      Now don't get me wrong. If someone comes in and runs his/her mouth about how great they are at building PCs or fixing them: let them run into a wall.
      If a beginner like this guy comes in, who goes like "I've built one PC" give them some lifelines. By that I mean they shouldn't have to ask for that help, as they'll never know when they're stuck. Instead, when someone in the LTT team sees an error that would be a deal breaker, let Linus step in. Like "do you know where that connector goes?" Not flatout saying where it has to go, but hinting at the fact that it does have a function. Most people are pretty good at taking such hints.
      It's also a good idea for participants to just take a break for 2 minutes, clearing their head. The clock will keep ticking, but those 2 minutes can help a lot in order to calm down, and maybe look at things differently

    This kind of reminds me of this series Donut has where they take out certain parts of a car, have a subscriber fix it under a set amount of time. The staff also discusses the parts they "screwed" up, and how they would have approached the problem, which they take as a way to educate the audience about troubleshooting as well. Of course the thing is, not all cars are the same, but the general troubleshooting is more or less the same.

    I'm probably going to be the odd one out here but I kinda think it's really cool that instead of saying "sucks to suck" you still ended up giving both teams the prize because meeting you and the LMG crew is a huge thing for people and while the memories are awesome, they got to go home with something they can physically touch and see to remember such an awesome experience by.
    Obviously I wouldn't tell them flat out in the beginning that there's a chance they could bring home something awesome but it could be a deciding factor on if they've been a good sport about not winning or something like that. In the instance of this video, you said you wanted to help out so Kelvin could win in the last 30 minutes and I think that's fair because not everyone has your knowledge or thought process. That's just my opinion though. I guess if I were in a position like Linus, I'd have a blast giving people tech that I have access to that not many others do. Still a great video series. • @e21big
      @e21big Рік тому +3

      To be fair though, if you didn't know that all of the components is functioning and good, that 30 minutes mark is totally unreasonable time frame - maybe not even an hour. If you aren't a pro PC builder of at least GN level, it would probably take that long to just disassemble and reassemble the system, leave alone checking the individual kits for fault.

    • @harryhall4001
      @harryhall4001 Рік тому +1

      @@e21big Yeah I think the key here is that the hardware is only unplugged, I would sort of expect that when working on something deliberatley disabled. I also don't think it's expected to hit the 30 min mark. I think I might be able to hit that, but 1hr is more likley. The thing is I actually disagree with some of Linuses advice here, you don't need to remove everything like the motherboard to see if it works. Check essential cables first, get it to post, and then diagnose based on what does and dosen't show up in the BIOS or Windows.
      Obviously if somethings is actually broken it's more complicated, but still doable in 2 hrs provided it's only a single consistent failure.

Virtually every connector is "keyed" and so long as you can closely follow instructions, you'll almost certainly be fine.

      No need to do that, really. But the first thing he needs is a screwdriver and a flashlight and quickly start to trace every cable. This should be a 5 minute, top job. Then check to see that everything is bolted down correctly and inserted correctly - by re-seating it all. Then work out secondary issues. POST should have happened no later that 20-30 minutes in.
      If he was in a real crunch, yank it all out, assemble it outside of the case. Post in 10-15 minutes. Do everything by 45 minutes. Reassemble and power on. My guess is this is what Linus was expecting him to do since there is a workbench with tools right there.

    • @JaredElza
      @JaredElza Рік тому

      @@josephoberlander Agreed. I don't think tearing it apart immediately is a ever good first troubleshooting step. He didn't know how much or how little had been done. At the end it sounded like it wasn't really that much. I would have started with power. If the power button does nothing, check the power supply switch, front panel connections, and then power supply connections to the motherboard, in that order.
      You should be able to see if you can get it to POST and then check in the BIOS for CPU, RAM, drives. Check pump and fans are running, etc.
      Then you can get into Windows and make sure everything is detected and run your benchmarks.
      All in all, I think he did fine and it worked out in the end. From my chair it's easy to say massive disassembly is not the approach I would have taken, but under the pressure and stress of the people in the room and the cameras, I might not have even been able to form complete sentences.

    I hope I speak for a lot of us when I say, while it would be Incredible for us on this end to have more chances to win something, we are always rooting for the underdog in this and want them to win.

    I was pulling for him to win the entire time. Loved the helping at final 30 minutes. I was on edge of my seat and I loved it. Still love LTT after all these years and always will be liked and subscribed! Thanks LTT Team for the late hours and dedication to do thise video and make content for us!

    This would be a sick series. I Wana see Linus try and fix a PC like this. Let a bunch of employees do it. Watch as a meta develops for speed PC diagnostics

      Wouldn’t need to be a ballin PC either. Obscure hardware could be even better. Test Linus (or others) on stuff they haven’t seen in 10 years

    Really thought I would not enjoy when Linus stepped in, However I was still on the edge of my seat and heart racing to beat the clock. Well done on this episode guy's, now lets bring on a series of it. Also well done to Linus doing this while all of LTT channels were deleted at the time.

    An easy way to make sure the participants have enough time (which is what im assuming the point of these are) is to build in some ways to gain time back. Wither it be simple side quests, easy trivia questions, etc

    Anyone who was salty about the games being rigged would be happy if it were them. You all do a great job of making it fun when you do include your audience and often at their expense, as your thank you, you rig it in their way. I think that's as good as it comes man and anyone who feels otherwise is just mad they didn't get picked. Keep up the incredible work you all at LMG do and keep doing things the Linus way. Its why most of us who have been here for over 10 years are still here.

    I actually thought the previous approach of you win regardless was pretty fun. I enjoyed this though too. I have to say that keeping the issues minimal is going to be important for people who don't regularly build computers. If you make it too complicated most folks will get completely lost. As me how I know

    i have no experience in troubleshooting and fixing computers but i have built a few here and there and in my opinion it would be easier to tare down the whole system and put it back together because then you can also get a sense of what has to show up when posting for example how much ram and how many drives there are supposed to be and then if things aren’t working after that then i would start troubleshooting
