My dad was always hard on me, pushing me to do good in school. A stark contrast to my mother, she would play this for me on piano. They both died December 16, 1991 in a "car accident". I hope they'd be proud of me and how I'm running the family business.

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember and if you remember
    Then follow, follow
Try to remember the kind of September
That no one wept except the willow
Try to remember the time of September
That dreams were kept beside your pillow
Try to remember the kind of September
When love was an ember about to billow
Try to remember and if you remember
    Then follow, follow
Deep in December It's nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow
Deep in December It's nice to remember
The fire of September that made us mellow
Deep in December our hearts should remember
    And follow, follow, follow...

I often think about the long walks I would take when growing up. I had a special place, an old stream that had a car path but was a great place to "park" when I became a teen. There was a really big pike swimming in the stream that no one had ever been able to hook. At the end of the stream right above the river it was dammed up by a lot of old branches that made a swimming hole. I'd stay there for hours just enjoying the quiet and watching the little fish jump. I remember one time catching about a 1/2 dozen chubs and taking them home for my mother to cook for me. Yeah, I can remember.

We had a very old tree shaped like a Horses back and neck that several kids could "Ride" on at a time ( It would have been an old Native Marker, intentionally bent), I have often hoped that nobody chopped down that Tree overlooking a Bay on a Point that we had..I can still hear the sound of our Summer Place door closing and smell the Kerosene Lamps..I too would spend Hours just exploring and being a kid.. NO Cell Phones, No I pads, plenty of Mosquitoes.. but in so many ways life was far simpler and more enjoyable.. LOL We had NO Electric or Indoor Plumbing by my Grandpa's Choice.. BUT we were "Privileged" as we had TWO Outhouses and a Massive Ice Box... Yuup Those were the Days.

I've heard the same thing before, I've said the same thing before. But, I'm not sure that's really what we'd want when we got older if we never got to live like we were inexperienced young people. They're not smart enough to know the world's not their oyster. So they reach out for things, kind of like that old saying where a person's reach exceeds their grasp. Some of the world's great music and great poetry was written by people before they were 30. When I think about it, sometimes I want to go back and change the rules, too. A lot of times. But, other times I'm kind of glad that my youth was the wild roller coaster ride that could only have occurred if I didn't know any better. I don't know if that makes any sense to anybody. But, there's something I'm trying to explain, and that's the best I can do. Oh, I have strayed from an important point. I do love this song. I do love that it's about looking back at times long gone. There's a video of Jerry Orbach doing the same song, I think it was a carryover from his days on Broadway. It's pretty good. RIP Jerry Orbach. I only knew you from Law and Order, until I saw a video like that here. I didn't know you could sing. You could sure act.

He was 37 and she was 35 years old. My Buddy had a love relationship you'd never seen before. Such love between the two, beyond belief. Just over a year after the beginning of their relationship she developed terminal cancer and was given less than a year to live. What devastation! That being said, their love grew even stronger. On the night she passed away she was in his arms and the background music was playing. As she spoke her last words, "I'll always love you," this song (Try To Remember) started playing. And tears just flowed down our eyes. We have never forgotten this song, which of course reminds of her passing. The Four Brothers...such good music!

Maybe the sad thing is they DO right in this way, and the "geniuses" who decide what will get air play don't play them. So, IMO, across our nation and the world, these sort of songs "will not sell", or so the geniuses have decided. But then someone like say loreena mckennitt comes along and decided she "doesn't buy it" (that the geniuses in he big studios run the world) and she goes out, sells her self made songs, at festivals, small events and so forth until the geniuses decide to "give it a chance". So it still happens, I am glad to report.

How ironic that this song can only be appreciated by those of us who are older. Indeed, youth is fleeting but how fleeting can only be appreciated in later years. Try to remember, yes but getting older has its own glory which should be enjoyed, one day at a time. Those who pine away for their younger years are acting foolishly (although I've done it). Those who are blessed enough to have lived into older age (pick your own definition of that ) should be very thankful for them and appreciate the younger ones but not yearn for them. One day at a time.

I guess this is how I became and antiwar protestor long before most other people were. Eventually though after college I was drafted into the marines. I never believed in the war but I did believe I owed a duty to my country. Too bad when I got out my country never felt a duty to us Vietnam veterans.
