  • FX's new series "Shogun" (2024) isn't just a story of a lone westerner in a forbidden land. It's a tale of clashing cultures and hidden agendas, where the arrival of a shipwrecked Englishman throws a wrench into the delicate political balance of 17th-century Japan.
    "Shogun" promises to be a thrilling exploration of a pivotal moment in Japanese history. It's a story where the clash of steel and the clash of ideals will determine the fate of a nation. Will Japan succumb to the influence of European powers, or will it find a way to preserve its traditions in the face of a growing external threat?
    Go watch to whole episode on Hulu.

      Shogun was perfect in its storytelling, written, acted and filmed to show something precise that didn't need any continuity.

    It took me an ENTIRE goddamn season to realise that John Blackthorne aka Anjin-sama is NOT the protagonist. He's the MAIN CHARACTER. Toranaga-sama is the PROTAGONIST and always has been since the very first episode.

Blackthorne's actually a much better man in the books too, Clavell makes a point of distinguishing Blackthorne's protestant ethics to bushido, and all the samurai in the book are always puzzled by how kind Blackthorne is too peasants and dying people. It doesn't say. And there's no indication that Blackthorne figured it out either. But who knows? In the book, the reason Toranaga gave in his inner dialogue for keeping Blackthorne in Japan was so he could have a friend. I don't recall the exact words he used, and I don't have the book anymore to check, but he said something along the lines of 'I can allow myself to have one friend,' and he decided that John would be that guy.

      Well yeah, this is exactly where the book ended. There’s an epilogue that’s like, 300 words long-ish, talks about Toranaga winning the battle, but that’s about it. The implication is ofc that he becomes Shogun and unites Japan, which he admits was his deepest desire all along. (As his irl analogue, Tokugawa Ieyasu, did)

      Sorry but not showing us the battle that was built up for several episodes was such a cheap and bad twist, the show had massive build up that got completely wasted. The book mentions the battle so why not show it.

    • @culleno872
      @culleno872 Місяць тому +20

      I’d argue the show accomplished what it set out to do and that was clearly to subvert audience expectations. I feel like everyone went into this expecting, wanting some final epic battle that just never comes… on the same note, we start the story believing blackthorne to be the key to toranaga winning, but instead it’s mariko, blackthorne spends the later half of the show wandering around aimlessly (don’t get me wrong it’s beyond enjoyable😂) but that’s definitely not what the audience had in mind. Beautiful storytelling in my eyes

    • @DutchPlanDerLinde
      @DutchPlanDerLinde Місяць тому +2

      @@culleno872 to me it felt unresolved and disappointing. I don’t see anything clever about not showing a big battle, its just a cheap way out. Subverting expecations shouldn’t come at the price of letting the story play out. It would in no way undermine Mariko’s sacrifice. This way we only are told that eventually Toranaga wins but we dont see it. Might as well say that in episode 5, he’s gonna win so why bother showing anything. I liked the series and I will rewatch it in a few years but it could’ve been cemented as a generational epic.
