    ⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider Wind strength here around 25 knots.
    Sailing the boat backwards can be very useful. If it’s windy you can just put the boat head to wind and then use the rudders in reverse but be careful - they are extremely twitchy when going astern!
    Use the mainsheet to get head to wind - like half a tack and then off you go.
    Be very careful not to hit the bottom with the rudders going backwards as they won’t kick up which could result in serious damage.
    Thanks for watching.

    I tried this today on my Hobie Wave and it went very well. I’m the only cat at my yacht club and little did I know everyone in the bar was watching me. Many thanks to Master Joe

    Not remotely fair. You go as fast backward as I do forward!
    Very cool technique.

    With onshore wind very cool (on sandy beach!). Fly to the beach, turn 180 degr, follow Joe's trick. What helps for comfort is to put/ keep main sail block to block after the turn. I did it in France this week, 2nd time in 40 years they saw this!! Hey, did I feel cool!!!! Joe & team, see you next year again!!

    Tried this on the weekend. Had a strong tailwind pushing to shore. Turned around and backed onto the beach nice and slow impressing bystanding crowd.

    For docking you can keep the rudders down (and steer w them), release the Jib, kneel and push the main out to the side sail backwords and turn up to the dock

    First of all, thanks for bringing this to the attention of the general Hobie 16 populace. Back sailing is a skill they should all develop.
    Secondly, something's wrong with your rudder adjustments if you have to go out on the transom to break them free. You should have them adjusted so that you can lift the tiller arms while you're on the tramp. Mine clicked in and out of the locked position very easily, and they stayed locked when I needed them locked.
    Third, as has been mentioned in the other comments, if you bring the main to the middle, the boat will weathervane aiming right into the wind. I don't think it makes much difference.
    We always backsailed with me on one bow and my crew on the tramp. The bows never went underwater. If I needed to steer I stuck a foot in the water. Then at the last minute, right before the boat hit the beach, crew joined me on the other bow to lift the transoms out of the water as high as possible to beach the boat farther onshore less dragging. Then immediately pull the quick pin on the mainsail to avoid problems with sudden wind shifts.

      We have our rudders wound up to 14kg at Wildwind so that they don't kick up in strong winds - because we're sailing in strong winds every day.
      In an ideal world we'd be able to lift them conventionally without inverting the cam but our boats are used all day every day so the constant use prevents this from happening.
      Once again thanks for your advice.

    I accidentally did it once. I overshot a parking spot on a crowded beach. Clewed the jib to the windward side and steered it backwards. With it being my 2nd summer sailing, the "old guys" were quite impressed.
    Edit: for clarification, I clewed windward to try and turn, but sailed in reverse

    Haha, I’ve sailed backwards before but not on purpose Lol!!! So cool, looked like y’all were surfing!!! How do you backward tandem surf a Hobie 16 you ask? Just ask Joe!!!! Very entertaining video for sure!!!!

    Cool little stunt! Had no idea it was even possible. Are you pretty much heading directly down wind?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  5 років тому +1

      Yes, if you deviate too far from straight downwind you'll start going forwards again

    So next time you try to sail backwards on a H16... Try this.. You can actually go to weather pretty good by sheeting both the main and the jib on the same side of the boat just as tight as you can.. Preferably with them on the weather side of the boat with the sail shape inverted from its usual position for the side of the boat.... Then just get it moving backward slightly and roll up to weather as the leach of the main and jib become the luff.. You usually have to lay on the tramp and hold the crossbar because the rudders are twitchy.... Just be very mindful of the main traveler car which is loaded up to windward of you. It can move and occasionally you will have to hold it. Also... when sailing like this you can imagine the boat will be very inclined to pitchpole over the rudders... Keep the crew at the bows if there is any wind at all.. This one blows peoples minds because you really can go to weather quite well... What I haven't figured out is if you started a race moving to weather backwards... Would you be on a port or starboard tack? I'll find that out once I master flying a hull from this position.. LOL!

    Thanks for the video. I would be interested in the same exercise but single handed and no jib, for example to leave a crowded beach with a strong offshore wind. Maneuverability is important, speed is not.

      Yes, I can certainly take a look at that.

    from what I recall from my learning, the main sail should be sheet in, from what i saw, you did not do it, does it change something ?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  5 років тому +1

      I sheet the main in to turn the boat into wind. After that, because of the strength of the wind it was better to have it completely loose

  • @jaysparc
    @jaysparc 5 років тому +1

    Why would you ever want to do that? I sail my trimaran forwards offshore or onshore wind, coming and going? do cats have difficulty heading up when coming in with speed? (just trying to understand the reason).

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  5 років тому +1

      If there is not enough room to turn - off shore out of a narrow slipway in strong or even moderate wind you won't make the bear away but you can sail out backwards into space. Or the opposite - onshore wind looking to get into a narrow space where there wouldn't be space to turn into the wind.

    Joe! How much experience does one need to be able to handle one of these? I've never sailed anything where I needed a harness but I'd love to try. Can you find the technique yourself and through youtube or do you have to learn it at a sailing club?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  5 років тому +1

      start with a less powerful boat like the Hobie 15 or dart 16 look back at the videos on Joyrider TV, always wear a buoyancy aid, tell someone you're going out (phone in a dry bag is a good idea) don't go out in off shore wind.
      Better really is to get lessons or sail out of a club

    • @stevenvachon9745

      I learned to sail solo (and now maintain and tweak) a Hobie 16 completely from this channel, aside from setting one up from scratch which I watched on another channel (only because Joe didn't come up with that video yet....). Set it up properly, learn your terms and watch his tutorials over and over (especially the one with Charlett) ...his voice will return in your head on what to do when you are out there 😎. And start with light winds. Before you know it you'll be "giving it the beans" This is a worthy channel to support. ⛵
