Using braces can help children give more support on walking, especially for those on the autism spectrum. Toe-walking is when children walk on their toes, with their heels off the ground. 🚶🏻♀️
Not just children. I’m in my late 40s and I still tend to toe walk.
No one stopped me from toe walking, so now I can no longer walk heal to toe. I believe that early intervention is a good thing, so that way theres no permanent deformity.
Nice to see Simon progressing really well .My son is 2.5 and also mild autistic no speech yet only few words. When did Simon started saying functional words and when he developed receptive language?
He really never talk to us when he was two years old. We started doing Speech Therapy with him when he was almost 3, and that has helped the most. He has learned how to speak quite well just in the past past five or six months. Receptive language took a lot longer. He has only recently said things like please and thank you just these past two months.

@@7AheadfamilyI noticed that some of Simon’s first functional words were “pee-pee”, “poo-poo”, and “potty”. I also learned the word “lap” fairly early (and fairly easily). You could also try teaching Ezra the words “pee” and “poo”.
If you can’t get Ezra to say these words you might try other words like “tinkle” (for urination) “jobbie” (for defecation) and “puke” (for vomiting).
My mother had some success with all of the words above with both my sister and myself. If we stopped responding to one word for something she would teach us a different (but still simple) word for that thing.
You could also try to find some simple functional words that are similar to sounds that Ezra is already making. Maybe his speech therapist or one of his doctors (or someone at his school) might have some ideas on this.
Simon did such a good job helping with the eggs and he’s doing great at answering questions! My niece is going to see a specialist soon for braces for toe walking too so I think for some kids they’re needed

I think braces can be a really good idea, they can subconsciously 'remind' the person to walk properly. I like seeing him get more involved in things happening around him.

They also make shoes where the heels squeak when the child walks more "normal." Apparently it sounds like a dog chew toy...so...maybe he could wear the shoes at school/indoors and the braces for family hikes. You can't have him chased down by wild dogs of course, lol.

OK, this seems kind of strange. Why would he need braces if he can walk perfectly well generally I think braces are used unless you break your foot or something

Simon is progressing so good! Love seeing the growth! Due to a broken leg I'm also currently seeing an orthodontist. I toe walk often too but due to being very active (when not injured) that has prevented the toe walking causing issues.

Thank you for this adorable video! I was having a rough day and this made me smile all the way through. Benefits aside, I like that Simon gets to have braces with cars on them, how cool is that?! We all know how much he loves those😄 It's amazing to see how independent he's already becoming in many different areas. Just goes to show how big a difference an early diagnosis, intervention and appropriate support can make! I know he's Level 1 Autism but even for that, these are huge steps he's making. Keep going, keep on growing, little guy! I'm sure you hear this a lot, but this can never be said too many times: You're doing an amazing job, you should be proud of yourselves. Wow, is it me or is Ezra in the same kitchen where Simons eggs had just been cooked...... Amazing. I remember him having to eat out on the deck or in another room because of his sensory overload towards certain smells.....
You are right! We’ve discovered that if we have Ezra there in the kitchen when we start cooking the eggs then it’s better. If we have cooked the eggs before he walks in then he has a harder time with the smell.

Simon started making conversation when he was three years old. He could say quite a few words when he was two years old, but he wouldn’t use them to communicate. He only started communicating with us after Speech Therapy.
I think I was as old as seven or eight (first or second grade) when I learned to say “thank you” and I still often needed to be reminded at least through grade school (fifth grade, age eleven).

7 ahead - it’s easier to be diagnosed with autism if your on the severe end of the spectrum ( Example : Ezra ) than to be diagnosed with level 1 ASD later in your teens or adulthood
When I was growing up I was level two by today’s standards (more severe than Simon, but less severe than Ezra) and I was diagnosed just after my two year checkup. This was back in the late 1970s.
My vocabulary was limited at that point (The only words I was saying around age two were “cat”, “clock”, and “moon”. You can’t communicate with just those words). Also, due to a right hemisphere stroke at birth my symptoms were more evident than they would be otherwise. That’s probably why I was diagnosed for the first time as early as I was.
Due to my diagnosis I was able to get into special education at age six (there were both pluses and minuses to this) but due to my parents and other relatives being skeptical of my diagnosis I was expected to understand more about social interaction at home and at family gatherings (for example) than I actually did. Also, back in the 1970s, 1980s, and even 1990s adults (including doctors) didn’t know what sensory meltdowns and panic attacks were. Therefore back then they were viewed as temper tantrums and punished accordingly. These days there is a bit more understanding about the distinction (relatively speaking).
@@thomasschoeck9080 I’m still on the waiting list to be assessed . To be honest I feel like my parents should’ve got me to be testing on autism and gave me the right support earlier before my teen years . I’ve struggled with family conflicts , arguments , school toxic social environments & other negative things corrupting my life . I feel more peaceful & at home around the special need kids than the normal ones who are downright menaces anyways .
Simon is so polite and I'm glad to see him progressing with his communication and doing things himself like buckling his seatbelt. And I, like others, had noticed that Ezra seemed to do better despite the egg smell. It's interesting that he does better when he's there when you start cooking. It'd be nice if that worked with all olfactory sensitivity!
And I hope you find it helpful, not annoying or needlessly pedantic, but "get's" should say "Gets" with a capital and no apostrophe.

I’m not an expert, but conversationally I noticed Ezra almost threw up after eating cereal with milk. Have you gotten him dietary allergy tested? There are strong links between G.I. Tract issues and Autism.. and professionally adjusted diets have seen a lot of success in improving autism (keto or carnivore etc.) symptoms. Maybe he is not able to digest the milk or maybe he has gluten sensitivity issues with the cereal…(or something in the cereal because a lot of wheat is sprayed with chemicals in the fields.) 😅 again, i only know about this stuff because of ADHD. So i’m approaching it conversationally
This is definitely possible and he should certainly be tested.
However, when I was born they thought that I was allergic to milk and put me on soy formula because I would not be able to keep the regular formula down. It turns out that in actuality I do not have a milk allergy.
I do notice if milk is becoming sour earlier than most people. My sister (who is also on the spectrum) and my father (who has never been tested but has a distant relative on his side of the family with a confirmed autism diagnosis) can also do this.
This bottom line is that Ezra’s symptoms can be caused by at least one of three things. First, he may have a milk allergy (or possibly lactose intolerance). Second, he may have difficulty drinking milk due to sensory sensitivities. Third, he might be gagging as a result of eating too fast. I am well into my 40s and the last two issues sometimes affect my eating.
It doesn’t look like Simon was quite as nervous as last time. For example, he didn’t say “No Owie!” this time. When I was his age (or even four or five years older) I was always nervous that they would give me a booster shot and that it would hurt.
Yes! He was a lot more confident and happy. It went well.
I just watched the new episode of Cocomelon Lane about the doctor’s checkup.
In that episode JJ notices that he is getting taller. He says that he doesn’t remember his last checkup because he was a baby last time. This causes him to be nervous at first. This tells me that JJ is either three or four years old in the new series.
I wonder if Simon remembers doctor’s visits before this one. I remember some doctor’s visits going all the way back to age two (although my memories from age three on are a bit more clear).
On the other hand, my sister (who is also on the spectrum) doesn’t remember anything clearly before about age seven or eight (at the earliest). This shows that even with people on the spectrum the age at which long-term memory formation begins can vary. My sister’s memory begins much later than mine, but on the other hand she remembers the specific dates when events happened and I usually don’t. Therefore her memory is better than mine in some areas but not others.

My brother has autism and is a very severe toe walker and has needed surgery in the past we have tried braces and those don't work and he still toe walks I hope that never happens to simon

Catie, we try our best to keep our house clean, but with 5 kids and both parents working, the house can get dirty again very quickly. We actually clean the kitchen every night before bed. Our van looks very clean right now, actually, since we just cleaned it. Do you have anything positive to say about this video? Did you enjoy watching Ezra and Simon go skiing for the first time? I thought you may like that video.
I'm hauling your son is doing great You know your son looks good and I used to wear braces in my legs before so I understand how that feels and I think he doesn't I think your son does not need the braces for his heels to get on the ground you know you know it's just a work in process but other than that he didn't very good I'm getting his braces but for me I don't think she needs the braces because his heels looked on the ground very clear both of them Good job only of taking good care of your child a holly if you have any questions get back to me as soon as possible please and you're a good parent

I just did some searches in Bing using GPT-4 with the Balanced setting and it looks like most kids don’t notice their feet getting bigger until they are six years old (or even slightly older). Therefore it would seem that it’s not that unusual for Simon to not understand yet that he’s becoming a big kid. It also looks like even though I was level two growing up that my understanding of this was also technically just within the norm. When my mother told me at age five that my feet were getting bigger my reaction (as I recall) was fairly similar to Simon’s in this video. My parents thought it was unusual that I didn’t understand this yet. It looks like around 1980 parents often assumed that kids understood this at least a few years earlier than they actually did. I’m guessing that this wasn’t studied yet.
It looks like the writers for shows like Caillou (which used to be on PBS) and Ben 10 (which aired on Cartoon Network originally) got this wrong. For example in real life if there actually was a Fountain of Youth Ben probably wouldn’t have noticed that he was smaller after apparently drinking from the Fountain of Youth and going from ten years old to around four years old (Simon’s current age) in the episode “Don’t Drink the Water”.
It looks like if Simon’s social and communication skills continue to progress and his toilet training remains at least fairly on track (many kids, including some neurotypical ones have some regression in this area between age four and six and they are still able to attend Kindergarten at the age of either five or six) he should be ready for Kindergarten either this Fall or the following one without too much difficulty. You might have some choice on this based on when his birthday falls.

I can't judge if he still needs braces or not. I can only talk about my experience. I never had braces (wasn't diagnosed with anything until 18 for a variety of reasons) but, now, I have orthopedic soles/inserts for my shoes and I have to have shoes that support my ankles. This stems from other things going on (flat feet and feet turning slightly inwards) but, I do find that it helps me a lot if I have ankle supporting shoes that are tighter around my ankles. I've found that it helps me to know where my feet are and has reduced the amount of times I trip over my own feet. I don't why that is, I just know that, before getting my inserts, I always tripped less in my steel cap work boots and in my running shoes. The inserts have made my tripping so much better no matter the shoe (assuming that all of my current shoes match certain rules set by my foot specialist).

It looks like it’s true that Simon is intellectually pretty much on target for someone his age.
On the PBS series Caillou (available on at least one online streaming service) Caillou is typically around Simon’s current age (depending on the episode) and he also helps out with chores and usually wants to do things for himself. One thing to note, though, is that Caillou can be a bit whiny in some episodes (especially in the first two or three seasons) and some parents have noticed that it can rub off on younger viewers.
That being said limited viewing of that series with parental supervision might have some benefits in terms of intellectual and social development as long as a parent is able to point out what Caillou is doing wrong in some episodes. On the subject of selective viewing of that series certain episodes (like “Caillou Joins the Circus”) should probably be skipped entirely. In that episode Caillou throws a temper tantrum because he finds out that he is not going to the circus today. In that episode Caillou’s behavior is an example of what not to do (to put it mildly). And even worse Caillou (who is completely neurotypical, according to the writers) experiences no consequences of any kind for his misbehavior in that episode.

My left foot is bigger than my right foot. It’s a difference of between half a shoe size and almost a whole shoe size. This makes it very difficult to find shoes (or even sneakers) that fit me properly. I find that Sketchers fit well. Also, sometimes a Nike or New Balance sneaker will fit, but even then most of them don’t.

The braces probably are important. I often toe walked even in college and the second toe on my right foot has a bit of a curve to it. I can also see this on my left foot but not as noticeably. A few doctors have told me that toe walking might cause this.
Fortunately my foot symptoms are mild. I sometimes feel pain in my heels or toes but nothing that a warm bath, a gel insole, or some over the counter pain relievers can’t deal with. It’s my understanding, though, that most toe walkers have more symptoms than I do. When I was growing up foot braces were never presented as an option (if they existed yet).

I have a question what is a toe walker? because i also have autism i sometimes have trouble understanding a few things.
Some autistic, and some not autistic children walk on their toes, holding their heels up. Some outgrow it as they get heavier. It can cause problems later. I am 65, and still sometimes toe walk, but I never did it enough to worry anyone. Instead, people worried, "why won't he keep his shoes on?"👣
It’s good that he’s now saying “car” instead of “car car”. He also seems to be using more phrases now and some sentences.

I only understood that my feet were growing when my parents explained it to me at age five on a trip to a shoe store. That was when it was explained to me why I needed new shoes.

Your right it isn't hurting anyone else, but it would hurt him as he gets older. Over time, habitual toe walking places abnormal stress on the bones and ligaments in the feet, knees, and lower back which can deform bones and stretch ligaments, causing joint pain, impaired function, knee instability, arthritis, and increased risk of injury.
