First abdication by a Japanese emperor in over 200 years paves way for son to ascend the throne

When Japan’s 85-year-old Emperor Akihito retires on April 30, 2019, he becomes the first emperor in over two centuries to abdicate in the world’s oldest monarchy.
His son Naruhito will take over as Japan’s next emperor, setting off a chain of events including a new name on traditional calendars for the era of his reign.
Current Imperial Household Law, which dates back to 1947, dictates that the emperor is a “symbol of the state” with no political power, and limits succession to males in the family.

the reason why the country has it's peace for not having the politics overruns the country. Unlike many of Southeast Asian country where politics seems to be ruling the whole of it and made the higher ups looks powerless. Living in Japan for a decade made me loved the country and adapted it's ways and culture. In my time Japanese ppl were very polite, happy and caring.

In Britian, our monarchy is marked by having several, separate Houses (read: dynasties), whom ruled over many periods. As a result, it could be argued that, after both China and Japan were both unified after the Warring Period in each nation, then, so it seems, especially in Japan, was a single ruling Dynasty established.

Any source ? Taiwan had a low casualty during japanese occupation. I mean okay, my ancestors were from Mainland and those "Chinese" who fought for the mainland were Nationalists and KMT was suffering from heavy loss but they still lead on, where are those communists ? Yes, hiding somewhere in Shanxi, Anhui, Gansu provinces... i mean the KMT and the Republic of China carries the pride of Chinese people who fought against imperial Japan.

Yes it's all Mainland Chinese, hell as I said earlier, my ancestors and grandparents are from Mainland and they fought against the imperial japanese and survived their tortures so I get your point. Just saying that Taiwanese today holds little to no resentments against Japan.

To be honest, as a Taiwanese living in the boring city of Kaohsiung, I care less about unification as we CAN JUST LIVE IN PEACE right next to each other, there's nothing for us to gain with "reunification". Most Taiwanese people don't like war with China but WE ALSO DON'T WANT to merge with a country that cares less about human rights and civil liberties. I care less about politics, it's only causing toxicity.
They might not have a male son but the other member of the Royal family have one, the crown Prince sibling' son, Prince Hisahito, currently 12 years old. Making him the next in line.
If something happens to Hisahito or he doesn't produce any male heir, that will be the end. He is the last in line. I wonder what will the imperial house of Japan do.

@@alexy2952 the real ones to blame for the atrocities were the former Imperial forces of Japan, who were disbanded and their officials were either hanged or sentenced to eternal imprisonment. Nationally, Japan has already owned up to what they did in the past. But yes, there are remnants that need to be taken care of, as they may potentially harm the nation's future with its competitive eastern nations (e.g. members of the ruling LDP party). That said, ordinarily Japanese folks shouldn't be stared at with hostility for what it's past/or concurrent governments had done.

Considering that the Emperor is only in his mid 80s and Japanese people have long life spans, I believe in 2018 the mark for 100 year olds hit 2 million; he had at least another decade of rule.
But it is sweet that he abdicated to be with his wife.
Life expectancy for a Japanese male is a bit less than 82.

Okay since nobody in comments no nothing about Japans history here is few things regarding this.
Female could also inherit the crown but Americans chanced that when Japan lost the war. They didn't like equality so I think Japan might go back to old ways soon :)
Also it was common practise (they did always retire) to the Emperor/Empress to retire and live peacfully their old days. This one was too chanced later so retireing is not a new thing.
After the WWll Emperor Hirohito announced that they are not divine. The announcement shocked the people of Japan even tho they ofcourse new that they weren't. But Emperor saying such a thing was a big deal. This was because Hirohito couldn't stop two atomicbombs and because they lost the war.
Living in the court has always been SUPER boring in Japan. The have almost no freedom and nothing to do. Japanese writeing system was developed by women in the court because they had nothing but time to write poems. Before that they used chinese characters and thats why you can see them mixed with japanese. Japanese writeing was seen so fine and delicate that only women were allowed to use it so some male writers pretended to be women to practise this.
There is own separate 'government' for just emperors household. They decide EVERYTHING what royalty can and can not do. On the soil of royal palace normal laws does not occur, there is separate laws and if something happens it's not police it's royal guards that are responcible.
So no fun in Japans court just endless boredom.

The male line of succession is maintained with Naruhito's brother, Fumihito, being next in line for the throne followed by Naruhito's nephew, Hisahito (son of Fumihito)

-Somehow change that law, and make it possible for a male *and* female heir.
-Put someone else in the family who is a direct descendant of Amaterasu and is male (unless you still decide to change the law.)

Although I do think that maybe the Emperor is a very wonderful symbol for the land, I wonder if the Royal Family will ever get at least somewhat involved with the politics again.
