John's music from this period is a source of spiritual nourishment for me. Most people would find that laughable after hearing his unusual vocals, but the ethereal, otherworldly dreaminess of the music is so beautiful. I'm glad that he got healthy and sober, but the truth is the music he made on heroin really did seem especially inspired.
@@Scotty-P George Harrison's 1968 Wonderwall Music, is something I highly recommend to you if you like this Frusciante stuff. Particularly a track called "Dream Scene".
This piece of art along with this entire album explores musical boundaries in its own spectrum...johns music at this time is very inspiring to me today because of his ability to explore the boundaries of not thinking... he just played it out of his head I don't know many people who could do that...today his art has adapted to different genres and he even admits he doesn't like the music he writes today... But in my opinion you have to appreciate his ability to change his view on different styles of music so he can write on a different page each time...that's what makes him a genius artist...
I think John likes the music he writes nowadays, otherwise he wouldn't stop playing live concerts;because he doesn't feel the need he or his music needs to be accepted by anyone else but himself
any true frusciante fan would say this album's fucking awesome..possibly his best. I honestly am obsessed with it. though there were reasons for the making of this album, it's still good.
Damn, such a long time since I listened to anything from this album (or John for that mater). This song really is an emotional trip, as most of his earlier stuff.
Yeah. There's a kind of art that simply can't be created without digging into the darkest depths of existence. What's so awesome about John is that he managed to go so deep and actually come back alive. Very inspiring stuff:-)
has anyone else noticed that the song before this is called more? and the song before tht is called breathe? so if u look at the tracks one after the other it says "breathe more for air" i wonder if john did by that accident or not
Any truth to John not naming the songs? I don't think a label exec would be keen to make up names like "Poppy Man" or "Nigger Song". I remember a fan shouting out "Enter a Uh" at a show in 2001, too, and he played a bit of the beginning of it, so he was clearly aware of at least that title.
I don't believe that for so much time i disregarded this track because of the initial 50 so seconds... it's one of the most moving instrumentals of Frusciante!
fuckinggg love thiss songgg and albbumm dont care what is was made for.. john put his effort into it no matter what. glad he turned sober though:) still living and creating amaazingggg music. one of the few remaining musicians
@st0nerrxkx He RELEASED the album for drug money, he didn't write it for drug money. That would imply that the songs don't have integrity or were written for another reason than pure self expression. Most of them were recorded at the same time as Niandra in 1992 before he become an addict. One of the songs is from 1987. A small handful were boombox recordings at the peak of his addiction. He finally released it in '97 for drug money, true, but most of it was recorded in the early 90's.
@pape37 while this IS my favorite song off this album, the reason most people hate it is cause he made it specifically for drug money, not for artistic value or any of that spiritual nourishment you speak of. john admits it himself.
yeah sounds like a bong, but i love frusciante's guitar styling's and im so going to miss hearing it with RHCP on im with you. and this song sounds incredible.
@pape37 youre so fucking right.this whole album is the most underappreciated ever i think. but i dont refer it to the heroin. its just so deep.its from a man that had nothing to lose.
@itsskatee Smile From the Streets You Hold. Good luck if you're trying to be buy it, it's out of print now and wildly expensive. Frusciante promised to re-release it one day, but when and if that day comes nobody knows. You're better off trying to download it, I'd imagine John wouldn't want you to spend 200 dollars on this CD anyhow.
Well the music of this song is gorgeous...not sure why this album is looked down on. I will say though that the song probably needed some polishing...doesn't seem like it got a lot of attention
its very cool to hear him smoking weed at the begining cause probably he add take a heroin hit juste above to sit and be ready to start the song with a good high
The 'whistling noise' is John taking crack from a bong. The reason it's not there is that there were different releases trynna make it more 'clean' i guess. Now the album is basically impossible to buy because John admitted that the whole album was for drug money so yeah.
@pape37 fair point, ill admit he put some passion into some of the songs, i personally love the album, but the reason its hated stays valid; AT THE TIME he cared very little about about self expression or integrity.
Warzed Arcanist I think it referred to the era of Niandra since several songs are recorded in that era as for example: Height Down, Well i've been, etc.
@pape37 I hear you man i am a ex heroin user not long out of rehab!!!! do not get me wrong i am one of not many drug users i own a Flea bass rare rhcp cds rhcp trainers even cock socks lol I never shat on my own door step other wise if you did you would have to clean that up!!!! i am still fighting demons but not on such a level as the H long live JF

I'm glad to find there's so many other lovers of his first two records here!
Most part wasn't even made when he was on heroin. If we talking niandra

The first 50 seconds of this track makes me feel like I'm sitting right next to him.. It's magical, as is the rest of this beautiful song.
Yess sir
John Frusciante, the only man to die and come back to life, through song.
A comeback which would rival Lazarus.
He's Jesuschrist
This album holds so many emotions that pass through my body while listening to it
Ariel Christine I agree. Something deep down in my bones loves this
its so raw and honest that it gets to the core of us because we can tie these notes and melodies to personal experiences
i love johns instrumentals. i love listening to all of them one after the other they help me think and write my own music
i feel the same way about his music :)

This is really one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Its so pure.. king John
this album is everything to me man
this gets directly to my soul like anything else in this world

It really is, man. Some of the tracks are too intense and gloomy for me to listen to too often though.
Wouldn't say it's his best but there's something really relatable about it
The best of times, the worst of times
Im calling it, this in 20 years will be the next syd barrett/velvets/nick drake
already is in my book.

Definitivamente ,siento poder enteder a este socio.Grande John tu música cambia corazónes :)
I got stuck on acid one time to this. It was a beautiful chaotic bliss. The first two albums that is.

andrew kilik wow! Maybe he did it intentionally
it's not a mistake nor an accident
Kablamize nah this whole album was named by someone else, John wanted to put untitled 1,2,3, etc to every song but Birdman Recods didn't allowed him

Been recently delving into Frusciante's 90s catalog, great stuff.
And that's a huge hit at the beginning, christ.
He hit bongs like a champ
true dat
preach it brother
how is this song even possible john is a genius.
gracias john, eternamente agardecido por tu arte
it fills my soul

wow now thats amazing
sei grande frusciante
love the lyrics
thats one big hit!
Exactly that.

sound like traditional japanese music.
I thought I had grown out of john’s experimental stuff but I was greatly mistaken, this stuff is the unhinged medicine that makes me feel better

No one will ever be able to understand his genius.
this is what the pros do, make awesome music with live shit and release it way later at a time when its ok, when it will be appreciated.
This one makes me think of George Harrison's "Dream Scene", although that one precedes all of Frusciante's experimental stuff by almost 30 years.
Nice
@pape37

no but it was meant to be on that album, but wasnt because it would've turned out too long
listen to it backwards
@enqane yes
why is the bong hit not on my SFTSYH? is this from the 18-Track Version?
The first 50secs sounds like he's smoking a bong
That was a meth pipe.
Parts of this one sound just like "Soul Removal aka Height Down" he did with River Phoenix.
This looks like "height down" sometimes...
I just bought the CD I noticed that the whistling noise at the beginning it's not there. wtf?
Multiple releases and re-releases were released. The copy I have sounds muffled and the bong rip is excluded as well...
+SpedingOut damn, that's part of the song. :-D
