Yeah, Biz: saw them on their final tour- brilliance. There are some groups that just DON'T do bad songs. Zep, Floyd, Tull, Rush, Eurythmics, Jeff Beck, Jeff Healey, Eric Clapton... and Supertramp. And oddly, their best song was never issued by Supertramp- guitarist, keys, singer, writer Roger Hodgson released it after they broke up on his album of the same name- Hai Hai. Supertramp is in a world of their own. They are so diverse in their sound starting with their vocals and the groups musicians backing them up. Their album "Breakfast in America" came out in 1979 and was number one on the charts for 6 weeks. Two of their songs that are definitely my favorites are " Take the Long Way Home" and "Logical Song" and I could probably list at least a half dozen more. This group from England made quite an impact in the United States and the world.

saw them live 11 times...the real star of the band is John Anthony Helliwell who chats a lot with the audience, makes jokes etc and plays saxophone, 2nd piano, triangle, kazoo etc ...just a wizard!!
Great Reaction. FYI the cover of the Greatest Hits album has photographic elements of several album themes, that's why it seems so trippy. If you were familiar with their catalog it would make more sense. For your next dive into Supertramp I'd recommend "School" from Crime of the Century. "School" and "Bloody Well Right" are sequential on that album and are "connected", I recommend listening to both at the same time.
Love watching people discover something new that they enjoy. Don't forget this album is much older than you. It's a really big world out there mate. From Australia 🇦🇺😃
This is a fucking masterpiece, I used to sneak my brothers' 8 track of this when I was 7 and listen to it over and over again with his headphones. I didn't understand it cause I was a kid, but I knew it was important, and not just because it was beautiful music, but because it was haunting, and heavy, and deep and other worldly. And trust me when I say this, listening to this in the 70s when it was part of the culture was magical. Man I wish I was a kid again for a day, just to listen to this album over and over again, and maybe have some orange Kool Aid.
That cover is a combo cover for a greatest hits album. It combines the artwork of the albums "Crime of the Century", "Crisis? What Crisis", and "Breakfast in America". Love Supertramp!

OK - I gotta be honest. I've heard this song before, but never really stood out. Probably due to how strong their catalog is. They have a bunch of songs that are incredible. Worth a deep dive. Crazy musicians and phenomenal songs.
Hey Biz, loved your reaction 😁 Supertramp is a British band. They catered to many audience's of people. There are a few songs I really "Supertramp - Dreamer (live in Paris)" you'll probably recognize this song from a movie. Your face said it all 🤔😆👍🙏💙
I was blessed to see Supertramp on 2 tours, and during Rudy they would play a short black and white film on a big screen behind the stage, with scenes of train station, people boarding a train, with a camera in the front engine window and the train leaves the station, gradually the film speeds up, going faster and faster, timed to the music, then SUPER fast throughout the city and countryside of someplace I'd guess was in Europe, maybe the outskirts of London, and the film goes changes to color, with the color of the film randomly changing (high tech back then), then as the song climaxes, the train starts slowing back down to normal speed, as it enters another train station, and passengers get on and offs as the song ends, which perfectly matches the train station sounds and announcer you hear in the background. One of the most creative concert effects I'd seen up to that point in the late 70s. One of those peak experiences that gets imprinted onto your brain until you die.😍
My parents saw them in concert way back in ‘85. My dad said they were crazy talented, everyone could play everything, and every few songs they would all switch off to different instruments.
There's a little bit of Rudy in us all. There's probably better albums in the 70s (not many) but this one was the one that got played. The LP, the CD, The Cassette.
This is just another banger band that came out in the 70's with all the other great bands that we had to choose from, didn't think you were ready for them but enjoy it anyway 😉 🤟
This was an album cut. There were 3 hits from this ablum, School, Bloody Well Right, and Dreamer. Hide in your shell is another superb album cut. They are well worth the dive.
Supertramp was formed in London, England in 1969. Their music was described as progressive rock and pop and relied heavily on Wurlitzer electric piano. They took their name from a novel by W.H. Davies called "The Autobiography of a Super Tramp". The most successful lineup of the band was Rick Davies (lead vocals, keyboards and harmonica; Roger Hodgson (lead vocals, guitar, bass guitar and keyboards); John Anthony Helliwell (saxophone, clarinet and keyboards); Dougie Thompson (bass guitar) and Bob Siebenberg (Bon C. Benberg) (drums). Some of their most popular songs include "Rudy"; "Blood Well Right"; "Goodbye Stranger"; "The Logical Song"; "Hide in Your Shell"; "Give a Little Bit"; "Dreamer"; "Take the Long Way Home" "Fool's Overture"
Hey there! Life-long Supertramp fan here (& new subscriber after seeing this) & your reaction is the BEST & most comprehensive that I’ve seen so far. You get it 👍🏻👏🏻 They write masterpieces! 🔥 🎢
I saw this band perform twice. They play all these different instruments on stage. All the keyboards, pianos, guitars, saxophone, horns, every kind of drums, gongs, cymbals. Several members play many different instruments in each song. The first time I saw them , it was for the “Crime of the Century “world tour”. They brought along a whole bunch of actors who acted out parts on stage as the songs were being played. They also had a huge round screen behind them, that played movie reels of old trains and other stuff to match the music. IT WAS AMAZING. 😮🎉
Marc Bolan and T.Rex "The Slider" ...Seriously man. And give some others a try, of his. His career was short, and amazing. His death, tragic. .Also, this song here... Contrasting melodies! That funk dude. ❤
Yeah this is a song that describes my whole life from beginning to end... This is my life.... Identify with this song more than any other song that I think I've ever heard because it describes my life totally... It's been a fuccked up nightmare.... Thank you for doing a spot about the song..... Because I grew up listening to this song as well as many other Supertramp songs... Just know that every time that I hear Supertramp music... It shows the psychology of who I am.... Thank God I made it this far...yet I believe that I made it through because of this band
What a wonderful reaction! I remember the first time I heard Supertramp my mind blew too. Like Pink Floyd and Queen, two of my favourite bands, there was no way to predict these songs before hearing them. They keep on the edge of a moment. Everything is so unexpected, and yet it all comes together perfectly. Music from that era was very theatrical, and sound effects were common, and Supertramp used a lot of that really well. They were also great live. It was the same songs, just longer and fuller, with more solos.
I had forgotten how brilliant this song was. I had just fitted a high quality cartridge to my turntable Shure M97 I think.. and had a pair of Sennheiser hd40 headphones and it blew me away. Every supertramp song is great, and this is one of the greatest. Excellent reaction...
Dope epic shit! Trippy as fuck! Love it! It was fun watching this and hearing you. No trickery or fuckery here though. Just talent. Real musicians who can write instrumentation and lyrics , play instruments, arrange and produce good music overall. Your reaction to the tempo shifts and time signature changes is significant. It keeps you engaged mentally but you can't really dance to it but that is not really the point. It takes you on a journey doesn't it? To answer WTF is this, well it is simply something you like or don't like but if you are open minded to the journey the personal tastes are fluid and can grow or change. Some want to label or genre specify so this band is described as prog rock, art rock, prog pop but to me I just like it. When this song was performed live they had a video backdrop screen that had a train track seen from the perspective of the engine that was perfectly synced to the changing rhythms of the music in the section that speeds up towards the end. I am sure you can find it here on YT from the performance in Paris.
You need more? Well... they got more. A lot more. Pick any song from their most succesful albums "Crime of the Century" (1974) and "Breakfast in America" (1979) and you'll be amazed. Both album covers will also give you a clue about the cover of the greatest hits albums you just looked at and weren't sure what to make of it. And beyond those two albums: "Ain't nobody but me" (1975), "A Soapbox Opera" (1975), "Two of Us" (1975), "Give a little bit" (1977), "Even in the Quietest Moments" (1977), the epic "Fool's Overture" (1977), "Cannonball" (1985), "Better Days" (1985) and "Brother Where you Bound" (1985). The last three are from an album made after Roger Hodgson (the one with the high voice) had already left the band.
That particular album cover is their greatest hits and its a collage of their other album covers combined ! Crime of the century and Breakfast in America to be exact !
The cover you're looking at is from a greatest hits package and it's a mashup of the covers of two of their most popular albums - Breakfast in America and Crime of the Century. Both albums are well worth a full listen! Unlike most rock acts of the day, Supertramp was keyboard rather than guitar based. That's PART of what gave them their unique sound, along with their prog song structures and impeccable arrangements.
Four masterpiece albums Crime of the Century Crisis? What Crisis? Even In the Quietest Moments Breakfast in America Two very good albums Famous Last Words Brother Where You Bound Songs range from rock/jazz, prog, pop with prog flourishes...good to masterpiece( as Rudy is)... The live version of Rudy is fantastic
Thx for reviewing this dynamite track. Been a long time since I did a deep dive into this release!!! Great choice!!! Check out Fools Overture for sure ( off 'Even In the Quietest Moments')!!
such an overlooked band. the musical and lyrical quality was UK's answer to Steely Dan. An elevated taste in musical structure and dynamics was required to 'grok' the soundscape at that time. So many influences mixed in an original influence envelope. These guys were a shock to US sensibilities and suffered the kind of FM radio smothering as with anything more advanced from Steely Dan than Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Commercialization of the sound was always the fear in fans. So, Supertramp was a musician's group and one of the most intelligent creative influences back then. Nice to see people will continue to listen to this music buried in the heads of advancingly old people. Supertramp will be wafting over the earphones in ships to Mars.
Rick Davies was often overlooked as a singer as Roger often sang the lead. He is on fire here. I was so lucky to have got to see them in the mid 70s just after they released Crime. To this day, I've never heard a better sound.
"Crisis? What Crisis?" is my favorite album of theirs because it has "Lady" and "Sister Moonshine" on it. But the truth is, I love them all. One of the great power bands that came out of the seventies. You need to check out Pink Floyd, Rush, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Rolling Stones, Blue Oyster Cult, to name a few. Some people of my generation consider these bands worthy of standing beside the great classical composers of history. I believe Mozart would have been a big fan of most of these bands, for their unbridled creativity and raw power. Great reaction, I f'ing loved it!!

Because back in the seventies they were kind of an inquired taste with young males that were into hard rock music ! And I think it had to do with all the instruments Supertramp had , You did not hear that kind of stuff in your hardcore classic rock music !

Great reaction! Welcome to the sound of Supertramp! This was one heck of a great band..., check out the whole album 'Crime of the Century'... then keep moving through their 1970's albums... onto 'Breakfast in America' and 'Famous Last Words'. Roger Hodgsons solo stuff is also great. Prog rock at it's best. (along with Pink Floyd obviously..., and check out Marillion).
The cover art on the “best of” album is a mashup reference to the covers of two of Supertramp’s most popularly successful albums, “Crime of the Century” (which this track originally came from), and “Breakfast in America”, each of which had stunning and well thought out album art in their own right. My personal favourite Supertramp album is probably “Even in the Quietest Moments”, which also had some very striking cover art. Whether you love or hate the aural characteristics of analog vinyl records, and no matter how convenient it is today to enjoy hot and cold running digital music, it’s undeniable that LP sleeves provided a fantastic canvas for visual art creations to promote and augment the music being sold.
This genius band struck solid GOLD musically for at least two albums straight. You’re already on material from the earlier, more expansive and dark-themed of the two masterpieces: “Crime of the Century”. You are also completely obligated to hear every sound made on their next album, the sunshiny, joyous mega-hit “Breakfast in America”. My guy, you’re in for a whole lotta treats. And oddly, their best song was never issued by Supertramp- guitarist, keys, singer, writer Roger Hodgson released it after they broke up on his album of the same name- Hai Hai. Enjoy and peace from Canada- be safe.
Great list!
@@lvgelfling72 Thank you, kind sir. Peace.
@@27thangel23 you're welcome but i am a female. Lol. 😁❤
@@lvgelfling72 I most humbly beg your pardon. I am an old soldier in my 70s and no longer know how to be respectful words- wise... I've been berated and upbraided for using Ma'am, Miss and 'young lady' (the latter to a girl of 14 or 15). I meant NO disrespect. And I DO thank you for your politeness- both times. Peace.
@@27thangel23 Thank for serving our country in some of our hardest times. I just corrected in case we chat again. You have no way of really knowing. And I was in no way offended by you calling me sir, I just wanted you to know I was female. Much love 💘
This track is one of my Supertramp favs amazing it came out in the 1970's
Supertramp is one of the greatest bands ever...dive into the rabbit hole. It's well worth the journey.
"Ain't Nobody But Me" is one of my favorite Supertramp songs...
saw them live 11 times...the real star of the band is John Anthony Helliwell who chats a lot with the audience, makes jokes etc and plays saxophone, 2nd piano, triangle, kazoo etc ...just a wizard!!
Go for it! The world needs more Supertramp! :-)
Thanks for the reaction.
Very unique band with a great catalog of songs and albums
That cover is a combo cover for a greatest hits album. It combines the artwork of the albums "Crime of the Century", "Crisis? What Crisis", and "Breakfast in America". Love Supertramp!
Hi bro, its a very long time ago when i hear Supertramp, i was so young and i hear more Queen, Deep Purple and AC/DC ! I was a teenager and only sone hard stoff like this but much Supertramp, now i am older and can hear this music too and much more ! Greatings from germany ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I think this song was their peak, in a career of Supertramp peaks. Truly epic songwriting and execution.
Anything from Super Tramp is fabulous. " School", " Hide in you Shell", really every song on " Crim of the Century" would be great. Then anything else. Enjoy
Your face said it all 🤔😆👍🙏💙
😁😁😁
Super trippy. I love just walking around listening to their best of album. Helps you process emotions.
"Dream within a dream" is a perfect way to describe Supertramp's musical tapestries.
Fantastic band, Fantastic catalog!!!🎼👌🎵👍🎶✌️😁
You're right about their clever trickery. I think you'll enjoy Fool's Overture just as much.Love your reactions!
Its great to see reactions to songs /artists we grew up with, where did the real music go to over the decades. Good stuff BIZ!
Don’t forget the 8-track!
Supertramp's lyrical artistry and composition are magical. They take you on a journey with every one of their songs.
Bloody Well Right or School both from Crime of the century album those two are some absolute far out songs!!!
Shades of Steely Dan it sounds like. Never paid that much attention to Supertramp. Will have to revisit. Thanks Biz.
Hey there! Life-long Supertramp fan here (& new subscriber after seeing this) & your reaction is the BEST & most comprehensive that I’ve seen so far. You get it 👍🏻👏🏻 They write masterpieces! 🔥 🎢
Thanks for subbing
I've only heard the hits on the radio but you will love Super Tramp, I'm sure of it.
The "Logical Song" will explain it, and if that don't help then try "School".
Fantastic song from one of my all time favorite groups and albums. If you thought this was good, “School” will blow you away.
I'm Brazilian Supertramp fan since 1973. I LOVE YOUR REACTION. LOOK LIKE A BABY DISCOVERING WHAT MUSIC IS ABOUT. ❤😅😊
Rudy ! Your reaction is great. You really can express your ideas well 1
I appreciate that!
Thank you 🙌🏿
Yes! I first heard them in 1975. They blew my mind. Got to see them live in Paris in 1977.
I saw Supertramp play this song live in 1977...5th row, center...Paris, France. I have been a fan since 1975.
I cant wait to dive into their work I enjoyed that song very much
You need more? Well... they got more.
Your commentary at 3:50 had me in tears laughing 😂😂😂😂
Definitely worth exploring more Supertramp, much underrated group
my favorite Supertramp song, thanks for the great reaction !!!! Fools' Overture is a close second !!!!
I seen supertramp in the royal Albert Hall London. It was the best concert ever and I've been to many! 35 years ago!! 😬
if you like "Rudy" you have to listen to and comment on "school", "Cannonball" Bloody well right I think. Thanks for your reaction on "Rudy" !
One of 'THE' bands of the 70's and 80's. They were as good live as the vinyl. I nevertire listening to them. My favourite is "Downstream"
Crime of the century album
This song is so trippy in concert. Just mindblowing.
Four masterpiece albums
Crime of the Century
Crisis? What Crisis?
Even In the Quietest Moments
Breakfast in America
Two very good albums
Famous Last Words
Brother Where You Bound
Songs range from rock/jazz, prog, pop with prog flourishes...good to masterpiece( as Rudy is)...
" The Logical Song " off the chain
Supertramp is well worth a listen 👍✌️♥️
Absolutely yes their catalog is worth diving into! Their cstalog is fairly deep and very unique.
Rick Davies was often overlooked as a singer as Roger often sang the lead. He is on fire here. I was so lucky to have got to see them in the mid 70s just after they released Crime. To this day, I've never heard a better sound.
Unlike Rudy himself, this song is really going somewhere; from the opening, thru each phase to the glorious climactic ending. Fav song, great band.
Live Paris, one of the greatest albums of all time. So under the radar it's crazy.
First saw Supertramp in ‘76. Still one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen (and there’s tough competition… Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, The Who, ELP, Gong, Ray Charles with the Rev. Al Green, David Bowie, the Tubes, Tom Waits, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Weather Report, Neil Young, Chick Corea, Deep Purple, War, Earth, Wind and Fire, Chicago, Crosby, Stills and Nash, P Funk, Bob Dylan, The Alan Parsons Project, The Fifth Dimension, Yes, Genesis, Robin Trower, King Sunny Ade, the Dead, the Eagles, Elton John, Stanley Clarke, Buddy Guy, Billy Cobham, George Duke, Dave Brubeck 5, Steely Dan, Jorma Kaukonen, Steve Miller, Blue Magic, ELO, the Moody Blues, Rush, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Aerosmith, Heart, Bad Company, Queen, Alice Cooper, Herbie Hancock, ELO, BTO, Fleetwood Mac, George Straight, Leo Kottke, Seals and Crofts, Grand Funk, Ronnie Laws, Tony Joe White, Peter Paul and Mary, Joe Walsh, the Doobie Brothers, Jimmy Cliff and and Third World, Bêla Fleck and the Flecktones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, , Chris Thiele, America, Elvis Costello, Asia, Return to Forever, Peter Gabriel, the Dukes of September, Buddy Miles, Stanley Jorden, Corrine Bailey Rae, Jefferson Starship, Jack DeJonette, Rick Wakeman, Alice Cooper, Linda Ronstadt… I haven’t even begun to dig into classical artists (Mstilsav Rostrapovitch, Yo Yo Ma, James Galway, the Chinese symphony orchestra, the Russian symphony orchestra…)
Marcel Marceau… and MANY, MANY more……
Just saying… Supertramp was special!
Your music mirrors your mind
My album suggestion is Brother Where You Bound specifically the title track Cannon Ball is also a track worth listening to
Of all the people I've watched react to Supertramp your reaction to this song was amazing ! I love to see other people enjoy supertramps music as much as I do ! Because back in the seventies they were kind of an inquired taste with young males that were into hard rock music ! And I think it had to do with all the instruments Supertramp had , You did not hear that kind of stuff in your hardcore classic rock music !
I’ve just found you and was so entertained by your reaction to Suoertramp for the 1st time. You are in for a great ride my friend. Crime of the Century is one of my favourite Albums of all times. I hope you enjoy it as much as me. Will look forward to more
Great reaction!
You need to listen to a lot of Supertramp! Try Breakfast in America album - The Logical Song or Goodbye Stranger.
Hadn't heard this forgotten gem in a while. Want to pull out the album now and get lost in the sauce.
Grab an OJ, and enjoy. 😉
Awesome reaction!!! You should check out Long way Home, Logical Song, Breakfast in America and Bloody well Right....
Love this band, love this album and love this song. Saw them in concert touring for this album. Fantastic! Thanks Biz!
By all means, they have a deep catalog of quality music. One of the best hidden rock treasures.
