    There is another way to do this journey.
    South Western Railway to Staines
    South Western Railway to Reading
    GWR to Slough

    Also going to Paddington with the Bakerloo Line is faster than the Northern Line and Elizabeth Line.

      Isn't there a shuttle that does precisely and only that?

      @@quintuscrinis8032 Indeed.
      What happens, for those who don't know the area, is that, Sundays excepted, Colchester Town (St Botolph's to locals (it was called St Botolph's until 1991) has a single platform, but an hourly arrival and departure from London Liverpool Street, and an hourly (in each direction) call on the Colchester-Walton-on-the-Naze service.
      The station is situated at the bottom end of a triangular junction between Colchester and Hythe - i.e. it's a terminus station, and all trains must reverse. Coupled with it having only one platform, this creates a capacity problem. For the London service to fit in its path along the main line (it calls at every GA-served mainline station except Hatfield Peverel and Ingatestone), it needs to have a decent layover - but there also needs to be room for the Colchester-Walton service to reverse. Solution: to run the London unit to Colchester and back to free up the space. It's not entirely pointless though, as Colchester station (North station, to use its local name) is a long walk from the city centre, and uphill. The train is therefore more convenient.
      This, incidentally, is also why Sudbury services won't be extended until a new platform is built.

    The 450s are fine for ‘suburban’ routes but SWR have been sadistic enough to use them on the route from Weymouth to Waterloo.

      When was that? I've seen them on the Basingstoke to Bournemouth and Winchester to Poole "shuttles" but not the full length services before.

      I haven’t seen them on London-Weymouth but they regularly do London-Portsmouth

    • @anism5784
      @anism5784 11 місяців тому

      I think there's been a misunderstanding here, because getting a 450 all the way to Weymouth from Waterloo is near impossible. The Weymouth service will always split at Bournemouth, with the rear unit either terminating or continuing on a slower pattern to Poole. If a 444/450 hybrid ends up doing this, the 450 is always the rear unit. In fact the only time I recall ever working and seeing a double 450 on that route is when the entire train terminated at Bournemouth due to engineering works between BMH and Wareham. Regardless, this isn't too much of an issue, considering they do the Winchester - Bournemouth route and do long distance services anyways. The pleasure of being short of rolling stock right....

    Personally I would have gone Windsor to Staines. Staines to Reading. Reading to Slough. Slough to Windsor. Avoids the cross London transfer so would be cheaper and would take about the same amount of time. Maybe slightly faster. Nice vid though :)

    • @quintuscrinis8032
      @quintuscrinis8032 11 місяців тому

      Avoiding London isn't always cheaper for some reason. I have looked up the Bournemouth to Manchester journey amd for some reason the via London (3 changes) route is usually about 30% the price of the direct (one XC) train. :(

    • @robertmills6497
      @robertmills6497 11 місяців тому +1

      @quintuscrinis8032 I used to work for SWR as a Revenue Inspector and as I said personally I would go via Reading as I hated travelling across London. The Reading route is more scenic. Can't comment on the price as I used to get free rail travel ;). I will.add that we were always told that for journeys with multiple permitted routes the "not london" option was usually cheaper. However in the case of your XC route London would be the cheaper option as the direct route via Reading and Birmingham is far faster and more convenient as there are no changes.

    Windsor and Eton Riverside and Windsor and Eton Central stations are quite near to each other and both serve the town of Windsor and village of Eton via crossing over the River Thames.
    And South Western Railway should introduce the Class 701 Arterios that are to be used on the suburban services in Southwest London and to operate on the Windsor & Eton Riverside line and Reading line.

    I think the idea of going from Penzance to Thurso, most southern to northern stations in the UK. This would happen by leaving at a set time near the beginning of the day and travel up to Thurso but as soon as you get to a station you have to leave within 5 minutes, it may take multiple days but it would be interesting how many places the rail network could take you if you have such a tight time to depart from a station. I feel as if this would be a very good UA-cam video and wouldn't be able to think about any other UA-camr who could create this video concept really well.

    Haven't read all the comments but you could have gone Richmond-Turnham Green - Ealing Broadway to avoid Central London. I had to commute from Chiswick to Slough for 18 months, usually Chiswick Park - Ealing Broadway but occasionally Gunnersbury - Willesden - Paddington.

    Fab. When are you doing St Albans Abbey to City? Excuse for 150s on the Bletchley to Bedford line very soon or a trip on the Overground. Plus the new Brent Cross West station, depending on your route. If you then add the Alban Way cycle path you have three old stations to look at.

    I love the Pointless Journey series. Waterloo is indeed a great station. Love the kissing statue. Long platforms though. I would like to suggest birmingham snow hill/Moor Street to Birmingham New Street.

    Nick how did you find it staying in Slough?? Was the hotel any good?
    Going from the Staines line to the GWR line I prefer to change at Richmond for District line connecting up to Ealing Broadway (from there it’s Eliz to Slough obvs).

    It's the pointlessly large trains on the Thames Valley branches that gets me. There should be a small fleet of 153s for Greenford, Windsor, etc. Those bigger units should be sent west to where there are larger numbers of passengers on regional routes.

    You go westward and Geoff goes the other way from west to east. That's going to be fun.
