a .45 and about 10 ft. of distance.. I've got 40 years experience in all this mess-- in jungles, in gangland areas, and military all over-- and it doesn't matter HOW freakishly good you might be-- in a knife deal- you WILL GET CUT-- I've been in several involving a knife- and I survived and WON-- but YES I still got cut. I'm not talking legalities-- if that person has a knife- and you're empty hand- you are justified-- PERIOD. Forget the damn law-- you can get out of jail easier than you can get out of a 6ft. hole!!!

90% of knife attacks, the attacker grabs to get leverage.
I could see Kevin was itching to grab a few times.

I liked that the grip is not on the wrist but on the hand itself. Focusing on the wrist, as mentioned, does not limit the rotation of the hand and therefore the knife can still cut you. This mistake is quite common in general teaching of self defense against knives when "instructors" only half learn the technique and think that's how they should teach it.
I also liked the emphasis on mobility and hitting rather than just control. Those have always seemed underrated to me. That is, if you have the opponent under control and within reach, what stops you from attacking the face, the eyes, for example?
    Excellent video.

Very consistent to almost all who teach kali... run, escape or evade. Very true. Engaging only happens on very specific situation where one could not evade, run or escape. Even then, the next option is truly to get another weapon. And if all else fails, only then you apply the techniques in close combat.

Absolutely love this. It's not fancy. Evade, getting off the line, the stun, this is all solid information. When you see these fancy disarms or people charging in grappling, they're going to be in the ER if they're lucky enough to make it that far. Distance and timing and actually practice this ish. And most importantly carry an equalizer a gun or knife yourself, unarmed knife defense is a fast track to the cemetery.

Love Sifu Danny Terrel! He is far and away the best instructor I've ever worked with. In his classes, he has such a keen sense for when he can turn a drill into a limit-testing, humbling moment. We were working some wrestling drills, a mount escape, I think. Sifu shut my escape down and simply put his hands on my throat--not an especially effective attack. But, at that point in my training, I wasn't able to respond to the visceral stress response and completely failed to defend myself. He knew he could (safely) present that test, going off the script, and gave me the chance to humble myself.
To this day, I remember (with confidence) many ways to escape that (admittedly ineffective) attack. Collapsing the arms, levering one arm at the elbows...
Such a knowledgeable teacher with an incredible eye for testing limits and facilitating breakthroughs.

Good video, and lots of good common sense information. My only added information would be utilize what's in your environment to not only create and maintain distance, but also create obstacles and barriers helping you maintain distance; or see what is available to turn into an improvised combative tool, that would allow you to damage their arms (thus they lose the ability to hold and utilize the weapon), their legs (thus they lose the ability to close distance), and of course their head (thus by becoming unconscious or at least disoriented (thus they lose the ability to continue the attack fully, or at least continue the attack effectively). Hence giving you increased chances to get away.

That was pretty awesome hell yeah and yes an attacker with or without a weapon is dangerous and it's scary people may not want to admit it but training is one thing having fun on all that but when somebody seriously wants to hurt you for real it makes you feel different you move different you breathe different because now you understand I'm in danger even if it's just beating getting beat up or just getting punched once or twice you don't know what those hits are going to do what they're going to do after those hits so it is scary

  • @nightshade7240

Here is a slightly different question. Do you think the mentality of "self defense" is wrong? So much of what is taught as self defense is a reactive mentality. "if the opponent does this then you do this" kind of choreography almost. Is it not better just to learn to fight and the combatives that go along with the mentality you develop from knowing how to fight?
My interest (because so few people train it) is the unorthodox techniques with the pikal blade indexing. I understand why the orthodox techniques are always shown but as someone who has trained in that pikal style, I wonder how these techniques would need to be altered to compensate to combat someone who uses that style. Also his methods and understanding are brilliant and you are really good at interviewing and giving people room to demonstrate, so kudos to you.

The reason grappling arts like wrestling or Jiu jitsu touch on knife defense( If it’s not the usual Jiu jitsu self defense ) is because people who willingly attack people with knives usually grab you. If that person knows how to grapple and you don’t, you’re not gonna create distance. That’s why they “fight the knife”. It’s not about where you wanna be with an armed person, it’s about where they put you. Create distance from any physical altercation, that’s self defense. Learn to fight, that’s combat sports.

None of that is any good with a trained knife fighter, your gonna get cut. But your move backed up against the wall was better. Don’t ever assume a person with a knife don’t know how to use it. And whatever happened to low kicks, a leg break will slow him down, but the knife welder can kick you while your trying to control the knife hand. Speed is everything, and lots of training. I’ve got 68 years in the arts and I still train.

I am no fan of kali, but what he said was just right. A lot of MMA (jiujitsu guys) think that grappling is much more effective in the real world. In all honesty, Jiujitsu is good in 1 on 1 but you can grapple 2 to 3 opponents all at the same time, and I think having a martial arts like Kali can actually be effective in multiple attackers, then again use kali not the traditional arts but try to incorporate different styles that is more pragmatic rather than looking fancy.

Same thing with teaching, The art is not what makes it a "Mc Dojo", it's the teacher.. There are no bad students, only bad teacher's.. That applies to life in general, with your own life, kids, pets, work, etc.. Bjj isnt for bringing street fights to the ground, but for helping you get up when you are forced to the ground. Kali is a synonym for eskrima, arnis, baston, yantok, etc - they are all the same group of martial arts. Whether the training is practical or not is up to you and your instructor, but best to know the difference between facts, opinions, and myths.

The traditional ones are deadlier. Probably you are referring to the 'modernized', newer ones that adds fancy moves to attract students for $$. The old/traditional ones are effective in guerilla warfare that is why it was respected by those who know and is taught to US and Philippine special forces and marines because of the proven effectivity in real life situations.

@@antondelacruz9362 the only problem is that icy Mike say some of bjj practitioner WOULD bring a fight to the ground instead of using it as last line of defense.

filipino martial arts can be fancy. that fanciness is just part of the learning, and part of the training. just train with pressure as it stops turning fancy after you've practice it with real scenarios

The way i see most kali systems is basically fencing with knives, all about keeping distance and maintaining control while trying to dish out punishing attacks, the second you get close thats when your going to get cut almost no Matter what

if you know your weapon well, even a kali on a knife fighting wont be effective, kali will give you a time to survive, until you found a weapon equal to your opponent or above the level of what he is using.
