  • We're tasting Bushmills Prohibition Recipe, a lovely blended whiskey from Northern Ireland. This is a new release commemorating the final season of Peaky Blinders, a Netflix drama. The characters are particularly fond of Bushmills in the show. This bottling comes in at 92 proof, which is an outlier for Bushmills releases and if you enjoy Bushmills, this is a Must Buy!
    Five minute review of Bushmills Prohibition Recipe Irish Whiskey from the Old Bushmills Distillery, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. General info about the product and distillery as well as a quick tasting. Cheers!

    Sitting here drinking it now. Last week I drank a bottle of whiskey that was double the price (writers tears) and I actually like this one better also I like the design of the bottle with Tommy Shelby on it. I’ll know more in the morning which one I like overall.

      I appreciate the higher proof which gives it more of a backbone. I'm a fan of writer's tears copper pot, but this is definitely better. Thanks for watching!

    Love this one, it's a hard to categorize spirit in my opinion, being a young, higher abv Irish aged in... bourbon barrels? Kind of an odd idea to me, but given the flavor for the price it's nothing to sneeze at. I mean the next best Irish is what Green Spot? That's like double the price where I am. Not sure why but this reminds me of another hard to categorize whiskey I love, Michter's American, which is essentially a bourbon but they age it in used bourbon barrels and it rockets it to something beyond anything falling under the classification of "bourbon" I've ever had that are even 3-4x it's price. Then again Michter's American is lower abv and harder to find. I'll have to pick up a bottle to compare how I feel about these two now. Either way definitely worthy to spend the money for couple ounces of this neat, or heck even just with some coke and a meal, it elevates a standard whiskey/bourbon mix drink. Cheers.

      Thanks for watching! The majority of Irish whiskey and Scotch (and aged rum) are aged in used bourbon barrels because they're plentiful and cheap compared to building new oak barrels or sourcing wine/fortified wine casks. Even some Green Spot is aged in bourbon barrels while some is aged in sherry casks before blending.
      As for this whiskey, Prohibition is great for the price. I appreciate the higher abv because, as you said, it's a youthful spirit and it needs the proof. Otherwise it would probably be a pretty flat experience.
      And Michter's American is a phenomenal whiskey! Highly underrated and almost in a category on its own.

    They need to keep this line. Call it Peaky or whatever. Keep the damn juice on the market. It’s the best of both worlds: Bourbon and Irish whiskey

      It has a high single malt percentage (80%) and high percentage aged in Sherry barrels. It's a great value!

    I saw this for the first time today. It's the same price as red and about $10 cheaper than black. may buy a bottle the next time I go to the city but if it's not on par with black it will likely be a one time try.

      If you like sherry casked whiskeys, this might not meet your expectations, but it is definitely superior to Bush original. Very different from the heavily sherried Black Bush, which is another bottle I love.

      It was released in June or July of this year. Some states might not get it. Didn't come to Ohio until September. Worth tracking down if you like Bushmills

    Unless someone can tell me differently, Bushmills did not produce Blended Whiskey during the Prohibition era. I guess the flavor profile is inspired?

    • @TheBarleyLads
      @TheBarleyLads  11 місяців тому

      Certainly only an inspiration. This is mostly marketing, but I appreciate the added proof and non chill filtering. This is what Bushmills Original should be.

      Bushmills in fact only produces single malt and has never produced grain whiskey for their blended whiskeys. They source it all from Midleton (home of Jameson).

      @@TheBarleyLads Maybe they should've used more youthful versions of their malt whiskeys. Even a three year old malt, aged in ex-Bourbon barrels, would've been better than what they used to use back then. In the Prohibition era, there was no rule that said an Irish whiskey had to be aged for any minimum length of time.

    I really wanted to like it since it's a higher abv Irish whiskey but it's just not for me. I really wish there were more Irish whiskey options above 80 proof without breaking the bank.

    • @TheBarleyLads
      @TheBarleyLads  9 місяців тому

      This has been my biggest complaint about Irish since I got into them a few years ago. Not enough mid tier bottlings available in the US. Seems like a ton of sub $40 @80° or $100+ for anything over 92°. Writers Tears Cask Strength just came available in Ohio. $169. Hard pass.

    • @TheBarleyLads
      @TheBarleyLads  9 місяців тому

      I would recommend Powers Three Swallow if you haven't had it. Usually around $40-45, single pot still (not blended), and 86.6°. Not a huge ABV increase but noticable. And a great value. Teeling is another company that bothers at 92° and aren't outrageously priced.

      Odd comment or attempt at a joke. The show is filmed exclusively in the UK. And every review we do covers the backstory/history of the whiskey along with a review of it. Hope you stuck around past the 20 seconds where I talk about the show for which this was created. But we appreciate that you took the time to comment regardless.
