Cathay Pacific Airways has hit several rough patches in recent years, leading to some of the biggest challenges the Hong Kong flagship carrier has faced since the company’s soaring start in the 20th century. Cathay was among the hardest-hit airlines as Covid-19 spread around the world and the airline had to delay until the first quarter of 2025 a return to full capacity it had initially planned for the end of 2024. The airline’s reputation has also taken a hit because of a series of incidents related to bad manners exhibited by staff, only increasing the headwinds battering Cathay in the wake of the pandemic.

No wonder i've seen sam chui uploading about cathay recently
Were SCMP's editors in a coma in the past year? This video should be released 1 year ago. In 2024, Cathay has announced the 2nd highest profits in its history (for FY23) and its ranking in Skytrax has risen back to Top 5. It's quite ridiculous to release a video talking about how Cathay suffers while the airline is actually thriving :D
Thriving by off shoring staff and find mainland workers, this is a co-op between the owners who have conflict of interest by publishing " bad finances" so they can continue to pay miserable salaries
The video did say the airline is still ranked among the best in the world towards the end.
Aiya, this is part of Cathay anti-China agenda las... which is intensified with NSL's implementation. Of all people, why does SCmp interview someone in an Australian university in Qld. for views about a HK airliner. You mean they can't find more than one in any of 6 HK Unis. If anything, it shows they're more interested to get the more anti-China western narrative for their reporting.
are u airline nerd. haha
Skytraxx score doesn't mean much
They never improve the salary package of pilots and cabin crew to pre-pandemic level
It's a market economy. If their pay doesn't attract talent, they must introduce better pay. Look at the 30% plus increase US airlines have given their pilots or the number of bonuses given to staff by Emirates and Singapore Airlines. Cathay is burying its head in the sand and dogmatically sticking to the staff pay decreases it imposed during the pandemic.
I’ve been a loyal Cathay Pacific flyer for almost 30 years. The airline experienced a rough patch, through no fault of its own, and is still trying to recover. I still fly Cathay whenever I can and hope that things get better soon.
They are stuck in their own way. They hadn’t changed anything in for as long as they existed. They are not innovative enough to keep up with the current world. They are not progressive to cater to the next generation of customers.
Let's be honest: Hong Kong's glory days are over. Singapore will continue to be the dominant and sole gateway to the Asia-Pacific region. This is the cost of Beijing's crackdown on Hong Kong's freedom.
Super agree on you
Not really the cost of Beijing crackdown, but rather it’s the importance of free trade zone is no longer a necessity to access the China market as China opens up.
Singapore will also steal away flights just because of how nice its airport is
@@ToiChutGongWuHello little eyes 😜
no bro. HK is still the greatest place to launder money.
CX just chose to cut service post pandemic and increase pricing while others took the time off during covid to devise ways to better quality and service. It is really sad to see the fall from grace of what was in the recent past, a high quality brand.
Pretty sure you seldom fly with them post-pandemic. Soft product was much better than pre-pandemic.
CX is awesome. I just flew them recently to the UK. Great service and cheap.. Will come again
I used to be a loyal cathay pacific flyer now I am a loyal singapore airlines flyer , sorry cathay you dropped the ball
Did you have status? Hard to believe star alliance gets you more from HK
@twelve98 I suppose they could be taking Lufthansa and United connections, but you do have a point.
@@twelve98 to be totally fair to Hong Kong I used to get some amazing fares on other airlines flying to Europe and Africa hopefully they will shine again may just take some time
Singapore airlines is the best in the world. Cathay pacific worst airline ever..
@@John_life777 you’ve clearly never flown much. There’s a ton worse than Cathay especially in North and South America
Tough for badly treated people to return to you.
I think Cathay is not rivalling Singapore anymore but the new Taiwanese airline Starlux.
Hi SCMP, the Cathay website had multiple technical issue when I tried to book a flight. So that is an additional problem.
I do hope that CX return to Dublin where it was a very welcome visitor .
As a result of Cathay Pacific (CX)'s refusal to resume Cathay Dragon (KA) operations, I have decided to instead travel on CX flights to KA destinations.
I'd have a bit more sympathy if their airfares weren't so expensive. They used to be a lot cheaper.
This headline is misleading and deceptive. "Excess baggie" for an airline refers to luggage, not about any corporate issues.
Shame on this intentional deception.
They now charge for every little thing. Used to be two check in bags now it’s one. You used to be able to select a seat, now you have to purchase it. They nickel and dime everything and everyone now. They might want to repaint their planes yellow and call it spirit airlines.
Singapore Airlines>Cathay Pacific

Can't match kiasu and kiasi mentality of Singapore
Singapore Airlines so much better.
Singapore girl.. Youre a great way to fly
No sense of sympathy for the difficulties of this carrier. All are of their own making. The most serious shortcoming is the negative service to mainland passengers. Firm management is needed.
@@kiyoshitakeda452 Besides, since the HK peaceful demonstrations in fact some Cathy P hands sabotaged the airliner safety that travellers will not forget. That should never be allowed to happen that also means a lot to me about the HK security and safety mindset.
7 million is actually a very large population - New York is only 8 million and it is the largest city in the country. Too expensive to fly Cathay Pacific $1600 and the service was not great on my last flight. The meal was quite small for an 18 hour flight. When we asked for snack they ran out quickly - no more cup noodles. No peanuts or biscuits. Many crying babies on the flight so it was noisy.
The heaviest baggage of Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong is China. Ever since reunification, China has been trying to siphon Hong Kong strength toward other Chinese cities. The development of Shenzhen has minimized Hong Kong’s roles on marine transport, industry development, and international commerce. Ultimately, Hong Kong will become another level 2 or 3 Chinese city. What a pity!
Not a pity. HK is still great. I live here so shut your mouth
China is 100% not a heavy bagage for HKG. During the asian crisis, HKG economy suffered a lot, which country was there to save HKG?
Which people visit the most Hong Kong and which country trade a lot with Hong Kong? The economic development of China contributed a lot to Hong Kong economic growth, that's what Lee Kwan Yew said during a interview when he talked about Deng Xiaoping
@@feralKatoo You are correct that China mainland becomes an increasing portion of Hong Kong’s economy and everyday life. But it comes with heavy trade off: 1) Foreign companies are retreating from Hong Kong market. Hong Kong lost its premier financial center position in Asia. 2) Hong Kong lost its law based political system and becomes a puppet of Beijing. 3) The one China two systems promise was broken. There is nothing to show to the people of Taiwan that China’s promises (written on treaty) worthy the paper they were written on.
Upon integration, Shenzhen has largely replaced many functions of Hong Kong. Given another 10 or 20 years, Hong Kong will become another Level 2 or 3 city of China with a fond memory of its colonial history and system.
I also had a bad experience with Cathay Pacific . When I was flying from Jakarta to Hongkong, the cabin crew refused to help me put my bag on the upper cabin because "Cathay Pacific does not allow its staffs to lift up heavy items in order to avoid injury". I thought it was a new policy so I complied. I had a hard time putting up my bag up on the upper cabin (it was 7kg) and then almost fell down while the cabin crew just laughed at me in a demeaning way and said "what is inside your bag? is it something illegal? ha ha ha" . For many years I have been flying with Cathay and that was the first time Cathay has let me down.
I am not a China national. I may have said or expressed my opinion about China which their govt may find distateful. I will not go to HK nor China nor flying with Chinese airfleets due to China security law. Am I being paranoid? Perhaps, as I am nobody. But it really does not worth it.
Who cares?
@@pbworld7858 well, you replied.
How about rehiring the staff that was let go during Covid
They probably working for Singapore airline lol.
If I was them I wouldnt come back considering how they were treated before they were let go
They need to pass through the employment process, even they are employed once again, they need to start from 0, regardless of the previous entitlement.
@@openboxtherapy1010 Wrong. Check CX's annual report. They rehire 2,000 former employees in 2023 alone.
@@openboxtherapy1010 2,000 of them already rejoined CX in 2023 alone.
Cathay is cooked. Eva Air, Starlux, and Singapore airways own the future of that Southern Asia region
why such kind of background music ? again ? whenever there are some specific agendas, SCMP would use some “strange” music giving a weird perceiption of the subject ? Also there are many biased and partial reporting ? Many Yellow people still there ? 軟對抗?
No
How can the so called aviation expert who works in University of Southern Queensland have such poor English? He already doesn’t sound his words properly, his sentences are wrong grammatically. How was he hired as a lecturer? If I studied in Australia and got him as my lecturer, I’ll demand a refund!
why do you hong kongnese like to use "so called" so much. It makes you sound pretentious.
How can I apply from Canada ? Cathay is still far better than Air Canada or Cdn airlines
I'm hoping Cathay will soon return to Adelaide before my next trip to Europe
nice brief
Cathay Pacific used to be an excellent airline until the Chinese regime took over Hong Kong 🇭🇰.
@@AhmetTekin101You should be thankful to China for bringing you back to freedom from 100 years long oppression.

@@ToiChutGongWu More copy and paste please little eyes 😂
@@ToiChutGongWu cheenk, he is saying facts
@@ToiChutGongWu Hello back little 👀
Wishing you luck, Cathy Pacific.
u should have commented on why Cathay has soooo many White pilots?? It's a lot better now that more asian pilots are being trained, but for decades, it relied on pilots from australia and UK and US and europe. Even during the Pilot cadet hiring process, if you are white, u have a huge advamtage, because your english is going to be better than say someone from asia naturally. And for cathay dragon's hiring process, it is important that the applicants can form friendly and relatable connections with all those white captains, so naturally white applicants would also have a significant advantage when connecting with these hiring or training captains, and lots of these white applicants, whose fathers were also captains in cathay... So, there was a huge racial issues among the pilots in Cathay... how do i know all these? Lol, im sure u can guess
HK Chinese has always worshipped the AngloSaxsons.
I've wondered about that. Whenever I travelled on EVA Air or Singapore Airlines, it was always an Asian pilot. But on Cathay, it was always whites. Even though I don't travel on Cathay now, I still see white pilots with the Cathay cabin crew at the airport or hotel they were accommodated, which happened to be same as I stayed.
@@MRT-co1sd this is true. It's colonial brainwashing from HK's colonial past. But that has changed now that HK has been reunited with CN.
Singapore airlines is the best in the world. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cathay pacific worst airline ever 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
Cathay's problem is retaining pro colonial racist staff rather than cleaning the house after 2019. It doesn't help being a British compay also.
So, Mainland Chinese customers opted to fly Chinese carriers, Hong Kong airline or Singapore.
SIA's character is an Asian airline with great hospitality and service for all while CPA is still trying to reconcile with its British / Anglo origin serving its colonial masters.
Amazing that no mention is made of HK’s new “security law” and of the degradation of freedom as a result. Why do you think so many people left HK but not Singapore?
Cathay pacific was the reason covid-19 spread from Wuhan to other parts of China. 😢
based on cambridge studies covid started in the usa!
the first badge of covid was categorized in a b c d
a was the origin and the us has the most covid a infections
china had some covid a but changed into covid b
some part of euro also have covid a but the most was covid b
I am disappointed that Cathay chose A330-900 replacement for their A330-300
Because A339 is a cheap replacement plane for A333. Cathay (CX) have a lot experience with the A333.
I think CX rather save money as opposed to paying for an expensive A350 with a long waiting list.
Their main problem child is actually the A333 are old (over 20yrs old if I recall) and breaking down too often, causing lots of capacity problems.
I think Malaysia Airlines has exactly same problem with their A333, nearly 20yrs old and breaking down regularly
@@dazza3g if you are talking of capacity, I was hoping they choose 787-10 as feeder for their long haul flights...
@davidtjahjadi5079
787-10... to me, from CX mgt perspectivr seems like an expensive option compared to A339.
CX seem very Airbus committed, so they should have gone for A350-900, but alas, I think their budgets are very tight.
However CX are committed to the B777X to replace their B747
@@dazza3g well, A330-900 is a fine aircraft and I have never been on one hopefully I could fly on Cathay's Jakarta- Hong Kong route...
