exciting to watch is the unravelling of multiple plots which were based from real events. I guess what people are very interested in are old narratives being debunked and how even japanese people themselves never thought had really happened being shown on screen with the world as they watch each episode, are giving them a new perspective and insights, connecting the dots that led to who, what and where they are now, and why the world is what they are right now. Truly universal in every possible angle of understanding by anyone watching this epic show.
Love that the taiko drums are used in this theme. I loved the original Shogun, as it was true to the book, but new version is just as good~ especially the last episode which was emotional to say the least.
@@jmenax78 The book's main characters are based on real historical people, so the showrunners said the next seasons will take those real stories as the basis.

After 1868, the seat of the Government of Japan and the location of the Emperor's home was moved to Edo, which it renamed Tokyo.
This is my 4th and have also watched episodes 1 and 2 3 times … soon to be 4th!
whoever thought of this sequence had a great idea because the sand's suppose to symbolize the ocean and the rocks/trees obviously represents land so on so forth
Such a beautiful intro & an incredibly good show.
I really want and need an extended version of this theme.
Same! Especially the somber, almost worry inducing vibe that lasts from 0:01 until 0:37
I love how seamlessly the show transitions to the title sequence, it's so smoothly done with the background music in the episode
After final scene of the show, I had to listen to that masterpiece of theme music again. And again. And again. And again...
I've finished watching this couple months ago and once in a while I'll come back to this epic intro, I used to live in Japan when I was a kid and witnessing a cinematic series like this was amazing. I think japan is growing to be recognized in Hollywood
18 Enmys baby 🗿
Not like the old show
@@kascnef ok, and?
@@kascnefthis is better than the old show.
Love this show, can't wait to read the book that just arrived!!!
As a hardcore Nioh fan, this show was a blessing...
Finished the show few hours ago and I can’t get this music out of my head
Shogun has carved it's way as the masterpiece in our hearts already ❤😮.
I've heard stories of people that skip the intro...
No Shōgun for them!
Every time I come back to listen to this intro theme I get literal goosebumps, without fail. Hope this show wins many awards!
This sequence just won an Emmy!
*something shocking happens or a surprise reveal*

Brilliant intro.
Amazing, can't wait to see the next episode 🙂
Come on FX we need a steelbook of this masterpiece.
Shogun in 1980 was wonderful. This version however is league on its own. Absolutelly wonderful. The attention to detail is incredible. Love every second of it
Beautiful, calming, and just an amazing intro! 😤😎👏✨
So beautiful!
Incredible show
This series has potential to become a series of the year!!! and if that happens it becomes the next GOT!!
Greatest title sequence in ages
This show is the best show ever
The music when it shows the Shogun title is just something different and amazing 😍
when you're stuffed in a sushi buffet but you already ordered 100+ of salmon and white tuna sashimi and they are coming in your way, fast
Such an awesome intro song, the way it builds is incredible. Not surprised to find Atticus Ross involved.
Literal chills!
great interpretation. was looking for someone to explain this properly in context
I find it cool that Cosmo Jarvis, the main character, Blackthorne, his mother, is in the credits of this show as the production designer. Really cool!
This is perfect Japanese theme which starts from slow music to intimidating.
Makes House of the Dragon look like a teen drama.
The best opening title sequence since Westworld... hands down. That build up towards the end gives me chills.
I really need an extended version of the first part ending at 0:35. It’s so beautiful and peaceful sounding.
It's great to see some new story like that, with strong characters and good photography
Cinematography*
I dont shape the wind, i only study it.
This might be one of the most spine chilling, gorgeous, crazy amazing intro I have ever seen. ngl I had tears 💀
I will forever remember this intro. The music is simply stunning, menacing and beautifully done!
I adore how atmospheric yet threatening the intro is. Melancholic but also enraged. Crazy good!!!
This opening is a majestic masterpiece! The music, the graphic design, the CGI, everything sounds perfect and EPIC!
This intro you do NOT skip!
Love that the taiko drums are used in this theme.
I loved the original Shogun, as it was true to the book, but new version is just as good~ especially the last episode which was emotional to say the least.
Masterpiece. Only 1 bad thing: is a one and done series. Only 1 season. Maybe it's better that way.
They're already working on seasons 2 and 3.
@@julioareck I know. And they already covered the whole book. I hope they don't GoTnize it.
@@jmenax78 The book's main characters are based on real historical people, so the showrunners said the next seasons will take those real stories as the basis.
This show is just too good
Nah this show has Game of Thrones potential. Love that they speak Japanese which ironically might be what "holds" it back to some people. I even think when they are speaking "English" as Portuguese it should've been Portuguese as well but I get why they didnt. Go watch this.
As someone who didn’t watch parasite due to its subtitle heaviness, I am completely hooked on this show.
I have to make sure I set time aside for the show so I can pay attention to the subtitles, so I can’t work while I watch it, but honestly it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to take. This show deserves all my attention
Wish this would be at least two seasons I mean there’s certainly enough story in the book
I'm so glad ı watched this show.
Can’t get it out of my head. Love this show 🙂
I'm caught up now. The show is great.
Didn't know Atticus Ross was behind the music until I looked it up today. Epic soundtrack!
Atticus back on top😮
This show is a wonderful work of art. Congrats to everyone involved. Also this intro is one of the best I've ever seen.
Shōgun intro totally reminds me of American Gods intro, it’s fantastic
