    I built a pool noodle holder out of PVC…just a rectangular cube. I spray painted it to match my patio furniture. I’m going to do that when I build this and add the top last. Great tutorial! Well done.

    Brilliant. For the towel rack/hose holder, just make the vertical supports furthest from the pool the same as the ones closest but use 4-way tees instead of 3-ways so you can add two holders to each vertical support. Add a 45 at the end of each holder curled upwards to hold the towels on also. This is awesome. Thanks for the sweet video!

    That picture at 1:16 probably saved me an hour on the project thanks for the great video! Love the acrylic but I went with a 1" pine shelf with a beveled edge for $8 instead of the acrylic because my lowes didn't have it... After stain it still looks and works great. Thanks again

      @@JDee7 That's a great idea! Thank you! I'm adding a cross tee to replace the tee on both outer corners so that I can hang towels on it. I have everything cut and ready to put it together! I also decided to cut the 29" pieces in half and join them with a coupling, that way I won't have to add a washer! I'm hoping to get it put together tomorrow. After it's together I'm thinking of staining the pvc! This will be such a nice addition to our pool. Thank you again!!!

    I was floating around my pool today and thinking, "Man, I wish I had a place to put my drink." I knew someone had to think of this before me. Thank goodness for the internet. I would recommend, for a more professional finish, to paint the frame with Plastidip before attaching the top. It would cover all the markings on the PVC and you can pick a color that best suits your pool.

      All the markings and writings etc can also can be clean off with just regular Mineral Spirits IF you want to keep the frame white.

      Yes mineral spirits WILL remove the printed on ink on the PVC, I was a painter for over 25 years and would clean PVC before painting etc using Mineral spirits. Thank you!

    Things I learned from this wonderful tutorial:
    Pay attention to your measurements. When he says 2 inches he does not mean 2 1/2 ( That's where the frustration started!) Somehow I cut all of those pieces two and a half I couldn't get anything to match.
    When measuring your crossbars measure from the insides of your pool posts not the outside and then subtract an inch or two. And remember to include the T measurements.
    I did not attached the top table piece which was a good thing because I was re doing this constantly.
    And the last thing is keep an eye on all of your parts because when your pit bull decides he wants to take them and hide them it gets really frustrating when you know you cut them and they disappear.
    I'm sure for people who are knowledgeable with PVC and what not this made so much more sense. However this is the 1st time I've ever attempted anything with PVC and as frustrating as it was the author was tremendously helpful and I came back and remeasured and found my problem and everything was smooth sailing.
    At last but not least I am not a fan of Lexan and/or anything else that is Too clear 2 shiny 2 slick. I actually have on order a poly ethylene cutting board. It is textured and almost the same size for $26. The edges will already be smooth and rounded out and none of our cocktails will slide off of it! And less than a 3rd the cost. And I got it in a color, not just clear or white.
    Thank you for all your assistance. It turned out well however I haven't glued it altogether yet So there's still time for me to jack it up!
    Next I'm going to attempt stairs for inside the pool. That oughta be a hoot

    There are so many configurations of uprights on these pools that you would have to customize the shelf to some degree. I hope it worked out for you in the end. The measurements I have in the video are exactly what I needed and worked for this example.

    I started making this shelf Friday and finished it today after church with some help from my family members. One of the legs that goes over the railing is a little crooked but it still works fine. My lexan did crack at one of the screws but it is ok. That stuff is not cheap. Next year we are getting a larger pool so I will try the thicker lexan. Thank you for this video it is the second project I've worked on with pvc pipe. Now just waiting for the next project to come along.

    Thanks for the video, I am making three this week. The towel holder is a great idea, but I don't need it as I made a towel rack. I am using a two three way "T" on the top ends this will eliminate one two elbows and two "T". (A tips) Also if you cut a coupling in half these halves could be placed in the center to support the plexiglass as you screw it.. This way it won't bow in the center

    Done. I messed it up though. When I glued the cross beams that you screw the top onto I could not get the bottom level and it created an issue with leveling it on the pool. I then cut the 2 beams in half and used 2 couplers to join it back together. It worked out great and now I don't need the washers to hold the top up since the couplers make it all level across. I also painted it with gray plastidip. Looks great. The Lexan was pricey. To get a good thickness for this job it was about $60. I went thinner, but am not happy with the quality.

  • @shanewarren910
    @shanewarren910 6 років тому +10

    You should use couplings in the center of the two longer pieces on top. That way it is the same height as the edges and you dont need to find correct side washers. The plexi should probably have some guards on the edges so it is not sharp and cuts someone. If there was a way to eliminate screws to maintain a flat surface that would be best. Maybe compress the top on with threaded fittings. I also agree that glue is not essential on all the joints.

  • @scottkaribaderman6628

    Not sure if it was already mentioned, but an added feature if you didn’t just want a clear shelf is to adhere peel and stick linoleum faux wood planks. You can get water resistant ones. Adds a little character.

    Thanks for the great video, just finished mine. Only suggestion is the fittings are cheaper if you buy the contractor packs.
    This gives you extra Ts to add to the center of the 29 inch sections to stiffen and level the lexan.

      I completed the frame in about 3 hours today. The top took longer because I had to wait for the glue to dry on the rigid vinyl plank. I went with Velcro as well, thinking I can remove the top in bad weather. Don’t know how the rvp will hold up but it’s easily replaced. Overall it is excellent. It will work perfectly. Lessons learned: I didn’t really account for the weight of the rvp so the shelf was set at level without the top and it moved a bit when I set the top on it. Not much tho. Still looks great! I’m hoping it serves me well for years to come. Thanks very much for posting this excellent idea.

      I have the segmented hoses that I use on my pool vacuum. I'm always trying to drape them over something to keep them off the ground so they stay clean. I currently put the end of my pool broom (on the pole) with the bottom end on the ground and the vacuum or broom end balanced again the side of the pool. I then drape the hoses over that - kind of in-between the vacuum or brush - over the pole but toward the inside of the pool. make sense? but I try to do it far away enough from the skimmer that it doesn't interfere with the water going toward the skimmer.

    Great tutorial, what is the thickness of the lexan you use? How much thicker can you go without adding to much weight to the shelf?

  • @stainlessdonkey
    @stainlessdonkey 7 років тому +2

    It's a great idea and I like your level of detail but I think for someone else they could probably get away with not gluing any of the joints. A rubber mallet to tighten the joints after the initial test fit and dry run would suffice 90% of the time for this. The Lexan could also be attached with double sided tape instead of drilling.

    Using velcro sounds like a good idea. I made this last year but my plexiglass cracked. And that stuff isn't cheap. I will have to make another one this year because I'm getting a new pool this year and it is steel and resin with the wider tops on the wall of the pool. I will need to get new measurements of the new pool tops tho. It is so nice to be able to have your eyeglasses, drinks or whatever within reach. Is there something else you can use besides plexiglass?

    • @JDee7
      @JDee7  5 років тому +2

      One watcher suggested using a cutting board. They make a lexan/plastic type in all different sizes. It's thicker and won't crack under pressure or drilling.

  • @HostileHST
    @HostileHST 9 років тому +3

    Drill with the drill in reverse and it helps to not crack the plexy or whatever you use.

    I bought everything and am nervous about doing this. I am confused and wished I could see the tape measure numbers. I have the same exact type of pool, except mine is NOT Intex but Coleman. I measure it and not sure if you go from OUTSIDE the pole or inside the pole/legs of the pool. I want to do this but not sure what to do bc my pool looks the same and have watched the video a few times

    • @JDee7
      @JDee7  5 років тому

      If the pool is the same size the portion of the video ( time 1:12) that shows the piece dimensions should be fine. The visual aid with the numbered measurements is the actual shelf flattened out. Be sure to measure the top rail that goes all around for the thickness to be sure the top most pvc piece connected to the pool is wide enough. I hope this helps.
