Germany's Hidden Gem! This is Lüneburger Heide (+ an incredible barefoot park)

  • Our final leg of our summer van trip takes us to Lüneburger Heide! No, we never really had this high on a bucket list when we first made it to Germany, but many of you recommended paying a visit that we decided to do just that. The heath bloom was beautiful to see, and timed quite well with our travel itinerary. Although the area is much to big to explore in just a day or two, we still loved our experience walking and riding through the outdoor nature preserve and seeing such a unique are in Germany.
    Did you also know there is a very large barefoot park as well? We had never heard of these type of parks before our time in Europe, but we loved visiting the Barfußpark Lüneburger Heide in Egestorf! Walking through mud, glass, grass, and rocks was a fun experience for us all and a happy coincidence that we stumbled upon it.

    So sad to hear you're leaving! On the other hand - understandable.
    Thank you for all the awesome videos about Germany and its diversity, the regions, the food. And thank you for (by your travels) blowing up most of the stereotypes foreigners may have concerning Germany.
    I also want to thank you for all the joyful vibes your videos brought to my living room, either made in Germany or our neighbour countries you travelled to!
    I hope you will continue to tell about your upcoming experiences - where ever you 4 will make them. Take care, stay safe and have a good time!

    My wife and I have been living about 15 to 20 kms from the area you visited since moving here in 1996. It really is among the most beautiful places of Germany (unless you insist on either beaches or mountains), and it's always worth a Sunday stroll with friends. We also visited the "Barfußpark" (Barefoot Park) a few years ago and enjoyed it even without children of our own. Glad you featured the place in your video, it definitely deserves it!

    Good morning!!
    So you can see that there are still a lot of things to explore in Germany, perhaps one day the Mecklenburg Lake District with its fantastic nature from a houseboat. There is a lot to discover, cute little towns and some still untouched nature on the water , on land and in the air. Or the spa park in Bad Kötzting, one of the largest parks in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria.

    My home and Heimat :)))) Growing up there is living in nature heaven :) the Lüneburger Heide used to be much much bigger but was deminished by deforrestation which is not bad for nature of course, but if the remaining parts werent protected early enough, nothing of what you see there would have survived...

    So cute! You couldn't understand all the coachman was saying because of his accent.... only he didn't have any accent at all like most people in Niedersachsen! 🙂 So your ears are more trained now to your local accent of German from where you are living than to general normal High German. Pause for thought, eh? - All the best to you!

      indeed he had a northern accent, you wouldn't hear people speaking like him in other parts of Germany.
      Maybe he switched into Low German from time to time, in the northern part of the "Lüneburger Heide" there are quite a lot native speakers, it is a very rural area though.

    Although it is a little sad that Willa will probably lose her bilingual skills now, I hope that you will find a nice new place near your relatives and enjoy your future life.
    Three years ago, UA-camr colleague Andrew Smith also left Grafenwöhr and Germany. He made a special video about his thoughts and feelings at the time entitled “Goodbye Germany - What I loved and learned”. I would recommend checking it out since it was just filmed in your area.

I checked, and the US government has an enormous number of bases around the world, so presumably any site could be your next home. I wonder whether it will be in Europe or further afield. Lüneburger Heide is famous for another reason. On 4th May 1945 it was there that General Field Marshall Montgomery accepted the unconditional surrender of the German forces in the Netherlands, northwest Germany including all islands, in Denmark and all naval ships in those areas.

    • @heindaddel2531

    Why is there the "Lüneburger Heide?" It used to be a forest. Why was the forest cut down? The wood was needed. What for? For the extraction of salt by salt boiling of salt water, which was extracted from salt water springs. Why was salt needed? To season food? Of course not. Centuries ago salt was so precious because it was used to preserve fish and meat.
    At that time there was no refrigerator ;-)

    The Lüneburg Heath is not a natural park, it is an industrial wasteland.
    Since the Middle Ages, the continuous forest has been completely cut down (mainly for salt production) and the forest floor has been washed away by rain, leaving nutrient-poor soil in which only a few plants can thrive. (birch and heather)
    An example of how humans have almost completely destroyed nature.

    • @henner7371
      @henner7371 Рік тому +3

      yes and it has to be well maintained, because otherwise it would become a forest area. I live in the north of the "Lüneburger Heide" and centuries ago we had as much heath until the land was cultivated mostly in the last 150 years. A few years ago the last 2 or 3 acres of heath vanished in our region.

    It is and always will be your decision. But you could tell right from the start that you didn't really feel comfortable in Germany. Since you are now going to another country, the subscription no longer makes sense. There is a difference between living in a country and just visiting...

    • @OurStorytoTell
      @OurStorytoTell  Рік тому

      There were a lot of new things to learn and get used to here in Germany, but we honestly can say we absolutely love our life here in Germany. We do feel comfortable here. The only thing stopping us from staying longer is our new job opportunity, our desire to explore other parts of the world, and our family not being close by. We always talk about how if our family lived in Germany ( or Europe for that matter), we would live here permanently.
      As for the subscription, it doesn’t make sense for someone specifically wanting current Q&A videos about what we are doing and how our life in Germany is. However, we will still be doing Q&A videos and sharing all the same info we do, just in our new location. We never want anyone to feel pressured to join though. 😊 Its just for those who want to!
