1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight 427 Muscle Car Of The Week Video #61
This week's video features a car that looks sedate as can be but reveals a startlingly different personality once the key is turned. The factory-built 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight features an R-Code 427 for power, and nearly all the non-essential items have been deleted or lightened for better drag strip performance in the Super Stock NHRA class. There were around 200 built, and this one is as true to form as they come. One of the many factory lightweight Muscle Cars in the Brothers Collection.

I'm a Ford Guy and love many FOMOCO Products. But, the 63 R-Model is my favorite. I've been blessed to own a non-lightweight one since 1974. Bought it from the original owner! There's nothing like driving a dual-quad big block FE! Long live the Galaxies!

My first car was a 63 1/2 galaxie 500, with a 352 3 speed on the tree, had a lot of good times in that car, paid 800 bucks for it in 1966, and it was pretty clean, drove it till i got drafted in to the army in 71, wish i had it now

I bought one just like that, white with red interior, solid as a rock out of Texas last week. Arriving this coming week. Will probably put a 406 or a 427 in it. Paid a lot more than 800 bucks for it, but half of what I'm seeing other examples for on line. Glad to have it.

Mopar man here. But the 63 R-Code Galaxie is definitely one of my favorite Ford's ever. It's between this, a 66-67 R-Code Fairlane, and a 70 Cyclone 429 SCJ Drag Pack. The 69 428 Fairlane Cobra Fastbacks we're awesome too

Yea I know. They only made like 50 of em in 66 and I think maybe 100 something in 67. Don't know the exact numbers but I know they're really scarce and most of them led a pretty rough life because they were basically a race car. Most 427's ended up in full size Ford's

There's one Ford I would love to have. It's a 67 Fairlane,. Station Wagon. But the guy ordered it with a 428, Cobra Jet, and a 4 speed. Only one made. The big boss man had to sign off on it. They wasn't supposed to do it. How awesome would that be?

I was 15 in 1963, a year short of my license, and lived in Ford's backyard, Dearborn, Michigan. In my opinion, 1963 was the best looking model year in American car history - EVERYthing was good looking that year - Chevy, Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac, etc, etc, and the Galaxie 500 /500 XL fastback was the king of the group, the best looking full size car ever made. I haunted Stuart Wilson Ford week in week out in January, 1963, going crazy waiting for the fastback intro, along with the 427 (only 406s before)....... What an era that was! A guy down the street from me had an older brother with a 1963 Catalina coupe with a 421 tri-power, 4 speed. Dark blue inside and out, bench seats, even! That was "MY" king car, until January brought me the ultimate............ ;-)

This car does not have the bubble hood with the hot air vent. It also does not have the cold air setup which removed the high beam lights and substituted a 4" flex rubber hose going to the carburetors. All of the lightweight cars were built with these features. The initial 20 cars also had fiberglass panels on the doors, but the remainder of the cars did not. The Ford lawyers were concerned that some owners might actually drive them on the street and if they got "T-boned" in the side the fiberglass door panels would offer no protection at all. Another little known feature was the cars had the lighter-weight frames of the low-price standard 6-cylinder models.

“Muscle cars” existed long before the gto or max wedge cars.
      -303 cubic inch 1949 olds 88
-331 cubic inch 1951 Chrysler Saratoga
-317 cubic inch 1952 Lincoln Capri

      -300 hp 1955 Chrysler C-300
-327 cubic inch 1957 Rambler Rebel
These cars ALL existed long before the gto was introduced for 1964. Maybe generic motors capitalized on the term more than the others, but they damn sure didn’t invent the muscle car.

As a long time drag racer my question is what does it weigh? Seems like they would mention that 🤔

Actually, the car when set up by Holman and Moody (blue printed engine) and Socks& Martin carbonation adjustments still did not perform until I built an very exacting and precisely built exhaust system for it (it being the limited edition light weight model, really basic, not the 500XL with all the trim but the light weight model of which there were only 64 which were all sold to Ford dealers only back then from whom I (at 16 years of age) purchased one after it had about 70 miles of drag racing on its odometer) and still technically fully "stock". The major problem was it was so powerful it would break the axles all the time unless I installed a Detroit locker system (specially built steel axles were too expensive then). No way did the 500 lux model you presented turn low 12's at that time in 1963-4 right off the lot. Best times with this type car then was about 12.83 or so mostly because you couldn't really stop the tires from spinning too much all the way down the track even with slicks. And despite the current dialogue the Ford 427 (with a radio installed, had to have music when you race back then) actually was beating the light weight Chevy 427 often (those that were not cheating, if there were any no cheating) run by the Chevy professional dealership teams (some of who were seriously cheating with fuel, not gas, roller cams and bored and stroked engines and just used enough throttle to beat their competitors and not get torn down and proven to be cheating. Just to set the record of the time straight by someone was there and did that.

They weren't all white! I had a friend who owned one that was all red. It also had a fiberglass top and trunk lid. It ate 409's for breakfast.

I do not know the curb weight, but I do know these were about 425 pounds lighter than a regular Galaxy 500. That's a hell of a difference!

So I have a 1963 ford galixie 4 door is it still considered a muscle car?

    • @oregongaper
      @oregongaper 7 років тому +1

Still considered? It was never considered a muscle car. No one ever accused my '64 Mercury Murauder fastback with a 390-4V of being a muscle car, either. In the '61-67 full sized Ford/Merc line, you really need to have two door with the top-spec motor before you go calling them muscle cars, like a 390('61) or 406('62) tri-power or a 427('63-65), and to lesser degree the('66-67) 428 (pre-Cobra Jet). Side note- Mercury had a 410 in '66-67 that was a combo of off the shelf parts. It wasn't a hi-po engine, but it was bigger than a base 390 (Mercury was positioned in a more expensive segment, ergo more engine) and they would run forever.

Had two white ones with red and one in blue with black, of course I had the more common 390 variety. Only the blue one was a 4 door, drove that one while in Germany, come to think of it that one was a 289 Still crazy fast for a big ass car..

My 65 Galaxie 500 FE 352 fast back weights only 3340 lbs. YES! The 63 1/2 only weighted about 300 more lbs if even that. This because in part because they did not have 500 miles plus of damn wiring, insulation, and fat ass millenniums driving them,ha ha. Being a Vietam army vet, obesity was pretty much a none existent issue in those great days.No one guzzled sodas or McDonalds (.35 cents).
