The section about that Total War tv show reminded me that the UK had one too - it was called Time Commanders and was made by the BBC - they basically had random people play historical battles using the total war games with historical experts on hand talking about stuff and I think offering advice at times. Was crazy to have that on at prime time on what was in those days a main broadcast channel.

That's what got me. Bretonnia, The (Holy Roman) Empire... alright, sure, WH is heavily influenced by the real world... but Nippon? It's literally 'Japan' in Japanese! Sometimes feels like Games Workshop was so eager to invent the game that it forgot to edit the first draft of the lore.
Anyway, whatever. Fun universe, good times, Lizardmen are based, etc.
(Though the Middle East being called the Dark Lands is kinda funny... does Reddit/Twitter know? They might wanna cancel WH if they find out.)

The warp (at least in 40k) is something that people seem to forget (including the gods themselves) is that they represent all thoughts and emotions, the good the bad, and the ugly. For example, Tzeentch may be a cruel and devious trickster, sure, but he's also a force of progress and a beacon of hope. Change after, change is neither innately benevolent nor malevolent. without Tzeench there would be no malicious schemes but there would also be no one clever enough to save people from those schemes. Nothing would ever get done and t the world would fall into a stasis of static karma.
This brings us over to Nurgle represents stagnancy. A lack of change, inevitable eternal cycles of decayed but he also represents the resilience resolve, and solidarity to face those same unsettling inevitabilities. Without Nurgle, there is no consistency, living and dying is just part of the eternal cycle… Nurgle is technically nature incarnate, and he loves ALL life, to him a human being has as much right to life as the lowest bacteria.
Then there is Khorne. He is on the one hand a force of merciless slaughter and hatred, but he represents justice vengeance, and honor. Unlike the other Chaos gods, Khorne would never try to trick you to stab you in the back. (he will just stab you in the face over and over again until your face stops resembling a face) and after all, everything in life will fight to survive which is another aspect Khrone represent, survival of the fittest. Without him, there would be no honesty, and no strength to fight against injustice
Speaking off injustice. Slaanesh may be a cruel, torturous fiend that breaks minds and inflicts untold amounts of suffering, but he/she/it also exudes just as much joy for freedom and expression and happiness (because hello, hello someone will be enjoying your pain and agony after all) Its ironic yet it makes sense. Slaanesh pulls from both extremes of emotional experience representing both the joyful freedom as well as crippling suffering without Slaneesh ash there would be no happiness and no grief to make those happy times mean anything

Good description but one big problem chaos gods in fantasy or 40k are not avatars of things they represent, if they are removed from seting change, bloodshed, seeking of perfection/plesure, fear of death/entropy of evryting would still remain they are not esential to funcion of life.

I love Tomb Kings and Necrons.
The idea of these ancient races, who maintain honor and dignity above all else, even when their lives will continue without end, resonates with me. I see it as a hopeful race, who will do what is necessary to be moral.
As for their game play, Tomb King's mechanic of limit armies and unit roster makes them a total late game power house. Necro techs allow you to reduce the high costs of buildings to nearly nothing, if you have like 3 mid level ones. So, you end up with hoards of tomb guards with archers. You can use their cavalry units, but the charge mechanic is busted, so tends to hurt you more then help you. The late game monsters, like the scorpion or sphinx, eat through chaff quickly, but have trouble with other monster units.
By end game, you can have ten high power armies patrolling your ever expanding empire.
About the only things I dislike about them, is their diplomacy. You end up allied with rats or orcs, and the dwarves and lizards hate your guts. Ironic, as robotic flesh bots and robotic bone bots ought to get along in their pursuit of killing chaos.

Fun fact- outriders are not 'dragoons' in the conventional sense. Dragoons in their 'classic' form are quick response infantry that ride to the location on horses then dismount and fight. Later on they became mounted riflemen as the conditions of war changed, and since we have no easily identifiable term other than "Mounted rifleman" to describe a cavalryman of that type it makes sense to say dragoon as you have here. Military cross-cultural terminology is pretty obnoxious.
I love watching your videos and have so many things to say about them, especially after multiple rewatches(I fall asleep to youtube a lot, so it not being a 'new' video helps with that.)

While in 40k you'd have a point about chaos, in fantasy you cant be further from wrong. Your forgetting that Fantasy has Sigmar, Morr, etc, etc.
And not to get too caught up in this, it's note worthy to point out that Fantasy was made first, then Rogue Trader, then 40k, all of which used to tie in via Amazons and the like, but it was dropped before it was killed more or less. (Orcs also used to be more like Orcs then Orks, and half-orc and half-elfs used to exist)
Sigmar (Who also used to be rumored to be one of the 40k empires lost primarchs) is a force for good, and Ulric is a force for law and so on. Note Elf gods in fantasy are worthless and don't give their followers anything.

    • @rhyderrek6155
      @rhyderrek6155 2 роки тому +4

Well, the Elf Gods don’t give their followers anything for worshiping them because both the elves and their gods believe that they are sufficient enough on their own. It’s not really malicious, it’s more out of a strange sense of respect for their worshippers.

Now silly thing about Bretonnia for me? It always had this huge disconnect between lore, tabletop, and people's perceptions of it. Were probably my second favorite faction, back in the day. Right after Lizardmen because who doesn't want a stegosaurus with magical artillery blasting fools? That's just fun.
Because lore with, Bretonnian Grail Knights are supposed to be Primarch level super badasses with a ton of magical powers. From "I can touch someone to instantly heal their wounds and cure diseases" to "I just took an Imperial Grand Cannon to the face and it didn't even scuff my paint" to being able to knock out war elephants with a punch, etc. However on the tabletop? They gave them horrendous stats that were more "Mere human" with like 3 Strength and 3 Toughness standard if I remember. The average Beastmen had tougher stats.
Now what's funny as well is the perception of most people was Bretonnia was always all about its cavalry charges and such. But as a Bretonnia player? No.... it really wasn't. At all. Calvary was like the Carnifex ended up for Tyranid players in 40k. A distraction that drew a lot of attention but didn't accomplish much unless your opponents just utterly ignored their presence.
The strength of the Bretonnian army was that their peasant levies were cheap as chips, and also highly effective in their roles and designated tasks. From their Longbowmen who were absolute memes with Fire Arrows that devastated monster heavy lists... to just how cheap their blocks were and how effective Men at Arms became when you had a Damsel cast a buff spell on them. It turned them from "Cheap fodder" into "elite infantry" levels. Something other nations could do... but a lot of them lacked the access to good magic lores to do it, or just the sheer mass of cheap fodder they could do it to.
Kind of the frustrating thing for me in Total Warhammer. Because the Bretonnian army really is based on their peasants and support... and due to the "Peasant Economy" system you can't really use them. Which leaves them the incredibly weak shock cavalry army that most people thought it was.

I always felt a wasted part of Chaos vs Order, particularly in the 40k setting, was just the simple question of Mass vs Individual. In 40k in particular (though also applies to Fantasy and Age of Sigmar to slightly lesser extents) the Order is all about sort of destined roles. If you were a peasant on some backwater mining world that's what you were. And your descendants. For millennium. Everything is meant to be rendered into a variable to be plugged into a machine in its destined roles. The super soldiers. the demi-gods like Primarchs, the fodder of the Guard and Planetary Defense Forces, the laborers, the priests, etc. You are the cog in the machine and you must accept and bow to that status.
While Chaos is all about individuality and what you personally can achieve. The Chaos Gods don't care that you were born a peasant. In fact they're more likely to take notice of the peasant with barely a stick to his name managing to break into a local government office to club the local mayor to death, than they are to care about some Chaos Space Marine warlord who manages to take over an entire planet with his vast armies. It's egalitarian in that way. That they care about how far you came and how devoted you are rather than the role you were born to fill or achieving mere competence with your expected forces.
It made me wish that, after Gathering Storm when Celestine just cored Abaddon like an apple that they were going to shake things up. Really play up that difference in the conflict. They had Guilliman coming back, the genetically engineered primarch who serves as an unquestioned Demi-God of Order... and opposing him make something else entirely. A "mere mortal" human who through ambition and a good bit of luck has transcended to Warmaster of Chaos.
The engineered God vs the ambitious Everyman as it were.
Alas of course they didn't do that. And in fact seem oddly allergic to this plot dynamic that is gift wrapped in their lore in both Age of Sigmar or 40k.

Nope i reject this notion that Mortal Empires is a special game mode, Mortal Empires is simply the grand campaign that every Total War game has had. The Vortex campaign in my opinion was more comparable to DLC like Hannibal at the gates or Wrath of Sparta, CA simply removed the grand campaign and told us that if we wanted the full game experience then we need to own both 1 and 2. It's a shit money grubbing tactic that i absolutely despise.

36:02 making Orcs just spore people like Orks was a fairly late retcon. I really don't like it as it's excessive 40kification of Fantasy.

1:12 Ahhhh Warcraft Adventures. Not getting Peter Cullen back for Doomhammer in the Warcraft Movie was a damn shame. ORCTIMUS PRIME was too amazing an idea to die in a cancelled game. Fun fact even into like 2009 or so I overheard 2 of the jocks at a high school talking about Warcraft 3. It was surreal.

Chaos isn't good or bad, it's a force a nature and a reaction to living beings. You've said it yourself, Slaanesh is the god of pleasure, but he/she is also the god of pain, same shit with the other gods. Tzeentch is the god of schemes, but he is also a god of willpower and inteligence, even Khorne has a good side, being the god of courage and the honorable side of battle. At least, that's the lore in 40k, I don't know shit about Fantasy Warhammer.

Not really, your forgetting that Fantasy has Sigmar, Morr, etc, etc.

Interesting to see another guy that doesn’t like Skaven. I agree completely with your issues with them. Of all the races they definitely fit in the least with their almost WWI aesthetic and no culture to speak of. They come off as more of an rts faction than a society, while many of the other races like dwarves, empire, and orcs feel the opposite.

I hate the Skaven because they act nothing like rats actually do. You could chalk that up to Chaos corruption but I would say that Chaos does not fundamentally change your nature, just exposes the part of you that keep hidden away from everyone, even yourself.

Another aspect of Bretonnia's ending that always got me (going by memory): The Lady is actually just a highly powerful Wood Elf witch, and has been gaslighting knights and collecting Grail Knights to serve as angels/gate guards in their new Utopia they constructed in a pocket dimension. The Lady has been a lie the whole time and somehow her "power level" is ... that low (all deity-like inspirations considered).
