Thank you! Two years ago after my second back surgery I thought I would never be able to garden again I was heartbroken that I couldn’t bend down. My husband built beds 3 feet high and we used animal bedding from our goats and sheep and chickens and rabbits to help fill the beds and it has been a game changer for me. This year we’ve been able to grow all our own herbs for the first time and enough potatoes to last about half a year that and I think we are on our way to being able to supply all the tomato sauce we need for an entire year. Ray said brought joy back to my life. We are also trying an experiment raising potatoes in old feed bags as the cost of plant buckets becomes onerous wish us luck

Why people are so judgy I just don't understand!! My husband sweetly built me raised beds three years ago as after fifteen years of hauling in dirt to enhance my soil and having very little produce from our $$ and efforts, those raised beds were a game changer. Also having developed painful arthritis I am so thankful to him for making my dream fulfilled and efforts easier!💕🌻🥬🧅🧄🥔🍅

My daughter never dreamed she’d grow some of our food because of a severe back injury, but Jess’s raised beds gave her hope. Now she grown our cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, a variety of peppers, many herbs, cilantro and strawberries. She feels and is productive!

I didn’t have the back surgeries but do have herniated discs and lower back issues. Sweet hubby got me 8 water troughs. The large ones. I can sit on. Bucket and easily reach everything. Best Mother’s Day gift ever. So happy you are still able to enjoy gardening

Try the giant boxes they have at the grocery store for watermelons. They are 1/2” thick cardboard so they’ll last at least one whole season. We fill them 1/3 - 2/3 with sticks/ leaves/compost and as little as 6” of soil. Can’t believe the amount of food you can get! The whole thing is biodegradable!

I'll third this RR Cottage. I mostly watch gardening and not homesteading content, but will continue to watch R&R. I do notice I get more of the fear based content suggested after I watch one of her videos, but hopefully over time youtube will figure out that I am not clicking.
My backyard suburban garden has a hugel/bioswale, an herb spiral and both in ground and raised beds. Just because I wanted to. I'm floored anyone would have anything to say about someone using a raised bed system. I'm glad I don't understand it. I like trying all of the methods!

Thanks to you and your cattle panel trellis' my mom is able to grow and tend to a hugeeee garden bed again! She has different medical issues (from battling cancer multiple times) and wasn't able to get down and up so easy anymore. The panels give her something sturdy and stronger to hang on to and pull herself up with! And of course it displays all her lovely tomatoes up right for her to pick with ease! Thanks Jess! For all you share with us! 💜🌱🍅🌻

I'm 77 and have been using cattle panel arches for several years. This year I expanded my arches to contain 5 panels so I could do my squash and melons vertically in addition to cucumbers and beans. And yes, the older I get, the more I need to hang on to the panels! My raised beds tend to get infiltrated with elm tree roots from beneath, so I don't have that method managed successfully yet. Still trying - still making mistakes - still learning from them!

@@cle5920 After my compost disaster with roots completely filling the bin, I used the thick commercial greenhouse fabric to go under my raised beds and so far there has been no issue except the first bed didn't get any because it hadn't arrived yet and that is the only bed that gets mice tunneling in it. It might be a ton of work to get someone to empty and put down the fabric but it would be worth it. Mine are 27" tall x 3 1/2' w x 12' and after my total hip replacement and rotator cuff surgeries, at 67 it has made a world of difference in my ability to garden.

Hey Jess - what you said about people being able to grow food in all kinds of circumstances reminded me of a lovely story. My Husband's Grandmother was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada with his Grandfather. Unfortunately his Grandfather was killed in a work related accident and Grandma was left with a whole bunch of kids to raise. And at that time there was no social safety net to help her. She lived in a small house on a small lot in a town. So she turned the whole back yard into a garden to grow food for her family. It was something she knew how to do and she loved growing food. My Husband has very fond memories of visiting her and her garden - and I think learned a lot from her about the journey. Thank you for what you do. It is important.

Jess, thank you for the time you spend on these videos. I know it has to be a real balancing act to get everything done in a day's time as you do. I am home, two days post-operative for serious back surgery (my third), so I'm definitely NOT able to garden now. I have faith that gardening will be in my future, and that God will give me strength to do so. I've been fighting this battle with my back for 13 + years now, and more than ever before I want to come out a winner this time. Again, thank you for the time you put into these videos. So glad you spoke about raised beds. I have a few health problems and find it extremely difficult to grow in the ground. I've mainly planted perennials in the ground, and made large raised beds for my vegetables. Mine are not as pretty as yours, made them from pallets cut in half, screwed together, lined with cardboard and filled with soil and branches underneath. I have 8 so far, and want to make at least 10 more! Greetings from Tenerife, Canary Islands

I had gulf fritillary caterpillars on my passion fruit vines earlier. They’ve all bounced back and I’ve even gotten fruit…That’s a super full vine - unless you have a swarm of mommas lay eggs, they probably won’t eat much. Super cool to watch them emerge from their chrysalis too!😊

Raised bed gardens are amazing and not everybody has the luxury of good deep soil to do in ground planting. Here in central Texas we have shallow soil where we have soil, with tons of limestone rock. Planting trees is like playing whack-a-mole to find a spot for a deep enough hole. And heading into senior years I wanted raised beds to make gardening easier. We also have to fence in the area to keep the deer out. It’s all about doing what works for you, where you are. I wish I didn’t have to worry about whether my garden has problems because of the soil because I feel that should be a given where I have this drought and heat I can’t control. But going forward I will sample test like you suggest. Thanks for all the info you provide.

People in general make choices everyday about things, for reasons that are personal to their needs. I love that your answers are always about just doing whatever will get you to do something! Our first ever garden in 2020 revealed to me quickly that because of arthritis in my knees and neck, any long term and successful garden outcomes would require raised beds as I wasn’t going to be able to tend to gardens any other way. As well, we realized that for 2021 we needed to expand the garden and the best location for the garden was on the south end of our home where it offered the largest spot that would have the best sun exposure. Problem was, that end of the house was also where the piping ran connecting the septic tank in the front yard to the drain field in the back yard. The last thing we wanted to do was put in raised beds that we couldn’t move (without damaging them or crops inside of them) in the event of an emergency that would require having to dig up any part of that system. We decided to use livestock tanks that we put on pallets. So, if the worse case scenario ever became a reality, we have placed those pallets in a way that we can move them with a tractor. For the most part I’m very happy with our decisions and we expanded it again this year with the addition of 5 more tanks. The greatest perk is I have peace of mind that we won’t lose everything if the septic needs repair because we’ve set ourselves up the best way we know how to physically be able to grow food. AND, I like how it looks too! So, all that to say, thank you for sometimes going against the grain because encouraging people to do what works for them without feeling like they’re not doing it the right way or the most organic way or the most efficient way…etc is the most important thing of all! I realize now that gardens evolve and what you start with your first year of gardening, guaranteed will not be the same the second year etc etc. You are a blessing! Thank you.

This might be my favorite video yet. Just because I have been absorbing your content for a couple of years, started with pots on a deck, bought an urban home with a small backyard, and have my first real garden beginning to produce right now. Thrilled with it, have learned so much! I am 61 so I probably won't be on a farm homestead. I have my tiny urban homestead instead. I live in a place where I can see three other food gardens over the fence. I am blessed to see my neighborhood shared garden down the street. If we all start gardening wherever we are, do what we can to produce our own food, we can stop the corporate takeover of food production and eliminate the toxic practices. I so appreciate how you include everybody in the dream of growing something beautiful. Now I have to learn to cook with it and preserve it. Thank you. I'm in my happy third act of life, giving you some of the credit, I never would have realized how much I wanted this without your content.

Absolutely!-to everything you said about gardening in whatever way you need to garden to provide for yourself & your family! No one should be shaming anyone for getting out there and making an effort to just do their part to get good healthy food. My mom is in a wheelchair and she is going to harvest more from a couple green stalks and containers than most people will out of a full on garden-& what we gain spiritually and mentally gardening can’t be quantified (but it’s worth the price of some store bought compost/soil 😎 )Creators like you and the content you provide are so very helpful for us to just keep honing our craft-just one gardener learning from another👩🏼‍🌾❤️👩🏼‍🌾

I am 66 years old and I have several spine issues an having the raised beds allows me to scoot along on my garden buggy and get my hands dirty. If people give me grief about it , I just tell them, you do you and I will do me! My Blue Lake green beans are growing thick over my cattle panel trellis, but few blooms . this was contaminated soil that I planted corn and sunflowers in, last year . I think the heat is the culprit now! I’m not giving up yet . Take care and God bless y’all !

Thank you for not forgetting what it's like to be in different places in life. Whether it be physical or financial reasons for different kinds of gardens. The garden should always be a place we can come together and worship. I LOVE that you include us all. It's amazing how far this farm has come in a year. I can't wait to see what's next. Have a great day.

We started gardening at a place the was .17 acres of property. We took your guidance and used that place as our first classroom. We managed to grow a 400 sf garden in containers and raised beds. We expanded each season until we couldn't grow anymore.
As we have been here for a little over a year now we have an abundance of land to grow on and started in ground using the no till method since lumber was an arm, leg and a child 😳...
I know I say this each time I see you but we love what you are doing for the homestead and gardening community. Because of you we are the ripple effect in your swimming pool.

Thank you for saying that! Raised beds are necessary if I want to make the best of the limited sunshine I have as is buying in compost. Do your thing everyone, do what works, what you love and don’t waste energy worrying about what others think.

Right now I can maneuver for the most part but everything i m creating for the garden is raised bed, grow bags, greenstalks! I can sit at most. Less weeds, no worries about drain fields / septic systems, kids balls, pets digging or potty breaks! I started most of this when my boys were small and we had our first dog. I do it now because I'm getting older and balance and back are issues. My new addition is drip watering on a timer!!!! While it is over 90 degrees they get watered without my perspiration. 😂 Having been a SPED teacher and loving old people I so value your diversity of options! Thank you.💚💙💜💛😎

Raised beds are great. It is so convenient to have everything at a height that is easy to reach. Most everyone I know that has a in ground garden has terrible weed problems but being that I don’t have to bend over to pick weeds my raised beds are always weed free.

Jess, thank you for addressing the issue of raised-bed gardening and container gardening for people who wish to do so. I do container and raised-bed gardening because I am almost 70 years old and I am physically challenged. I cannot get down onto the ground or get back up again, so raised-bed and container gardening is what I do. Otherwise I would not be able to garden at all. So a big shout-out to you for pointing that out. Besides that, you or anyone should never have to defend their reasons for raised-bed gardening. It's no one's business and they have no right to criticize you for your choices. Blessings and greetings from central Florida!

I really love what you said at the end, and how you always embrace the small space gardener. I am growing my first successful garden which consists of 5 3x5 raised beds, 3 GardenPatch grow boxes, a Greenstalk Leaf, and a couple of random pot. Watching you channel is such an inspiration, and I keep dreaming of my future farm. Thanks so much for all you do!!

I truly appreciate all the raised bed gardening tips & idea’s. My soil is horrendous. 3 inches down and it’s golden sand. The pin oak’s & scrub pine’s grow fine. So do the wild tiny blue berries & fern’s. But everything else take’s hold , grows a couple more inches then nothing. It dries out too fast, drains any nourishment you add and the next season is extra Sandy topsoil from tilling, weeding & hoeing. I will most definitely be filling my raised beds from outside sources because I want produce from my garden lol. 5 acres of dirt and only the dog kennel grows tomatoes & those are tiny. BRING ON THE RAISED BEDS!❤❤❤

Gardening brings me joy and I love raised bed gardening! I appreciate your comments because I've experienced the negative overreaction when I share pictures of the garden. I'm not suggesting everyone should garden this way (I grow some things in the ground) but I won't be changing my ways to suit anyone else 😉

I loved raised bed gardening ! After planting in ground using basic market garden rows for my whole life ..I switched over to growing mainly in raised beds and I love raised bed gardening so much more! I grow more of certain crops by using raised beds . I also just love how raised beds look ...they look pretty and when my garden looks pretty I want to go spend time in it! Its total hosh posh for people to discourage others from using raised beds ..at this point I think every homesteader and gardener just need to be encouraging others to grow something somewhere ! Raised bed, pots, etc...

Lovely garden and lovely commentary. I totally agree. I just want people to grow: On their kitchen window ledges, counters, sides of their stairs, sides of their houses, backyards, front yards, roofs, wherever. Food everywhere should definitely be people's goals. Even just herbs. That is just less that needs to be shipped; less that needs to be spent for better food.

Judgy people are so annoying. I’m so sorry that you are constantly having to explain yourself. If my only option to garden was in-ground, I would not be able to garden. Instead I’m doing my very best with my 1/5 acre back yard and loving every minute of it. It’s my happy place so without it….. not so happy. So thank you Jess so much for all your knowledge and encouragement over the years.

YES...people LOVE telling me what I am doing in my "yarden" is stupid, waste of time, waste of effort, waste of money...and they ONLY grow traditionally tested and traditionally accepted things in traditional ways. I explore every single seed that seems interesting and I do things a little or a lot differently, and every single time I walk around my gardening areas I am thrilled, excited, interested, satisfied, challenged, tested, inspired, hopeful, and my hard cynical personality melts away...so I'll do it my way:)

You are 100% right on about gardening in raised beds. I always thought I couldn't grow food because the way my yard is situated, I cant put inground beds in. BUT, I saw your channel and your Green Stalk planters and got one as a gift this year. let me tell you, I have tomatoes, green beans, peppers and cucumbers galore right now. earlier in the season I had broccoli and radishes. I am growing tons of delicious healthy foods in limited space on my deck. Thank you for teaching and showing us ALL the ways to try gardening.

I absolutely LOVE that you spoke about raised gardening. My nephew PJ who broke his neck 7 year's ago 4wheelin in SC loves his raised garden. His mom and I help with harvesting but he picked the seeds and what he wanted where. Sometimes he'll go missing and we go out on the back deck and there he is just hanging out in his wheelchair in the raised garden out in the back. (He sneaks into the elevator) 😂🤣🤗. As you say, there is something 'very therapeutic' . For him as well as for us watching him especially at home. It's amazing.
