We got a really good tip years ago from a good friend. With respect to peaches, nectarines, and pears specifically, when you have ones that need to ripen up evenly, you lay out a large towel, preferably wool, then line up the fruit that needs to be riper without touching each other, then cover them with another towel or blanket, and leave them for 24 - 48 hours. They will gas each other, and they will All ripen beautifully at the same time, evenly. We’ve done this for many years, and have had really good luck with this process (my wife is 70). We love what you are doing for your farm, and love you and your family. As 13 year Army veterans, we thank you and your husband for your service, as well!

I needed that blessing today. I mentioned to my prayer partner the other day that my tomatoes were not growing. Yesterday and today we have had drenching rain, no wind, and not hard rain, but the soft kind gardeners need. Today, I have multiple new shoots on my tomatoes, and new growth on my basil. I have about 90 days from when I planted them to the end of September, so I'm hopeful that they will produce and I can get them preserved for this winter's food supply. First frost is typically late October, so I should have 3-4 weeks of tomato production before that occurs.

Bell peppers. I just cut into qtrs, removing seeds and membrane. Then put in freezer bags. I cut them up later when I pull them from freezer. Cubes in soups. Strips in fajitas. Leaving peppers bigger makes freezing faster, and leaves options for later.

I have grown a lot of tomato plants from suckers and cuttings and, for me, I have found it's not necessary to start them in water. I literally stick them deep in the ground, or in a pot, either one, and keep them watered and within a week they are growing. Just saves time and steps and I have over 90% success. Heck, I have one tomato plant growing right now from where I had just dumped a few suckers on a pile. I didn't plant or water it and it still rooted, lol. 😀

Great job on the mushrooms! A tip I've learned, to deal with the handles on the buckets damaging my shrooms: Velcro dots or pieces to make straps (the kind with the peel-and-stick adhesive backing) , whichever works best for your particular situation, will keep the handles in place while at rest. I've damaged a lot of shrooms with the handles banging on the side of the bucket, or having to cut them from where they grew around the handle. I NEED those handles to move my buckets, so removing them wasn't an option for me. I get rolls of the Velcro tape and cut what I need as I need it.
I grow extra shrooms to dehydrate, and even can some sauted with garlic and onions. I make a shelf-stable mushroom gravy mix. I also add them to my canned pasta sauces and make a mushroom-based canned "catsup". I've never managed to have so many extras that they went to waste. My largest weekly harvest was 106 pounds. Sounds like a lot, but they cook down or dehydrate to very little. I never actually sold any in great quantity, just gave some to friends and family.

Oh when it comes to fruit flies…put a yellow nat trap all around your fruit boxes…in one day you’ll collect tons of them. I put the cover off one side and then when it fills I flip it over…..I’ve set them on the window sill and trapped so many small flies that are hovering around getting in away from the rain. In the spring it was those beetles that look like lady bugs but are not and stink bugs…caught them by just putting the sticky trap on the window sill.
Had a problem with the potting soil I bought hatched tons of those gnats in my seed trays so I put those trap all around and kept changing when full and finally took care of the problem.

I know how you feel, sweetheart. I, too, got a late start - My son and I got CV 19. Then, we've got record heat in the 100's and drought in the North Florida panhandle. Then, about two weeks ago, we've been getting almost daily rain. The rain is a blessing, but the between the heat, drought, the tomatoes had really bad BER, and now, because of the rain and not being able to spray for pests, the bugs and weeds are taking over. I am getting some usable tomatoes, but I'd say only about 10 or 15% of what I planted - Most are either all stung up or rotting from the bottom up. Maybe next year! Like you, I'm not at all adverse to buying produce from local growers, and I'll have to do more of that to make my yearly canning goal. We just have to be thankful and grateful for what God is blessing us with!

There is a old time homesteading woman who built a log cabin, has a small seed selling business and a great canning cookbook she wrote with lots of personal stories in it. Thats where I always get my jam recipes. Her name is Jackie Clay. Thank you for making us the video. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for the tomato sucker advice. I have about three cherry tomato suckers in a jar in the window of my kitchen with good roots on them. I was going to replace a couple of tomato plants that have pooped out. Didn't think about "up potting" them into a container with soil to help them transition. The weather is so hot here, 90's this week (zone 6a, Cumberland Plateau, TN) Maybe after this week I can plant them.

Oh neat, I've never grown mushrooms on purpose. I'm going to get in gear and try. For surplus mushrooms y'all can dehydrate or freeze dry. And, I guess mushroom tea/coffee is a thing.
PS. I am impressed by the 3 sided cattle panel trellis. Ease of harvesting and pruning. Quite pretty too!

I love watching your channel. I feel like I’m sinking under the weight of gardening this year- everything has been such a struggle-
~deer - inspite of fencing, scare crows, bags, spinners, and repellent have eaten peas and beans and sweet potatoes back to nubs three times.
~Beetles are decimating my beans and making them Lacey skeletons. Tried all the naturals (been, peppermint, soaps, picking them off early morning and evening. I’ve never had them before this year.
~heat- even if the beetles weren’t destroying beans, they aren’t bearing. Blossoms just drop off without beans.

Love that tomato cage idea. Such a lush plant but still access and air flow. Glad you are feeling better. Mushroom market and market for mushroom compost seems to be taking off. I would say you could make it very successful, especially if you sold dehydrated/freeze dried for food and spawn kits.

I LOVE the tomato cage, you allow the tomato to still get good air flow while allowing it to grow to its full potential, great idea for small space gardens where you can't plant many different plants but u have that one strong plant that can get huge!! 😀 yall just keep being creative it's soo inspiring. love you guys and glad you feeling better Jess! I BLESS YOU 🙌🏾 this time 😁

Such the perfect tomato cage! I mean for the ones that are getting only light pruning, none at all, or just flat out got away from you. Looks like it could be installed at any point, vs snapping half the plant apart trying to corral it late from over the top. LOVE the center air flow.
Speaking of snapping tomato plants, I've always just made a finger hole, and stuck the tomato suckers to root directly where I want them. Or some other temporary soil spot. 100% root, unless life happens in a bad way to the human meant to water them! Even some of those survive to thrive, if God is inclined to do some watering.

For the flies in the house… this year we bought an indoor bug zapper and we have zero flies in our house for the first time in a long time. The will get in during the day but at night when everything is dark they go to the bug zapper light and it’s been so nice!

My tomatoes aren't doing well in Michigan, either. The dirt I bought was garbage, and it's too late to do anything. None of my plants look anything like they did last year. It's really disappointing. I'm glad you are feeling better, Jess.
