  • Outgoing Japanese emperor Akihito performed the main ritual to hand over the Chrysanthemum Throne to his son Naruhito on Tuesday (Apr 30). This is Japan's first abdication in more than 200 years.

      now seen just as a legacy of Japan's history. JDFN only has four cruisers capable of launching emergency ground to air missiles if there is an air attack. Does not have the range to strike the whole island group at any given time.

      the complex where this building is separated from society by a massive moat in Tokyo. In 1945 the emperor (old guys dad) recorded an audio tape that had to be fought through the army police to the radio studio. First time in nations history there was an attempt to make contact with people.

      Yamamoto was so pissed in 1942 to have seen how close American bomber raid got to that compound he personally made it his mission for the navy to protect that city at all possible cost. he took responsibility for not protecting his king.

    Even they are rich wealthy royalty....but with high quality of culture....they never show off any luxury lifestyle....the most well respects imperial family by his subjects and people around the world...

      yes only about 100 years ago his family was sending out the crown prince to the world, and it was during Nixon's Presidency when Hirohito would himself fly to Anchorage to meet on the tarmac the President. First international trip for named monarch in nations hstory.

    What I like so much about the Japanese enthronement ceremony is that, unlike some other coronations we had seen in recent times, this one is kept to simplicity in order to minimise the cost of operating the whole ceremony and yet it looks graceful and elegant.

    The emperor dissatisfied with the government's turn towards a war like political stance abdicates. We won't see a lot of that around the globe. A man of principle and honor.

      @@blackbird5634 you are close. traditionalists hold on to an occupation constitutional custom to shun warfare outside their islands. Debate raged on peacekeeping mission in fact. it was just a few years ago an interpretation was approved allowing the "self defense forces" to encounter a battle between an ally and an enemy of said ally and engage conflict zone themselves. That said, defense careers are seen as backwater jobs in todays economy at large and old doctrine to die for the emperors at all costs does not exist anymore.

      @@martintheiss743 Got it. This is complicated because for many years it was taught that the Portuguese brought civilization against the natives, enslaving them and the Africans. However, they also teach that during the domination of the Portuguese, they only came to steal the gold and leave. And the fault of Brazil being poor would be of the Portuguese. But it is a vision that has been changed a few years ago in schools. I myself am graduated in History and learned new methods on the history of Brazil as a colony.

    I would not mind a Monarchy if no tax money is spent on them. The wealth they have gained is immense. They should not require public money . This is the only way I would accept a Monarchy. Meritocracy should apply to all.

      Hirohito after the war capitulated his deity image. Wife of incoming Emperor was very much in line to be a key US diplomatic relations figure before she accepted the role of wife to the crown prince.

      1985 plane crash a Boeing technician explained to the lead JAL mechanic how a rear bulkhead popped and caused mechanical failure. Man realized for 7 years they were aware of the problem. He sliced himself to avoid telling that to the American.
