"The title song was a very intense moment, because I was having verbal communication with the spirits while I was recording; and I started crying at the end of it. The spirits give you ideas for things, and what's important to them is what's important to me. I'm much more concerned with my fame in their world than with my fame in this one. That's why it's been difficult for me to adjust to being alive at all." - John Frusciante in an interview with "Guitar Player"

Camw1n so true. John was on the decline and was heading towards a rough place of heroin and loss the following years. The guy was already a tortured soul. But this phase and the one after lead to RHCP's Californication, so sometimes rough patches make an artist find the best of themselves and what they can bring to the table. He had a lot to do with their success with that album.

Exactly. I think people are so wrapped up in their romantic associations with Frusciante that they love to think about all the horrible suffering he went through to make this music. But he was already a strange and creative individual before ever using heroin. Most of Niandra Lades was recorded while smoking pot during the Chili Pepper years. Anyway, this might be my favorite song of his. So beautiful and emotional with a great instrumental ending.

Such chaotic beauty. Things nowadays just don't feel as purely destructive or honestly accepted as the 90's drug induced euphoria which was brought forth by such weighted down music attached to living the lifestyle that it was hinged upon. In an unapologetic way, I can't help but reminisce on being young & just getting beyond nodded out under the overpass or just walking the Train Tracks at 4 in the morning drinking 40's & blazed out of our minds.

I remember the first time I heard John Frusciante, solo. It was something from Niandra Lades, I think "Mascara." I just remember thinking, wow, it sounds like this guy just put together a masterpiece in his living room, and how it's so odd that most people think this is pure garbage, but those who dig it do so to the point of no return. I'm just so glad to be one of those people who sees the beauty in John's early work, and it inspires me the most, to this day, in my own songwriting efforts.

I think the whole Album "Smile From The Streets You Hold" totally epitomizes the concept of "emotion before technique". Frusciante undoubtedly sounded like the trainwreck he was at the time. Still the raw aesthetic of his guitar playing is undeniable and sets emotion to music in such an unfiltered manner that one cannot help but be astonished... and maybe even feel somewhat miserable. It's even more astonishing if one compares this to his later work as it makes his recovery even more inspiring.

Heroin put the dismal/despairing qualities to this album. As you can see his style becomes much more "detached" than his normal music. Sounds like he died, went to hell, and got to record music there. And to me, its one of, if not the most beautiful and amazing things ive ever heard.

Smile from the streets you hold and niandra lades and usually just a t-shirt are my favorite records. The rawness of each strikes such a deep chord in me, he's not afraid to show everyone himself inside and out. His heart is honest, and his soul is genuine. Such a fantastic collection of art. The fact that the majority of population doesn't know or simply doesn't like these sounds makes me even happier. I feel like it's just for me and people similar to me to enjoy. Love it

Out of that pain comes a new creative vision n a freedom to live without reserve. I’m happy to be here n I hope I can share just an inch of my insides with the world. If we can all just share a bit of what’s inside without reserve we can make the world a better place and inspire those who are on the brink of emotional spiritual collapse. John loves that kind of "Chord progression". He used it in a lot of his songs...
I used to hate musicians who did the same kind of thing everytime... but i've started to study music a lot, and realized that every musician has his easy way to show their feelings, through his style, kind of chords, different ways to play...
And finally when I accepted John's way to make music, after studying "Why did he scream, or used that chord..." he changed his style again. Sorry for the bad english.Hugs

I honestly pray with my whole being to be able to receive John's music, because sometimes not even the music can penetrate because I can;t feel anything
His music makes so much sense in a mathematical way the way he combines rythm patterns with emotions, if you can actually decode what he is putting into this music it just brings you to some unique euforia
like the guitar on the left channel at 1:05 makes so much sense to my brain
there are artists that are good but the only one to resemble John's music beside Josh Klinghoffer's work is a band "recomended" by John himself called Autechre, like the euforia state I get from decoding their music into my brain is similar
I don't know what to call it, it's not necessary the quality of the sound or the emotion put into the music, it's just something that I would call HEAVY, reffering to sound pattern, just like John said in the 1994 interview, there's something that connects all the great artists of all time, that's what I'm talking about too. Imo that's where life is at, thats the most balanced and abundant and rejuvenating place I can think of - probably a place in our brain that is newly developed that not so many people can tap into, exactly the place we're being driven away from by "the elites"

i have allway's been a big fan of john, i seen him play mothers milk tour in belgium in de brielpoort(deinze) & have all of the records he"s made; but this one is special to me cause i payed a lot of money for it cause someone stole the original i had in the 90's, i also have nine chili peppers vinyl records; all of frusciante two of slovak & both the klinghoffers: but i have all eleven ceedees(so i geuse i'm a fan!!) charlie x

Honestly I think John's music right before quitting the Peppers, when he was angry, was sometimes questionable, but the songs on this album, to me, were more relaxed and structured.

It being about River is just a fan rumor. No evidence to it being about him aside from John once saying he wrote the song about a friend who died and had written it before the friend died. That's all we know for sure.

Its been so long, since I felt the heat of the sun on my pawww, you're the one who knows me best put your fears put your plans to the test. Your smile from the street, you hold my heart in your hands while i breath. Oh you're always on the decline, take another sip of wine, a toast to us, you're the one with the stars, oh.... *awesome guitar riff*
