Today I'm going to be chatting about beauty brands that "fell off" and by fell off I just mean brands that's aren't talked about as much OR have strayed from their original brand identity as a whole. Please don't trash or harass any of the brands in question, this is meant to constructively critique brands that I already use and love!

MAC always seemed like they didn't want my money. When I would walk in no one would help me or even talk to me. I think they got too cocky thinking they were at the top of the game, and it led to their downfall.

Happened to me too here in Canada. I was waiting for a while and kept staring at the two girls and they refused to acknowledge me. I just left, other brands would like my money I'm sure.

Mac got arrogant. The employees weren’t kind or welcoming, they discontinued awesome products to pander to particular market sectors, stopped innovating, and had more attitude than product. Not a recipe for success. 🤣
And their packaging was never updated...arrogance

True. As a teenager (15,16) I was in two different Mac stores twice and the girls are so ignorant, unfriendly and arrogant. They never really helped me and if you have bad acne they make jokes about you behind your back. All of my friends have made the experience
@@J.K.7 That's what bugs me the most about Mac. I remember being a teenager and feeling giddy every time I looked at my two little eyeshadow singles out on my dresser because they looked so sleek and cool. Now the packaging just looks very... of it's time lol.
I feel like Tarte really fell off. They haven't released anything exciting in a LONG time, and they keep riding the Shape Tape train.

I already got the feeling they increased their pricing!! I remember getting some of their stuff years ago and a while ago when I went to dorms and found a store that sells them I kind of found it to be higher in price (but compared to bougie brands it is still "cheap" tho - If I remember correctly they kind of have a bit higher pricing than L'oreal and Maybelline)
For real though! I just looked on ulta and some of their palettes are like $35 now? No ma'am.
LMAO! I dead got in an argument with a MAC employee because I was helping MY Cousin pick out products and she kept interrupting us and suggesting products that did not compliment her darker skin AT ALL. GIRL if you don't move around!

HATED that they changed the spiked eyebrow pencil to some hot mess.... why fix what’s NOT broken.
whenever I'vee been in a mac store there's just like this aura of judgment? they always push sales SO hard its uncomfortable. also, random story my boyfriend said when he was like 12 (he was a little emo haha) he went to get eyeliner at a mac store with his dad and apparently, the employes were laughing at him? no doubt it would be an amusing situation; seeing a little chubby boy and his father buying him eyeliner at a mac store but I just find it super unprofessional like how can you feel like thats okay as someone working in customer services?
I worked there and I agree it’s just times are hard.. MAC traffic flow is not how it use to be. So the artist are pressured into reaching their sales goals.

lmafo yup that happened to me too. and im a chick. I slipped in an individual black eye shadow into my moms purchases and right has he was scanning it she stopped him and said that wasn't hers. I quietly and shamefully said, "Thats for me" and all three employees burst out laughing.
I just wanted to say kudos to his dad for supporting him. He must have grown into an awesome boyfriend💜
MAC is like that one best friend you had forever ago that you have the best memories with so you try to reconnect but shit just don’t hit the way it used to and you’re too bored to keep trying to rekindle something that ain’t there anymore

MAC has fell off. I remember being 14 and looking for a red lip and the lady who worked there said that MAC doesn’t make red lips for people who look like me. I walked over to Sephora for my red lip and showed it off to her as I passed by the MAC store.

I don't really get why companies won't make eyeshadows that show up on darker skin colours. If it shows on Tiana, it will show on Snow White! So many white people also bought Jackie's palette and loved it. So, what's the harm in targeting darker skin tones if you are not abandoning the lighter ones anyway? That's just stupid from a sales perspective.

bunni sin - I don’t know where this statistic is sourced from, but I know that newly launched makeup products made for deeper skin constantly sell out at rates that other skin tones usually don’t - at least at the store chain I’m associated with. Everytime. So the market is there.

Nah, I am loyal to their moisturizer. I have been using the dramatically different for like 12 years. Their makeup cleansing balm is also great.

I think makeup geek started the MAC demise
Victoria's Secret is still the top seller of women's lingerie in the nation, even in spite of their PR fiascos and slipping sales. Kudos to Rihanna and her success but the narrative that Savage somehow dominated VS is in itself a PR narrative. VS has a lot more competition and them slipping has multiple factors.

But also, as I’m watching her more I feel so awful for her for the fact that in this society, she had to make so many disclaimers and announcements just so people don’t cause problems with her or takes what she wants to say out of context. She’s just trying to give her honest opinion on companies, as she’s paid to.

I walked into a MAC without makeup and the employee followed me around the whole time I was in there and when I opened my backpack to pay she came around the front counter a little and peaked in my bag to see if I had stolen something. Never walked in a MAC every since.

I do think that Huda Beauty is stepping up the game with their palettes. Something about the brand has always felt off to me (as a black woman), so I never purchased anything. But their shadows do look fun and amazing!

MAC were theee brand for dark skin girls back when everyone was was ignoring us. Unfortunately they got big headed and complacent. I will always go up for the Chestnut liner and Studio Fix powder, but that’s it. I also agree about Becca.

i agree 100%. i don’t think they were expecting these newer brands to accommodate the brown girls like they have @ a more affordable price. i went to the MAC counter after I don’t know how many years because I wanted to try their foundation again.
They did good stuff years ago for yellow undertone skinned but then everything started looking orange.
Tanya Hamlett Fenty changed the game for woc. Even my friend in H-town Texas who is Scottish and very fair says fenty changed he make up game as she has yellow undertones for a white girl.

I totally remember feeling intimidated and judged walking into a MAC store when I was a teenager just getting into makeup, vs Sephora which was so much more inviting & approachable

YEEEESS, also I feel the products' quality has down. I got an extreme allergic reaction with the last lipstick I bought, but I tested my older mac lipsticks and it didn't happen. I think it's because they change some ingredients in the formula or sth...

I got 3 coastal scents palletss, the reaveled ones. Those were actually decent. Ive de and re- constructed them, and kept one whole pallets worth of shades i loved, and gave the other two to my mom. I just have too much to keep all those old palletes that have less than the best quality

Yes! I honestly cannot even think of a recent launch I've heard about from them. I actually still like their eyeshadow formula. I'd like to see some more on-trend launches from them.

BFF24able Lorac is a brand that was really popular in the beginning of the whole beauty guru trend. They were really known for their eyeshadows (especially the Lorac Pro Palette) and some of their eyeliners and mascaras, they’re still great but you know, people move on and find something newer and better.

As someone that grew up in China, Lancôme is the shit over there, I think Lancôme and most luxury brands target the rich asian demographic. I think thats why they real quiet, cause they loud in Asia

Absolutely. I used to freelance for Lancome and almost everything they do (70%-80%) of their line is focused/tailored to the Asian client.
SHANTEL ROUSSEAU and you can really sense that in the aesthetics of their branding. Very minimalist compared to some of the louder stuff.

M.A.C. kinda lost me when they discontinued EVERYTHING I love. Everytime I find something that suits my complexion a year later it’s no longer exists. Now I have to go to “ certain “ M.A.C. Locations to find stuff even for my skin tone. Most stores only carry for the white/ Asian skin tones. So I have to order online or find dupes.

I remember when colourpop was selling nail polishes and their liquid lips/super shock shadows were $5! their prices have been steadily creeping up. and even as a super pale person, I never thought their pressed shadows were great either. I hope they can rein it in
omg I thought this was just me. I started buying their stuff about 5 years ago. also ive noticed their lippie stix don't smell as nice. I was comparing my 4 year old ones vs my 6 month old lippies and they don't have that nice smell anymore
Nadia D'Andrea makeup also expires. i’m pretty sure that’s why it doesn’t smell the same after 4 years.
i’m very very pale and i still am not... getting the payoff i want. them and morphe. the formula is so dry and chalky. bh is soooooo much better
One brand I feel that is struggling is urban decay. Products are amazing but they need to stop with the 100 different naked palettes

the naked palettes are literally my least favourite product from them. they need to spend more time promoting that bomb stay naked foundation, setting spray and generally everything else they make.

Agreed! Not to long ago i went into MAC Bc I wanted to start using their studio fix fluid foundation again. Not only was the quality trashhhhhh but they charged me $10 for a pump for the bottle. When did that become a “thing”?
Sandrine White it’s been a thing for a while! I bought a foundation from them in 2015 and that was an option and as a high schooler of course I just bought without the pump lol

Bobbin Brown is one of the few cosmetic brands that back in the day had a wide range of foundations for POC.
I agree but, they still have plenty of work to do. Their undertones are weird. I still struggle to find a match.

Bobbi Brown's line is and has always been exceptional. Their prices are a deterrent for most consumers however.
@indoora Actually that honor goes to Estee Launder, they made makeup for black women in the 70s however because of their price point the average consumer wasn't spending their money on them when they had Fashion Fair and Flori Robets. These companies were founded by black women.

I also think MAC hasn’t been innovative for a while. Personally, with the introduction of more expansive complexion lines and Fenty...MAC became less of a go-to.

I think a lot of brands that were well established before social media blew up have really struggled with embracing social media and just staying relevant in general

As a former MAC employee myself what she said was 100% truth. Some of the employees were so arrogant and condescending. Most were friendly but the few that weren’t went out of their way to be bullies. It was unattractive and I just had to separate myself from them.

Other brands that have fallen off - Urban Decay, Makeup Forever, Cover FX and Kat Von D. Sometimes in life what goes up must come down. Not everything can become timeless and revelevant forever. It’s something can be applied to all stages of life.
I used to look forward to EVERYTHING Urban Decay put out, but I can't remember the last time I checked for them at all :/
I think where Kat Von D fell off was that she involved too much personal stuff in her business brand. While people loved that her brand was vegan and cruelty free, the whole anti-vaccine thing rubbed people the wrong way.
They've rebranded, completely without her. KVD Vegan Beauty is no longer associated with Kat Von D at all.

It is Blockbuster and Kodak all over again. When a market reaches the point of saturation, the big inventor brands that used to just expect customers because they were their only option are now scrambling because they are required to invest into their marketing to actually attract and keep customers because the once smaller brands are now competition because theyve been innovating and actually putting in the time and effort to develop relationships with their customers. Without continous innovation and motivation, a company will get behind the curve and eventually die out.
