I tried to explain this same thing to musicians in the house bands on cruise ships, but they just didn't get it. They thought because they went to berklee that they could swing better than than world class musicians
I taught myself to play the electric bass when I was a teenager. Never took a lesson. Never really learned to read music, but my ear is on point. I can pick a song apart note for note and learn it. Or should I say I used too. Life got in the way and I had to sell my gear, and never picked it back up again. I just enjoy hearing you groove, and learning about jazz theory. Bird turned my whole musical world upside down.
Your channel is like a hidden gem! Im actually a guitar player but your lessons make me wanna pick up my bass guitar more often :) Have a good one! Cheers from Sweden!
Gracias hermano vivo en Cuba y no es difícil encontrar buen material para la música americana gracias por poner su talento al servicio de nosotros un abrazo
Thanks for including the clip of Mr. Hump Hellion himself, Ray Brown, in this discussion! Paul Chambers,NHØP, Miroslav Vitous, Ron Carter, Buster Williams, George Duvivier, Milt Hinton, Dave Holland...The list of Hump Masters is endless! Have you or your students tried walking a bass line to a metronome clicking on 1 and 3? It's an interesting exercise...Anyway, thanks for posting this discussion of jazz rhythm...
Great Jazz pedagogy from a double bassist's perspective - and music in general! (If you'd change your channel's output to distorted Rock guitar lessons your views/likes would quadruple tenfold! DON'T!)

It's rhythm that is the factor in any musical evolution. How come no one thought of playing straight 8ths before 1950? That changed everything. As for jazz, it's rhythms have absolutely nothing to do with Africa. It s roots stem from marches which are strictly European.
Yes love to learn from you

That lengthening instead of accenting thing is good, it kind of makes it feel like the 2 and 4 are pushing ahead
Mingus was a master of this!

man that was probably one of the best lessons I've gotten in such a short amount of time, thank you sir !
Now I'm hooked!
So used to playing " on the one". This changes things a lot. Thank you for expaining it so well. I feel it!
Those old Oscar Peterson records, with Ray Brown, are great for this. They swung so hard.
I really liked this lesson - makes an awful lot of sense.
Excellent, thanks again 🙏
Simple by powerful idea. Like it!
I love the lesson and the music! You explain things so well and your delivery is easy on the listener. Your students are very lucky.
thanks for sharing your knowledge, this is really well explained.
Another great video. I'm glad I got back to the "beginning" of your lessons. The use of recorded examples really helps me to understand the concepts.
5:38 “more of a lengthening”…I found that very helpful
Stay safe and love your neighbor, great end of the lesson:)

Oh yeah. I try to go everywhere--every beat, on/off the beat, every other bar, etc.
@@pdbass yes👍🏽
It kinda shocked me when you said Geddy Lee was the reason you picked up a bass. I was under the impression you were schooled in jazz from the start.
Besides Moanin Could you recomend some of the record where this thing is obvious?

Really dig your explanation of the Hump! Love the end with Ray Brown, perfect example. What's the bass you're using? Looks and sounds beautiful.
Thank you! I play a '72 Pollmman with Spirocore Weichs. The ultimate setup from 1984!
Good stuff, glad found you (through Jason Heath) - I play DB tuned in 5ths and very helpful tips.
Don't take my word for it! "Father Time" himself... 7:24-7:26 I made "the face"
What is that on the head of your bass? It looks like a kind of string extender or something?
