I genuinely refuse to believe that people are genuinely not aware of the "right-wing" comparisons. It's one of those "No it's not" you hear from a child that doesn't like the answer they are given. Just trying to save face that they are the target.
My mom is extremely right wing and genuinely loves it. She truthfully doesn't get it's mocking her. I think the actual explanation is that right wingers have no media literacy whatsoever

right-wingers look at media at its surface level, not it's subtext. if homelander was a black woman they would complain about it being woke and wouldn't watch it. @gauthierlagrange490 The Empire is definitely a reference to Nazi Germany (with the prequels parodying Hitler's rise to power), however one could also draw how it also parodies the USA being imperial itself, just by seeing how the Republic and the Jedi Order was. Intentionally or unintentionally, George Lucas managed overt political commentary that most American directors have not been able to do.
It's just the nature of group thinking. The more people divide and polarize, the stronger the group becomes in its actions. Boosting each other while completely disregarding others will always be the consequences.

You can tell The Boys is really hitting home when it gets review bombed in Season four and every one of the "bad" reviews is saying the same thing: They dislike the political messaging. @@JD-wu5pf Each to their own. Nah, I don’t think you’re mistaken. The quality dipped a fair bit but not so much that the show can’t make a full recovery like it did with the last episode. Even though they’d definitely want Homelander acquitted, I couldn’t buy that they’d make anything other than the most sanitized content imaginable for the sake of reaching the broadest audience. I especially couldn’t buy that they’d back conspiracy nuts. Even in this world I think you’d only be appealing to at most a quarter of people with that shit, especially after the Firecracker shenanigans. By definition, a parody is a comedic commentary about a work, that requires an imitation of the work. Satire, on the other hand, even when it uses a creative work as the vehicle for the message, offers commentary and criticism about the world, not that specific creative work. I do like how the creators did their research and it wasn’t just a basic criticism of Christianity. They acknowledged actual conspiracy theories related to Christianity, used real examples like the pillow guy, and knew the language Christian leaders use when they’re caught assaulting a child I think the reason some people didn’t realise The Boys was insulting them was because it seemed real and genuine to them
Putting myself in my Fundie shoes for a minute, if I was watching The Boys, I'd not recognize Evangelicalism was the target because "Those people on the show aren't actually Christians, and I am so I'm not the target, but maybe x denomination is because they're not real Christians" It's like they don't recognize it because their personal, individual daily behavior doesn't mirror the obvious propagandists in the show.
This. Purity culture extends to the faith too, and there's so many christian denominations that any visible dysfunction in a christian fundamental group is simply a form of heresy that the rest of them *obviously* don't or 'wouldn't' exhibit. You can run this cope effectively forever, since new branches split off all the time. It's an extremely resilient form of psychological control, which is why it's endured so long.

the producers arent exactly morally amazing though. They let hughie be raped and sexually assaulted in one season very graphically with no closure. Now ofcourse, I normally wouldve been like let them cook its fine, its going to be a statement on how "male trauma isnt taken seriously"... until the producer said it was just to make the show funnier.
I agree, I think season 4 is the most blatantly obvious about attacking the far right and Christian Evangelicals, which might be why more viewers with those beliefs realize it's mocking them. People who take that as the only or even overall message of the show are missing the point too though. It has many things to say about corporate greed, holding people in power accountable, and a lot of other things. It's not like Homelander actually believes what he's saying to his base, all he cares about is power and his god complex, which can also be a comment on far-right ideology and its leaders, but above all and also speaking to The Boys as a superhero show, it shows that giving people a lot of power while not holding them accountable for their actions, or putting them in a place where you just can't hold them accountable, is dangerous and wrong.

Something I always found interesting was how when Stormfront starts going on her blatant Nazi propaganda rant to Ryan, about 'white genocide' and so forth, you can see Homeland very clearly cringing.
If we take the homelander trump metaphor to the fullest extent, I think the point of that was Trump doesn't actually believe a lot of the stuff he preaches (was pro choice and donated to democrats) but he just likes being in power and being adored, just like homelander
its simply because Homelander doesn't care about any "pure" ethnicity or race, humans are all equally worthless to him. Only thing he is interested in is everybody worshipping him as God-Emperor , so he can feel validation that will never ever fullfill him since he is rotten to the core

Oh, and DC once had a whole project about attracting people from other nationalities to them with the "Batman Incorporated" series, where the BatFam went around the world supporting conveniently bat-themed vigilantes to get their thing going, and focused on the local struggles of each character and place. It didn't sell well, tho, so it got axed, but it was quite cool. And involved a lot of political commentary, both implicit and explicit. My favorite bit is with the native American batman, because by putting him in the same space as batmen from other countries, they were implicitly accepting his place of origin as an independent nation.
@@marcospatricio8283 You do know that that "Russian" Colossus is American? He wasn't created in Russia. All those Marvel and DC things are American. I know Britain has Marvelman, based on the Big Cheese. Britain is closer to the United States, but even then they are different. “American heroes are seductive in their power, and hence popular abroad, but similar heroes developed abroad either fail, being models of a foreign and ‘unrealistic’ ideology, or take on different meanings,” Darcy Sullivan, “The Politics of Super-heroes,” The Comics Journal, #142 (1991). Marshal Law is another British supe. He's a hero hunter. He hunts heroes, as he puts it. Hasn't found any. The American hero is the Messianic hero. It's the product of a puritanical society. This is basically what Marx meant by religion being the opium of the people. Don't wait for somebody to save you. Get off your knees and take your rights. Darcy Sullivan is wrong in one regard if he by heroes mean supes. Supes have never been very popular in Europe. Superman and the likes were mostly read by children, back when comics were a thing. Comics have traditionally been divided into color and b&w. Children read color comics. (Here are modern Euro supes: www.europecomics.com/catalog/) B&w were for more mature readers. Graphic novels, as they now often are known, were an exception. They are the likes of Tintin and Blueberry. Donald Duck by Carl Barks was also big. The biggest of them all in the case of Scandinavia.
Omg. I did NOT draw the parallel between them all finding out about V and the existential crisis of learning creationism is a myth. I thought I had caught all of them. I need to go stare into the middle distance for several minutes, good job. Good fucking job.
My favorite is the argument I have constantly seen by right wingers online regarding it, which pretty much boils down to, "Everyone is saying that we are just now realizing that it's making fun of us, but that's not true! We always knew! I'm so sick of them saying that as if it's a gotcha when it just isn't the case at all, as if we didn't know!!!! But anyway, it's stupid how the Boys totally wasn't making fun of us before but now it is! It just turned political all of a sudden!" It's like bruh..... you JUST DID THE VERY THING.
I'm from south america and watched this new season with my brother who has little to no knowledge on american politics, while i was kinda on edge by how similar to real life it was my brother was laughing from the thought of people thinking vaccines cause disseases and the extreme religious nonsense. is really funny to think that for some people in the world evangelical cristianity is the kind of weird character/institution that only exist in fiction.
It is weird. I'm from Asia, and people in my country who vocally denied COVID-19 and its vaccine were people who were exposed by American media. The ones who weren't exposed were more relaxed.
@@zitronenteeon my country there wasnt so much of anti vax people, in a way thanks to corruption, because the president told everyone that he will be the last to inject the vaccine, but then the media exposed it and he was the first mf on the country to use it
When I came out as a bisexual to my evangelical mother, the first thing she told me was that I was being selfish (because the time I spent figuring out my sexuality should have been spent praying to Jesus) and the second thing she told me was that I am going to hell.
It’s so ironic how people whose religion is built off unconditional love are some of the most callous, heartless people when it comes to showing that to their children. It really is funny how much the hypocrisy shows.
Reminds me of when someone was telling people to stop making Helldivers political and that it's just a game about shooting bugs. It's so incredibly on the nose that the war against the bugs is fought over a substance called OIL, but no, completely apolitical!
Quick correction-it's not oil. It's E-710 which spells oil upside down. But it's still /technically/ bug juice. I think Helldivers doesn't get nearly as much flak for "being too political" because it satirizes something so extreme that very few people would actually say that Super Earth is actually the real good faction (although to be fair, none of the others seem to be particularly good either.) If you swapped the politics and had SE be an extreme Communist faction rather than fascist, you'd probably only offend the "tankies" anyway, much like how only actual fascists seem to agree with Super Earth.

One of my favorite things about the Boys especially in season 4 is that while they tackle the dogma of evangelical Christianity they don’t say that it’s worthless or a shame. Like for example Hughie wanting to practice forgiveness on the people who wrongs him like A-Train or the characters learning to forgive themselves. Which as someone who is a Christian/Omnist is something I respect a lot because they’re are a lot of good things said by it but is perverted by greed, pride, and arrogance like the super heroes in a meta textual sense. It’s something that I think is very well done in the show compared to the comics.
Homelander epitomizes the worst traits of humanity, showcasing how unchecked power, egotism, and moral decay can lead to catastrophic outcomes. His character is a chilling representation of what happens when someone with immense abilities is devoid of empathy, accountability, and a moral compass. Homelander’s actions, driven by his insatiable need for adoration and control, reveal a profound narcissism. He exploits his powers for personal gratification, disregarding the lives and well-being of others. His facade of heroism masks a deeply corrupt and malevolent nature, highlighting the dangers of idolizing powerful figures without scrutinizing their true intentions and character. Moreover, Homelander’s manipulation of public perception and media exemplifies how those in power can distort reality to maintain their dominance. His lack of empathy and frequent displays of cruelty reflect a fundamental disregard for human life and dignity. This portrayal forces viewers to confront the terrifying potential of power without accountability and the dark consequences of a society that elevates and empowers the morally bankrupt. In essence, Homelander is a stark cautionary tale about the corruption of power, the fragility of moral integrity, and the dangers inherent in blind hero-worship. His character is a potent reminder of the capacity for evil within humanity when power is left unchecked and ethical boundaries are ignored.

"I was a nurse, so when they started saying anti mask shit... " It's worth pointing out that Dr Fauci at the start said that wearing masks would not be effective at stoping the spread of covid. A few months later he effectively admitted that he lied. When those in power lie it ends up discrediting actual science.
Masks messed up my respiratory system and then I was fired from my job because I didn't want a medical experiment put into my body, so it's idiots like you that made things so much worse. @gauthierlagrange490 The Empire is definitely a reference to Nazi Germany (with the prequels parodying Hitler's rise to power), however one could also draw how it also parodies the USA being imperial itself, just by seeing how the Republic and the Jedi Order was. Far-right-wingers finally realizing the show was making fun of them the whole time: "The new season is woke liberal garbage!"

Took them a really long time to get there.
Now, i hope they realise that Homelander is the bad guy and Vought is a stand in for corporate America.
Literally. My “libertarian” coworker six months ago talking my ear off about how interesting Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys, is. Cut to the start of the new season he approaches me in the morning asking if I can believe that liberals are saying now how The Boys is about Trump. I just had to be like “Really? Crazy, man. Thought it was about superheroes haha.” Cut again to two weeks ago someone says “The Boys is good.” and he says “Well it was at first but this new season they went woke. Go woke, go broke!” which is something he repeats like a cartoon catchphrase.
I do like how the creators did their research and it wasn’t just a basic criticism of Christianity.
They acknowledged actual conspiracy theories related to Christianity, used real examples like the pillow guy, and knew the language Christian leaders use when they’re caught assaulting a child
I think the reason some people didn’t realise The Boys was insulting them was because it seemed real and genuine to them
Putting myself in my Fundie shoes for a minute, if I was watching The Boys, I'd not recognize Evangelicalism was the target because "Those people on the show aren't actually Christians, and I am so I'm not the target, but maybe x denomination is because they're not real Christians"
It's like they don't recognize it because their personal, individual daily behavior doesn't mirror the obvious propagandists in the show.
Really feel sorry for the common religious folks who want to practice their faith in peace but have evangelical Christianity ruining the entire religion altogether.
Trust me. It’s sucks so much.
Not as sorry as I feel for those considering less than during the crusades.
Feel worse for the people who aren't Christian at all, especially the ones who are visibly of different faiths like Sikhs.
And then they tell you "if you're not a hateful jerk you're not a Christian." I'm sorry but I just don't see how "You will not mistreat immigrants in this land for your ancestors were immigrants..." Tracks with having an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent rip Abuela from her rocking chair and throw her in a holding cell. Just don't get it.
People don't have to wait for the next season of The Boys, they just need to change to a news channel.

the producers arent exactly morally amazing though.

His character is a potent reminder of the capacity for evil within humanity when power is left unchecked and ethical boundaries are ignored.
this is beautifully written... please write a book

Tax the $#!t out of the multi-billion dollar Religious industry.
Also tax religious conventions that are essentially real estate corporations.
I'm not going to lie I am so happy that this video was made. While watching the boys I was curious about what the skeptic would think. Hope that's not weird thanks drew
36:46 The religious right is doing the same thing with IVF btw. No Christian had a stance on it until 2020
I know. Such gullible dinguses. I sware 😅.
Drew, you are absolutely the best!! Thank you for your thoughtful videos and your kindness and understanding tone always. You are an amazing human and I always enjoy your videos! Keep them coming! SUPERHUGGS from London!
Fuckin diabolical
I got halfway through this video not knowing it was GMS. I kept thinking this guy is smart & insightful. I need to subscribe. It was then I realized I subscribed years ago 😇
Keep up the great work 🙏
I keep subscribing and unsubscribing because my home page gets bombarded with his videos 😂
The rich guy that mansplained abortion to the head popper was parodying Newt Gingriches infamous "legitate rape" quote.
Good catch!
Oops, need to correct myself, it was Todd Akins quote, not Gingriches.
In this video I learned that The Boys is parodying Matt Walsh specifically. Which is hilarious.
Imagine all the disappointed priests when they found out what "The Boys" was really about!
Drew I shit you not, one of my best friends in high school and his gf practiced the poop hole loop hole. It's more common than you may think haha ha!
Saying “I shit you not” in this context is devious 💀
Just one election away from The Handmaids Tale.
My mom watches that show.
The Handmaid’s Tale has already been a reality for many people of colour throughout history.
Can't vote your way out of tyranny, this was the inevitable conclusion to not stopping the federal reserves from taking over the country.
Cry about it 😂
@@aldimrmr4108 yeah, go cry about it.
The fact it took them literally 5 YEARS to understand the show was mocking them the whole time tells everything you need to know about the far right.
as someone who used to be right wing. and I'd even say I was republican when the show started... I knew lol. even the "they hit both sides" people I felt were dumb back then not getting that the woke things they were making fun of, were backed....by the evil capitalist company it was very obvious even the poitns they make fun of the left are backed by right wing ideology. I am a full leftist now the thing that broke me away was the anti masking crowd lol. I was a nurse, so when they started saying anti mask shit I was like "oh, they're fully stupid"
Why couldn't you respect our decisions? If you want to wear a mask and get unknown ingredients pumped into your body, that's up to you, but you don't get to decide that for anyone else. Do you know what the Nuremberg Codes are?
As a former Evangelical Christian Pastor your content has been so helpful in my Deconstruction process, keep it up Drew!
3:20 I just skyrocketed backwards through time, I remember getting this fucking boxes in elementary school. It was a *private christian school*
Selling vip packages to religious events sounds a bit like indulgences
I like the parallel with Ezekiel where in Season 1, he says...
"You shouldn't need proof,"
And in Season 4, he says...
"What more proof could you need"
I think it might be a reference to...
Something good happens: god did it
Something bad happens: gods divine plan
Im surprised you didnt mention that the lead for "Sound of Freedom" literally was Jesus in passion of the christ lol.
Eric (the editor) had to tell me that lol. I never watched that movie because my church saw it as too Catholic.
@@GeneticallyModifiedSkeptic yeah like I wouldn't have known but it was a big part fo the conversations around it haha.
@@GeneticallyModifiedSkepticso they didn't want y'all watching because it was TOO FAITHFUL to the source material?
I've been waiting for this. Let's gooo!
If they don’t get that the Onion is parody, they certainly won’t see the parody in The Boys.
The on point critique of corporate and christian behaviors is part of why I have seen all four seasons of this. Cathartic. Feels like it comes from experiences the writers had.
The lack of self awareness to not realize you’re the joke is great. This show also makes fun of the other side too, just like family guy, South Park, etc. it’s why I love those shows.
they do this with fightclub, breaking bad, rage against the machine, american psycho, etc
When I tell you this show is therapy for people who grew up conservative and left that world behind
As a Brazilian, i find that christ redemer American version, to be...
As we say kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.😂😂😂
True; but unfortunately it has already been exported to your shores
@@TheTroutyness what?
Are you referencing the fact that the statue in Rio de Janeiro was not really built there?
It was a bit too confusing to read.
@@brunobarreto6017 No, I mean you have your own virulent racists and religious nationalists. I am in no way lionizing the USA. I just have seen people in other countries claim their states are not racist likewise in rhetoric. Fascism tends to rise in more than one place at once.

It doesn't matter. Catholicism or Christianity, both have the same agenda in the end.
World religion is coming under Christianity. Get in line.

My family did the operation Christmas child when I was little. I remember putting together boxes every year while my parents told me about how happy we'll make all the poor black kids😢
