Thank You. I forget we are the only ones in the whole world that measure different.
Wolf Pack Woodcraft : It's called culture.
Everyone has their's and ought to respect other's. I know that, but still I fail 😳!
The youtuber lives in the US, we all know what he means when he uses pounds and ounces. If you need metric figures just google the conversion... its not that hard.
I use a steel canteen and the old fashion cup (like the Pathfinder). It was the system issued to my father from world war 2. It is still totally functional today as when it was issued 81 years ago.
There is a reason we always hear people say "they don't make them like they use to." When you have a good system you better hold onto it forever.
Do a couple curls and a few squats a day for a month or so and you'll be able to put up with the extra pound. Save that money for more lapdances.
I have both once I got the heavy cover ti canteen I love it saved up the money glad I did the weight difference and heat transfer with titanium is well worth it
It is nice how fast the ti cools down when you are done cooking. specially when it's late and getting dark soon. The ti is better I just don't know if it's $100 better.
Honestly this review really helped me out. I'll be going for the titanium. Never wanna cheap out on your gear. Nothing wrong with the stainless steel, but with all of the added benefits you get with the titanium it's worth the extra 100.
I'm really glad you found my video helpful. I really enjoy the Titanium canteen kit. I still can't believe how light weight it is.
This video was very well made, informative, and thank you so much for not adding background music through the whole thing! You got another subscriber.
Music in the background drives me crazy on other people's videos. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks no music is better.
I go with stainless every time. It's robust and pretty much bomb proof. But the biggest factor is, as a Brit I like my cup of tea to stay hot. Titanium heats faster but looses that heat just as fast! which for me counters the benefits. As for weight, long hikes I can see the benefit's, so you just drink your tea faster. The cost is really the elephant in the room!! What are the benefit's of having an extra $100 buying power when looking to outfit your self for the wild? That knife? That axe? Military surplus verses civilian sleep system?? Economics is a big factor in convincing the "Long haired General" that you need that New shinny thing!! just my thoughts. Stay safe and leave nothing but foot prints.
$100 can go a long way with filling up the rest of the kit. I don't think a Titanium canteen should be anyone's top priority. However, if you love your system and aren't willing to leave anything at home, the Titanium can really shave weight from your pack and still allow you to carry everything you want or need.
Actually the cup comes with a lid. If you keep the lid on the cup,. Your tea will stay surprisingly hot. I've been using this kit for over a year and truly love it .. -15c coffee cup in snow bank and as long as the lid is on. It stays hot for a long time...
I've been using titanium for a decade and while your right it loses heat quicker, it really isn't hard to put the cup back on the heat for a minute to warm it back up, titanium is stronger than stainless (even in thinner sheet) so it really is bombproof, when your stainless canteen will have a huge dent in it the titanium bounces back with naught but a scratch.
I have the pathfinder canteen and it does everything I need it to do . but if I was going to do the Appalachian trails I would spend the green backs for the titanium canteen . but for 2 to 3 days in the wood around here not going to . thanks for the review
Yeah, for normal camping the Pathfinder is more than enough. I think the only people that could actually get their money worth are ultra-light backpackers.
Love my titanium cookware. If you can afford the price you won’t regret buying it.
I agree I still use mine all the time.
For me, saving the weight is key. Just ordered the Keith Titanium canteen.
I'm sure you will really enjoy using it.
I love the canteen handle on the stanless steel cup
It really helps keep it balanced in a fire. I do find that the handle can be an issue when cooking on a canister stove.
if the titanium keith set had a wide mouth, like the PF system and a wood stove option, i would not hesitate to buy it.
I do like the wide mouth for cleaning and pouring into. Maybe they will come out with a upgraded version some day.
As I see it ... If I was planning to hike the Appalachian trail, I might be concerned with the weight. If not, an option would be to buy three(3) Pathfinders for basically the same money so you will have spares. :)
However, if I did buy Keith's titanium, I'd buy the Pathfinder case to carry it in. I like it much better.
Yeah, for normal camping the Pathfinder is more than enough. I think the only people that could actually get their money worth are ultra-light backpackers. I actually like the Keiths pouch better. I like they are both really thin but the Keiths are slimmer and have a place to put the lid. Both are good it all comes down to personal preference.
I just recently got the stainless steel Pathfinder canteen set. The canteen itself seems to be very nice. The wide mouth is certainly better for pouring things in. The threading on the cap is rather subtle. I very much like these larger kidney shaped canteens that hold a bit more than the standard 32 fluid ounces. 37-39 oz ain’t much more than the usual 32 oz, but it’s something. The canteen cover is weakest link in the chain. The cover is a bit too small to comfortably fit the canteen. The early 1900s style handle on the canteen cup is a bit flimsy, but not as bad as reviews had initially led me to believe. I still prefer the butterfly handles, though. The Pathfinder canteen is a good stainless steel canteen, I think. I have not yet acquired a titanium canteen, so I can only go on what others say on them.
The only advantage of titanium is that it is lighter. In my opinion, if you are happy carrying the weight of the Pathfinder there really is no reason to invest the money in a Titanium Canteen.
This is an old video but i still want to say that the main difference to me is the design. I hate (despise really) anything with those floppy butterfly handles. So to me the question is whether the Keith canteen fits inside the pathfinder canteen cup because that will make it the best system for me!
If I could just purchase the cup on its own from Dave's store I would.
The canteen does fit inside. It is a tight fit and rubs on the sides, but it does fit together. I also prefer the handles on the Pathfinder canteen cup. Sorry, it took so long to reply to your comment.
Although some people erroneously think that the material is lethal (it is if you eat it) I will stick with my alluminium Russian VDV canteen kit. I've been beating on it for years now and Im pretty sure its going to outlive me.
The only reason I don't use aluminium is that it takes a lot of homework to find a good product. There is a lot of cheap low-quality aluminium products that just don't work or hold up. If you do your homework they can be great and I have seen some aluminium kits that outlast the stainless steel versions I'm just not educated enough to find those kits.
@@newageselfreliance fair enough! If you can score the VDV kit I highly recomend it.
Both are very nice. I already have the Pathfinder and LOVE it. I really feel the Pathfinder will last me for as long as I'll ever need it. Good video Buddy 👍🏻👍🏻John
The Pathfinder is bombproof. I am really happy with mine as well. The only reason I'm switching to the Keiths is that I spent all that money so I might as well use it.
My Pathfinder fell from like table height and the handle came right off.
I have the Pathfinder and like it alot but it is a pig (a bomb proof pig) when it comes to weight. Looking at the weight savings in the Keith, its a tough decicion. I really do want the Keith, maybe I'll spring for it and if I like it and can sell the pathfinder. I do like all the features of the Pathfinder system. The stove works really great over a Dakota Fire Hole and its a decent digging tool. I would like to know if the stove and cup fit the each system. I can tell you that the Boundless Voyage Titanium Canteen Cup and stove will fit the Pathfinder Canteen. This does cut weight down by 1/3, but you are sacrificing some outstanding features.
The bottom half of the Pathfinder has straight walls and the Keiths has a tapered bottom. So the Keiths canteen fits inside the Pathfinder cup but the Pathfinder does not fit inside the Keiths cup. Also, the handles on the Keiths Canteen Cup are lower so they don't fit into the stove as the Pathfinder cup does. However you can put the handles of the Keiths cup inside of the stove, it's a tight fit and it does scratch your handles a little but it can be done. Hopefully, this helps. Here is an Amazon affiliate link if you look at the About This Item section it gives you all the dimensions of the canteen and cup amzn.to/3QjIDcM
👍 Nice overview.
I have owned both and sold the titanium kit.
I have used the Pathfinder Canteen/Cup system for many years and am completely pleased with it. I have found this kit to be bullet proof. Also the stove portion works well as a pot stand for a Trangia alcohol stove.
However, I do not start out in the morning with the goal of covering miles like a through-hiker might do; so the weight savings might be more important if that is your interest.
Having said that, at 73 weight savings is becoming more interesting to me. Consequently I am trying a Nalgene Oasis Canteen combined with a Boundless Voyage USGI style titanium cup (with both handles and bale) & stove. With the metal cup I disagree with Mr. Canterbury that the canteen needs to be metal. My initial testing indicates this new kit may be the best choice IMHO. And, the cost for all 4 components (canteen, cup, lid, stove) is about $70.00.
I always carry my titanium and a plastic canteen. I'm not worried about boiling it out. I carry an eyedropper with bleach in it. If it gets funky I could clean it in the field without any problem. If something were to hit it really hard or if you were to drop it very far the Nalgene would crack and break. You condense the plastic and I guess enough trauma would break it but it seems like it would be harder to break besides I have too many canteens as it is to try the Nalgene one. I have a plastic military one that has a filter in it that will filter out just about anything. Maybe the lid would fit on the now Gene bottle. Who can say
I only like having a metal canteen because it makes a good backup in case my nesting cup cracks or breaks. It allows me to utilize the 2 is one and 1 is none theory without carrying extra things. That is a great price for a full set. I might have to look into getting something like that.
@@newageselfreliance I understand what you are saying about 2 metal containers and once thought the same, clearly in my choice of the Pathfinder Canteen/Cup system. However, I then realized how difficult it would be to crack or break a stainless steel or titanium cup. I guess I could lose the cup, but thus far after decades of camping I have never been that absent-minded. Of course, anything is possible. 🤷🏻♂️
I forgot to say I only use the bleach in the plastic one. Titanium is a natural antibacterial. I usually just wash it out real good at home. Also you can use the drops of bleach to sanitize water. And the chlorine will evaporate out of it
I bought the Keith titanium set.. no complaints at all.. however I do with I could find a stove like the path finders set up... ESPECIALLY IN TITANIUM
the wood burning stove is a nice backup but I don't use it all that often. Setting the canteen next to a fire works just as well for the most part.
It looks like it would nest in a GI canteen stove.
I have Both and are great in their own rights with advantages and disadvantages. I like the Titanium better for two reasons. ( 1 ) When heated , the titanium canteen cup cools quicker then the Stainless Steel does , letter you pack up quicker. ( 2 ) The other is obvious , The titanium set is a lot lighter in weight. The titanium canteen cups , I have the Keith ( 23.7 oz / 700 ml )and wanted a larger canteen cup so I got the Maxi Titanium cup. ( 32.1 oz / 950 ml ). Inside it I have Firebox Titanium Nano Gen2 stove and X case , a Titanium Evernew burner & TiTrivet , GoBites duo utensil.
Yeah, when I first use the Titanium I couldn't believe how fast it cooled down. Then I worried about eating out of the cup itself because I thought my food would get cold. I learned that when empty it cools down really fast but when you keep hot food inside it keeps its heat really well too. It really is amazing stuff.
Pathfinder great canteen. Can be used as a weapon to throw at small critters if needed it's so heavy
That would work. I wouldn't recommend it, but it would work.
Thanks for share, Cory .
Thank You so much for watching.
I think of buying Keith but worry about the cap. Some say it can leak. I'd want to take it in my sleeping bag over night occasionally, but if it leaks then it's a disaster. My old plastic canteen takes 2,5 turns to open the cap but Keith only 0,5 turns which already is a warning sign?
When it comes to lids it's always a gamble. I have heard complaints about almost every bottle leaking. My Keith canteen does not leak at all. However, I have heard some people have had problems. I would suggest getting one and testing it right away with tap water, both hot and cold. If it leaks you can send it back and if it doesn't you can rest assured that it will work.
Hey Kory, thanks for the review and comparisons. I have the Pathfinder system and indeed it seems heavy even before you even put water in it. Would like the titanium, but can't see myself paying almost $200 for a canteen! guess I'll have to suffer with the extra weight and more features..
If they brought the price down I think they would sell a ton of these Canteens. Yeah, they wouldn't profit as much on each unit but I think they would make more in Volume of sales. Water is one of the heaviest things to carry so bringing the weight of the container down would help a lot of people.
@@newageselfreliance Yeah, I think they would make up for it in volume too. Still trying to reduce my base weight to make up for the weight of water and trying to find a sleeping bag that's light but warm and isn't so bulky as the MSS system.
@@jeffrichards5106 I've been looking for a good bag for years now. Sleeping bags are one of those things for me where I don't trust the company because I've been burned on weather ratings in the past. At the same time I can't afford to try a bunch of different options either. I might have to just buy bags as I can afford them and make videos on what I find.
@@newageselfreliance Yeah, I hear ya. I was thinking of getting a Snugpak bag, but they're almost $200 which I can't afford right now. I'm a cold sleeper, so the bag has to be the rating it says it is. Yeah, it's a gamble. Especially when you're spending a lot of money.
Fom my needs that Ti is WAAAY Outa my price ! Thanks for this Kory ! Hay Caroline Scratch 4 Mora ATB T God Bless
I think the Ti is out of most people's price range. That is a lot of money for something that just holds water.
The matter of fact is, they are not that expensive in China. Bought the exact same Keith titanium set on Taobao, which happened to be on sale at the time, cost me $117. Normal price I believe around $130-140, still cheaper than you get them from other countries.
I'm sure the extra cost comes from over sea shipping.
I bought the Heavy Cover years ago... I have always considered getting the SS kit but have never got it yet. But I see where the pathfinder store is now selling titanium also......
I don't know if you would need both. The Stainless Steel isn't going to do anything the Titanium can't. I would recommend saving the money and getting a better canteen carrier and putting together a lightweight kit of your own.
@@newageselfreliance sounds like good advice
Weight is not a big problem here, Cause water is the most of the weight
That is why I like the lighter containers. The more water you drink the lighter it becomes. Having a heavy water container means it's always heavy.
If it was serious 10-15 mile days then titanium everything. Day hike 3 miles, camp and go then stainless will do just fine. My perfect canteen would have a sawyer filter attachment
I'm surprised Sawyer hasn't come out with a lid with a straw that fits canteens or water bottles. Having an inline filter for hiking and then a standard lid for at camp would save on weight and keep people hydrated better.
Short answer: Why kitchen chef´s doesn´t use titanium pots`?
Because it´s worth to cook with it.
It doesn't hold heat very well. So cooking big meals would be very difficult with titanium because the pots are only hot when you have the heat on.
Great comparison!
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
I’ll buy from your amazon account when the time comes. I’m still humming and haunning about investing in titanium. I’m wondering if the wood burning cage to go under the cup to cook with as from th3 pathfinder set would work with the titanium set. I’m thinking buy both and use the wood stove from pathfinder for the titanium cup and canteen. What do you think or suggest?
The wood-burning stove does fit on the Ti system. You can buy the stove itself from the Pathfinder website. I wouldn't buy both I would pick one and if you do pick the Ti you can get the stove on its own. www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/products/stainless-steel-canteen-stove
My Pathfinder fell on the ground from about table height. The cup that is. Its handle fell off. They replaced it, but can I really trust the new one when I need it in the field? I love, love, love the Heavy Cover/Keith. I value the weight.
Every company in the world has factory defects. If you apply that logic to everything there is nothing that can ever be trusted. That being said if the weight is what brings you the most value then the Titanium is the only option for you. There is nothing as strong and light as the Heavy Cover/Keiths Canteen. I trust my pathfinder canteen but I do carry the Keiths way more since I got it. I think it's one of those things that once you get a taste for something you just can't go back to the way it was before.
Has anyone had issues with the center seam on these canteens in terms of keeping it clean?
The Pathfinder is easy to get a dish brush into, so you can clean that seam. In the Keith canteen, I use a toothbrush to clean inside the bottle. Pouring boiling water into them also helps kill anything that might be in there.
@@newageselfreliance Thank you for the tips!
For me, it's titanium all the way... pretty much the same properties as stainless steel, at half of the weight. You can get quality titanium gear on Amazon and eBay as cheap as chips nowadays. My entire setup including 1600ml pot, 500ml pan, 800ml kettle, stove and spork will all nest inside one another, and in total actually weigh less than a medium sized Zebra Head Billy Can.
It is super light. When I got my first Titanium pot and pan set I was scared it wasn't going to hold up at all. It felt like a toy almost. Once I started using it I was blown away when it comes to how durable and easy to use it is. I really do enjoy Titanium as well.
Excellent video 👍
By once cry once. As long as you are happy they are both good options.
Hay! Any advice on cleaning the mmss bags. I wanna wash my green bag but I don’t know if I should put it in the washing machine?
I do not put mine in the washing machine. The best way for me is to keep them as clean as I can and then I just use a damp rage and wipe them down when needed. Here is a video I found that might help if you really need to wash your bag ua-cam.com/video/3F-7idvPsEU/v-deo.html
Will the stainless steel one fit in a British PLCE water bottle pouch?
I have no idea. The Canteen is the same size as a standard Military canteen only the bottom is much wider. The sides of this canteen come straight down instead of tapering inward.
I did not turn off your channel. : ) But the price is out of my budget zone.
That would be $ 207.21 in CAD : (
Good comparison and review.
It is VERY expensive, to be honest I was hoping if I emailed them they would send me one for free. That didn't happen lol. I'm probably gonna use the Keiths Canteen because I already own it and it is so light and durable. So you will see it in videos but the Pathfinder is just as good I would be happy with that one as well.
I just Purchased the Pathfinder Campfire Survival Cooking Kit Canteen. I am Returning it. The Lid or lids do not fit correctly and it does not hold its water.
I have had my system for years now and I have had zero problems with leaking. The quality control must be an issue because I have heard of others that had problems with their lids as well.
Good Intel sub'd today sadly all my Kit is Used GI gear! Sometimes yearn 4 some new items !
If it works stick with it. Learn as much as you can from it, that way when you do get the new gear you know exactly what you want or need. I started off with very cheap gear that wasn't very good and because of it I now know exactly what to look for in the gear I want to buy.
Hi where can I buy that pouch for heavy cover?
The pouch I have came with the Keith Titanium System amzn.to/3iL23GH
Should I be worried about the durability of the Keith's titanium?
I'm not. I have been using mine for years and it has held up really well. Keiths makes the canteen for Heavy Cover. They are the exact same canteen the only difference is the logo.
So I have been thinking about picking one of these up for a while I pulled the trigger on it and it's great the only thing that is weird is there an internal lip that stops the last bit of water from coming out like the neck of the canteen comes down past it's shoulders by almost a centimetre you can feel it with you finger (by feeling the inside the bottleneck, the very bottom part) , does yours have that or is mine a lemon? Keep up the good work
Mine has that as well. But the lip is only on the shoulders. Mine is flat on the front and back of the canteen. So when I'm drinking I can get every last drop but if you pour from the shoulder sides the water does get inside that lip until you turn it and pour from the front or back side.
Titanium is cool. :-)
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
You know, I came to the conclusion that aluminium is the best.
Lighter than stainless steel, heats up faster, keeps the heat longer, so basically saves my energy and the energy I need to heat it up.
Downside is the questionable long term effect of aluminium to the body, but stainless steel, to be more specific the chrome in it, is even more questionable if abrasion finds its way into the body. Trangia products, the duossal stuff, seems to be abrasion happy. Clean it with the rough side of a sponge and then wipe it with a white towel to see that its turns your white towel grey on and on. I don't have that problem with the Pathfinder products though. So much about "made in Sweden" vs. "made in China". Anyway, occasionally I prefer aluminium, since I'm not an ultra light packer (cotton tent, canvas backpack and such) and therefore appreciate saving on some weight. Titanium sounds fancy, but the price...and as someone already pointed out, it doesn't do great with keeping the heat. I once had a titanium pan from Snow Peak and it sucked to fry eggs in it. So in the end, there is always a hook. Stainless steel for summer - aluminium for winter.
The issue I have with aluminum is that it isn't as durable as stainless or titanium. I feel aluminum bends more in my pack. It doesn't break but I'm always worried when I see it bent out of shape. I always worry that it will crease and split open. No matter which cook system we use there are always pros and cons.
@@newageselfreliance I hear you. I noticed such flaws especially with the cheap aluminium products. My 80s Trangia cocking stand doesn't suffer from that, but I've also seen such old stuff with heavy signs of use. I haven't tried the hardened aluminium yet, although that one seems to be thinner too. I guess it depends on the person and what kind of tasks are done with it. As long as I am not falling straight on my back, I doubt I ever bent it badly. But such thing might happen if someone goes through all kind of terrain or even has bad luck. It's kinda tricky to travel alone. With a group, I'd say someone should carry iron cooking stuff only. Most heavy, but that would be my first choice, if it wasn't so heavy, which makes it impossible. Btw, stainless steel, I also like that you can expose it to fire, in a way that aluminium could't handle and would be destroyed. And of course you can cook eveything in it, without having to worry about acidic foods. It's still a tough choice for me though. Depending on the situation, I might not even get my hands on acidic stuff and could create fire pits or not and have to save on ethanol fuel. Well, such thoughts and events make the thrill about it, so I guess that's fine. haha Cheers!
Yeah, there is a lot more to think about than people think. I don't think the perfect cook system exists for everything. Each trip, each meal it all changes what we wish we had. The best we can do is pick a system and practice using it within its means.
In my opinion and experience the pathfinder cap sucks, like really sucks. Got a heavy cover coming in next week, I hope the cap is better then the pathfinder one.
You will have to let me know if the plastic cap works or if the titanium one is the way to go.
@@newageselfreliance will do.
I'm going with the titanium cap mostly because of the look over the plastic cap but no leakage from either cap unlike the patherfinder bottle. Also the heavy cover bottle is not as wide as the pathfinder which I like as it goes in and out of my carrier better.
@@fatboyEDC It seems like no one ever uses the plastic cap. I wonder why they even bother including it?
No. Is the answer to your question not worth the extra lol well not to me. But to some they want the lighter one. Which if I got one ide have to find cheaper one so wouldn't be as good but the Pathfinder with the stove that's cool. So may be with 50 plus but ide try to find one closer to 20 lol. I can make the stove piece nut hey thanks for sharing I no your vidoes help alot people. Thank you for that. God bless
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
@@newageselfreliance always bro.
I am sticking with stainless it not worth all that for titainium.
The heavy item is the water 1litre is 1 kg.
Wont make much difference stainless or titanium
That is why I like the lighter containers. The more water you drink the lighter it becomes. Having a heavy water container means it's always heavy.
Out of my price range as well.
I think it's out of most people's price range. That is a lot of money just to hold water.
To me, I think that i can taste the stainless. I know that is weird.
I can taste the Stainless too. You get used to it after a while. The other thing that really helps is those flavored drink mixes. They help hide a lot of the taste that comes with Stainless bottles or filtered lake/river water.
You realize you can buy a stove that fits the cup right ? And you don't have to buy a titanium when you can buy aluminum so it will be light if you really have to know how much is a cup or any other measurement. Some people will take a punch and just make a little dent at the water line.
So the price is the only real issue. I bought my titanium canteens back when I was working the pipeline and I had plenty of money. I could not afford one today in the Biden economy. Also Dave has lowered the price of his canteen set so it's even cheaper and you save more money than $100 now.
One advantage on Dave's stainless set if you can put a couple of d-rings over the handle and stick a stick in it to hold the cup up when you're cooking. In fact his next Generation cups come with that on the handle. Which you cannot do with a butterfly handle. Of course I carry a piece of wire around and it could go around either cup and you can hang it on a small chain. Again it doesn't really matter which one but the stainless steel handle would get in the way of hanging it like a pot one thing I worry about the stainless canteen is the plastic lid. If you were to ever drop it and it landed on something hard it could shatter that lid or at least crack it. Where is the middle lid would not break but of course both canteens would be dented the only difference is one of them you would still have a lid on
I've never had any problems with the plastic lid on either the canteen or the water bottle. It's a Bakelite cap, just like the old radiator caps in old cars. They are built tough. I tried that ring-with-stick trick, and the weight of the stick made it hard to keep my cup from tipping. Also if you take the stick off the rings fall and you can't get the stick back on. I'm probably doing it wrong but I haven't figured out the advantage of that technique yet.
Here’s the thing.. that titanium canteen will last many lifetimes. $100 more.. I spend far more than that in groceries every week. It’s not that expensive for what it is.
If I had to pick between a canteen or weekly groceries I would pick the groceries every time. It is a really good canteen and I'm glad I got it but I don't feel it is an important piece of kit. The stainless steel will last a lifetime and you will be able to invest that same $100 into other parts of your kit.
@@newageselfreliance yeah that’s true. I wasn’t trying to convince people living by-weekly on their income. Please, people, be responsible with your money!

Avoid titanium for cooking. Terrible conductivity.
It works well for boiling water and making soups.
If you wanna, save me the money, mail the titanium set to me, thanks. hehe.. no really, send it.
All products are mine to keep. Especially the stuff I have to buy with my own money. Save up and buy once cry once. Even though I don't know if the Titanium is going to live up to your expectations. The only advantage is how light weight it is.
