- 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 427 4-Speed R-Code-Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #190:
This is one of those cars that sets your imagination on fire. A long, Raven black ‘64 Ford Galaxie 500 that glistens like a prize fighter in the ring, with a heart just as big. Ford was good at building big and comfy family cars, but they also did a heck of a job stripping them down into racing versions, like our R-code version with it’s 425 HP 427 powerplant. From The Brothers Collection.

my Mom bought a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible in 1969 w/ a 390 engine, out ran the police one night on her way home from the Marilla Grill at 2am , she made left hand turns and turned her lights off and floored it ... made it home 5 minutes before the cops got there and had my Dad tell the cops she was there all night sewing costumes for her go-go dancing day job ... cops let my wild redheaded Mom go !!! ... fastest car I ever drove 2 years later !!!
Good story the 390 was a good motor for street driving plenty of power and perhaps better fuel economy than the 427.
My grandfather had a 64 Galaxy with the 390 and it was one fast car I couldn't imagine a 427 in one!
THESE were the years of true muscle cars! They stood apart from all the other cars in the line up. As a kid, I would always look for the badging on the car. That alone made the car special. My preference is toward MOPARS, but any muscle car from Ford, Chevy, or Pontiac is what the 60’s and early 70’s were all about, REAL muscle car sound and performance!
Thumbs up from a Chevy guy. Miss the 60s
That car is beautiful. The sound of that engine is mechanical music, and those exhaust manifolds are works of art. These T-bolt predecessors had a tough time against the lightweights put out by Pontiac and Chrysler back then, but were still pretty competitive runners. Thanks Kevin!
I wish my black Galaxie had a 427 instead of the 390. But I still love her!
Shoot that's my favorite car dude that's nice you got one I'ma purchase one soon if the price is right
@Lee Sullivan I would rather have the 427 too, but that 390 ain't bad. It has a lot of potential. I've got a 390 HO in my '69 F-250.
Nice presentation ! Beautiful car.
As a side note. The intakes on 1963 1/2, 64 (this one) and early 65 are of the Low Riser design, as well as the cyl heads.
Medium riser 427's were introduced mid 65.
We had a 1963 burgundy rag top with a 390 4 speed.., my brother & I called it the woo woo car do to the exhaust note..., love the old muscle cars..., great job!
I've been and always will be a huge Chevy fan, but damn, this car is freaking gorgeous...
I use to race mine. Went to the track many times. Car was a completely stock 1964 Gal. XL. Well except for tires. They were bias ply and on the original wheels. I was able to put G70-15's on them. I rebuilt the engine and was able to keep all original internals including the factory cam. It also came with 4.11's Best et was 14.06 @100.5 mph. These were fun cars! Mine was Vintage Burgundy . It was an R car and the only other option on the car was a reverb in the trunk.
love vintage burgundy.
my grandfather owned a ford dealership and brought one of these home. he gave it to my dad when i was little couple years old at the time.. and this is what made me love hot rods(a red one)that and.my grandpa's knowledge love and ability to have any hot rod built..if it was fast and rumbled my grandpa brought one home..
flashback: 1963/64 I was 17 -- and would have given my right arm for one of those. Dad was a little more conservative and bought a new '64 Mercury with the venerable 352 which my twin and I learned to drive in. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
This brings back some great nostalgia for me. I was just 15, and a family friend ordered one in Raven Black, just as this one. He ordered it with bucket seats tho. After owning it apprix 3 mos, one rainy night at around 50 mph another driver pulled out in front of him, totalling the new Galaxy. So, he ordered another, this time with a bench seat (to better accommodate his family) . A month into owning the second one, another driver blew a stop sign, totalling this one as well. These accidents both occurred within a mile of each other.
P.S. This ended my friend's 64 Galaxies ..... By this time, the 65s were out, so his next new one was a 65 Galaxy station wagon ..... 289/automatic. (True story)
1964 galaxie, my favorite and my dream car.
I love it, and the sound of those solid lifters. 4 speed too!
That car is a work of art and engineering. My god that car is awesome
Loving all these fords!!!!!!
3:04 Best sound track ever on your channel
My grandfather had a desert rose 1963 1/2 Galaxy XL with buckets and a console. I still think it was one of the most beautiful cars of the era.
It definitely was 👍

Thank you Brandon, we appreciate the kind words and promotion!
i agree. for the amount of car lovers in the world.. this is almost the equivalent to porn for most of us.lol..you should have way more subscribers.
Loved the 64 Ford, my first was a Custom 500 with an automatic trans. They still offered fender skirts in those days. Heat and AM radio was the best, miss the wing window on these models.
lovely big black and powerful 1964 - .
Ronnie Boucher i feel in love with these when i seen men in black 3
That is one of the best cars I've seen anywhere my favorite year for galaxies . All your cars r beautiful and clean it would be impossible to pick a favorite great show guys.
I have known two people in My life that have owned cars exactly like this one same color and all. The friend I know now bought his car brand new and will not part with it for the world. It runs just like the day they brought it home. It looks like that car will always stay in the family.
One owner cars are special.good for them.let it rip !!
I had a a 64 XL 427 R code. Vintage Burgundy, nice car. Sold it back in 96
Ran 14.0 in the quarter
Amazing what was considered fast back then. It would probably have around 285 whp on a Dynojet.
Both the above times are very strange and bad for the R coded beast, because around 1965 in Columbus GA, I saw a 64 390 Galaxie either a 4 dr or fast back that was mostly stock with the C-6 run low 14's with the a/c on, no shit!!!.
@@juanequis6951 Check your facts when the C6 was released by ford. No way in 64.
@@jayr8843
Did he say the C6 was original?
I HAVE ALLWAYS LOVED 1963/64 GALAXY 500 MY GRANDFATHER HAD THE390 IN HIS
this old ford is awesome, I would love to have one, I am a Chevy, Mopar guy, but sometimes you have to cross the line!
Exactly!! I think Chevy and Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler had the best body designs, and some damn powerful engines! But can't beat an old Pontiac, Ford or Oldsmobile either!!!!!
I'm a Mopar guy. But,... I am pretty dam sure I can find a spot in my garage for one of these, red one if you please!
Big blocks are a thrill....small blocks are fun!😎
I had a 62 with a 352 and two 64s, both with 390s. I've never been too much of a Ford guy but I loved those 64s above any Ford ever made, mustangs, fairlane, torino, pickups, it didn't matter, that 64 Galaxie was perfect to me, wish I never sold them...but most of us wish we had one car back or another.....
You had 3 Fords but not much of a Ford guy ? Why bother to even Comment, you must like to hear yourself Talk !
@@jerryparks6123 no I'm not but loved these 64s. Wish I still had it!
As I own a 1965 Mercury Comet that now has a 331 stroker, C4 with a 9", I'd say one of the R code Galaxies would be a welcome addition
A resto mod on the undercarriage would make this beauty handle like a beauty. Old car looks with modern handling is the perfect combo . The old recirculating ball steering and polyglass tired ain't cuttin' it.
Beautiful cars. You had to put a "Bubble" hood on it asap. The lightweight versions had the Bubble hood, light fenders, and bumper from the factory. Bud Sheleberger won Stock at the 1965 US Nationals with one. Sponsored by Archway Ford in Baltimore.
I had a 64 427 R code
Got me in a lot of trouble when I was a kid.
What a beautiful Beast. Love the big cars with the big power. Gtreat Vid.
I like the big brawlers like this Ford!
I love the way the exhaust goes back up the tail pipe at 2:35 😁
It is such an unassuming looking car until you hear that rumble.
Very sleek looking
Dream machine!
Some day maybe. My Dad had one in 64. Both my Brothers have one today. We have a Galaxies. Club.
Itz Super Bad Ass. Love all that chrome on that black beauty. Front end is Super Tight too, like the big round tail lights on the rear as well
I have always loved Fords. But I lived in the 60s and I know Chrysler Mopar ruled the day. One exception, the Ford Thunderbolt.
Mercury cyclones, and light weight ford's, and 442 .
Correction Ford sohc Cammer 427 Ruled the day! Chrysler 426 and Chevy 427 couldn't touch them ! SOHC with 1 - 4barrel carb 616 H.P. ,2 - 4 barrels 657 H.P. ! .
MY DREAMCAR
Awesome Ford galaxie 500!
My friend had one, he custom made his own intake with twisted carbs. He ran street slicks and was the fastest around. When he gave my a ride he's tape a $20 bill on his dash saying try to get it when I hit the fuel. You could not see the street, nothing but hood ever time a couple feet of air. He later went to mercury marine then designed their monster motor
We had 2 galaxie one with a 390 and 352
Solid lifters and a lumpy cam....gotta love American big block's.... #FordAllDayEveryDay
Even though i'm biased; 64 was a damn good year.
Big or small I like them all.
Someday, I will have one. Regards!
The '64 Galaxie is by far my #1 favorite full size Ford. None of the other years of it come close. And black/black w/ R code 427, makes it just the best. I may be more of a Chevy guy then anything else. But the Mustangs and the '64 Galaxie have been able to interlope into my list of dream Classic muscle machines along with a bunch of Chevys and some Pontiacs. The highest percentage of my favorites just happen to be Chevys. And part of my dream collection consists of a '64 Impala & Galaxie together w/ 4-speeds and their dual quad motors and no power steering or power brakes on either of them. And that's even though many commenters here would probably say that's one of those things that just isn't done, a Ford actually with a Chevy with the owner wanting to keep both and not get rid of the Chevy in favor of the Galaxie. More '64 Impalas w/409s were losing more 1/4 mile races to Fords than previous year Impalas, Bel air, and Biscaynes probably because GM was banned from racing so Chevy could no longer offer extra drag equipment (to go w those 425 hp motors) that Ford and Mopar could with theirs, and more '64 409 w/425 hp Impalas were made with power steering as well as power brakes as well which compromised it a bit along with power convertible tops maybe. That is true. With that said, I'm blessed to really really like the '64 Galaxie, too. And understanding how more people these days would say that a '64 409 Chevy is nothing more than super hype, well the '64 Galaxie can have the more badass color combo that this one has, black/black. Well, if I was really concerned about pleasing everyone here, I'd never be saying anything good about the 409s at all no matter what.
My dad had one of these but his was different in that his was 4door and had bucket seats. Same colors thought love seeing them
Bought my '64 R code XL in the summer of '66 from "Ron Levitt Sells Cream Puffs" in Philly. Kept that beauty until 1969 and sold it for peanuts. If anyone cares I still have a picture or two.
this channel is gold
Ryan Cooper agreed!
Gorgeous!
Full Sized "Gals" Always Beautiful styling !!!! : )
I owned a Red 64' 500/XL w/Red int. 390, 4 Sp/3.50 L North Carolina car from 1983 to 86'
I should have never sold it !!! Still have Big Regrets to this day !
Amazing car! Actually considering picking up a galaxy as an affordable way to get into the ford classic game. Working suckers like me canr drop every dime on a muscle car (although I wish! Wife would say otherwise!) Subscribed!
I like all muscle cars big and small old and new
Takes me back, today AC and heat are standard, to say nothing of tricked out sound packages, but I remember these days, you paid for heater, you paid for nearly every accessory, but you could order up your dream ride too...another difference from today and basically package cars, you take the package, regardless of if you want all the garbage or not.
Very cool car - we like them so much we just bought one. Stay tuned for the video :)
My first car!! TY for the memories again...you've got a new sub!
That is a Beautiful Thunderbolt you have.
awesome cars
'64 Galaxie = one of the prettiest cars ever made and my personal favorite Galaxie. I miss my '64 XL. (the dog-dish hubcaps on the featured car are '63, not '64)
This beast was our family car back in the 60's. Red with black interior bucket seats nicknamed 'The Wild Cherokee' due to Mom's heritage.I remember doing 140 mph down
Hwy 99, California in the middle of the night more than once in 1965. I taped a sign in the window that read: "Warning- This car runs on 90% nitro Driver runs on 90 proof".
Suuuuuuuure....
64 Galaxie is my favourite American full size Ford what a great looking car.
i love the 1964 galaxy 427 4 speed they are so much fun to drive i had one from the junkyard miss that car
Note how low the oil pan is...in 1971, a friend of mine DAD'S had one...black, 427 4 speed...we were out one Friday night....he went over a dip and sheared off the oil pan...
nice car, love those big wheel, and the bench seat, it does have a sound setting there and idling,,,,,,, but I really like the GM cars, but that ford is really cool
Love it. So sinister.
I had mostly Plymouth Barracuda's. But I always did have a shine in my eye for the Ford big muscle cars.
Nothing looks finer than the 64 Galaxie,,for a full sized car..
Very nice looking car
What a beautiful beast.... #AntiBowtie #ChevySlayer
is it the best looking car in brother's collection? according to me it is! i really would love to own one of these, specially the black one ,
Beautiful car! Subscribed to the channel as I've found myself looking at this channel constantly.
Sounds like a challeging brute.I like it!
I Love those Thunderbolts. And the 427. My Favorite 1 is White turns a 612 gear. 427super stock 4 barrle 4speed. Fastest 4 speed National Records.
MORE big FORDS plz....
my god that is a amazing car...SOLD.
super cool
That car is lovely
That is one bad ass Ford
A lot of people dont realize ford was actually the one who came out with the "HEMI" style head design befor mopar did.
No they didn't. The first Mopar Hemi engine came out in 1951. Mopar engineers first started using the hemispherical combustion chamber design while Chrysler was contracted with the government to build aircraft engines during World War 2 and they started applying it to their car engines after the war. The first ever American muscle car...the 1955 Chrysler 300...was powered by a 300 horsepower 331 cubic inch FirePower Hemi engine with two 4 barrel carburetors. Chevy, Ford, Mercury, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile had no V8 engine that made even 200 horsepower in 1955...let alone 300. That was a huge horsepower number back then and a respectable number even by today's standards. The 56 Chrysler 300 was even more of a beast than the 55. The 56 had a 340 horsepower 354 Hemi or an optional 355 horsepower version that wasn't recommended for street use. It wasnt until 1958 that another manufacturer was able to build a car more powerful than the Chrysler 300 with its 380 horsepower 392 Hemi or 390 horsepower fuel injected version. That manufacturer was Mercury with its 400 horsepower 430 cubic inch Super Marauder engine with Tri Power Induction...a one year only engine option
@@jeremythompson9122 ford had the ideal first on the hemyfercal combustion chamber dodge got the ideal from them go look you'll see.
@@fordnut4914 ford sold engine design to dodge ford was stupid ! they traded the hemi over the 427sohc !
Those Galaxies were a very strange exotic car. On one had they could be large luxury cruiser and on the other a fire breathing monster car.
A granny could drive one or a boy racer could drive one.
Good looking car. I'm always a big block man ,as long as It comes with a four speed
This is the exact car same engine size and all I'm saving up for.
Had a 63. and a half 427 3sd and a 64 390 4sd Holman moody loved both especially the 64
At 2:33 you can see the exhaust sucking into the car.
That's Badass!!
I love big powerful car...
Side oiler was introduced in 65 ,did better at oiling the crank.
In 65, I had a 300 HP 390 XL 4 speed fast back, red with a white vinyl roof with awesome white bucket seats and interior those great 60's XL's were famous for. Only the 390 was A lazy pussy cat compared to the bad assed 427 in this 64.
One thing I'm happy to see on this beautiful 64, is the period correct, OEM round mufflers at the very end of the car with their downward pointing pipes. Mine was tops though for picking up hot chicks with it's long console and the space between them was wide in-conjunction my 6 ft 1 would barely touch the back seats back support, I could bang away in comfort and style all night. This awesome car was like having your perfect designed sexathon car. After getting that dreaded notice in Mar 29th 1966 "Greetings You are hereby inducted etc. So I went on my last 2 weeks of freedom with a fuckathon. Due buck naked and covered in sweat after 12 nights of this wild shit, due it mar. it was pretty cold. I came down with an upper respiratory inflection after 5 days of test etc.and too ignorant tor ask to see a army doctor and so sick I thought I was dying. 2 days before sent to BCT, I recovered, or the Vietnam era brutal BCT training might have killed me.
Oh man I loved that car and owed a 66 7 Liter in 68 after returning from Asian hell as my treat. Now that was one hell of a car. FORD RULE!
I saw one of these Galaxies it was white it sat ,behind my friends apartment, it had a 390 i would check it out ,sure was a nice car it was just sitting there covered in dust and dirt it finally got towed away it was around 1976.
I like all American muscle big or small.
Beautiful and fun car. The hubcaps however that are on it are for a 63, 64 had flipper style 10" hubcaps that said "FORD" twice in an arc around the flipper.
Would be cool if Ford would make a galaxie or fairlane again. Modernize it like the new mustang but keep it plain jane like the old ones.
the fairlane only went straight it didnt like to turn !
After looking very close at this alleged 427, I noticed the distributor had vacuum advance. The only ones I ever saw (72 yrs old) had mechanical advanced dual point distributors. Plus the idle was not quite right sounding, like raggedy and not with the proper precision clicking, whirring these bad boys sound like, having owed a 61 fair lane with a 406 block, medium riser 427 heads, long tube cast iron 427 headers, a radical solid lifter cam, never knew the brand because Boswell Ford in N.M. built it for drag racing. It had the 3, 400cfm Holley tri power set up the 406 had.The shift points were 7500 rpms. Also if you got down on one of these beast like he did, their-ed be a huge cloud of smoke 10 ft.high. Plus the car would go sideways with those skinny tires. Yep, somethings wrong here, because I never saw a 60's era R code as sluggish and ill sounding like this one, NO shit guys.
Oooooomyyyy 🦄
👍
I wanted to see the floor shifter.
