I wish the pacing was a bit faster. It's slow at times (like all TV shows). But I admit it's pretty good.

i worked with her in shogun on set all the time, she was soooo nice and kind! We filmed Shogun in vancouver canada, beautiful place!
I thought it was film in Japan for authenticity.. But Canada looks like Japan countryside though.. Well done for the showB! amazing! watched already 5 episodes!

@@merblabrador9909 I think it is alot more expensive to film in Japan too, not to mention the bureaucracy to even get a permit to film in Japan is pretty burdensome.
@@thitran1362 on top of that modern Japan is much more densely populated, probably hard to pick a nice angle without all the modern villages, roads, bullet trains...

she's definitely beautiful. but she basically acted like a wet blanket the whole time. great show. but she pretty much did blank stares of non-emotion and monotone lines every time she was on screen. I'm guessing that was on purpose though

I am a great fan of the Japanese girl group, FAKY, and Anna Sawai is a member of that girl group. She sings and dances really well. I hope she continues making music with her group.
Shogun is so good, maybe the highest production values I've ever seen in a show, just incredible visuals, sound, production design, every scene is a feast for the eyes. And she's great in it too.
Marco Polo was right there with it. They couldn't afford to keep producing it. Hopefully, Shogun doesn't suffer the same fate.

@@christopherbrown1082 Unfortunately I think it’s just supposed to be a one-off. The events of the book it’s based on unfold over the course of the episodes, to my knowledge. I do wish that we could see more of it, but I suppose we can just appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is, no matter the length of the show. Personally I think that having a ton of seasons is the failing point of most shows these days, yeah?
Shogun is good but Game of Thrones by far craps all over it for production quality and acting. Again, Shogun is great but not the best.

Shogun is fantastic. Easily my favorite new show of the year. And Anna is perfect in it. Honestly the whole cast is impeccable. Not a single weak performance.

Living in Japan and speaking Japanese, Anna is right; the Japanese used in Shogun is old! Its like Shakespearean English to English people. The show itself is amazing. It really shows old Japanese culture. The tatami mat rooms still exist here. Lots of people have one tatami-mat room in their house.
May I ask if its hard for you to understand the old Japanese in Shogun? I'm learning Japanse since 2 months and I like understand 2-3 words out of 100 when they speak japanese.

It's basically using the honorific form of Japanese which highlights no making assumptions about another's intent and it ultimately defines what your station in the social heiarchy is and keeping those in their place. Servants will speak a different form of Japanese to their lords than the lords will speak to their servants and what not. Whomever is below you, you speak one way... whomever is above you, you speak another and whomever is equal yet another. Yeah?
@@ash072 correct. Even today the level of language is based on age. I speak to kids differently than to people older than me.

The show is amazing and she's arguably the best thing about it. Her expressions and pauses are really well-timed, which allows her to perfectly deliver the essence of her traumatized character.
So many comments about her looks. Yes, she is very attractive but seems so intelligent, personable and with a bit of elegance thrown in. I wish he asked her more about her acting background. Hope to see her in more shows or movies.

That is because there are a lot of creeps online. Hollywood is so accustomed to hiring attractive people, I am numb to it. Yet everytime a new actor comes a long they act like its the most beautiful thing they ever seen. If they step 2 feet out their home they will notice beautiful women everywhere.
It's impressive how you could analyze her so deeply from just a short conversation where they don't even talk about much. A lot of people are complementing her appearance and not much else because there isn't even enough time to gauge her personality. Also, she's there to promote the show, not to give a formal interview about her background. It's a promotional appearance more than an interview. If you want to learn more about her past work, just Google it.

I saw that a critic called the series a “masterpiece” and I thought, oh c’mon. Then I started watching. It’s so good on so many levels. Plus, I’ve been educated on Japanese culture of the time, marveling at the period detail
I was sad when Anna left FAKY but it was the right choice seeing how far she's come. So happy for her! ❤❤

I’m SO grateful for this show, which features Japanese actors so prominently!!! Too often, Hollywood blends all “Asians” together (e.g. Memoirs of a Geisha). I love our culture and am happy to finally see a Japanese actress making headlines!! ❤❤❤
It is a somewhat odd thing. But it's not too surprising sadly since American audiences really cannot differentiate between the various Asian ethnicities. The average American can't tell the difference between Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, or any others I can't think of. Add to that the fact that almost no one in America (statistically) speaks Japanese and it's hardly a surprise that Hollywood plays so fast and loose with casting.
To be fair, it's not just in America. I've seen shows in Japan, especially WWII period pieces where there's an American general or G.I. speaking English to make it authentic for the Japanese audience but the actors they use are often European or English. As long as they're white and can speak the lines, they don't care.

Yeah I thought Shogun was gonna go with the Memoirs of a Geisha route but the cast is super solid lol!! Finding out Hiroyuki Sanada was producer really helped build this show.

Dune 2 is overrated. Although the scenes are breathtaking, the action is kinda' boring. There is something missing in Denis Villeneuve's movies.
The key is both based on old books, great stories and single writers, rather than having table rooms of writers pumping out current modern nonsense

...and before it was a mini-series in the 80's, it was a best selling novel. James Clavell also wrote King Rat and Tai-Pan among others. Great Author!!
King Rat was made into a movie in the mid 60s, with George Segal and a bevy of your usual very good Brit actors, whose names escape me now. I thought it was a good flick at the time. Don’t know how well it holds up.

It's great that they are trying to keep the dialogue accurate to the period. Modern Japanese has so many loan words.
