- I finally watched Madame Web for myself. Here's my review of one of the worst movies I've ever seen, which is now on my ever-growing list of regrets.

I love Dakota's response to this film. She owned up to sucking, and at the same time pointed out how smart the fans are for calling out this level of crap in film and tv, while at the same time she pointed out that Hollywood execs feel the opposite. The execs think the fans are stupid. So i say kudos to Dakota here for saying what most of Hollywood won't.

She was the worst part. She blamed the script when most of it was as her acting.

Making spider-man movies without the web-head (and yes that includes Venom) was a massively stupid idea.

That's not even the issue though. They're all shit quality. We'll never know how they would be perceived if they were actually good.
@@jskrabac I’d argue it’s at least a contributing factor, particularly by means of making them utterly meaningless. Sure Kraven could probably get away with having his own film whereas it doesn’t work for Madam Web, and for Venom it definitely doesn’t work precisely because he (or they?) is directly tied to Spider-Man. The fact that they suck bigly doesn’t help of course, which I’ll agree with definitely.

SONY wants to reproduce the Joker movie, only using the most interesting figures from the 900 character Spiderman roster they control the rights to. Joker proved you could take a villain and do a hit movie without the superhero in it. SONY is so far forgetting the part about having a strong script, and a strong actor to pull it off. All they appear to see is the money potential, as in 10 or more franchise trilogies they could do with well-selected villain leads.
It probably didn't help that Johnson has stated that when she got to set she found the script was not the one she had signed on for, that probably took any enthusiasm out of her sails. Tahar Rahim's French accent was so strong that they had to redub his lines in post to make them understandable. They also hired the writing team from Morbius, but then S J Clarkson, the director, weighed in to help with the script. So yeah ... Sony should of just taken the tax break and written it off, like WB did with Batgirl.

To be fair, Dakota probably signed on to a very different movie and as such gave up while honouring her contractual obligations with the bare minimum required enthusiasm after the script had been cut to shreds, discarded, rewritten and re-edited several times by a Sony committee led by Amy Pascal.

By far the worst piece of dialogue was “when you accept responsibility, great power will follow”. It had me squirming in my seat.

Yo Jay I finally watched The Crow 1994 right after your upload yesterday! 🐦⬛ I rented it on UA-cam and it was surprisingly uncensored. It's admittedly a hard watch at the beginning, but everyone loves a good redemption story. I liked the editing a lot, nothing seemed confusing, and I LOVED the music! I initially planned to watch this with friends on a movie night, but I decided to just drink a bottle of wine and watch it by myself, and I think that enhanced the experience because I wasn't distracted away from the music or the really calming moments where the crow flies over the city. all around a great movie, and it makes me want to watch more films that I've been missing out on.

In the comics even though her mom is Mexican, Araña’s is Puerto Rican cause her dad is too so she isn’t supposed to fear deportation. Plus Araña was born in NY. This is what we get when people that don’t read the comics write the movies
In my alternate universe, mexico is a city state that part of the United States. The United States consists of our real USA (but without Hawaii and Alaska), Canada, Mexico, and the greater Antilles. So any Mexican wouldn’t be deported. The Mexicans in my universe hate people from central and South American countries. And are more xenophobic than the gringo counterparts are.

I can save you! Given the context of it basically being a reboot of Brandon Lee's The Crow with Eric Draven, watch The Crow when it comes out and you'll probably see Madame Web as a masterpiece of cinema. Of course, you'll have a mental breakdown from watching The Crow but I can't solve all your problems!

If it helps, watch season 3 of the 90s Spider-Man animated series which introduced Madame Web as she truly is. Maybe “South Park: Into the Panderverse” too.
Great and entertaining review, Jay. I think Madame Web is the prime example of a corporate movie--made solely for the reason of having a license that's squeezed to its maximum for profit with no passion either from the studio or the filmmakers.
I predict that Kraven will do slightly better but still flop.
Spiderman's villains only work WITH Spiderman--they compliment each other. By themselves, they're B to C movies with little (fan) appeal.

A seven minute rant about Madame Web! I am relatively new to your channel and also watched the movie. I have to say, I politely disagree. I thought Madame Web was an underrated triumph of a super hero film. I thought the action was realistically great, the acting superb, the plot tight and surprising, and world building sublime. In fact, it’s a darn shame that there won’t be a sequel because it would have been even better given the many lingering morsels of tasty Easter eggs they didn’t get to in the movie. In fact…..no. No, no. I just can’t. It was a truly atrocious movie. I said these things to try to provide a counterpoint to your comments but my soul, which hid while I watched the movie, recently returned and won’t allow me to say any more fake good things about this. You are right. It was bad. The end.

The glasses takeoff bit was gold! As someone who grew up in the 80s, I can't watch Dakota Johnson without visualizing her father in classic Miami Vice episodes like, "Definitely Miami."

WAY funny! this is one of your very best rants! So glad I saw this first. So in the movie I almost turned it off after the diner scene. These girls KNOW someone is out to kill them, SO THEY DANCE ON TABLES? SO idiotic! I HATE when the actors just throw the plot out the window and do something they would NEVER DO if they were just at the diner to eat. WHY dance on the table and call attention ? OH, they are teenagers and want attention? THEN D.I.E! Get the movie over in 20 minutes and let me move on! Thanks again! Was a GREAT review?therapy session!

Thank God we got to see Snarky Jay in that spidey outfit for more minutes than those seudo superheroines in the whole movie.
What amazed me about this movie, did the script writers even look at the comic book source material? This depiction of Madam Web was not even close to the comic book origin of this character. They wonder why this movie bombed. Like you Snarky Jay, I went to see this and quite frankly my wife and I left after about half an hour. The fact you sat through the entire film you deserve the medal of honor. Great video my wife and I got a kick out that scented candle you had. LOL

I watched Double Toasted Channels review of this movie ("6 Reasons Why Madame Web BOMBED"). The host is so disgusted by the lack of quality & respect to this unknown character, all I could think about was Jay watching this movie! I was right. 😂

It looks like we are seeing a movie gobbled together from several different versions. This is because there seems to be missing scenes. For example in the diner there is a newspaper story about the girls being kidnapped. But they were kidnapped just minutes earlier.
The villain movies could work - if they took a leaf out of Joker's book. Or heck, Logan. IE, make it a remake of a classic movie but with superheroes.
So, for example:
George Stacy
George Stacy returns to the force after a leave of absence to mourn his dead daughter, only to find there is a new serial killer going after New York's children. The killer has been sending pictures of his victims to the newspapers, stirring up paranoia and rage in the population, resulting in false allegations and leads that amount to little more than neighbors on a witch hunt.
As the public start turning on each other, Silvermane puts out a bounty to hunt down the killer, mostly due to how the public being so on edge is hurting the Maggia's business. Stacy needs to find the killer while negotiating the angry public, and dealing with the interference of supervillains who are after the same target for the sake of that bounty.
So basically a retelling of M, set in New York and with supervillains.
Marissa Tomei should be the best actress to play Madam Web in Spider verse. She survived another dimension when she never met Ben Parker but married to Mr. Web. If the MCU is planning to fix this problem, mixing with symbiote master, Knull vs Madame Web, it will be epic.

That scene would be a copy of a similar scene in Return of yhe Killer Tomatoes. Halfway through the film they ran out of money so George Clooney says they can finish the film with product placement, and for the rest of the film he pops up with some product completely at random putting it right in the middle of the scene.

I think a better Madame Web movie would be - Short synopsis - Madam Web is giving a vision of some mysterious being trying to kill two people. Unsure who these people are or why she is having visions. Eventually she discovers that the people are Richard and Mary Parker (parents of Peter Parker).
It is implied that her abilities are because she is a "metahuman" (another word for mutant but Sony can't use mutant because of Marvel)
As a young child she had visions but at age 13 other abilities began to manifest.
As for the antagonist - The antagonist can be a new creation for the movie. Origin unknow. Why is it trying to kill the Parkers? To the audience it is obvious - To prevent the birth of Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. To Madame Web and the Parkers. Unknown.
After defeat the Mysterious Being disappears.
And this lays the foundation for Madame Web is be integral to the SpideVerse. Maybe playing an important part in future SpiderVerse movies.

Great review. I rarely don’t finish watching a movie, but I started watching this on Netflix and didn’t finish.
Most of the acting is sub-par because the directors didn't care about their job. Actors/actresses must rely on the director's pointers during a shoot. It's hard to believe that any director yelled, "Cut! That's a wrap." with any confidence if they would've cared about the actor/actress' acting capabilities. If there had been anybody in production who actually cared about the movie, then it might not have turned out so badly.
First video of you, and I think I can handle a little more of your videos and see if it looks like it might go somewhere. Nice work. 🙂

Never saw this movie. But I give you incredible props for adding the Lazytown villain & screwing up your sync when you discussed the bad ADR in this. Well done, kid. You keep adding neat stuff. But WTF does a 5 o'clock shadow smell like? Old Aquavelva and flop sweat? Yuck!
