I just received the results of my DEXA. As mentioned in previous comment, I am 68 y/o, petite female, used Hypervibe vibration 10 minutes daily for two years(no side effect issues), weights, brisk walking, followed your Master Class and Bone Foundation Classes recommendations along with whole food nutrition and supplements. I had been told by health providers that without medication, the best I can expect is no bone loss. My results were 2.2% improvement in lumbar; 1.8% in right femur and 9% improvement in left femur. I still need improvement in the lumbar however, I am very motivated by the results. Thank you for all your information.
Good for you. Don't you love to prove the docs wrong? I have ostiopoenia. I work out with freeweights at the gym for back adn arms (weakest in bone density,) and leggs adn hips are good. It strengthens us and feels good. I swear it's helped my "clutziness" and balance too. I'm 65. The doc is right, it stimulates bone to grow. A comprehensive plan, yes, with nutrients, supplements, all sorts of exercise.
This is amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing all of this, small changes and staying consistent is key. I am so glad to hear that you have improved, I look forward to your future updates!
This is so inspirational! Actual results via DEXA. I have improved my osteoporosis through weight training and I've been debating whether to add the plate into my routine. You've convinced me! thank you for sharing.
Congratulations, so pleased for you. I tried a similar regime 5 years ago, bones kept weakening. Long story BUT I found out too late that the bone loss was due to an over active thyroid, not picked up despite regular bloods.
I really appreciate you taking the time to sort through all the chaff to get to the facts, as much as possible at this point. Although many of us research ourselves, we don't have access, as you stated, to all of the studies. Thank you so much! I feel much better about what I'm doing with my own vibration plate. Blessings to you!
ALL studies mentioned in this video are accessible without subscription. I checked all of them. Does that mean access to raw data? No. But do you need such access? Again: no. The publications that you can access are already very detailed. Just look up the studies using the PMID reference.
Raw data is actually important. There is so much cheating in science, and many scientists don't even understand their data and draw the wrong conclusions. Often exaggerating the results. There are ways to get behind pay walls.
Just wondering what kind of vibration plate you own. It’s a big investment to get the expensive ones and I’m still wondering if there isn’t anything less expensive but meeting standards described by Dr. Doug.
Excellent! Thank you for your perspective. I have been wondering about whole body vibration for couple of years and wanted an unbiased, independent perspective from a knowledgeable source. Thank you so much for unpacking this complicated topic and reviewing the scientific literature. I truly appreciated this video!
Thank you for a great review. Wish I would have heard it before I bought my maradyne a couple of years ago. I bought my power plate in 2003 and I've never had any detrimental health problems because of it. Repairs in that amount of time have been minimal and the customer service wonderful. I've had on and off mechanical problems with the maradyne since I purchased it. Customer service has been good. They said I could send it back for a repair but since the problem is not consistent I haven't done that. For the record I'm a quite healthy 75 year old with no significant health problems however I do have osteoporosis. I eat a healthy diet and work out regularly as well as using the power plate and maradyne consistently.
The don't make my model anymore. The cheapest Power Plate model runs approximately $3,000 (with no support post). I think that is about what I paid for mine in 2003.@@carmenross1077
Excellent review and very helpful. I have a life pro plate because it was more affordable for me. I found that the unit also helps with balance. I don’t just rely on this unit, X3 bands, peloton, yoga, and diet. I follow a carnivore diet. I am a small frame woman. 103 pounds , 5 feet tall, BMI 20, fat 11 pounds muscle mass around 85. Being small frame, maintaining bone density is an important factor in my fitness plan. I am close to 70 in age.
Agreed!! I just recently got the Lifepro Rumblex Plus! I'd gone to Physical Therapy back in the spring for a knee issue & they had me using what I believe was a Rumblex for stability & strength training! I'm tiny like you and do all the things as well - though I'm not Carnivore, I do eat at least 1 gram of protein (animal source) per pound of body weight. :) Don't you find the Lifepro relaxing yet energizing? I love it!!
I'm 68 years old, overweight, sedentary, with osteopenia. I got my cheaper version of a whole body vibration plate because I read that 10 minutes on it would replace an hour long walk. I've suddenly had issues with swelling, foot cramps, and blisters. Not to mention it's summer in Florida so my morning walk was getting almost unbearable for all those reasons. I've used the vibration plate twice daily for about a week now on the beginner 20 minute program. Swelling is gone. I don't get blisters, obviously. Minor joint pain is almost unnoticable. My balance is better and I hadn't realized that it was a problem but I feel like I walk like a dancer now. (You know how you can tell a dancer; they glide instead of just clomping and waddling along. LOL) I feel like I've taken a nice walk after I use the plate. My mood is even better. I just stand on it so far. I change positions slightly every minute when the bell chimes and I can feel the jiggle differently with each different "pose." I'll probably start going on my walks again soon, too, because I love walking and I even love getting my hot sweaty body into the cooooold shower afterward. Thanks for this evaluation of the controversy. I won't worry about harming myself.
Hello , I am now at this time of my life in the same position as you were , can you please share the model you’ve used. The ones on the ma rhetoric are quite expensive for my budget.
@@wendyedwards4806 I have the AXV Mini from Amazon. It's got different speeds or programs. I'm using program 1 right now. It's variable for 15 minutes.
@@Dr_DougLucas Lloyd R. Shaw here. I was there from day one, and I know all the original parties involved in the Vibration Training and Therapy field. And fully understand their original intentions ( which all seemed to be to help people ) What I learnt quickly was once money got involved, full disclosure and truth went out the window. I was originally Power Plates Product Manager and before that was in e-mail contact with Dr Clinton Rubin and Dr Bosco and Hans Schießl ( founder of Galileo ). I only helped Power Plate out because they were stuck with moving forward and I could help. I left PP for a range of ethical reasons I am allowed to repeat after I won a Court Case 15 years ago. But I do not think going into brands needs to be done, just their behavior because it is so widespread ( they just med the way for others) . Many companies have unfortunately followed down the same path with basically the marketing departments running everything, including the science. So I can and will answer ANY question you have, and help explain things to you and piece together much of what you have already worked out ( congratulations of putting the effort in, I was only expecting the worst from you, sorry just life experience ). There are topics you have not touched on that are REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT when it comes to research , results, which results, safety, ergonomics , limitations on different designs , construction of machine , and composition etc.... Please take your time to read my paper I ended up having to do out of frustration to help clear up the replication crisis , plus bring safety issues and bio-mechanics into their criteria for research. . rdcu.be/c9RJE Please note: We focused on CP because that CP groups globally are targeted by many marketers anyway, and with the VT community, one company was skewing data and NOT filing incidence reports during research, etc..... while emotionally blackmailing parents into buying a machine the same price as a small car, that was never ergonomically designed for anyone with a mobility issue. ( hence the research and results stalled 20 years ago ) They now sell using fear or a "promise" they can never keep. I hope one day to hear from you. Kind regards Lloyd Shaw P.S. I do not sell machines to the public and turn almost all studio sales down. As once you are on a full functional machine, supervision and training on safe but effective poses ( for the target issue ) is a must. Most would be buyers are vetted out very quickly. And we have been doing "free for life" to serious disabilities ( life threatening or independence taking ) since 2003. Not grants from any third party, all internal policy. I am also sure you will LOVE to know what full Vibration Training is meant to replicate ( I know you would automatically know why )
I have been using the Marodyne machine now for a year and improved my bone density by 8%..I have also been working on weight machines at the gym, added prunes to my diet and continue with all the supplements that are recommended.. D3,K2, calcium and magnesium as well as collagen... I would have been happy with just maintaining my osteoporosis, so these results were very encouraging.. however my doctor still recommended using drugs... lumbar was 3.1 and hip 2.1. She did not even acknowledge the improvement in my scan.....Thanks for your great research Dr. Doug.. I recommend you to many
WHY are so many doctors so crappy? They're not stupid, is it just stubbornness? Being married to their beliefs instead of the data and science? Just baffling and unbelievably infuriating. I'm EXTREMELY happy for you on all of your hard work paying off so well & finding your own path to wellness instead of accepting 1 doctor's bias that was obviously not right for you 💚
@@MystiqueOfWonder it is not that they are crappy it is a cree they sign to only use medicine not natural stuff even if they know about better things they are not allowed by their own vision and degree to send u in that direction.
Thank you, Dr Doug, for your willingness to conduct further research. It takes a big person to admit that there is more to investigate. Bless you for all that you do. 🙏
You say ask your doctor. I did and they said no. Most traditional doctors are not willing to think outside the box so don’t bother asking them about new approaches.
I completely understand, I am sorry to hear that. Checkout our health span nation if you have not yet, this could be helpful for you. You can find more information here --> www.drdouglucas.com/healthspan
Agreed! My chiropractor said it was really good for some people. I was a Crossfitter at the time. I can say that when I have a knot or pain from overdoing exercise, standing on that thing for 10 minutes is miraculous!! All pain stops for me. I do one of the pre-programmed levels with varying speeds. Don't know about bone density, but I've lifted weights and done body weight exercises for years.
They say ask your doctor to cover themselves from being sued but traditional medicine will say No. I personally will not buy one because these things are for those with money to burn. Just get moving and build through diet and other exercises.
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!! I’ve been reading several of these studies and how they would contradict each other. I was going a little crazy. I came to the conclusions that you did, but I was still not sure I was right. I really appreciate everything you did and everything you read, and that you shared it with us. I bought the power plate, as my best guess as to what worked. I have enjoyed using it and felt a lot of benefits with my lymphedema, pain and restoration after workouts. Thanks to you I feel a lot better about my purchase.
Well done Dr. Doug! It took me ages to dig through the 2023 meta, and I also found problems with it I couldn’t find answers to. That was the end of my looking at vibration plates as an option
Thanks Dr. Doug for an excellent series and superb analysis. It definitely prompted me to subscribe to your podcast. A year ago, I called LifePro, gave them Marodyne’s specs. The HZ setting was straightforward and they recommended the second setting, which is the up and down vibration. Been using it since.
Hello, that was very smart of you! So, the second setting is the vibrational level (or similar level) that Marodyne uses? How do you feel about the doctor saying the cheaper versions weren't reliable? Maybe it's me but I thought the whole point of the video was to conclude that WBV (as a whole) was safe, using specific settings due to findings, yet at the end, he said they were less reliable because they weren't precise.
@@wendyedwards4806I have been using the VT007 from Vibration Therapeutics at 30Hz for 10 minutes a day. The results for me have been very beneficial. I also exercise with weights while using it. It us much cheaper than the marodyn and very well made.
Thank you for all the information. For me I think I will pass. I'm 76 years standing on a vibration device is a No....but I wish everyone much success in using the device.
I'm 76 on 2016 I was told I had osteoporosis I took ostera metagenics after a year my hip went to osteopania. I neglect and stop taking supplements, last year my dexa shows I got osteoporosis worst then before. Blood test shows I have low vit D. Scared of drugs so I am taking Vit d vit k1 & Vit k2 plus fortibone collegian plus a low impact vibration having my dexa next year. so I am hoping it has helped. I am quite active.
I love using my vibration platform. I am 75 and i got one for bone density, but it has helped my knee pain and helped my legs to feel less stiff. I had read that it is being used to help dogs to recover from leg injuries. My dog loves standing on it too. I have the LifePro Rumblex 4D vibration.
Thank you for all your great info I have been strength training since I turned 60 I’m 75 .. walk two miles/day ( got my personal training certification at 60 so I would know what to do) and S train 2/ week I got the the Vibrate health gentle machine 2 mo ago it’s 110V/30-50 Hz use 10 min a day continuous ( no off on) I able able to lift more as example pull-down machine I went from 50 to 60lb so if nothing else it improves muscle strength and thereby probably improves balance! If you don’t fall you don’t break things usually!
With absolutely no evidence, I make the assertion that jumping is the best way to increase bone density. I started with tiny little baby jumps, and believe me I have severe osteoporosis, and eventually achieved 2 hertz for a few minutes at a time. This has the added benefit of radically increasing my vo2 max and moving a few liters of blood around. I do have a vibration plate (cheep) and it is wonderful for my digestion and feels nice. Otherwise I am unsure of the benefits. My retinas are still attached and my dementia is no worse than usual. Next I plan to start walking in a weighted vest, which I also have no evidence for. I will also book a flight to a heavy gravity planet at the first opportunity as it seems a logical progression. I really think progressive overload is key, and this sort of thing should begin with a minimum dose, just like with drugs, so the body can adapt. It takes longer but it is worth it.
I appreciate your humor as it keeps us, “grounded.” Your comment about starting slow and then increasing gradually is sound wisdom on any venture we start out on especially for seniors to remind us, that we no longer have bodies that we can use, abuse and rebound quickly. The only thing I’ll add to that principle is that when starting out on any behavioral change, there must be enough of a demand that you feel some level of irritation. If it’s too easy, “it ain’t a thing and don’t count.” Once you’ve adapted to the demand is the time to up the ante.
EXCELLENT - thank you!! I've been following Marodyne for many years and have always found the fact that they ran their own study - and their fearmongering about competitors' machines was extremely problematic. I'm a tiny human (4'10", under 80 lbs) and have pretty severe osteoporosis though have never ever fractured (Dexa from 2022 was -4.5 hip, -3.3 spine - I consider those numbers to be pretty good because they didn't go down too much from 2017. I also have pretty severe scoliosis - double major (approx. 48-degree curves both thoracic & lumbar). I expect my DEXA numbers to be even better when I get a new one this year because, over the last 2 years, I've been exercising MUCH more (added lots of resistance training), and eating more protein (at least 1 gram per 1 lb of body weight - mostly through animal sources). Back to vibration... after my own research over the years, and having recently gone to Physical Therapy for a knee issue (coming from my weak hips), where they had me doing some work on a vibration plate for balance/stability & strength training (mostly stepping up & down on it), I decided to go and buy a Lifepro Rumblex Plus which was just like the one I used in PT. It was less expensive than the Power Plate, but has the capability of at least 30 hertz in pulsation mode plus and it also has the oscillation mode which is wonderful for balance. I LOVE IT!! I have been using it daily (sometimes 2x) to exercise on (squats, step up & down on it, arm weights, etc). I find it loosens me up & energizes me so that after I've done 10 minutes on it, I get on my treadmill & walk at a faster, peppier pace than if I hadn't used the vibration plate. I've also used the plate at the end of the day - not doing much on it and afterward, it makes me feel as though I've had a massage - very relaxed. So, will it help with bone density? I'm confident it will help - it seems to surely activate muscles (why else would I feel so loosened up on it - even when doing nothing other than standing on it)? It's also a great way to do some stability/balance training - and it feels like a massage!! :)
@@Dr_DougLucas you're most welcome - thank you for your wonderful videos... I love how you go into depth on so many topics relating to osteoporosis - just on vibration plates- numerous videos - and I love how you're objective - even though you've had these people on your channel!! :)
If you have severe osteoporosis and scoliosis as I do… don’t do Osteostrong. I wound up with 3 herniated discs and worse pain after 3 months. Wish I never went! May be different if you have a straight spine. I have a LifePro and will start now that I have started Fascia release and Massage for my atrophied leg muscles (the pain has gone on for years) Also will add walking as I feel better.
Wayyyyy back when I was in my late teens, early 20's. I went to a gym that had the vibration belt we used around our waist, inner thighs, buttocks. It felt great. It popped everything back in place. There was also a barrel that had smooth spindels. We would lean into the machine for our tummy and for our upper thigh. It gave your thigh a massage. It also felt great. So I'm giving this a try. I won't use high impact. But my goal is to feel more energetic, weight loss, less depressed, better blood flow, and better oxygen intake. Helping my bone density is an added plus.

Excellent review. I am 76 and was just diagnosed with osteoporosis last year. I have been in the osteopenia range basically since onset of menopause. I first heard about vibration therapy a couple of years ago. It sounded like it was basically the cure-all for osteoporosis. Being skeptical, and not having the money to buy a vibration plate, I was in hopes of finding a gym with one to try it out. Not successful on that. Your article has helped a lot to clarify the information. Thank you.
Wonderful analysis Dr Lucas! My practice has seen a trend of perimenopausal women with osteopenia & fractures. I use the Power Plate at my gym. I am a dancer, so I actually dance on it) hopefully that is ok) along with sitting on it to do abdominal exercises, and I don’t think you clarified if sitting on it is o.k, but the Power Plate site has exercises for a core workout. What I see at my gym are people using a very high vibration. When the trainer first showed me how to use it he said “ The higher the better “. So I would imagine some of the ill effects ( headaches, vertigo) are from people improperly using the settings. I have been on Power Plate for 7 months and have lost 2% of my body fat without changing my diet ( but I do lift, dance, walk, Zumba, yoga, and try not to ever over eat, but keeping off the fat & building muscle is a constant challenge for most women over 50. I will keep getting my money’s worth out of my gym & stay on the Power Plate!
6:55 I stand on mine ten minutes in the morning while I do my red light therapy and listen to the Bible. I will admit though, before I got the red light, I wasn’t using my WBV much!! 😬 Now, they are both a priority and get done every morning!! ☀️ THANK YOU for this great analysis!! It’s very helpful! So happy to find your channel! 🎉
What is your opinion on heel drops or bouncing on your heels to vibrate your bones for bone density? There are a couple of osteoporosis PT's on UA-cam who recommend doing 30-50 a day, spaced out 10 at a time ....
I've been doing some of those too, not really knowing how effective they might be. But I do notice a fatigue in the legs after about 30 at a time, so it seems like it might be doing something. If not the bones, at least for the muscles maybe?
Problem with asking, your doctor is, and I know you have to say that, is most likely 90% or higher will tell you not to do it. And the biggest reason will be they just don’t know much about it if anything at all. I can pretty much guarantee of the different doctors I see they will all say they would not advise it.

Thank you for your informative content. I had a serious TBI about 3 years prior to trying a vibration plate, started low and slow but got headaches. My neurologist told me to stop using it. Definitely check with your Dr. Every person has a unique health history.
I had a total hysterectomy and several lymph nodes removed. I watched Dr Leslyn Keith talk about lymph drainage problems after lymph node removal and started jumping on a rebounder but can't continue after cold weather hits so I bought a vibration plate. I'm hoping it will help continue the lymph health. I watch a clever cowgirl on UA-cam that puts an old pony on one and it has helped his attitude. I'm excited to see what it can do for me.
I bought one of the less expensive devices that teeter totter. I turned it up too high and tore the labrum in my hip and had to have hip replacement surgery.
Oh gosh ! Did you follow all Safty procedures ? Read study the manual , Listen to all the trainers advice ., start slow .? I mean starting at the lowest speed and time ? Warm up and stretch before you start ,or take a walk to warm up your muscles ? Did you have a physical Problem that may have caused the dislocation. ? Wow really need more details to evaluate your Post . take care sorry you suffered like this !
It's annoying but before doing anything to your body we are told to check with your doctor first. He would check your bone density. Perhaps it was the straw to break the camel's back. I talked with two ladies one whose femur broke when she picked a bag of groceries up from the car trunk. The other just stood up from a chair and stood when her femur broke. Both on Fosamax for years and was told all was ok. But it wasn't.
@@tedmed7349 I got a bone scan, and it revealed that I had osteopenia, and the scan gave me ten years before I had a fracture without any intervention, and the Doctor wanted to put me on medication, without any knowledge as to why I'm losing bone mass and slow growth of new bone. I declined., and I have been bullied, by the doctors to take medication, Then I found Dr Doug, and "I have stated my plan of attack, and recovery. I use a P.E.M.F. mat for different reasons, but it is also supposed to increase bone density by modulating calcium deposits in bone and regulating mineral metabolism. It may be good for those for whom vibration therapy is not an option.
Thank you Dr. Lucas for this honest detailed review. The 2016 study you highlight that showed a 1% increase after, I think 6 months of WBV only, while even resistance training lost 1/2%, seems to validate the efficacy? If no one gets hurt and no one gets worse and even improves, albeit modestly, by using just the WBV machine, which was the group that improved I believe, then other than the cost being prohibitive for a lot of people, I'm missing why you wouldn't want to add it in? Regarding using commercial standards for home devices, that old saying the dose makes the poison comes to mind. What is safe for 10 minutes could be very deleterious for 8 hours. About your advice about asking your doctor, hmmm, I know you have to say that for legal and ethical reasons, but in reality, as mentioned before in a different Q&A, my doctors want clinical trials showing reduced fracture/fall risk, if they have even heard of the therapy, my doc did not. And as you have stated before those studies are too long and expensive to do for a non pharma modality.
I agree, having to ask these conventional doctors as a joke 😏. As you said, half the time they’ve never heard of things. What are they going to go to read the studies … Or just say, “I’m not in favor of it@, to preserve their ego…
I am so disappointed that Marodyne does not build bone and that the PowerPlate is a better choice. I saved up and bought a Marodyne last year😢. I did so much research for a couple of years on the Marodyne and thought it was worth the investment. The am in great health just bad bones. So bummed about your conclusion.
I have had the Marodyne for nearly a year, using it faithfully 2x/day. My DEXA is due later this month so will see if any improvement. I discovered that if you place hands on hips, the vibration is carried into wrists….which is the only problem area for me.

I use an inexpensive platform. After 2 years of daily use for 10 minutes sometimes twice a day I had a 16% improvement in bone density. I exercise also
Thank you so much for this.... I have been so confused for so long 😅... Now I know what information I need to ask of Bluefin (My vibration plate) ... Once again... Many thanks, very much appreciated.
I think this was a good coverage. And thanks for doing the research because you know how to do this properly. My experience on the vibration plate at Osteostrong was acute vertigo and neck pain which took a couple of weeks with a Physiotherapist to resolve. I was interested in the results achieved by your second guest with his use of powerplate and exercise and he seems to apply the use of vibration in specific ways with a lot of good results. One of the problems regarding safety, and correct me if I am wrong here, is that the vibration machines are not regulated and if they are to be used as therapeutic devices, I would have expected them to be so. A bit like vitamins and supplements! Anyway, thank you again. More to think about.
So disappointed that you don't seriously discuss any brands other than Power Plate ($1500) and Marodyne ($3,000). If the lower priced models like Life Pro Rumblex really are inferior or not beneficial, why not just say so? Many people cannot afford $1500-$3,000 and an honest evaluation of the other alternatives would be so useful. I wonder if the reason all the professional types are recommending the higher priced models is because they are experienced in using them in clinical settings where the device will be much more heavily used and used by a people with a wide range of abilities and medical conditions and so must be more "heavy duty" and have more bells and whistles. But for a single home user, it would be useful to know if the less expensive models would be as beneficial.
We completely understand and are aware that there is lower cost options, these are the ones we chose to review as they have very high success rates connected to them.
I couldn’t agree more. The higher priced units are completely inaccessible to the vast majority of us. All I want to know is if I would be throwing away money if I managed to scrape together $300 or so for LifePro or something similar.
@@KJ99otis i spoke to my sport’s Chiropractor who has the pricy plate. We spoke on this matter last week and the less expensive plates shred the cartilage of the body.
I have one of the inexpensive platforms. Teeter totter. After only one week with 3 uses, I had tremendous improvement. Climbed some ladders at work. Normaly, my legs would be burning every time. No burn and more strength. Using it daily now
I just bought an inexpensive platform as well. Used it for the first time today. The lower back pain I was having during my regular power-walking workout was gone! I'll be curious to see how this does. I have osteoporosis and have taken many measures to work on that. I cannot live in fear like the traditional dr make you feel like.
Dr. Doug, a couple people in the comments mentioned the VT007 vibration plate by VT Vibration Therapeutic. It does have the up-and-down movement rather than see-saw, it can be set for 30-35 hz, and it is a lot cheaper than the Marodyne or PowerPlate. BUT..."Vibration amplitude: Low (0.7 - 1.2mm) or High (1.5 - 3.0mm)." So regardless of the amplitude setting you choose, it will be variable throughout the session. Can you comment on whether you think this would affect the safety or effectiveness of the device? Is the highest amplitude of 3mm too high?

The same machine was sold by LifePro as their "Vivid" model. I have one...LifePro no longer sells the "Vivid". I bought two...one for myself, and one for my brother who has bad knees from sports.
When I first got my vibration plate, I loved it and it helped my body so much but one thing the company doesn’t tell you to my knowledge if you’ve had a brain injury or seizures, you should not be on these plates at all. I did pretty good for the most part until I started having Greater seizures and more often. I wish I would’ve known that before I bought one because they are not cheap.
Goodness! If they only included ONE study with a Marodyne (like) device--my gosh, in my mind that can't even qualify as a meta-analysis!! Where's the meta? One study is one study. That's crazy. I actually agree with only including high-quality studies. I'm wondering why there's only one high-quality study on the Marodyne. It seems Dr. Rubin has conducted a lot of research and yet I guess the authors of the meta-analysis concluded that they were not of high quality. And apparently, no one else has reproduced Dr. Rubin's results with a good-quality study either. Not a good sign. I got confused though by what you were saying (at approximately the 12-minute mark) that quantity should be looked at too and that there are lots of studies showing benefit in areas we are interested in, namely the hip. To me, that makes it sound like you mean that we should look also at the quantity of studies showing significant benefit from the Marodyne-like devices (since it was those devices for which they only looked at one study) but I don't think that's what you meant??? since you didn't mention the Marodyne-like device having a high quantity of studies showing good benefit in summarizing/concluding remarks and didn't seem to give weight towards these but rather more emphasized lots of studies showing Power Plates to have a good effect. Anyway, bottom line: one high-quality study by the author of Marodyne that hasn't been reproduced by independent researchers is not persuasive. And further, I don't see that these authors can call this a meta-analysis if they only looked at one study for one category. THANK YOU for doing the deep dive and reading the fine print. Also, thank you for making the excellent, elucidating point that looking at adverse effects from using 2G machinery in the work force does not really make for a fair comparison to using WBVs with that G force. And even more importantly that no actual injuries were reported in the studies on the Power Plate. This has been an EXCELLENT review! Thank you so so so much as I've really been struggling to figure out which to buy in the last several months and was really torn and confused. Thank you!
Because I have degenerative joint disease and sarcopenia I experienced a knee injury using a Power Plate with a physiotherapist standing alongside me and guiding me. I am very reluctant to use a Power Plate again :-( I am sure it is more to do with the state of my muscles and is unlikely to affect other people the same way it did me.
I was reluctant to share this as I don't don't want to put people off. I don't think this is the norm. However, I would use with caution if you are like me with sarcopenia and degenerativee joint disease. @@Dr_DougLucas
I'm looking at the VT Vibration VT007, which sells for about $400. The two units specified in this video are just too expensive. The VT unit apparently doesn't see-saw, and offers frequency and amplitude that are apparently in the ballpark. If anyone has used the VT007, I would love to hear comments.
I too am looking at the VT007, reviews are very positive. The owner really goes into detail on the website of the mechanics and how it works. Very grateful for Dr. Doug Lucas' time and energy he puts into helping us. Thank you.
I've looked at this device too. But... "Vibration amplitude: Low (0.7 - 1.2mm) or High (1.5 - 3.0mm)". So, the amplitude is variable throughout the session as you are using it, regardless of whether you choose the low or the high amplitude. Not sure if that is a good thing, a bad thing, or it doesn't matter. Both the Marodyne and the PowerPlate use one steady amplitude during any given session.
I have been using the VT007 for over a year with very good results. Having previously had vertebral fractures my REM scan shows that whilst my bone density is not great, my bone strength is within the normal range. I am happy with that. I also take bioactive collagen peptides and quite a lot of supplements
Lot of construction going on around my house. Some use these "ground pounders" when they are pounding, I feel pressure in my sternum and spine, I leave now until they are through. I wondered if this is actually a danger. The whole house vibrates. Hopefully they are finished. My chiropractor had me on one of these plates, part of the regimen he had for me but I had to keep my knees bent slightly. Is this necessary? Was considering buying one for home. Great video, thanks!

I have a vibrating plate my second. Love them, minor improvements but I cannot afford the 1k+ machines. It's similar to a massage effect. Do wish a good study on AFFORDABLE plates were done. Great for balance. I'm 67 with osteopenia.
As a user of these boards it has its drawbacks for people with spinal issues joint ligament including individuals with pace makers or spinal surgeries and implants. All these people can’t use a vibration device also you can sit on a chair and put your feet on it and you’ll get a full body lymphatic drain by sitting on the chair half way with hands on your hips.
I'v e been using a Lifepro Rumblex - the top of the line plate from Lifepro- for a couple of years, 10 minutes per day. 2 months ago I awoke to extreme symptoms of vertigo. While the severity has fluctuated since then, it never goes away entirely. I assumed the problem was attributable to neck position/neck muscle tension. But testing showed damage to my left vestibular system. I didn't think of it until later, but now I'm wondering if the vibration plate might have contributed in a major way to the problem. I've not had any virus that could have set off an immune attack, and nothing else comes to mind. My use of the machine is still ongoing, albeit at low intensity. I'm told that there is no cure for the condition. I'm not seeing much evidence in the form of complaints from others who experienced similar symptoms, but there are casual mentions of it in passing. We need more studies with concise parameters. I may be an anomoly, but if these plates touting balance improvement can cause such paradoxical results even if rare- a warning to that effect is needed.
@@lindahusson4206 I'm not suggesting that this effect is 100% attributable to plate use. However, it is coincidental in that symptoms never presented prior to using the plate. They didn't come on immediately either, so there isn't proof that use of the machine is to blame. And I haven't abandoned use myself, continuing with daily sessions for 10-15 minutes each day upon waking. That said, I've reduced the intensity I was running the unit at, down 30-50% from full intensity. Subsequent to this, the dizzy spells are less frequent as well as being not as all- encompassing. Still, I am also doing vestibular therapy as well, and if that's working it might be what is helping. As to a dietary contribution to symptoms, I have been dairy free for over 50 years of my 71,, and gluten free for a decade. Bottom line, I'm keeping an eye on how this continues to unfold, as well as whether others report similar symptoms the seem to arise with plate. It may be that like many things, there are benefits but also potential unwanted side effects for some. As it is, I sometimes do vestibular exercises in conjunction with STANDING ON THE PLATE...so it might be both a cause and a therapeutic tool. More investigation will eventually tell us. Use of the plate with prescribed movements could be helping arthritis in my knees, and has helped the pain of massive rotator cuff tears in shoulders- so I don't want to give it up.
I agree with the person that made the comment about asking your doctor. Fir the most tgey haven't a clue unless they are someone who specializes in the bone field and is familiar with up to date devices and studies both new and old. Basically my family doctor and nurse practitioner will recommend that I take pharma meds and that will solve your problems for the most part. I would like to try this plate but would want to know for sure if it will stop any further bone loss and possibly strengthen the bones and muscles around it. I have pain everywhere and pretty much on a daily basis. I have moderate to high osteoporosis especially on ny left hip going down the thigh and lower leg is not good either. I would welcome any recommendations abd suggestions as to what i could try. I live in Canada and wonder if these discounts are applicable to Canadians.

I have a cheaper machine than these two. But i have been doing it for 20 to 30 minutes a day. No ill effects, just improved balance, better bladder control, muscle toning. I am a 76 yo female. Should i cut back to 10 minutes?

I also have a less expensive plate. I listened to Dr. Rubin’s lectures and he recommended more than one ten minute session, but allowing 3 hours between sessions. I personally use mine 3 times per day. The rest periods are intended to allow the muscles to recover from the stimulation at 30 HZ. I am having excellent results. I was told I had to have knee replacement surgery a year ago and I am now moving quite normally.
As a PT and knowing contraindications for use of ultrasound and e-stim in the presence of cancer, I was concerned about the use of vibration plates by patents that have or have had cancer. Since the vibration plate stimulates cells, what is the safety of this device in that patient population? I contacted Marodyne regarding this question as was told that there are no contraindications of any kind, including for cancer patients, with their device. What are your thoughts? I know many patients developed osteoporosis due to chemotherapy and other drugs used to treat cancer.
I knew someone who traveled the united states for about 20 years on a motorcycle. The vibration from the bike severely harmed his spine, so I'm skeptical about the safety of vibration plates.
That’s great, but what about less expensive devices? Not all of us can drop thousands of dollars out of pocket (and health insurance isn’t going to cover this).
I totally understand where you're coming from. In this video, I focused on reviewing the quality and effectiveness of the device rather than its price. I believe it’s important to assess how well something works first. That said, I’ll keep your feedback in mind for future reviews and will try to include options that are more budget-friendly. Thank you for bringing this up!
@@Dr_DougLucas Thanks! It turns out some of my local community center gyms have vibration plates. I hope there are more and larger studies for these devices, so that if they turn out to be as helpful for as many health issues as it seems, they’ll become more widely available and either more budget-friendly or at least partly covered by insurance.
Are you aware that there are whole-body vibration devices for livestock, especially horses? My horse trainer has one for her horses, both performance and non-performance. I believe the one she has in the barn is called "Thera-plate." Horses stand on it with all four feet. There are local area vibration products for horses as well, pads that can be placed on their backs or hindquarters. They're increasingly possible with trainers for increasing muscle strength, especially in horses that cannot be worked hard because of certain injuries. My trainer gets on it herself--and I have no idea what its frequency and displacement are...I've never been on it while it's working.
Many sub $400 vibration plates have lower amplitude (G force) settings. My lifepro has pulse and lateral (side to side) which are both lower impact. Pulse appears to be 1mm and up to 40 hz. Side to side appears to be 20 hz max with about 8mm movement but its side to side which obviously lower impact. Otherwise Fantastic review!!! Nice to see a more unbais review for a change.
Have you heard of the VT007 from Vibration Theraputics? It has two adjustable amplitude settings (0.7-1.2mm or 1.5-3mm) and is much cheaper than the two you review. The owner claims the Marodyne unit at 30 hz and 50‑200 micron amplitude would have G-force of 0.06-0.23G, not 0.4 and feels that at that low rate, there would be no muscle stimulation to speak of. I would be interested in your thoughts.

I have layed on a vibration plate without the teeter-totter with my head off back on, for years now. Unable to exercise or be upright much. 2016-2024 now. I had osteoporosis which I took vitamin shakes for magnesium and vitamin d. Diagnosed around 2006 I believe my osteoporosis was fixed by the time I got in the plates, but I wasn’t able to exercise like others, so this was devised for me to do. I also get seizures, and have a long term now intermittent cranial CSF leak. With complications of EDS and am structurally loose. I was able to gain strength and be upright longer periods of time from laying in the plate. In the beginning I would be having manual therapy while being in the plate by my physical therapist. My physical therapist would also go to my chiropractors office to calm my muscles after chiropractic adjustment, otherwise my correction would not hold very long. I eventually bought my preferred type of plate second hand prior to lockdown. This allows me to continue to maintain some strength despite no therapy work in person. This was all thought up by my physical therapist who specializes in the specific needs population.
Thank you and very interesting. I have been using Hypervibe vibration, yes expensive, however it has the 30 Hz and .3 g parameters I wanted. By the time I am due for my next DEXA I will be over the 7000 minutes (10 minutes per day) as well as doing resistance training, nutrition, etc. Hopeful there will be some improvement.
Yes, 7000 minutes total. But, only 10 minutes per day that showed an improvement in lumbar spine of post menopausal women. 30 Hz low magnitude of .3g I am praying and hoping for an improvement. @@jacquesmertens3369

I am surprised that with all of your research you don’t seem to realize that a dexascan is a poor way to measure bone health-a Deoxypyridinoline urine test measuring bone reabsorption or a pyridinium test would be better. A dexascan only measure’s density and 65% of fractures were in the dexascan dense bone reading. The remineralizing med Bisphosponate, which has been prescribed actually makes bones brittle. A proper way to measure bone health should be included in a proper study. I am still interested in the bone vibration devise, please find a study using better bone health measurements?
Thank you so much for this. As a career scientist (post-career), I very much appreciate the thoughtful weighing of different sides. I appreciate your interpretation of so many studies, including your explanation about how lower priced plates function. I have a lifepro 4D machine and their literature is limited with regard to which settings offer optimal Hz, amplitude and G force so I had a a mathematician help me figure out which settings would get me close to the 2G measurement. I’m assuming these other products haven’t conducted any studies or you would report on them. It is frustrating that all the studies are conducted on such expensive devices. It doesn’t help mainstream users who don’t want to spend thousands, especially when the results seem to be controversial. I’m hoping my LifePro machine is going to be beneficial and would love to get some kind of info on their efficacy in reversing osteoporosis.
The measurement of G on a plate does not have to be exactly the same that is applied to the feet and further bones. Maybe we should do 2 tests. One phone held firmy against the plate and the other lower parts of legs. I presume measurement on the leg could be slightly lower compared to the bone but still would be nice to see those measurements. As for mathematical computation we would need to assume how the movement is made. So maybe simpler to measure with the phone. Also very disapointing we do not have studies on a device more similar to walking acceleration like 1.2G
I just used 'Accelerometer Counter' on android but I suppose you can find others. Gray out all measurements except Z and hold phone flat against surface of plate. You can clear the graph and start measure when needed.@@ellyndooley893

19:26 I would like to know if I should use one of the two products you covered in your talk. Would vibration help heal my 3 compression fractures in my lumbar spine? My 3 Dexa scans say I have OSTEOPENIA, but my PCP has me on the drug Alendronate Sodium (been a little over 3 years). The bone surgeon wouldn't do any surgery because I am too weak (he wanted to put in a rod, screws and brackets). My fall on my butt in 2020 ended up sending me for a MRI, which discovered my OSTEOPENIA. And I hadn't had my height checked for years, even though my slacks were dragging, and low and behold I had lost 4" in height. I'm not exactly sure what these vibration products are for, so wiill one of these vibration units help my fractures? Or at least keep my OSTEOPENIA from developing into osteoporosis? Or should I stop seeing my PCP, since the drug is for osteoporosis? HELP!!!!

Where is the discount link for the Merodyne? Please post. The 2009 study on low-intensity vibration used HALF the G's used by the Marodyne device-- even so it DID build bone in THOSE WHO COMPLIED with the (rather easy) protocol. The studies on high- intensity vibration were all over the map (e.g., using supervised exercise, etcetera).
Maybe this is an irrelevant comment, but I had a Lifepro Waver plate that I liked very much. I decided to go all out and order a high-end vibration plate. Much fancier, but it emitted such a high-pitched whine that I found it simply unbearable. I probably lasted for less than a minute on it. The return/restocking fee cost me more than the Waver had! I recommend figuring out how to try before you buy.
I'm curious as to who decided that 30 hz was ideal. It seems just to be what someone theorized, so then became the standard. 30 hz can be pretty vigorous on many machines.

Darlene: I’m also very curious about your question! Not sure if you would post answer here. I am thinking of joining health span nation once things settle down for me this summer. I kind of think the power plate is the way to go….but agree it’s so darn expensive….I was looking at the VT007 by Vibration Therapeutic. It’s much less expensive and their website is very informative. There is more information on that website than I’ve found anywhere else (the science of WBV, research and comparisons of other devices, plus you can ask questions and they get right back with an answer. I just don’t know if their plate is quality. It looks good on paper (vertical vibration and lowest amp is @1). As I recall it has a substantial warranty and a 90 day free return policy. It is made in China which is why developer claims it is less expensive; but then my guess is that most of these devices if not made in China have components from China. Anyway, I do want to purchase a WBV plate and wish there were better studies showing the benefit of higher than Marodyne’s amplitude/g force for Osteoporosis. The Marodyne seems too low but gets approved because it couldn’t not be safe…. My thoughts.
If I. An get more info I’ll post here. Still waiting to see how I can get Dr Doug’s thoughts - Subscribed but not seeing how or where to ask my question. I’m wanting a vibration plate for much more than bone health. Lymphatic and also neuromuscular communication. Hard to explain here what I mean.

Thank you for a great review. Wish I would have heard it before I bought my maradyne a couple of years ago. I bought my power plate in 2003 and I've never had any detrimental health problems because of it. Repairs in that amount of time have been minimal and the customer service wonderful.

Please take your time to read my paper I ended up having to do out of frustration to help clear up the replication crisis , plus bring safety issues and bio-mechanics into their criteria for research. .
rdcu.be/c9RJE
Please note: We focused on CP because that CP groups globally are targeted by many marketers anyway, and with the VT community, one company was skewing data and NOT filing incidence reports during research, etc..... while emotionally blackmailing parents into buying a machine the same price as a small car, that was never ergonomically designed for anyone with a mobility issue. ( hence the research and results stalled 20 years ago ) They now sell using fear or a "promise" they can never keep.
I hope one day to hear from you.
Kind regards Lloyd Shaw

Sounds like you should find a new doctor. Congrats on fixing yourself
Thank you, I greatly appreciate your support. Very glad to hear you enjoyed this video!
You say ask your doctor. I did and they said no. Most traditional doctors are not willing to think outside the box so don’t bother asking them about new approaches.

I use it anyway and it's helping. I don't think they are dangerous. I even have a rod in my hip from broken hip. No problem.
Exactly 🙄.

Thank you for sharing. I am glad this video was helpful!
Thanks Dr. Doug for an excellent series and superb analysis. It definitely prompted me to subscribe to your podcast. A year ago, I called LifePro, gave them Marodyne’s specs. The HZ setting was straightforward and they recommended the second setting, which is the up and down vibration. Been using it since.
Thank you for sharing this! I greatly appreciate your support
The second setting refers to linear vibration .. the rumblex offers different sorts of vibration.
Thank you for all the information. For me I think I will pass. I'm 76 years standing on a vibration device is a No....but I wish everyone much success in using the device.

You can sit down and still gain the benefits. But suit yourself.
I am 75 and stand on my Powerplate easily. Highly recommend it
I'm 76 on 2016 I was told I had osteoporosis I took ostera metagenics after a year my hip went to osteopania.

Thank you for sharing this!
I like your style. 😂
I can't tell if you're being facetious or not. You sounded 100% serious until you talked about flying to other planets.
I appreciate your humor as it keeps us, “grounded.”
Your comment about starting slow and then increasing gradually is sound wisdom on any venture we start out on especially for seniors to remind us, that we no longer have bodies that we can use, abuse and rebound quickly.
The only thing I’ll add to that principle is that when starting out on any behavioral change, there must be enough of a demand that you feel some level of irritation. If it’s too easy, “it ain’t a thing and don’t count.” Once you’ve adapted to the demand is the time to up the ante.
Well said, thank you for sharing this! @@nancyboyette3748
This is great information, thank you so much for sharing this!

What is your opinion on heel drops or bouncing on your heels to vibrate your bones for bone density? There are a couple of osteoporosis PT's on UA-cam who recommend doing 30-50 a day, spaced out 10 at a time ....
I will have to look further into this!
I’m interested in heel drops too
I've been doing some of those too, not really knowing how effective they might be.

I agree. Doctors know nothing about these plates.

Thank you for this insight! I am glad you enjoyed this video.

I’m curious if you were able to come to a conclusion on this?
I bought the VT007 and found it gave me headaches, it was too powerful for me. I returned it. 😢

Thank you. I have wondered about those devices. Now I know more.
Yes! Glad you enjoyed this video
Really appreciate your carefully considered, balanced reviews. This is great information. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this!

Yes, it is necessary to bend your knees slightly.

I am very sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing this!
Vitamin D3 K2 cured my Vertigo.
Maybe it has nothing to do with the plate? I got vertigo very badly and found out it was caused from dairy! I stopped dairy and vertigo is gone.
I would welcome any recommendations abd suggestions as to what i could try.

They are the specialist and know best, I also recommend advising with your personal doctor as well on it!

Thank you so very much for helping me consider whole body vibration.
Happy to help!

You mean 7000 minutes I suppose. Is that a threshold or a maximum that was mentioned in the video? Have I missed it?

@@b9eda9ad not sure what feature on my phone would measure G… can you explain?
I just used 'Accelerometer Counter' on android but I suppose you can find others. Gray out all measurements except Z and hold phone flat against surface of plate. You can clear the graph and start measure when needed.@@ellyndooley893

My 3 Dexa scans say I have OSTEOPENIA, but my PCP has me on the drug Alendronate Sodium (been a little over 3 years). The bone surgeon wouldn't do any surgery because I am too weak (he wanted to put in a rod, screws and brackets).
