- Thanks to Jesper Nielsen for the audio content in parts - this is the whole interview pieced together in its entirety for your enjoyment.
The interview was filmed by Sirius XM as video content (there are snippets floating about on UA-cam) but I haven't seen the whole 2-hour interview in video format.
So here's the next best thing. Enjoy!
Someone finding Kurt's guitar in a trash can and glueing it back together is something of legend
"The Beatles swallowed Black Flag" Love that description.
Right?! Sums up nirvana perfectly
I was at the St Louis show at Mississippi Nights that almost turned into a riot. It was WAY more intense than described on this video. Bouncers were kicking kids out left and right for stage diving and Kurt was visibly getting PISSED OFF about it. A bouncer broke his effects pedal in the middle of a song so the band left stage after only playing a few. The place got real ugly real quick. Serious riot vibes in the air. After about 10-15 minutes they came back out and Kurt told the audience to get on stage. Then they started playing again and the bouncers left everybody alone rest of the show. Nirvana took complete control and made the club/ authorities abide by the band's rules. So much charisma. It was unforgettable.
Dude you are lucky .I wish I got to see them live . If I could go back in time I would defo go back to the 90s .
I was ten and wanted to see the band SO bad. When I was eleven, it was over. You know how lucky you are. I wish I could ask you so many questions.
Thank you for sharing this with us, very cool story man!
Was that the show with RHCP?
I was 17 when this album came out. I can tell you first hand, Kurt's death didn't make their music legendary. The music did. We knew it at the time it was happening. We felt it.
I live on the other side of the globe in Turkey, the day Kurt died my highschool teacher mother canceled the lesson because many of the girls was crying. His impact was incredible on his generation.
I totally agree. I had litteral CLONES of Kurt at my highschool. I was wondering how they manage to look alike so much, skiny boy, white T-shirt, and half long blond hair falling at the corner of their lips...It was half ridiculous and half scary
@@Freekingparrot That wasn't a clone, that was the real Kurt. He never died, he just went back to school.
Most definitely! I remember seeing smells like teen spirit video at age of 11 and even at that age I knew it was something special! The 90's was amazing for music
This album was THE ANTHEM of our generation... and the beginning of a sound that was a movement that I have yet to see be repeated. Some things are just so magical that they can never be recaptured.
listening to nirvana got me playing guitar
It was really encouraging for me, i was about to give up on guitar but then learning Nirvana songs got me going again.
I love Nirvana but Foo Fighters has better songs. For me, FF got me into playing guitar.
Same here. I always wanted to learn and then when I got really into Nirvana I immediately knew I wanted to start playing so I did and its amazing. The funny thing is that I had tried several times to learn and never could...as soon as I started trying Nirvana songs, it just clicked and I figured it out!
same here. fucking amazing. all these people inspired. amazing stuff.
X-RatedKiwiFilms Yeah, me too
Half of my friends were into Nirvana and Pearl Jam, the other half were into Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre. I was into both, what a legendary band with legendary songs.
Yep. I was 10-11 when all that stuff started coming out. Shout out to Beavis and Butthead as well because there were a lot of alternative bands they would play and then boom, you'd see them on Alternative Nation or 120 minutes. Great time to be alive even as a young ass kid with no real clue. "Dre Day" one minute, "Lithium" the next.
@@waxoftriple9 that early 90s era was the best no doubt. Peak of western pop music
I miss Kurt Cobain. Even though I wan't alive when he was, I still feel connected to him. His voice resonates with me. Rest in peace, Kurt. You're in nirvana now.
I also wasn’t alive but feel connected to his as well! And also felt this comment to my core.
For those of us that met him... I promise you... you really missed out.
My jaw dropped and I got chills when I heard the 'boombox' version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Palpable magic.
Krist seems like such a nice guy
Aleks He is. I talked to him in airport once. He was just a cool, quiet guy. I didn't even mention Nirvana, just said hello, but I mean... he just knew.
He is really cool
Goes for krist and dave... kurt was certainly more the curmudgeon
How about krist is a great bass player
@eric how about when he introduce himself as Latka Gravas
I've never heard Dave talk so much about Nirvana, this is great!
he still talks too much about himself for me, it's like he can't admit that Kurt was a genius
@@Julia-zz1gq why does he need to say that to make you feel better ? Gtf out of here
@@jfromstate8581 because it is Kurts music? Also you don't dictate who has the right to comment. Check your manners
@@Julia-zz1gq so because it’s kurts music he has to admit he’s a damn genius ? 😂 holy shit !! I cannot with you people 🤦♂️
@@Julia-zz1gq bruh in his book he goes into great detail about how devasted he was when he lost kurt. He couldn't listen to music, he couldn't play music. He was lost. He literally had a panic attack when he saw a guy wearing a nirvana shirt with kurts face on it. He didn't just lose a band member, he lost a great FRIEND. He even says to this day, it hurts him to listen to nirvana. People grieve differently leave him alone
I like to imagine that Kurt's sitting there as a blue ghost, like in Star Wars
interrobang94 this is the best comment ever haha
You made my day dude
Bitching, endlessly about how god damn ridiculous all this Nirvana hero worship is...
Then (without the slightest segue way) bitching even louder how there's not enough god damn Nirvana hero worship!
@@baileywvu1 I know right lol the Force is with Kurt and through us all
Kurt the Force Ghost
God I wish that Kurt was here, he would have contributed so much to this interview-as well as so much more to music and as an inspiration.
right on bro, right on
ya think?!?
Kurt would have a receding hairline by now..
@@GnomeChomsky9999 yeah I don't know if I could handle Kurt sitting in the middle looking like Terry Bradshaw!
He didn’t really answer much in interviews with the rest of the band. The only person who answered the questions was Krist and he just joked
dude this ablumn is much older than me and I fucking love it. Its amazing to realize that nirvana can inspire kids in high school 20 something years lately. Thank you Kurt thank you.
Hello mason, yes Krist speach for kurt's memory sums it up pretty good :) HOWEVER ahah don't be surprise xD Please keep diving more and more into time, at least until the 60's ^^If u didn't get wasted on The End final you're missing out xD
@@Aniki82 the end final? Get wasted on what?
Truly an amazing album that reaches so many people on so many levels. Kurt would have loved to have seen how many people are deeply moved by his music. Especially so many years later how it's reaching people still. Absolutely amazing. There was an honesty to his music and you can hear it in his voice. He's one of my favorite singers of all times I think because you can hear the honesty in it
@@No1Particular i think he’s talking about the Doors’ song
I was about 8 years old when it came out and everyone from my age all the way to adults realized that this was going to change the world.
Wow. This is so cool. I'm so glad I just happened to stumble across this. There's nothing better than listening to 2 of the 3 members of Nirvana just sit back and reminisce on the good ole days. Like Krist said at the end, Kurt Cobain should've been there with them. Answering questions with them. Kurt will live forever in his music. Thanks so much for posting this, dude.
This was the best interview i've ever listened to from them after Kurt died. Thanks for uploading this.
Nice to hear Krist being himself...he's calmed down in his older years but throughout this it's fun to hear him goof around again!
3 guys who make the world a better place. Bless em.
i would die just to hear kurt's voice in this recording
But that guy died, though... didn't he?
yeah Kurt Cobain is dead, though his music lives on...
Yea, so buy his records and keep on shoveling money into Courtney's big mouth..
@@GnomeChomsky9999 pretty sure frances owns all his rights now. why ever since she turned 18 (2010) more nirvana stuff has been FREED from lawyers and petty squabbling. EDIT: Like this interview lol
If you died then you wouldn’t get to hear it
Wow. That was so beautiful. What a powerful message of healing and reclaiming life too! After Kurt died- having that feeling of “I’m gonna live”- as krist said... is so life affirming.
The music will always live on in our hearts.
👏🏻🌹❤️
First record i ever listened to. Still my all time favorite record after all these years. When i first heard teen spirit, i had goosebumps and the hair on my neck stood up. Powerful.
Listening to this in 2022! What a band. Such a pleasure to get the insights to a magic album. 46 year old now so was at the perfect age to hear this amazing band when they kicked the music industry in the balls!
COVID pandemic lockdown and i've finally found this gem ..
When I saw smells like teen spirit the first time on mtv I stopped whatever I did and was in shock when it ended. It was like a rollercoaster that run with 2x the speed. One of the most inspiring musical moments of my live.
Life changing
I like how Dave was roasting the past drummers, saying they were insane, while there are pictures of Krist and Kurt lighting his butt on fire while recording Nevermind.
Didn't they light various things including themselves on fire while they were recording In Utero? I think maybe the picture was taken then. There's a similar radio show recording on YT I think it was 20th anniversary of In Utero where Dave talks about this.
This is like a 90's drip into an IV, Jon is interviewing.... agh! This is pure comfort.
Groovy interview. I remember when you could not escape Nevermind even if you wanted to. Excellent album.
1) I can't believe I'm stumbling upon this for the first time, in 2019.
2) How cool is this conversation?!?
3) How cringe are some of those audience questions? 😬
4) Damn, I miss Kurt, and this group
Not a bad list.......the questions dont seem as bad as comments make em sound, but im only 40 min in
I’m 4 mins in and what the hell kind of question is “when you made the album were you in the same room?”
Like you won a contest to ask that?
I don't mourn kurt anymore... just thankful we got as much as we did
Very cringe
Yea me too, I’ve seen all the stupid ‘Dave talks about Nirvana’ 2 min long videos but never came across this and this is fkn great
“Will Lenny Kravitz please come down to the office now......?”
Man, I wish that had been recorded on one of Krist’s home movies.
are these videos available for the public eye?
I'm glad I listened to the whole interview, it was great all the way through and the last 10 minutes is pure gold.
This album is now 27 yrs old that’s crazy this song is 12 years older than me yet it’s a part of me in a way. I wish I lived in the time kurt was alive I miss him even though I didn’t have him. Nirvana is history but damn good one at that
When I listened to Nirvana for the first time, I realized the raw energy they had and it seemed alien to me, but it was fucking awesome never the less
Never forget hearing teen spirit for the first tome!! Was I guitar lessons within weeks and started my own band within 12 mths at 13 yrs old....
we jumped up and down me and 2 mates wrecking the whole bedroom ripping sheets of the bed hitting shit with two drum sticks playing air guitar and Listen to it 5-6 times in a row!!! I’ll never forget that feeling!! That moment... changed my life forever!!!
It annoys me that every time Krist speaks there's a silence like everyone is thinking "WTF is he talking about?". Krist's stories are more interesting to me than any of the other guys.
Yeah Kris is too aloof for his own countrymen to understand whether he's being serious or not. As an Englishman who works in the US occasionally this often happens to me. American's don't know whether I'm being serious or sarcastic
enzo48 Yeah I know exactly what you mean, I'm Australian.
19Luke89 I like Dave and krist' stories equally. The chemistry that had 25 years ago and still have today really surfaces when they go back on the nevermind, in utero, and Kurt stories.
He’s always been like that.
He’s nerdy and passive aggressive and that’s absolutely okay. So am I.
You can only take the piss and have fun if you can back it up, Nirvana rocked every crowd and were never boring and predictable. Nirvana will never lose relevance out there.
My band was on Sony & were were on our first UK tour...our guitar tech walked in with the CD...I took one look at the cover & knew it was a special.
Thx Kvnthw! I remember listening to this on Sirius XM in my car and wanted so bad to stay in my car for an hour to listen to ALL of it . Unfortunately, I had a meeting to attend so missed most of it.
No problem!
Great show, and I love Krist for being just a down to earth man who has aged beautifully and still loves to just play music and have fun. Mss you Kurt, I think he would have loved this interview. I"ll always be a huge Nirvana fan ❤
Wow, love this recording of "Teen Spirit" - Kurt's vocals = chills.
Thank you for uploading this. I usually listen to old Art Bell but this was awesome. Nirvana is one of my favorite bands. Really appreciate this. Thanks.
Lol I'm sitting in the rain in my driveway of my house listing to the repeat podcast on SXM radio. Today is the day after the 30th anniversary of the release of Nevermind. I found this uploaded and when I'm done I can watch the actual video. Thank you for uploading this. These were the beginning of some good years of music. The years pass quickly. Let's hope they do another townhall for the 50.
thank you for uploading this! really mean it
Agreed. BTW, many thanks to the uploader. We just don't get to hear this stuff in New Zealand.
It took me 1 hour and 40 minutes to realise I didn't have to watch it cause it's radio ^.^
Same here. Was waiting for pips to move their mouth
Congratulations... :)
classic :D
I love that they're all just buddies in the end!
Thank you for sharing this!
why would anyone dislike anything nirvana
Kids born after MTV and music in general died.
Axel Rose! Metallica the Hair Bands of 80s! You name it! Slayer mocked his death!
Maybe they Prefer blue man group?
Because most of us lived in a democracy, and people like what they like. simple
You have a right to choose it!
Yes. Some of us read the video descriptions. Thank you for adding that in.
Many great albums were recorded at Sound Studios. Nevermind is and always will sound fresh in my mind every time I listen to it. It is one of my favorite Nirvana albums along with In Utero. Anyways there is a very special energy that the band output during the recording of this landmark break through album. Butch Vigs original mix of the album is more raw and in your face than the final mix of the album. This interview is pure gold. I always wanted to know more about the recording of the album and this interview answers every question that was in my mind.
Omg i hope that this year a new interwiew like that, since its been 30 yrs
Thank you for putting this together
Thank you for putting all of this together. It's a beautiful piece. :)
Most of the questions were “Did you know that you were making a masterpiece while you were doing it?” And/or variations of that question. You would think if you were there and hear that asked two or three times you would go “Gee, maybe I should ask a different question.”
thanks for uploading bro! what a great talk!
really cool of you to post, thanks
Badass. Thanks for doing this, Jon!
Fantastic, thanks for putting this up!
going to watch this later. still my favorite album of all time and always will be.
I think I want to find the real video. Still amazing listen
John Stewart is really a fantastic interviewer
2 hours of Nirvana, talking about Nirvana, Im in.......Nirvana!
Its very rare to feel exactly how i felt as a teenager listning to Nevermind on tape in the 1990s OVER AND OVER again than I hear Lounge Act or Something In The Way ITS ONE HELLEVA TRIP thanks guys and thanks Kurt your missed bud.
Thanks for the post. Love it.
Would Kurt have been up for these 20th anniversary things? I think he would.
The recording on Nevermind is one of those landmark moments in music history, like Elvis' first record, or The Beatles recording Sgt.Pepper. Can you imagine being a fly on the wall and hearing Smells like teen spirit being recorded, live, and then going, "yeah, that was the take, heard it 500 times"?
I'm just really glad these 3 decided to do this interview, and made it fun with a fan contest to come to New York and participate, very cool. All around, loads of fun this. But of course it would be, it's Nirvana lite. :>)
Thank you for this !!
Great stuff! I love how John Stewart sets the scene in the music industry in the late 80's and very early 90's!
thanks for posting this man
Great story about Kurt losing his shit recording Lithium. For such a tiny guy his intensity was such that he could scare Butch. That speaks volumes.
***** Depends on ones definition of tiny. 125 lbs is certainly not imposing.
fatcatbuzz wasn't he 5'9 3/4", that's his listed height
fatcatbuzz well he had scoliosis so was always hunched over and was very very thin but height wise, he wasn't that small
@TheSeattlegreen Lol...shut the fuck up.
TheSeattlegreen you have no idea how idiotic you appear.
Just an astonishing emotional Hodge podge of instant connectedness to the raw purity, sincerity, humility and communicating to the soul of expression of creativity about this band that keeps the corners of eyes bursting with tears and explodes my heart because loving this band seems like the only thing that really reminds the human condition to be urgently all in.
Awesome interview, so many revelations!
What a great conversation!
Whoa! Jon Stewart and Nirvana? I stumbled onto the greatest podcast of all time.
This is great, thank you
AHHHH BEST TWO HOURS EVER!
Love you Krist and Dave..I understand why Kurt loved you so much
both dave and krist knew kurt was murdered and by whom and they supported the murderers for 20 years probably because courtney bought them the same way she bought the SPD and coroner. not so lovable really.
David Anderson yes that's why they've been threw tons of litigation against her for the better part of 20 years.
@@davidanderson7199 it's really sad they don't defend him
The legacy of good music no matter an artists individual pros or cons or perceptions or misperceptions, it will live on forever
@kvnthw Man, I can not tell you much I appreciate you putting this together
That boom box version of Teen Spirit was awesome. The whole song was there.
i very much enjoyed this interview
How funny how the dynamic has changed. I watched an interview from 1993 and it was Krist doing a lot of talking and goofing off with Kurt Loder from MTV, with Dave throwing in the odd joke or comment and now during this interview, the roles have completely reversed. Admittedly Krist was drunk during the 1993 interview and nearly spilt his wine over Dave’s knee but still....
Loved this very much.
1:23:00 what Jon was tryin to press about Guns N Roses was that Duff came up to Krist sayin he was gonna kick his ass, and Krist kept ignoring him, and Duff kept pressing him till Krist, being so tall, leaned down and told him to go with him where he and Duff would fight....away from Duff's boyguards, where Krist said he'd gladly kick his ass. The 2nd story was where Axl showed up with his model girlfriend, and Courtney went off on Axl and calling his gf a whore etc etc...classic Courtney, and Axl got pissed and told Kurt "Kurt, tell your bitch to shut the fuck up." and Kurt turned his head and told Courtney "bitch, shut the fuck up." idk if this all happened at the MTV awards or somewhere else. But Dave and Krist didn't wanna talk about those infamous stories.
the part where Kurt tells courtney to shut the fuck up isn't true. Kurt made that part up when explaining the story to the audience at a show, as a joke.
+Cam Dude Kurt was being sarcastic as usual.
Duff did punch Krist in the face and has since apologized for it. Being from Seattle himself, a lot of his friends in the music scene there chastised him for it. I saw that he and Krist recently jammed together, so all is forgiven i suppose.
+Cam Dude according to Courtney he did say it in a deadpan sarcastic way...
Haha classic kurt......bitch shut the fuck up hahaha probably pissed axl off more then anything
20 years!!??................that makes me..........Fucken old!. Damm
and now it’s a 30 year old album
No problem. I've heard this before, but it's cool that you have all the parts combined. I was telling a friend about this, so now he can hear it all at once.
Krist is talkative here, its a nice thing to hear
he often is, there is a nice video on here where he talks about Giant in the Trees
These two hours were great!
and last but not least kurts singing, so raw and scratchy and screaming meanwhile still maintaining the note tride and true. the music is great. there are reason everyone loves them
The last 5 minutes are inspiring...make Music, it's therapy!
I love Nirvana . Nirvana was revolution and it never happened before and I don't know something like Nirvana ever happen in future.
Great interview. I remember going to the local music store here in Cali with my older brother back in the 90s when this album first came out. We had no money and when we went back to his car he pulled all these tapes out of his jacket that he had stolen. I had no clue lol.... My brother loved rap he had all these rap tapes and one nevermind tape..after listening to all his rap tapes first, he popped in nevermind and we listened to the entire album and loved it...RIP KURT
30th anniversary, love you Kurt
23:29 This part about Evan Dando being everywhere cracks me up
Thanks for linking that timestamp. I laughed at John Stewart making that comment in his scary voice and it not getting any reaction.
longest video ive ever watched on youtube and it was all worth it! :)
id like to hear butch talk about those amps used, oh well. as for the impact of nevermind i was about 12 when it came out. i was a metal head who grew up to hair bands. i had already gotten into pumpkins and janes addiction but nothing was as potent as nevermind. it was so concise, heavy, poppy, catchy, and sonically powerful and pleasing. girls liked it. nothing touched it. the lyrics could be both abstract and culturally relevant. the look, the lyrics, the sound all came together. paramount, legend.
If you look up butch vig breaking down never mind I think in drain you he mentions using a few different amps
I agree....i was big into Metallica and 10 at the time, but nevermind made me put Metallica on the back burner almost untill now haha then the unplugged album i probably listen to once a week, insane how much sound and melody was packed into their music and it wasnt even complicated shit you know?
Love this!!
That was excellent.
great to lie down and listen to.
some dude gets the honor to ask Butch, Krist, and Dave a question and asks how their hearing is. what is this world coming to?
FooFighters1188 I think it’s a very legitimate question. I can’t fathom spending a career having extremely loud, noisy guitar and cymbal wash BLASTING into your ears, night after night after night for years. There are many, many people who came out of the 80’s punk scene who suffer now from crippling tinnitus. Some of them just have to retire from playing live because they will go deaf if they do it any longer. Some were smart and always wore ear plugs from the beginning, even though it wasn’t as common back then. The best example is Dinosaur Jr- they are arguably the loudest/noisiest band ever, and they were smart enough to all wear heavy duty ear plugs every single gig they ever played. It can be so tempting to not wear ear plugs because they cut out all the high-end to the point where you often can’t hear yourself play.
Cool that Dave mentioned working on Old Age that didn't make the album
Man, Krist Novolesic is a cool cat. Pretty interesting interview. Thanks for the upload.
Really interesting interview with a lot of information I wasn’t privy to.
another thing is you felt like it was your music, you grew up like that the words speak to you. you feel like its YOUR music and no one elses. the one thing that you can have you know. its yours.
