How to fit a toilet flush valve & fill valve. Fluidmaster dual flush install. Leaking flush fix!

- In this video I show how to fix a leaky toilet flush by replacing a flush valve and a fill valve. In this example we use a cable flush valve but the general principle is the same for other flush valves. You don't always have to replace both valves but this video covers both anyway.

Wow, how very kind of you. Glad you found the video useful 👍
You’ve just helped me do this with my toilet that was leaking and overflowing. Thank you for making a very straightforward and to-the-point tutorial of how to get this done. 👍🏻
Glad to help 👍
Absolutely brilliant! I can’t thank you enough! The removal of the old flush valve and installing the new one was very straightforward thanks to your narration and demonstration. 💪🏼👍🏼
You're welcome!
Great video Gareth. Fitted my Fluidmaster flush and inlet valves today, following your tutorial. It went amazingly smoothly and I’m rather proud to have done it myself. Thank you
Great work, thanks for watching 👍👍
Thanks for explaining two sizes of threaded outlets...I bought the same kit you used to demonstrate and it wasn't like any I've fitted before so I assumed I'd bout an incompatible kit, you saved me more money and a trip to B&Q! Thanks again 👍
Glad it helped you out, thanks for the feedback 👍
Always the best DIY videos, plenty of easy explanations and tips too, cheers!
Thanks for the feedback 👍
Thanks for the video, Gareth. And good luck with your boys in the World Cup in November!
😂
Many thanks. Excellent, clear and precise instructions. I am a one woman over sixty DIYer. I managed to successfully install both parts of the cistern following your instructions. Many thanks again
No problem and thanks for the tip!
Great video mate, really de-mystifies it and makes it simple and clear.
Glad you found it useful.
THANK YOU!!! The original paper instructions were awful. I ended up flooding the floor. I was exhausted and then saw your 'How to" and it all made sense. I bought a new cistern washer as you suggested and some new screws to bolt it back down.
Wish i'd found your video first! I also removed the chrome sleeve from the flusher switch and it fits nice and snug.
Glad the vid helped. Hope its all still holding up!
OK you actually just saved me!!! All day I've been trying to install this exact one and it kept leaking when I flushed, watched loads of videos and still couldn't figure it out but you gave me the answer!! Instant subscribe because you're my hero 🤣 thank youuuu
Glad to help!
You saved my life on the bit from 7:40 to 7:50. Thank you 👍
Glad to have helped!
Thanks very much for this. Very very helpful talk through like for a non expert like me. Was able to fix broken flush myself during lockdown.
Glad it helped!
This is the second one for the basement bat. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOuLt8IL_GxhhaK8DBuKEL-zV0UJVpWZn , works great
Tidy work pal. Very handy, seen a few of you're vids and it's been helpful
Glad to help. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Great video. Was putting this job off for ages. Did it today followed this vid and all went well and no leaks yet!! Cheers👍
Great to hear!
As always you so quick for explaining the stuff matters appreciate your time my friend 🙏🏻 god bless
Glad to help!
Great video - clear, well explained and good additional advice. Many thanks
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great vid, very well explained, step by step. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you, your video was incredibly helpful. I'm definitely subscribing.
Glad to help
Excellent video. Everything explained very clearly and not assuming you know stuff
Glad it was helpful!
Note: The button on yours is standing out from the lid, the sides of the button can actually be removed so you can have it sitting flush (forgive the pun) with the lid instead of sticking out like it does when you finish the job.
Thanks for the rest of the video though. Going to put this to use tomorrow once I have some new screws for re-attaching the cistern to the wall again afterwards. Mine are rusted right up!
Nice one mate I was going to say I like it other then the fact that the button wasn't flush. I was going to ask if there is a way to make it flush and not sticking out like that, you answered that for me nice one 👍
How would you make it flush from the way he has done it, is it just removing the silver thing inbetween
Thanks
@@muneebhassan5415 Yes.
Thank you for a very useful tutorial One point relevant to our particular make of toilet was that it was impossible to disconnect the water supply as shown in the video. After a number of attempts I realised that the only way to disconnect (after turning the water off) was to partially remove the cistern and lean it forward and then pull the flexible pipe through a couple of inches which then enabled us to disconnect the water supply. Only then did we observe a valve on the flexible pipe something that could not previously be seen. Once we overcame that problem it was as per your video although because of the initial problem my wife had to assist. But very helpful overall.
Sounds like a slightly impractical installation in the first place! Glad it worked out for you and thanks for watching!
Such a great video, really informative and helped me as a total beginner to fix my leaky toilet ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Just want to say your video is brilliant! Everything is really well explained and shown clearly on camera to guide me. It’s been difficult finding the right video, but this was perfect! Thank you for helping me save money do this job myself rather than hire someone, and learn something at the same time.
Will definitely be checking out your other videos in replacing the shower tray, filing etc. Thanks bud! Liked video and subscribed!
Glad to have helped. Best of luck with the projects that now lie ahead!
Thank you. Appreciated your advice and help.
Glad to help
Very good easy to understand video Pouse, some good tips ref the large rubber washer reolacement too - good work fella
Thanks 👍
Very helpful video. Cheers 😎
No problem, thanks for watching.
Really useful video for changing flush and fill valves. Cheers! One my bolts was completely rusted so had to hacksaw through to separate cistern from the pan. If bolts look corroded I'd recommend buying new ones along with the new coupling washer before starting to take things apart as both parts are cheap anyway.
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
I fitted a similar one today but I used both the black rubbers on mine, I didn't realise you had 2 and you could chose but no leaks and no problems with it.... Good video
Good work! Sometimes you just have to improvise! Thanks for watching.
Great helpful video, thanks for that
Glad to help....sorry for late reply!
Good video - I will add a small point which is only cosmetic - you can remove the push button collar so the button sits flush. 13:26
Indeed you can. Thanks for pointing out and thanks for watching.
I really don't have any DIY skills. Followed your video and I'm pleased to say it went like a dream. Only sticking point was reconnecting to the water, it kept leaking until I tightened it really hard. Thanks
Great work!
Fantastic video, thank you!!
No problem 👍
Great video. Many thanks 😂
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent video very helpful well done
Thanks for the feedback, best of luck with your flush install!
Great video bro ! 👍
Thank you.
Thanks for the tutorial, I have the same issues, I replaced the fill valve ok but in doing so made the flush valve leak slightly into the pan, a constant trickle. I bought the same unit you showed and tried several plumbers to come do the job but without success. The removal of the cistern to fit the new unit concerned me but I'm confident I will be able to do the job myself thanks to you.
Glad it helped, best of luck 👍
You have saved me going mad cause the plastic part under my flush came off when putting in some cleaning products.i kept trying to put on by pushing the plastic slide in not out.thanjs for help so much feel a bit of a pratt but I'm a welder not a plumber.thank you again 👍👍
No problem!
Great video good dummies guide to confident swap out 👌🏼
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.

Great upload thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Well I'm pleased my toilet isn't leaking anymore so thanks!
Thanks. Bought the same part so this video came in handy. Still leaked between the cistern and toilet basin though so I ended up using the original washers and its now watertight. Not sure why but it works.
Nice work!
enjoyed the video
Thanks!
Very good video pouse.
Watched for leisure as I know how to do mine as well.
One thing I will say is the minute my fill valve packs up I will be replacing it a metal threaded one. I really don't like the plastic threaded mine came with (included with the toilet from B&Q).
Cheers for the upload, thumbs up.
Watched for leisure? You need to get a new hobby! Thanks for watching and best of luck.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Just bored on lunch break at work hahaha poor use choice of words. Thoughts on the plastic threaded valves on these though??
best instructions out there, subscribed
Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for the kind words.
Nicely done.
Thanks
Great video mate thanks a lot... wish me luck!
Hope it went well!
I would always use a fill valve with brass threads, as I'm not a fan of plastic, great video 👍.
Thanks for the advice 👍
Fantastic, wondered what the second seal in the box was for. The hole in the tank is bigger than the nut on the flush valve as per your video, was going to take it back however i get what its for now. Cheers
No problem, glad it all made sense. Plumbing is never straight forward!
Thanks for the syphon change! How about changing cris-cross handle of the wash basin and the bath? Its that type of tap that doesn't have any tiny holes where you can turn. How do I remove the cold and the hot knob? It's continually dribbling I think the screw is worn out because i can't turn it off. I also can't find a copper screw for the taps.
Thanks mate. Superb video. Caaaardiff lad?
Close! Thanks for watching.
Cracking T-shirt you're sporting there Pouse! 😉
I love an old stag do t-shirt, puts me in holiday mode!
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE i bought this syphon and wondered why it wasnt working the push button housing with the slider wasn't on it and just wouldn't stay on so I assume it was faulty is this common? Thanks... great video btw mate
@@garylawton7254 sounds like it. I've only ever fitted one of this particular kit. Hope it worked out for you. Thanks for watching.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE seen two videos on this now and both had the latch thing on them that secures it in place one i bought from Screwfix hasn't??? Lol bloody thing must be faulty. Can you usually change the syphon in situ ie it twists out or gotta take cistern off and replace entire syphon? Cheers mate
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE do they twist off to repair do you know mate?
GOOD vid
Glad you enjoyed it.
I’ve just replaced mine with the same kit only difference is I removed the extra chrome round the button so it was more flush with the lid.
I did that on my old set up. Thanks for watching!
Same here :)
This is just so brilliant, thanks. Was nervous about updating my old cistern, now I'm confident to do the job. Just one point. My cistern currently has an overflow, with an exit at the bottom. I will need to blank this off, what shall I use? Cheers.
You just want something like this - amzn.to/3CjOdGN. Just make sure it's the right size before you buy it. You may get it cheaper somewhere like Screwfix or tool station. Best of luck!
Legend
Not sure about legend but glad it helped. Thanks again for watching.
Your video instructions are great. I had someone fit a new fluidmaster flush valve, but there are leaks from both wing nuts to the cistern and the seat wing nuts. Can you give some advice on what to do please to stop the leaks. Thanks
Glad it helped. You need to have rubber seals inside the cistern under your nut heads to create a water tight seal?
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Thank you for your advice.
Great video. Attempting this today. I did notice when looking at the bits that the flush button does unscrew at the top, is this so it can be flush with the top of the cistern and not so stuck out?
Yes you can put it flush with the top of the toilet. Best of luck.
Fab!
Thanks!
I’ve replaced my fill valve, flush valve and coupling washer today but still water leaks from the cistern into the pan....whhhyyy? Any ideas pal?
I had similar problem. Water leaked out the back of join between the cistern and the basin. Ended up using the old toilet washer and thinner gasket from the original flush valve. Had to ignore the advice of fitting new washers but now its watertight again.
my cystern has all the flush mechanism in a single column, ie there is no pipe to a button. It is broken. Can I substitute it with one as in your video? Are all the holes in cystern covers the same size for these buttons? Thanks.
Thank you! Came here to find out which way up the adapter washer goes as the instructions with the valve just say "facing down". Not helpful.
Pouse 1 : 0 Fluidmaster
Great video, thank you.
One small point, I don’t understand why people pipe directly to the inlet, it’s much easier to use flexi hose, looks better and easier to maintain, just my two pennies worth.
My pipe being plastic is easy enough to 'flex' into position, but I completely agree. They've used flexi for years in Europe and like you I think it looks good and is a lot more practical when replacing toilets. Thanks for the feedback Erhan.
Good tip Always Always instal high quality isolation valves the cheap ones always fail after ten years guaranteed
Thanks for the feedback.
Great video. I thought I could use Fluidmaster when I watched this video. However, turns out Fluidmaster only provides adaptor to fit 2.25" hole in the bottom of cistern. If the receiving end is not a pan, but a 2" flush pipe. There is no adaptor for joining the 1.5" outlet to 2" flush pipe.
Does the hex shape in the cistern coupling washer not need to be aligned to the Hex on the cistern before seating it down? Or does it not make much difference
It fitted tight on my old flush valve, but to be honest if it creates a seal with the toilet pan then it doesn't really matter. You could also use a donut washer. Thanks for watching.
hi great vid. any links to those water pump pliers please? Many thanks
No links sorry, but they are just budget pliers. Thanks for watching.
Hi. Thanks for the video. I have an issue with trying to fit the new flush valve. My new fluidmaster states it is for 1.5" - 2" and my cistern outlet is 2.5"! The protruding lip of the adapter washer comfortably goes right through the cistern outlet hole rather than sitting on it as in your video. I can't seem to find any advice online for this, nor can I find a flush valve for a 2.5" outlet.
The old flush valve was also a fluid master of the same size but the whole connection seemed to have been flooded with sealant to make it fit! Any advice? Thanks.
If you look carefully mine has a gap around it as well. As long as the washer is sat firmly on the ceramic inside the cistern then it should create a seal then the lip of the washer (if centralised within the hole) will direct the water down the pipe rather than it try to creep under the rubber in the adapter washer. So I think you should be ok. You can add plumbers mate if you're in doubt and this will give you piece of mind but you probably don't need it. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Good safety boots lol
Keeping cool is very important!
Can you use this to replace ideal standard flash valve
It needs to be compatible with the water tank on your toilet. Check the hole sizes and if they're the same then it should work. Best of luck with it.
What you have in that toilet is The old jolly flush valve there crap. I suspect it was refilling because it was leaking slightly through where the rubber hits the cradle. That squeak was because there was no pressure reducing bit in the feed. They look like little bits of pasta with a filter on a jolly flush.
Fluid master are quite simply the best, Never the less you can always just change it from the top if your not confident in taking the whole toilet apart.(the new type isn’t that bad)
Can I ask a question while I’m here do you have a vid on Steel spans for floor joists. 👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback. I don't have a vid for steels sorry. Thanks for watching!
When you are removing the fill valve after isolating the supply, you say you turn a nut anti clockwise to remove the pipe from the system.I am sure you are turning it clockwise.
What's the tool called you're using at 9:56 and what jaw opening size does it need to grip that locknut?
Here's the link - amzn.to/3p2pKhI. All links to tools are in the video description. Hope that helps. 👍
Hi, please can I ask a question. Earlier this year I fitted the exact same Fluidmaster kit as you did in this video. I'm a competent DIY'er and therefore I had no issues with the fitting. The problem I have is when I use the half flush (short flush) there is a very loud bang as the flush stops. I know the noise is not coming from the inlet pipe moving, it's definitely coming from the flush valve. I've experimented with different fill levels but nothing stops the annoying bang. Any help and guidance you could offer to stop this issue would be gratefully received. Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Thanks :-)
Not sure sorry. Have you tried flushing with the lid off the cistern so you can see where it's coming from?
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Thanks for the reply. Yeah I've tried looking at it with the lid off and it's definitely coming from the sIphon (flush). As the short flush shuts off it does it with a severe bang. It's got to the point where I'm thinking of sacking the Fluidmaster fitting and fitting an alternative. Thanks for your response and keep up the good work with your videos. Thanks to your videos I have been inspired to have a go at several projects that I was wary of attempting before (esp plastering). Thanks
@@smeggingqueeg500 have you tried replacing the top half where you adjust the flush ? These simply spin off and can be replaced I'd imagine there pretty cheap
@@briarios666 thanks for the suggestion mate but I've given up with it completely now cos of the constant banging. I went for a cheaper model and it's been fine. Thanks anyway 😃
@@markbainbridge1767 tbh I'd do the same lol I gave up with the push button as the pipe where the water flushes away is to far into our cistern so the push button system doesn't work properly literally just went out for the old style handle now fixed 😀
❤
Nice one butt! 👍
No problem!
Can this type of flush valve be taken out for clean/service/repair without dismantling the toilet?
Yes it just twists out for a replacement flush valve, no more taking it off the wall
As Charles said, it can be removed without removing the toilet. Obviously the seal between the pan and water tank requires the toilet to come apart if it ever goes but that's unlikely to need replacing in a hurry.
@@Charles61284 Thanks guys. I installed one of these a year or so ago and it's been fine until recently, when the flush stopped re-sealing and just kept losing water. The handle had become floppy and would droop down, only allow the proper cycle if you manually adjust to horizontal. Anyway, heartened by your comments I've bought an identical spare so I can swop it round and see what's what.
why do so many people use wrenches and pliers backwards
What's the name of the tool you're using at 6:54? I need one of those.
It's a wide jaw pliers, link to product here - amzn.to/3p2pKhI. I've just added a list of all tools and weblinks in the description section below the video which you my find useful. I usually do this but must have forgotten on this occasion so thanks for the heads up!
i think i can do this
Go for it!
Thank you helps out
Wot, no Plumber's Mait???!!!
No!
Remove the shroud on the buttom lmao
A sponge is better than the towel
3rd gutted
Too slow!
Pulled apart my toilet today...blocked outlet 🤮
Nice!
POOR EFFORT, the most salient instruction, in these times of water conservation, was how to adjust the height of the water in the cistern! You flew past that part, like you were not sure how to do it?
Couldn't watch all the way through, your feet are minging.
