  • Shell dwelling cichlids are a fish I've wanted for a long time. Multigasciatus shell dwellers were the first I had ever seen or heard about so it's exciting to finally be able to work with some in the Fish Cave.

They bred. If you watch closely at 5:52 you'll see the fry swim next to the shell

I, like you have been wanting these guys for a few years - I even got a 40 breeder from PetSmart and had it set up rtg when a seller backed out on me last year...my search continues. Congrats on your new colony - the parenting behavior of cichlids is the biggest draw for me. Some have great colors too; just look at those beautiful bright blue eyes

Breeding tip for you, not sure couldn't tell from the video but if you don't have crushed coral in there throw some in, I have hard water and use crushed coral and I ended up paying 20 each for a group of 9. I have around 50 or so now growing out with all original 9. Good luck they're great to watch!

Nice video. Thanks for posting. One of the most compelling tanks I’ve ever seen was a long shallow tank with nothing but white sand, shells, and a colony of multis. I could have watched it for hours.

I love my Shell dwellers. I got some gold in December, they imminently started breeding. Just picked up some multis about a week ago, excited for them to get established as well. Highly recommend them, they are super interesting to watch.

4:36 bellow the bottom center shell, there's a fry. They're breeding. You need more shells though. I kept these guys years ago and it's harder to keep them from breeding than it is to breed them. Very prolific fish.

Holy smokes! You’re right!! I need to keep a closer eye and add more shells like you said. I’ve been adding BBS every day just to stimulate them and feed any fry just in case.

Good luck with the multis. I’m going to switch out my gold ocellatus (only one left-he murdered all his tank mates, bit the tails off the alligators, fin nipped the piranha, and chased the hippos into the neighbor’s yard)) for multis. I’d like to do a 40b with them but no room at the moment. They are famous for their construction. Once they start breeding they never stop. Are you over 50 tanks at this point? The Fishcave is growing fast!

Looks like some other folks also noticed a few babies throughout the video and I came here with a related question. Do you find that you gradually see more babies, one at a time, over time? My other cichlids all produce one big batch at once. So, either very few are surviving in each of my hatches, or... maybe they emerge from their eggs at different times like a lot of killifish? *Also, thank you for another awesome video! :D

😁 they are an awesome fish. I hope you enjoy them. I started with 4 and now my 40 gallon breeder is popping with fry. I'd say you have at least 1 male. It's extremely hard to sex them though. Males a little larger. If you got 8 that definitely increases your odds.

I have 10 in a 40 breeder. I bought them about a month ago. I have less adults than you. They have dug all the sand out to where most shells are sitting on the bare bottom.
