Really enjoyed seeing you guys joking and laughing about the bovine adventure ❤ Miah has such a witty way with his humor and you Jess have an infectious giggle 🤣 Wonderful video ❤
Miah has the sweetest face. Love his expressions when he's talking to you - the love and the humor just shines through. OMG - just got to the cow/bull footage. Laughing out loud. Live and learn and ignore the haters.
Y'all cracking me up this morning with those "mysterious" reasons and then the monogamous udder cowboy! AND THEN, Jess got "stung" by the fence and..... This whole video made me laugh big time! By the way, love your shirt Jess! Thanks for the laughter - hugs and love to you and your family!
Everything she said.... *grin* I love watching before bed and falling asleep smiling and dreaming... Real life comes dirty too - and laughter washes it away.
"What others think of me is none of my business" has become my life guiding quote. Being authentic and true to yourself is the best way to live. And we all love you for that.
The very reason I'm drawn to your channel is that you are so willing to become vulnerable to share openly and honestly. I can see when you do this you are well aware of the firing of mean, know it all comments to come your way but you choose to be brave still and share for all of those that are inspired by you being real and honest and imperfect like everyone else on the planet. Thanks Jess... for being you! I cannot wait to see more of the new herd.
Share your mistakes without fear of other’s comments! You are helping others learn I love watching y’all!!! Keep doing what your doing I bless you!!!!😊
Don't worry. The farming mishaps are funny and balance out the great gardening success.Learning from and with you guys is awesome.Share the ups and downs and pray for the haters
"It's not funny!" It's TOTALLY funny, haha. I know it hurts, but I'm just glad it didn't finish you off! and the pups on the sandhill? so cute. You guys are such a cute couple. I love watching you interact with one another. Just sayin' As for the rude, negative and critical comments. It happens. Don't let it get to you. You're not accountable to them. Your animals are all obviously happy and healthy and your stuff is growing crazy, you are hard working and lovely, living your dream and that's all that matters. Thanks for sharing your life with us. I worked my way through high school and college on farms and love watching you all.
I love to watch your videos! So much to learn from you! Plants, soil-even the bad soil issues, farm animals, use the correct Canning jars-no the cheap ones, also the love of family, friends, & your community. Too many haters out there, don't worry about them!
when u said your heifers were in RAGING heat and you brought a bull onto the farm- I could see where this story was headed! Bless your heart..you two are soooo cute!
If a lesson's learned, there is no overwhelming mistake involved imho. Life-long learners know this, and over time they can even laugh about it. Right? Peace, love and blessings to you!
When you giggle, it makes me smile. Your sooo pretty, sweet, and I love how you two share your knowledge and say it’s ok not to know how to do something . Nobody is born knowing everything. Your so inspiring to everyone. Thank yous and may god bless your family.
Jess, when you looked at Maya and told him that your dreams had come true because of him. I feel that so much with my husband. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be living on our little homestead with my growing chicken flock and my starter garden. He does everything he can to see that I get what I have always dreamed for and I hope that I am able to do the same for him. Bless you and your family. You have made me smile this morning
I so appreciate that you are real and don't leave out your mistakes in your videos. We learn from our mistakes, and because of your transparency, we can learn from yours, too. I have a new understanding of what an electric fence can do. 😆
I had no idea there were certain lines that could and couldn't be grass fed. I live in cattle country and all the cattle are open range almost year round.
All cattle can be grass fed, but the special genetics come into play when you “finish” (feed to slaughter weight) on only grass, no grain and still have tender, tasty beef.
Yes, it has to do with the finishing. Because beef cattle require so many more calories to produce good meat, it takes a really long time to bring traditional meat breeds, like Angus, to finish weight on grass. Usually they are grass fed and “grain finished”, which really isn’t bad since they are usually only fed grain for the last two-three weeks. With these “dual purpose” breeds, like the American Devon, they aren’t as big or dense as a straight meat breed and can more easily be brought to a good slaughter weight on grass. My dad raised Angus for years that were grass fed and grain finished. Our family milk cow was a Hereford/Jersey mix and she gave around 4-5 gallons of milk. Crossbreeds like this can also be “homesteading” cows.
@@lajohnson1967 We also raised Angus on grass and grain-finished but way back then there was no worry about GMO or nasty additives to the grains. They were 5 weeks on grain with molasses and prime hay and made the best, tender, tasty beef I have ever put in my mouth. We as kids used to grab a mouthful of the grains and chew it because it tasted so good. I miss the old days!
it's not that they can't. but some lines will not gain weight as well on grass only, or maintain their weight. then you would need to supplement with protein which could become quite costly and possibly undermine your management goals.
Love your transparency. We are all learning on our journeys. If you are not making mistakes you are not learning. What I always tell me team as a Director
Oh my days! Of all the funny bits in this video, Raff claiming the hill charmed me even more than Miah's wit. Loved the horses running up to ya'll too. Was nice to have the different perspective of the farm showing the greenhouses in the background. An 11-acre pasture, amazing! We learn best by doing, and Roots and Refuge Farm is definitely doing lots! Thanks for taking us along.
Horse butts are just as beautiful as the sunset! Thank you for sharing mistakes and growth and learning with us. I so appreciate it. We are all learning, blessings💕
Ohhh come on Jess, a chuck wagon would be perfect. Lol. One time I was out in the horse pasture and one of the horses got in the barn feed room, so I was running to get him out and I straddled the hot wire, that my hubby was supposed to have turned off, and let me just say, that truly set me free. I grew up Pentecostal, and I promise I was jumping around like a hot summer tent revival. Love you guys.
Life itself is about learning, making “mistakes” is all part of it. Don’t listen to the ones that criticize instead of teach. You all are doing great!!! I have learned so much from you all not just with homesteading and gardening but just in how you view life. Thank you for all you do to teach us!!!
Thank you for EVERY mistake that u share with us. Every mistake that u share on here with ur laughter and ur willingness to fail and get right back up, and even in the face of thousands of people watching. Thank u for getting back up every time. Because there are thousands of people u saved from making the same mistakes. Thousands of crops and animals SAVED because of the information that u share. Never stop being you, Jess. U really shine light into so many peoples lives, myself included. Ur a real REAL good soul. Love you so much❤️
Miah should imagine the feeling of that cowboy hat on his head, the sound, smell, and movement of the horse beneath him... envisioning slowly moving the cows along... and enjoying that moment. That's when it will FEEL real. He has to feel it. 😇
The way Miah’s eyes and face lit up with complete love and adoration when his horses ran up, made me tear up ❤️ So beautiful that you’re both living your dreams. God bless you Both and your entire family!
I think you two are brilliant! Getting ready for the grow your own/sustainable shift and having it all ironed out is going to be a lifesaver for so many people. Thank you & the whole family for pioneering and sharing all the ups/downs/inbetweens 💚😊🍀
Miah mooning on Halley! He’s so sweet Jessica! Ouch! That fence bump pain looked awful! One thing I love about you and Miah is your honesty and the ability to laugh at yourselves! Don’t pay attention to the naysayers. There will always be trolls trolling around looking to criticize. Just bless their hearts! They’ll move on! Blessings to you both and your beautiful family!
Jess you and Miah are real! You are the real deal! This is why we love you guys. You make mistakes so what thats how we all learn. Love how you both make each other laugh and keep it real! You both keep it real this is Roots and Refuge at its finest! Thank you for sharing laughing at each other. That’s what its all about! If people comment who cares! They have nothing better to do. I cannot wait for the next video. I hope with more of the both of you! 😃
Thank you for all your stories. I think telling people your thoughts, your mistakes, your hopes is more than fine. How else are people supposed to try and learn? There will, of course, always be people who know better and are always perfect. I say just ignore those types. They can go on living their perfect lives. I am totally NOT perfect and I can be extremely dense. You are doing way better than I am and learning much, much faster! The good thing? Everybody has mistakes and accidents and misunderstandings. It happens, even to experts and 50th generation farmers. Keep going, living, growing and doing your thing, you two.
A pool, how nice! We had a pool for many years and some of the best moments with my teenagers happened while hanging out in there. Somehow they found it easier to open up and share their hearts with me while floating around in the cool water. Could make a great place for an affirmation circle someday 😀
You are such a sweet couple and family! It makes my heart so happy to see your dreams come true. May you have many continued blessings, as we are blessed to learn from you!
You guys are so cute! 🥰 I personally like when you share the slip ups b/c even though I don’t have my homestead/farm YET I file it away for later. You can’t grow without mistakes! Man, that shock looked like it crazy hurt 😵💫 So excited for you all and love watching your farm grow.
I just love y'all, I been watching you guys from the small start and I think y'all are amazing. Being able to watch your farm grow and to be on that Journey with you I'm just happy for you. To take us along the journey has showed it can be done for anyone. With hard work and dedication.
I kept watching you guys BECAUSE you're human! 🥰❤️🙏🤗 I discovered a few years ago that I was merely human too and since then I don't hold anyone else to higher standards than that. LOVE YOU GUYS!! Thank you for having Miah in a video. "We all need a Miah in our lives" - Love Grow Live Free channel 🤣
I'm a 65 year old woman, have spent many years living in many places thanks to the Marine Corps. Have always loved gardening and had tried to have something growing at all times. You have ignited that fire in me again. ❣ Y'all always make me smile! God bless you!!
I really enjoyed "hanging out with you guys" today. You have no idea how much sharing this time with you has warmed my heart. Especially loved the ending and Jessica's word painting of Mia's future moment of "realization", This is my life, and I love it! Just needed the music to go with it as he rides off into the sunset.... With his wagon😊. Blessings on you and yours. Maranatha.
This is hilarious to me! I love that you were responsibly breeding your cows and getting ready for this heard and it just never crossed your mind that you could use it 🤭😂🤣 I love it! This is why my hubby, father-in-law and myself talked through things ahead of time. (We are beef farmers) Because sometimes one or even two people can miss something super obvious. But with three of us we usually catch stuff like that 🙃
Hey things just happen so don’t stress about it. You & Mia are excellent stewards of the land and we all learn from real life experiences. I feel that’s the best classroom ever. I always look forward to watching your videos after work. I have been following your channel for quite sometime now maybe not from the very beginning but watched every single video from the beginning. I am one of those quiet viewers but y’all teach me something in just about every video. You have expired me in so many ways and my husband built me an amazing greenhouse this past spring and I have really & truly got back into my gardening this past 5 years after we bought our new property. The first thing I did was got some fertile eggs from a friend and incubated some chickens but my husband had an accident and was unable to built the chicken coop when we needed it ( I know you can relate) we had to go buy a ready made coop for them while they were young and until my husband healed. We still laugh about it today but I ended up with a beautiful coop in the end when he was able to built it. Now he has the homesteading bug and sees all the benefits of it and now he wants turkeys, more chickens and some goats. I was raised around it but he wasn’t. Story of the country girl marrying the city boy lol. He has always been country at heart though. I am 52 and he is 59 yrs young. He truly appreciates my gardening and preserving skills and I thrive on learning new ways and more efficient ways of doing things due to we both work full time jobs. Sorry I am jabbering. I just want you to know that you always encourage me and uplift me in just the right times. I know you are truly a woman of God and you are fulfilling your purpose in life. Don’t you change a thing about your character and keep showing your audience the authenticity of living and working a homestead. I am proud of you & Mia of being completely transparent in everything y’all do. And thank you for teaching this northerner to garden in Louisiana because it’s truly night and day! May you always be Blessed!!
Sometimes we say oops, sometimes, oh, no and sometimes we laugh. This was definitely a laugh. BUT these mistakes are not life and death and they are not caused by recklessness. They are the same kind all of us make every day. The important part of your group here and the VAST majority are thankful for your openness and honesty and being true to life. Thank you so much for life as it happens. Miah, get that hat!
You two are so sweet together! Thank you for the lessons and the laughter! I feel the need to apologize to Jess…. I had to rewind and show both my boys the shocking lesson, and I laughed each time. I’m glad your ok😀
Girl I've had one hell of two weeks I needed those laugh out loud moments u jsut don't even know. Thanks sure hate the fense got I know from experience they hurt. I've hit my head on one ouch!!
We are in our 60’s and we took over our family farm about 14 years ago. My husband’s family farm. We still make mistakes and I can’t tell you how many times we laugh 😂 over farm life! You both are great! I love that you share! Our cattle are in pastures from May to October or November. Then they come home here in South Dakota. We calve from the middle of April to the beginning of June. We moved the time to avoid late snowstorms.
I have been watching your channel from the beginning. I started watching when I could binge all your videos in one day. I have to say I am over joyed at how your dreams are coming to fruition and your hard work is paying off. I love how transparent y’all have always been on the mistakes and can tell you that you have spared me a great deal of heart ache in doing so. We moved out to our two acre homestead from the suburbs last year at the same time y’all moved to your new farm. You made the announcement the day we accepted an offer on our suburb house. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Roots & Refuge, Jovial Jess, Monogamous Miah, fits! Reckless - NO, gaining exerience - YES, sharing experience with unexperience - YES, needing to be criticized - not unless you've NEVER done dumb things - Hey Jess, God is posting a comment - LOL.I agree with Miah - a chuckwagon would be wonderful - just imagine the new recipes that could come, the new ideas for living rough, the cute hats and boots, you definitely NEED a chuckwagon!!!!
Jess you and Miah are good for my emotional wellbeing... I had such a rough time lately and watching you makes me laugh and even more important makes me happy! I have been a silent spectater to you fulfilling your dreams, what a journey! I love that you can laugh about mistakes being made, life is hard and laughter is good for the soul! You are definitely not stupid!! It's not just you guys learning, we learn with you. Lots of love from a cold South Africa 🤗❤🌻
So happy for you guys! ❤️ In early 2020, we bought 32 acres out in the country near my family. We worked and went without to make that happen. Even now, I’ll stop and look at my handsome hubby and say, “Hey. We own this.” Blessed to be living the dream with my best friend.
Loving the growth of your farm. It’s your farm and you are truly blessed to have found such a perfect property for learning and teaching. Oh to be young again. Sorry about the shocking development.
Cowboy Miah happy to hear your dreams are coming to reality. Chuckwagon and all. This has got to be the best video ever! Total laughter, no one is perfect. Your funny mistakes teaches us. What a wake up jolt !!!
Sometimes, the best learning comes from stumbling into the circumstances naturally. No foul on learning organically. I somewhat detest peoples expectations that you should have learned everything ahead of time. Like you said, we cautiously try and make many attempts to learn from others experiences, but our own lightbulb experiences are just as valuable.
I’ve been following y’all for years and I have to say that it fills my heart to bursting levels to see your hopes and dreams coming to fruition one by one. Thanks for sharing your momentous occasions with us!!! I bless you until next time 💜. Your friend in NC. I just started my homestead dream. No chickens yet but I’m working on it 👩🌾🌱🌻
What a beautiful color those new cows. They look so healthy, oh and meaty. You were talking about learning new things on the farm, if I already knew everything this is to know I'd be pretty bored by now. I hope and pray that your Jersey's take and both calves are healthy, beautiful milkers. I liked when Miah asked if we could get a chuck wagon. Sounds pretty cool Jeremiah. Maybe something more modern like a taco truck would work for now. God bless your beautiful homestead. We love you guys.
what a beautiful herd. i am so happy for you. Jess you don't let them negative comments bother you. just ignore them they're not worth your time. this is a wonderful learning experience for you and Jeremiah and bonus learning for us as you include us. you two have wasted no time since you have been there. you have accomplished so much in a short time. i am so proud of y'all. you're doing great. much love to you and your family 💕❣️💕 and God bless you all 🌹
Y'all are such a hoot, and such a blessing! One time I got bit by my fence on my forehead, oh boy did that ever light me up! I gotta say that the horses running through the pasture at sunset made my heart sing, there's not many hings more beautiful than that!
Nothing ventured nothing gainef! You've gained a lot. Knowledge, sustainability, memories, land, animals, etc. I like the honesty and humanness. Happy ranching! 🐄😎
Ah, Miah needs a chuck wagon for his classroom! Miah, check out Cowboy Kent Rollins' UA-cam channel if you haven't come across him yet. He has some great videos on chuck wagon cooking and outdoor cooking. Lots of recipes to practice for dutch ovens and cast iron skillets. Jess, I hope you're doing okay since getting shocked. I love how you guys roll with the punches and adjust plans on the fly when needed.
People who leap into the unknown are different from people who push at the edges of their known lives. We prepare as best we can, leap, and adjust. If you want something very different from your starting point, it’s necessary, not reckless. People whose dreams are right next door to where they are, can push cautiously at their boundaries and still achieve their dreams.
No human is perfect. The fact that you share your imperfections as a lesson to others is what’s impressive and people who try to call you out for it could be jealous that they don’t have that courage.
So good to learn that there are cows genetically raised to just eat grass. Here in UK farmers are quitting sayingthey cannot afford the grain for their cattle. Love Miahs love affair with Helen.....sooo funny😆
I’ve never heard of genetically raised grass fed only cows. My experience was that cows are grazers first and foremost. My mixed breed beef herd was pasture fed, with hay in winter. They got the occasional grain snack to encourage them to come up to the barn when needed, and garden scraps like corn stalks and such. The only time I grain fed was the steer I would fatten up in the barn for my personal consumption (grain feeding creates the fat marbling that is desirable in good cuts of beef).
I think it’s more to do with the final product. Some breeds will weigh out just fine grass fed and finished, where others will not reach goal weights finished on grass only.
Diana, I Agree ☝️
Amen to this!! Ever so true!
Don’t give attention to those who bring you negativity. Everyone is learning so pay them no mind or attention…❤️❤️❤️

Love that wisdom!
OMG, if Miah wears a cowboy hat while astride his horse and looks at the camera and winks, I'm done for. 🤗💗
Jess. Everybody has a starting point. Perfect is never and you and Miah are good stewards and your labors have nor will go unnoticed❣️❤️
Miah!!!! Monogamous udder kinda guy......thanks for making me spit out my coffee! 😁
Good morning friends, sweet Miah you are hysterical with your love of the favorite cow, monogamous 😂😂😂, love you all, GOD Bless
I have always LOVED that you guys stay true! You have this immense following because of that. Keep doing you boo. ❤️
That moment at the end with Jeremiah really brought tears to my eyes. It's amazing to have dreams fulfilled.

Don't let "perfect" get in the way of "good". It is hard to progress and learn if Perfect is the expectations - keep doing what you are doing.
The view of your homestead from this angle ♥️

I agree. I had some of my most special moments and conversations outside in the pool with my kiddos when they were younger.
You are such a sweet couple and family! It makes my heart so happy to see your dreams come true. May
you have many continued blessings, as we are blessed to learn from you!
The look on Miahs face when he noticed the horses coming over the hill gave me chills. Such beautiful animals!
I just love y'all, I been watching you guys from the small start and I think y'all are amazing. Being able to watch your farm grow and to be on that Journey with you I'm just happy for you. To take us along the journey has showed it can be done for anyone. With hard work and dedication.
I can't wait until our dreams of this come true until then I'm living through this. Congratulations on your new herd.
Y'all always make me smile! God bless you!!
Thank you for sharing the missteps as well as success. It's what makes you real. I appreciate the laugh.
That ending touched my heart!!! Sweet Miah....I can't wait for it to sink in for him! What a gift!
Maranatha.
I agree that Miah needs a chuckwagon, with all those guys working, they gunna get HUNGRY 😂
But with three of us we usually catch stuff like that 🙃
Oh my gosh! Y'all are the cutest couple! I'm so proud and happy for you guys and your Family 👪
May the light always shine upon you!🙏
Hey things just happen so don’t stress about it.
Milking devons, YES!! I was going to be looking for some in a couple years. I'm buying 10 acres now and have to build it first.
All the things you continue to teach us.. THANK YOU JESSICA!!!!!
Oh for cryin' out loud, let him get his chuckwagon! I would love to watch him work out of it. It would be great fun for him and the boys!
Girl I've had one hell of two weeks I needed those laugh out loud moments u jsut don't even know. Thanks sure hate the fense got I know from experience they hurt. I've hit my head on one ouch!!
I love this vlog...so blessed this Saturday morning. Congrats on all the new stock and the plans for mooving towards feeling the dreams. 🤗
You are awesome!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Woooo I am living for this daily content 😁 so beautiful on the farm today
So happy for you guys! ❤️
In early 2020, we bought 32 acres out in the country near my family.
I love seeing y’all together! Re: chuck wagon, turn the porch lights off, LOL!!!
From a farm girl. You guys are super cute. I stared laughing before you got to your punch line. Thank you for the giggles. 💕
That was so much fun -- the cow story, the electric fence moment, the vision of the future chuck wagon
Cowboy Miah happy to hear your dreams are coming to reality. Chuckwagon and all. This has got to be the best video ever! Total laughter, no one is perfect. Your funny mistakes teaches us. What a wake up jolt !!!
Love your humility. No one knows what we're doing to start. Keep going you are doing great.
You could certainly have a fall flat trailer hooked to your tractor with hay bales sq ones. Have a hay ride for the kids,!
what a beautiful herd. i am so happy for you. Jess you don't let them negative comments bother you. just ignore them they're not worth your time. this is a wonderful learning experience for you and Jeremiah and bonus learning for us as you include us. you two have wasted no time since you have been there. you have accomplished so much in a short time. i am so proud of y'all. you're doing great. much love to you and your family 💕❣️💕 and God bless you all 🌹
you two are hilarious. so glad you have FUN with all the work homesteading takes. I love watching you guys. thank you for sharing all you do.
Thank you for teaching and living out loud. Being open to show us no one is perfect is why I truly love watching you. And the new cows are beautiful 😍
I am so happy for you all. You are blessed.
That just brought tears to my eyes..! You two are just lovely.
go girl congrats on learning lifes lessons stay strong and stay blessed
No human is perfect. The fact that you share your imperfections as a lesson to others is what’s impressive and people who try to call you out for it could be jealous that they don’t have that courage.
So good to learn that there are cows genetically raised to just eat grass. Here in UK farmers are quitting sayingthey cannot afford the grain for their cattle.
Love Miahs love affair with Helen.....sooo funny😆
All cows can be raised on strictly grass. You just have to have enough grass that they never run out of graze.
He'll never forget his first Jersey Love. LOL! Y'all are SO fun. I love walking your path with you!
@@ERAforALL Agree, that sounds like a sales pitch for people that know nothing about cattle.
I think it’s more to do with the final product. Some breeds will weigh out just fine grass fed and finished, where others will not reach goal weights finished on grass only.
There is always a learning curve with any new adventure. Everyone goes through it and comes out ok in the end. Keep smiling and enjoy the new herd.
