- You're going to find the Ford Escape Plugin as its own unique trim level for the 2023 model. It features some great standard technology like Ford's new 13.2" Sync 4 screen, heated 1st row seats and heated steering wheel. It features a 2.5L hybrid engine with an electric range of 60 kms or 37 miles!
You'll find the Plug In with an available Premium Package that adds in a 360 camera, Park Assist, 10 speaker sound system, Head up Display and so much more. I'd recommend that package for people who enjoy more technology in their rides.

*Fuel economy correction*
Thanks to @centauri0 for pointing out the hybrid Escape fuel economy numbers are correct for Canada but US are:
HEV (Traditional hybrid)
42 / 36 / 39
PHEV (Plugin)
42 / 37 / 40
Highway / City / Combined
We are finally getting 40.9 mpg in our new 2023 escape hybrid around town (fairly open driving). A lot of 45 mph driving. Not much stop and go. I’m still very happy with it. Basic front wheel drive hybrid model.
We bought ours in December 2023, the dealer had multiple Escape PHEVs to choose from. We were even able to negotiate a nice discount. We are very happy with the deal and the vehicle. Very comfortable, very economical.
Always love to hear when people are able to negotiate on the price! Glad you're enjoying the new ride. What car did you have before you picked up the new Escape?
@@CarsWithSteve our last vehicle was a 2019 Fusion Titanium Hybrid. It was a good vehicle, no problems at all.
We love our PHEV! Similar specs as this one but no sunroof. One note, the foot activates lift gate was removed as an option due to chip shortage. Going from a Nissan ROGUE to this, I feel like the Escape is roomier even though it is smaller spec wise. Tough choice between this and the RAV4 prime. But availability, price, and superior tech made the Ford win out
I've heard a few people mentioning the chips for foot liftgate.. there are a few other features from different vehicles that are removed because of the shortage too. Appreciate you sharing the reasons you chose this over other options, glad you're enjoying yours!
I'm putting in my reservation for the 2024 next month. Thanks for the review. I hope that next years model has the full body color available in the PHEV version cause its looks nice.
Nice! It's crazy that the builds are being pushed to 2024 models already but hopefully you aren't waiting too long before you get it
Thank you 🤍
You're welcome!
i love how you show what features are available on what trim! i hate it when manufacturers always advertise starting from pricing and always give the reviewers top of the line trims. Btw, did you mention you are located in Canada by any chance? it looks like Canadian specs
Thanks Phil, good to hear people like the detail I go into! Yeah I'm just outside of Toronto. You in Canada too?
@CarsWithSteve yes Sir, around Vancouver area here. Keep up the good work! I also appreciate the clear audio, almost a potcast quality to it. I assume you script before hand? your content is full of useful information, which is different from most UA-camrs that tend to blabber on a bit
Small world! I still haven't been out to that side of Canada yet but it's looking like next summer it'll happen.
Always good to hear when people like the quality of the content, I've always been a fan of content without the fluff so that's always what I've shot. Surprisingly not scripting before hand. I figure out what features each trim level has, turn on the camera and just start talking
Great video! My new loaded 23 will be here Monday off a dealer lot. $6500 off sticker and market for my crv hybrid. Pretty excited to drive and tow behind Rv! The hybrid Maverick (awesome ride) will go on the market!
Thanks Bruce, awesome you were able to get that much off the sticker price! What made you want to swap the Maverick for the Escape?
@@CarsWithSteve I guess I’m trying to grow up and simplify my life. 😆 too many vehicles around here!
Ah makes sense
UPDATE!! Since last comment I’m please to announce my EV side of hybrid have been updated by dealership what a difference as to range.
I would suggest anyone having range go to your dealer.
I’m very happy with this hybrid.
Thanks for circling back! Did the dealer end up telling you what was affecting your range?
Looks a lot roomier than they used to be. Has some nice features for sure, Sync 4 looks really good, be nice to see it used in more products as time goes on.
Bit more space from the last 3rd gen (2013 - 2019) but I think they did a good job on the redesign from last year. I'm excited for that Sync4 screen to find its way across the whole lineup too!
@Cars With Steve I think the current update was done quite well too. It's sales have been fairly well eclipsed by the Bronco Sport, but not sure if that will stabilize as they are on the market longer.
It's definitely a style thing. If Ford were to introduce a hybrid Bronco Sport they would probably be able to take the Escape out of the lineup
@@CarsWithSteve I totally agree, but having said that, the Escape kind of fills the city small car space.
good point!
Hey Steve, is there an option to enable an Off-the-Grid mode for camping? To keep the AC/heat system on for more than 30/60 minutes?
Only option would be to disable 30 min max idle Settings --> Vehicle Settings
Good luck finding one! I placed my order in October '22 and still no word from Ford.
Wow that's wild. Has your dealer told you if yours has a VIN yet? 8+ months and no update is pretty odd
@CarsWithSteveI have a VIN ordered OCT 22. BUILT APRIL 23. STILL ON FACTORY LOT. Ford is dropping the ball on production and shipping. And my handsfree lift gate got deleted
@@CarsWithSteve I've received nothing but emails from Ford saying that due to "supply chain challenges" I will still be waiting. I suspect that because I chose the base PHEV rather than the one with the tech package, I'm at the bottom of the priority list--if I am even on such a list.
I ordered in mid December and just got my vin 2 weeks ago, scheduled build start next week
Edit: just to add I ordered the PHEV with the premium tech package.
I was doing a bit of digging and it looks like there was recently a recall on the PHEV Escape so that's most likely why a hold up is happening. Dealers won't be able to deliver units until there's a fix.
@Charlie - yours is probably still sitting on the factory lot so that QA can ensure it isn't affected
@usapines - I'd follow up with the dealer again to see if you have a VIN assigned. The added tech package would be a reason for hold up because of the extra chips that are needed. It's pretty odd you haven't had any sort of update in 8 months
That extra inch of sunroof opening on extra button press made me lol. But why?? I bet someone is having a laugh at Ford design department.
HAHA - the extra inch makes all the difference
Best review .. I am going to buy tomorrow
Now I am sure 100% that the ford escape is the car that I want
Thanks Ali! What color do you think you're going for?
If you bought this car, can you check it? Is there a water leak in the rear trunk?
Is it possible to set the temperature on schedule inside the garage? Worded another way: Does the preset temperature use only electric or would setting it inside be a carbon monoxide risk?
If you have the plugin stored in the garage your best bet is to plug yourself in and then set up pre-conditioning through the Sync4 screen that's covered in this video
Your MPG chart was wrong. The PHEV version is 42/37/40
Thanks for pointing that out! Just posted a comment with a shoutout. Cheers!
I’m debating between the Escape Phev platinum and Hyundai Tucson Phev ultimate awd; similar trim and features, Escape is $58,000 Vs $54,000 Tucson;( is awd also ); waiting time of about 6 months to order for Escape and maybe more for Tucson; what’s your advice and opinion , what to choose ?
Thanks
Tough choice there. I've always been a bigger fan of AWD over FWD, especially if you live somewhere where you get snow in the winter. The Escape PHEV has about 20% better fuel economy, more EV range, HUD and park assist while the Tucson PHEV has AWD and the blind view monitor.
Timing does play a part too. How long has your Hyundai dealer told you the wait time is? And can you wait that long or is the current vehicle on its last legs?
@@CarsWithSteve Thank you for your reply! For the Tucson phev there’s no certain time to wait for, is just based on allocation and no dealership knows exactly what they get or when they get a phev ; some we’re saying 3-6 months, some 2 years….also you have to take whatever colours they get…
From order point of view with Ford is more easy and straightforward….at least it’s a regular order with your preference.
At this point I have a vehicle so I’m not in a rush, I’m just trying to see what’s the best option.
Of course! If you have the chance.. drive them back to back so you can get a feel for them. I'll add an Escape vs Tucson video to the list to shoot
What is the solution if the charging door don’t open or close in winter, thanks if you have a solution.
WD40 or lock de-icer works well if it's stuck and also as a preventative for the lock/latch. Spraying a silicone spray around the seal should prevent it from not opening by repelling water from seeping in
Can I charging with a faster?? Where can I charging?
The Escape has a level 1 charger included, you can get an aftermarket level 2 charge cable if you want and then you just need to install a 240v outlet somewhere convenient. Other option would be to look at a Ford home charging station
They need awd phev
Yes they do! It's doable... the Corsair PHEV is built on the same platform and comes AWD so it's just a matter of Ford opening that up to the Escape as well
What is the wait time to purchase an Escape PHEV? Not as long as the Toyota PHEV I hope.
Had a few people mention in other videos and forums they've seen theirs in 2 - 4 months. Going to depend on what the rest of the build is that you go for but I'd say 3 - 6 months is a realistic timeline
How to fold the side mirrors ???
Manual folding in the Escape only...
Warning!!! I bought the 2023 escape and I love it. But at the dealer we were transferring our junk from our old car to the rear of the Escape. My wife is 5’ 1’ tall so I showed her the rear lift gate was adjustable. Lowered the gate about six inches and left it there. I grabbed something from the old car and approached the escape from the side. I cut a hole in my scalp with a good flow of blood. The corner of the lift gate is pointed and quite sharp. Do not approach from the side unless you fit under the lift gate.
Oy, sorry to hear that. Hopefully you're doing better now!
I need all-wheel drive, I don't understand why it's not an option. Toyota's RAV4 Hybrid has it.
Right? Weird choice for the hybrid to not have it
It’s funny how last Friday I was gonna get the one I ordered and trade in the car I currently have and they tried to give it to me at a higher price because my brothers name was on the order and not mine and to add to that they were valuing my trade in 6k lower than it was.
Wow that's pretty wild! Hopefully you found another dealer to work with instead
@@CarsWithSteve we bought 2 trucks from there before but for my father and had no problem or mark up but Apperently was diff for me. Been looking into Tesla for the next car.
Still haven't had a chance to review Tesla, which one are you thinking?
@@CarsWithSteve model 3 just the base with nothing added.
Entry level is the best sometimes. I have to get in behind the wheel of a Tesla for a review!
1 month ago, I bought an unused Ford Escape from the dealer, the spare tire area was filled with water and the rear seat bars were rusty, I called Ford Canada, they said it was not a matter of concern to us and got out of the situation, let's see what will happen to me, I'm waiting now. Those who buy a Ford escape phev or with a sunroof should check the location of the spare tire. If anyone has this problem, can they write here?
Oh wow.. talk about a bit of an oversight from the delivering dealership. Don't know if anyone from Ford Canada/USA watches my channel but hopefully they see this and do something about it. Add this to the list of things for people to check out before they accept delivery of their rides.. regardless of which one they get
@@CarsWithSteve I talked to the dealer, he said that either a piece of part was not installed during production or the pad required to prevent water leakage was not installed. My car is only 30 days old and 3 thousand kilometers old, the rear seat bars are rusted, do you think I have a chance to change the car? I don't know about this. If there is a situation like changing the car in Canada, I want to use the exchange option. Can not stop asking myself that why would the part have been changed in my new car. Do you have any idea if I can ask them to refund a certain fee.
My vehicle only charges to 32 kms sitting in driveway, I haven’t driven car, yet!!!
ford rates it 59kms per charge or close too is a misleading.
I do understand driving condition, heavy foot, using A/C or heat.
But like I mentioned only charge half of what it’s rated and I haven’t moved car.
If it's not charging up to full there could be something up with a module or wiring.. You should bring it in for a service appt to have the issue diagnosed
You are absolutely right, they told me 70 km, but it is 30 km and if I use hybrid all the time, it becomes 40 km.
No AWD, dooooohhhhh......
I know right?! Such a weird choice for Ford not to have the plugin available AWD as well. The Lincoln equivalent has it so it's definitely available on the platform
@@CarsWithSteve It should have been so simple. Put the electrical motor on the rear, gas up front. Bam, 4 wheel drive.
And something else is up too. It has a 14.4 kWh battery, and yet the ev range is 37 miles. That's rather short.
Bang on with the option for AWD! The PHEV range is pretty standard across the board for most manufacturers with similar battery sizes but I'd love to see 100 mile plugins.. I think it would probably be a way better seller than EV and ICE
@@CarsWithSteve if an Ioniq EV 1st gen gets 125 miles from a 28.8 kWh battery, you'd figure that the escape PHEV would get a little more than 37 miles from a 14.4 kWh one.
EV and PHEV have different underlying tech.. the 2024 Toyota Rav4 Prim has an 18.1 kWh battery and only gets 42 electric miles...
In 2023 37 miles is still low. Talk to me when plug-in hybrid runs 100miles on a charge.
The range is pretty standard for plugin vehicles. There aren't many that are higher than 40 miles per charge for full EV mode but I was reading an article earlier where Toyota has apparently developed a longer range PHEV tech and are hoping to use it by 2025 so it is possible. I think higher range hybrids are going to become more common over the next 5 - 10 years
RAV4 will do 50 if You're easy on the throttle and maximize regen...............Paul
The problem with RAV4 prime is when can you get it? The dealership wait list is 2-3 years in my area( Mississauga)….
Yesterday I learned all I need to Know about the Escape.........That it is only a FWD Vehicle.....Not a true Suv and holds NO future interest for Me..............Paul
The plugin is FWD only but the traditional hybrid and regular gas engines are FWD or AWD. Really odd decision for Ford to not have an AWD plugin because their Lincoln equivalent comes with it standard
I just purchase 2023 ford escape hybrid, ford claims 37 miles (60km) fully charged as to electric only range.
I can tell you it’s not true, I have only achieved half that range of charge and car is sitting in driveway, then when I drive this ford hybrid on electric only the range is even worst.
I’m sorry I bought the ford escape hybrid, would love to return for full refund.
Crap I should have bought this poor performing car on Amazon.
At least amazon have good return policy, ford you suck!!!
The max range for all hybrids and EVs from every manufacturer is based on ideal driving conditions. Do you have a heavy foot? Are you in a colder climate? Around hilly terrain? Do you have the heat or AC blowing? Are you pre-conditioning the cabin?
hello kurt, Can you check the rear trunk of your car? There was a water leak in my car and the irons inside the back seat are rusted. I bought the vehicle 30 days ago, Ford says it is not an issue for me, and their customer service is disgraceful, they constantly interrupt us and tell us to speak very slowly because I can't take notes, a complete fiasco.
This guy is really obnoxious telling me what he likes and what he thinks is cool much too often. Who cares what he thinks?
Haha what a weird comment
What a bazarre comment! The man is reviewing the vehicle and is pointing out things that he likes and things that he thinks are cool. What's wrong with that? It's not like this is the only review on the internet........... check out some other reviews. Piece all of the reviews together and use your grey matter to form an opinion for yourself. Try making peace with your words, it doesn't cost you anything.
I need all the information I can get before I purchase my next daily driver----he is very thorough!
