    When you say play a fret above do you mean a whole step above/below or a string above/below?

      Musicians tend to mostly talk in terms of pitch. So one (a) fret means one half step (not a whole step - that would be two frets). Above means higher in pitch (so towards the bridge). Hope that helps.
