Hi Glenn. I have been a power cap user since getting into turning a couple of years ago. It’s a brilliant bit of kit. You only need to look at the filters to see what protection your lungs are getting! However, I have not found an effective extractor yet, nor any sound advice on how to prevent the contents of my workshop getting a thick coating of dust in a very short time!☹️ Any chance you can give us a few words of wisdom on this topic?
I have a dust extractor, I use all the time. I use a vacuum when sanding as well. I have a Record Power AC400 Air Filter. My stuff still gets covered in dust everyday. The only way is dusting everything off at the end of the day. This time of the year, a coating of dust can stop rust. Nice little rhyme.
A few days ago, I looked into the differences between US vs UK PAPR regulations. The US only has one protection level under the NOISH regulation, while the UK has three under EN12941 (TH1, TH2, TH3). On the surface, the NOISH requirement appears to be more strict than TH3, but I think they're roughly equal in application-regulatory standards aren't the easiest things to parse and compare between countries. The Axminster system is TH1, which allows for 10% inward leakage and uses a P1 (80% filtration) filter. For comparison, the Trend Airshield Pro is TH2, which allows for 2% inward leakage and uses a P2 (94% filtration) filter. TH3 units allow for .2% internal leakage and use P3 (99.95% filtration) filters. All of that is to say that the Axminster unit might be better suited for green wood. With the amount of dry wood that you turn, I would encourage you consider at least a TH2 rated unit.
Thank you for your comment and welcome to the channel. I also have a Trend Airshield. It gives me nothing but neck ache. I have had my Axminster one for the last 8 years and haven't had any issues with it. I re-seal the edges every so often to prevent as much leakage as possible. I also use a Record Power AC400 Air Purifier in my workshop. The main point to this was for those who don't wear anything except glasses. Trying to get the point across to them. Thanks for watching.
Glenn, I very much commend you for regularly talking about lung health. Not many others do, and it's a very real and huge issue. Technically, I agree with Matthew, but this can easily get too complicated, and those we try to protect just switch off or the solutions are just too expensive. Most people being very protected has to be preferable to just a few being very, very protected. Perfection should not be the enemy of the good.
I have the rutlands which is basically a 3m ripoff and its TH3 its brilliant, no weight on the head. Glenn maybe give rutlands a shout they are very good to deal with
Glenn. You are right, I wear the mask that I won a few months ago every time I am in front of my lathe. Love it, thanks 👍

@@celticwoodreations I have looked at that one and the 3m, but I can't have a hose going down my back. I would keep getting caught up in my work shop.
Very valid, face mask so important. Sanding machine for piles?😂
