  • I build and install balluster railings in between the 4x4 posts. I space the balusters evenly across the rail using blocks that are figured from my special formula.Check out the notes to get your evenly spaced railings. Also i build a double gate. The gate is used to close off the pool. The gate is installed with hinges and is basically made the same way as the railings.
    Below are all the tools i use and a link to free drawings and material lists of two decks. As a home owner and a do it yourselfer you should have these tools. You will be successful and proud at the end of your deck build and may want to keep them. If you decide this will be your first and last time building, then sell all the tools no less than 75% of what you paid for them. Good luck and you can do it !!!!!!!

    Great to see the math portion of your work. We have so many high school students out there that could benefit from a career in any of the various trades here in the U.S. I would have loved to have someone visit my high school to show me that the geometry, algebra, and basic math skills can apply to a hands-on job rather than shuttled into a 4 year plan for college. Always enjoy your videos!

    Hey Craig! Thank you so much for your quick responses! About to see how much trouble I can get into with the deck this weekend. The wood is supposed to come today but we will be gone for a bit after Thursday for a much needed vaca....so we will see how far we can get with it!!
    About the 4 inch......the z bracket in your video had you putting 2 lag screws (with washers) through the top part (band and 4x4 - one through the bracket and one just through the wood) and then one lag bolt through the bracket and all the way through the post with a washer and nut.... the one I am speaking of is the screw which does NOT have to go all the way through ......I think you used 5in. That particular store I went to to get everything was running low on a lot of hardware so I settled on 4 in instead of 4-1/2 or 5 inch..... now I am just wondering if approximately 2-1/2 inches (remainder of screw after getting through the band) through the 4x4 is enough....The bolt that I got is long enough to get through everything and has room for the washer, lock washer, and nut.
    Thank you so much again for the quick responses. You are the MAN!

    Looks Great. We just replaced our 18’ with a 24’ so it’s time to build a new deck. Trying to decide if I go over the top rail or under. Last deck was over but I had to pull decking on liner changes. I want to be able to use a winter cover so over the rail with 1/2” gap would allow the cover to be put on but I’ll have to pull decking for liner replacement. If I go under the rail or even with top rail I’ll have to leave enough gap between rail and decking for the pool cover.

    quick question about your gate height. My (single) gate is basically the same as yours, but the inspector dogged me for it not being 48" tall. That means my gate would stick up over my railings several inches. How did you get around this? Is this gate to code? I do not understand...Thanks!

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  4 роки тому +1

      When you are having a pool inspected the pool must have at least a 4ft high fence around the yard. If you don't have a fence around the yard the access to the pool has to have a 4ft high gate. In the video there is no access from the yard to the pool. If you don't have a fence around your yard then just build a 4ft high gate.

    Very nice.not sure if you read any of the comments but I have watched all you deck videos and as far as the staining goes you seem to use the cedar tone mostly but the color on this deck looks nothing like the others. Did you use something different? Also early in the video you said the top and bottom measurements may be different for railings. wouldnt that make your bausters crooked if you made them flush?

    Hey Craig! It is P-Dawg again! Trying to wrap this project up. It has been rough only working on it during my free time between work and kids but it's coming along. Wanted to ask you.... in your very first deck around a pool video (not from your 2018 set) you built the gate using 2x6's....in this one you built ir out of 2z4's... is there a reason you changed? I was planning on building the gate ott of 2x6's to match everything let me know when you can. Also... any way to share some pictures with you of my progress?

    Hey Craig! Still have a few questions. What is the longest you would suggest building the rails like this? There was a deck building for beginners of yours that you put dummy posts in to break up the 8foot span. My design has the lists spaced in between 7 and 8 feet apart. Didn't know if that is to far between rail supports. Please reply as soon as you can.

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому

      Well 7ft Rails are the max i go. If posts are 7 or 8 foot apart I use a dummy post in between.

    • @P-Dawg-01
      @P-Dawg-01 6 років тому

      Is that to help with downward bowing in the middle that may occur because of the 7 to 8 foot span?

  • @P-Dawg-01
    @P-Dawg-01 6 років тому

    Very helpful reply Craig. I have been following you and watching your videos for a while. The wife finally got sick of sitting on the ground next to our pool and said let's do the deck. So needless to say I am modeling my deck after yours.
    Where I am still not clear on is I have a load bearing side 27 feet long. I will be cutting 2 - 2x10x14 bands 13'6" and so they will meet at a 4x4 with only 1-3/4 of each band against the 4x4. How do you install the z-bracket over that junction? Or how do you fasten that junction if the z-bracket will not work?
    I will be looking forward to seeing your next video about doubling up the bands. Your videos are both informative and entertaining!

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому

      Thanks dawg !!! im glad to see your not scared, lol. The 2x10s that join on a 4x4 leaving 1 3/4" will recieve a z bracket in the center of the post and joint. you will put a through bolt on the bottom of the post and a lag screw or another through bolt on the top. The second bolt will go between the two 2x10s where they join and then into the post. There are also 4 holes on the top and bottom where galvanized 3" joist hanger nails can be installed.

  • @a.jtabor6855
    @a.jtabor6855 6 років тому

    Good videos Craig. I am wondering why you use 4x4 instead of 6x6? That is code where we live and it's a small town. I love the sanding, it makes a world of difference too!

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому +1

      Well if they use the international residential building code 4x4s can be used up to 60" from ground level before having to use a 6x6

  • @P-Dawg-01

    Hey Craig! What do you do with the Z bracket if you have to 2 2 by 10's sharing a 4 by 4?

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому +2

      Wow excellent question Dawg !!! I do have the answer to that and hope you follow.
      Some front bearing bands will require a double 2x8 or 2x10 to strengthen the span. You would build the structure the same way as per the video using a 2x10 on the outside and then installing the z bracket to the post and band. I then cut a 2x10 to fit inbetween the posts minus a 1/2". The cut 2x10 then goes on the back side of the main 2x10 inbetween the posts. Before you place the 2nd 2x10 to the backside you will install two "hidden 2x10 joist hangers on each end to the post and backside of the 1st 2x10. You then can drop the cut 2x10 into the joist hangers, this is why you cut the 2nd band 1/2" shorter so there is room to fit it in. Then nail the two bands together making sure you put all the nails from the back side so all the nails are hidden.
      I hope this was helpful, and i do have a video coming soon to show you how to double up the bands.

    Love your videos and more importantly your craftsmanship ... I’m going to build a ground level deck 24x28 any advice on post spacing or anything else for that matter?

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому

      Well 24 x 28 is pretty darn big. If 28ft is the length and 24ft is the width then the center beam would be in the center at 12ft. using 2x10 joists 16" on center. Or two beams spaced at 8ft and 8ft using 2x8 for the joists. The beams can always be made as per this video using double 2x8s with the 3 support posts spaced at 7ft apart. All your remaining posts should be spaced no further than 7ft apart around the perimeter. In some cases you will have to double up the bearing 28ft bands that carry the weight of the joists. The 24ft side bands would not have to be doubled since they are not weight bearing.

  • @P-Dawg-01
    @P-Dawg-01 6 років тому

    Ok! Awesome! That clears that up on the Z-bracket....no not scared. I am extremely anal about stuff though so it usually takes me a little longer to get a project done. Seriously if you were closer to Ohio I would have you build it! Lol!
    We just dug all the holes 31 of them to be exact and now we are getting what is left of the recent hurricane. So all the holes are covered with wood but it is still a muddy mess. Can't stand the initial stages of buolding a deck or a fence. The holes can never be perfectly lined up sp there will have to be some rounding out of those before I can put in the footers. I got my hardware and for the lag bolt they didn't have 1/2 by 5 or 4.5 so I had to go with a 4inch lag bolt which I think is long enough to go through the 2x10 and the 4x4. But don't know if I should take the extra trip to get larger when the restock. Any thoughts?

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому

      Whats up Dawg,
      Those 4" through bolts are not long enough to go though. You need to add 1" to the thickness of what your going through in order to get the washer and nut on. If you are using a through bolt on a 2x10 and a 4x4 you would need to at least get 6" or bigger.
