I turned 65 on Feb 25th 2022. I started playing bass at age 16. I stopped playing for 18 years when I joined the military. I started playing again after I retired from the military. I soon realized that I could hear and understand music much better than when I was a young cat. I've been in a band for about two years now and see the same mistakes happening with this group as in my first group. Our leader is an agent orange Viet Nam veteran and he is a music major. I think he just wants to play until it's time to go to the promised land. We have worked on a number of nice-sounding, originals but nothings ever gotten finished. I am also working with a long-time friend from back in the day. He is talented and produced a jazz album. He and I are working on gospel music now. God gave me two songs to put in his hands. I know nothing about how gospel songs are created but he does and he is very excited by what came to me at 3 a.m. as I was about to go to bed. I don't want to play live gospel. I like playing music in a band but dealing with egos is something I am tired of. I wish that I had someone to teach me music at a young age. I salute you.
Please let me say, your channel is awesome, simply awesome. Short version of a long story. I am "mature " in age only. A fee yeara back there was a need to tackle the bass within me. Covid slammed the door on me. You have reignited a sense of " this must be learned " within me. Your presentations are so musically tasteful. Thankyou l.
Thank you for so much knowledge! You answer all the question that I always had in my head, but didn't have anyone I could ask. Now I would ask you one: There's a rule to play chord tones on downbeats (1 and 3). My question is: does this rule apply to other (from jazz, blues) genres of music? Thank you for these videos! Tom
Great video Paul. Looking forward to the next installment and will share this with students. Suggestions for another video: walking bass for other instruments. Any mistakes you hear guitarists, pianists, etc. making when they walk for another soloist? All the best.
Your videos have been so helpful for someone who doesn’t have a jazz bass teacher
This channel is Bass University, not only useful to bassists, but also to songwriters, awesome stuff!

I think it depends on the groove. Quarter-note driven walking lines (like in Jazz) tends to have this aspect in the bass. Thank you for watching!
@@pdbass Thank you for fast reply! It already gives a direction for me :)

Noted--TBH, other instrumentalists usually do it really well! Bassists tend to forget the golden rule: K.I.S.S.
