    The Minstrel fell but the foeman’s chain could not bring that proud soul under,
    The harp he loved ne’er spoke again for he tore its cords asunder,
    And said “no chains shall sully thee,
    Thy soul of love and bravery,
    Thy songs were meant for the pure and free
    They shall never sound in slavery!”
    😔

      td, as you may klnow . . . it's a timeless lyric based on the military death of a good friend of the poet, thomas moore. the friend was killed during the rebellion of 1798. i have two versions of it on UA-cam, one piano and one guitar (alas none w harp)
      wiki: . . . . . . . Thomas Moore (28 May 1779 - 25 February 1852) was an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. Their setting of English-language verse to old Irish tunes marked the transition in popular Irish culture from Irish to English. . . . .[Minstrel Boy is a perfect example!]

      @@SteveonLIThere is an excellent version of it played on the harp here on youtube, I’ll find it. The original Irish music Moore used for his lyrics was called ‘The Moreen’ (Gaelic ‘Moírín ) celebrating an Irish Queen from around the 12th c, she was allegedly named Moírína (Marina) after a beautiful mermaid was captured by local fishermen of the North East coast. Which was probably a bottle nose dolphin. The following video is of a rare musical box playing The Minstrel boy as the core theme for a complication of fantasies & variations on Irish Folk music, which led the owner having the music transcribed and arranged for a piano duet that was performed in June 2023 in Germany. Hope you enjoy & your comments are most welcome. ( ua-cam.com/video/rHGU8kjD8H4/v-deo.htmlsi=1bxLsMfLF12Bc3G8

    I don’t care if you are from a big city or a little town or what generation you are, there’s always 1 or 2 things every person who was alive when the event happened will always be able to remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard about the event like 9/11

    The Minstrel Boy to the war is gone
    In the ranks of death you will find him;
    His father's sword he hath girded on,
    And his wild harp slung behind him;"
    Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
    "Tho' all the world betrays thee,
    One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
    One faithful harp shall praise thee!"
    The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
    Could not bring that proud soul under;
    The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
    For he tore its chords asunder;
    And said "No chains shall sully thee,
    Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
    Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
    They shall never sound in slavery!"

    Quick question, why is an old Irish ballad used in the commemoration in 9/11? Is it because of the huge Irish links between the city and emergency services?

      here is my educated guess answer: . . . the direct connection between 'minstrel boy' and 9-11 here is really only being made by ME . . . for the purposes of this post. . . i know the song very well and i play and sing it frequently. i saw connections between the song (its lyrics specifically) and 9-11. i saw multi-parallels . . . . . and no, i am all but certain this band did not specifically choose to play this song for this event. 'minstrel boy' is one of the 2-3 default songs played by every pipe/drum band i have ever seen here in the US. simply put, they ALL play it, every time you see one of these bands, bar none. - - plus - - i know the words well, and it is conceivable that few if any of the band players know them . . . so . . . the connection here really comes from my own close relationship with a broadly used song . . . and how i saw it fit into this specific occasion. . . . you can see the lyrics below

    I remember that day very well and yes this is my generation's pearl Harbor. I remember sitting in my English class and the phone ringing from the office.. One of my friends got called down to the office. I remember3 That she never came back and took the rest of the day off because our mother was picking her up. I. I live in Pennsylvania and and it was the fact that they could not get ahold of her Uncle and that her Uncle was supposed to work in the towers that day. Luckily for her, her Uncle took that day off. If he didn't take that day off he would have just been another casually.
