Factorio "There is no Spoon" on 100% Default Settings: The Ultimate Comprehensive Guide!

The new major update for Shapez.io is coming out 9 October (THIS FRIDAY!), so this is your last chance to get the game for only $4!
But is it a good game? Let's put it this way: it's the sole reason this video was delayed by a full week... Sorry guys, I couldn't stop playing until I designed and built a contraption that could produce every possible shape in the game on demand! I might show that off in a later video, but first I'll focus on finishing this series!
=========================
Apologies for the lack of videos lately. This "There-is-no-spoon"-project grew much bigger than I anticipated. It turns out, just winging a playthrough is a long, long shot away from being an actual fool-proof guide with a structured and clear build order.
Well, several 100s of hours later into this "Iceberg" project, all of the "underwater" stuff is finally finished (realizing the first video/original style just wasn't going to cut it, designing the build order, multiple playtesting playthroughs and refining while writing and updating a reliable guide, a final playthrough while strictly following my own guide step-by-step to check for completeness, and now finally recording and editing the actual playthrough!)
But now we're getting to the visual part of the iceberg, the final recorded and edited playthrough with the downloadable guide (released with every episode)! Now that everything is properly planned out, I'm estimating that a new installment of this four-part series should come out every 2 weeks or so!
In this video we cover the "Red Tech Era": The game opening, how to deal with the first battles, how to set up your base so that it's also suitable for the later game, and setting up red+green science!

Factorio "There is no Spoon" (finish the game in 8 hours or less): The Ultimate Complete Guide
-- Features lots of tips and tricks, ratios, do's and don'ts --
Play along: Map seed 1212558549
(but for the love of god turn ON the research queue... it drives me CRAZY to play without!)
If you want to, cheese the biters: Set pollution spread to 0% and give yourself a 600% starting area: it's like playing on peaceful mode except you can still get the achievement!
My self-imposed rules:
DEFAULT MAP SETTINGS (no tweaks, so biters on, research Q off (why god why), etc)
NO BLUEPRINTS from the blueprint library/other games
NO BOTS, no trains (self build everything, not even personal roboport!)
NO TURRETS! (at all! Yes, also no gun turrets!)
Map generation tips:
Most important features in the preview screen:
Can you build without obstructions? (cliffs, forests, water, nests)
Are there enough resources nearby? (oil, extra iron and copper)
Secondary features (bonus points but not requirements):
Do the starting resources not overlap?
Are there forests which absorb pollution?
Are there not too many enemies nearby?
Roughly plan out how your base is going to look:
Main bus area
Smelting area
Power
Oil processing
Secondary resources hook up
Memorize where the nearby nests are outside the starting area
(so you can guesstimate if any off-screen pollution is reaching the nests)

Hey, love your content! Almost at 100K!
Finally WE GET TO HEAR YOUR GODLY VOICE! So Happy, been here for a while now and certainly dont plan on leaving anytime soon
Thank you :) It's a bit scary doing a full voice-over video for the first time, especially because my mic really should be upgraded for this style of video.
he talked in one of the tightrope videos too
@@the1ultimatet1u49 talked in a couple of them I think, it's nice to have voice over though, allows me to keep doing my work while listening :)
Because I'm on a timer for this playthrough, I can't really fool around to much filming parts which suit Text mike. So I decided to put Talking mike in the leading role for this one, because else to much visual information would get lost while reading. I still love the calm/quiet video style with Text mike though, he will return!
@@MichaelHendriks i enjoy your text too, its small enough to not be the main focus, but draws enough attention to itself that its enjoyable to read. plus and no offense, but the tone and accent in your voice makes me feel like a good joke would go unheard or misunderstood :p
I’m very new to factorio (first playthrough and less than 50 hours in) and your channel is a treasure trove. I love how well you blend information and advice with entertainment. Keep up the good work man!
I've been following this guide by pausing my game, watching this video, unpausing and doing what you say, and repeating. This video by itself got me to the point where I could quickly setup some stuff to get the achievement to make a locomotive in eight hours, so this series is going to pull multiple whammies for me. Thank you
nice :)
I was about to comment: Man your content is world class, but I SERIOUSLY have trouble understanding you. Most likely caused by you mic-setup.
Then I remembered I should check your latest videos. Unsurprisingly the new sound quality is A HUGE lot better.
Thanks for your help mate!
I think this was the last video recorded through a headset mic, from the very next green science vid the sound should be better already
Your Videos are better than watching TV... came home from sport, cook some food and while eating I watch you build... you are breathtaking!
While watching previous episode my opinion on Talking Mike wasn't really positive... but you're alright Talking Mike. I like you. You should appear in the videos more often.
Might give this a shot - I did a no spoon on a non-default settings map, but being able to get started quickly would useful for a normal factorio playthrough without silly resource settings.
"ultimate comprehensive guide" *ends at green science* :'(
Looking forward to part 2-X!
There's gonna be 4 parts (red tech, green tech, blue tech, high tech), an estimated 2 hours is a bit long for one video. Once this guide is done, I'll edit it down to another stand-alone guide for advanced players who can do with less handholding :)
@@MichaelHendriks makes sense :) looking forward to them! :)
Excellent videos, excellent commentary, excellent presentation. AAA+. I appreciate your hard work!
Glad to see a new video!
This is great! Really enjoyed the video, looking forward to the next ones. Crazy how fast 34 minutes can go when youre engrossed in something
You can also use Shift+Click to craft all, useful for using up all your iron on belts, once you have queued up everything else
I did manage to get this achievement, but not as efficiently as you prescribe in this great video.Nice.
Now do it while also doing the "Lazy Bastard" achivement at the same time
And not eating fish. But I think this play and edit is good as is (don't overcomplicate things and make them hard to watch).
Last month I had the idea to play the map with my own schemas and uploaded a replayable savefile, if anyone is really into it: drive.google.com/file/d/1R6d27a_ecHIMw5ungCwtXvwwj35ABWR0/view?usp=sharing
You can use turret creep method with gun turrets, then you won't need fish. But it's a bit expensive early on to craft that many turrets and ammo. Since I aim to finish this playthrough in about 6 hours, I might do a livestream with some of these added challenges later and see if I can still make it ;)
@@MichaelHendriks I agree that turret spamming requires a big investment for the game stage, but it would be possible to use just one turret for cover fire (at the correct distance eliminates the biters while you deal with worms and nests).
In the replay I managed to deal with small clusters without turrets (need to dodge the worm projectiles when you hear them shooting).
It is also possible to build pipeboxes (pillboxes of pipe) and smash biters and nests from inside (and you regenerate HP as you don't strictly shoot).
Hopefully you don't deal with bigger clusters until you have the car (drive and shoot with impunity until you run into a rock and get wrecked) and finally the tank (a pacifist prefers hugging than shooting >:P).
@@fjarandag You don't also run into a rock with your tank and get wrecked?
@@jonny6702 Of course tank does not make you invulnerable (and it should not!). But you don't need mad skills to run over 2-3 nests at a time and escape.
A rare sighting of "Talking Michael". Impressive!
Congratulations on 100.000 Subscribers!
I love shapez, if i had to describe shapez it'd be 'factorio distilled into its pure base components'
just watched both the biter island and ribbon world series, cant wait for more epic gamer content
25:00 anxiety increases. limited resources just trying to take em out one more time.... thats factorio for me for sure
Congrats on 100!
Looking forwards to Part Two!
this is one of my favorite series to revisit.
I was so mad you stopped talking after that one video where you talked that I stopped watching your old series at that point, keep it up man.
I talked for only one part of a single episode of a 20+ part text series, you can't realistically blame me for "stopping to talk" I feel haha. But enjoy this series then :)
@@MichaelHendriks I got mad because some comments suggested you should not talk, and then u didn't. I have no idea why would someone suggest that and it seemed like u got insecure about talking, but I might be wrong.
Congrats on 100k Subscribers!
13:24 FYI You can drag over belts through undergrounds without breaking them. Very useful for building compact miner setup like this
That feature wasn't added yet at the time of this series
Voice is good but I also like text. Kinda bummed that you didn't start from where the previous video left off, I was excited when I saw the upload but feels like I already watched this. Still watching though :)
Yeah, it was a difficult decision as I did like the way the first playthrough was going. But the play was way to unorganized to make it into a real / copyable guide, which is why I decided to start over. The next 3 videos which complete this series will come out faster now that everything is planned out though (est. every 2 weeks)
@@MichaelHendriks can't wait :D
ah yeah i forgot.
you should also INCREASE the MIC voice for better hearing.
but your choise.
Cool video, nice strategie!
I don’t even play this game
You should, unless you value your job, your family and your sleep lol
Michael Hendriks
Ik, its exactly my genre n from what i got so far (online and friends) it’s one of the best in that category. Am working overseas at the moment and only have two hotwired potato’s to play on so it has to wait for half a year..
But hey, I’ll be back here once this game crashes my will to live
Talking Mike, I like you more. Don't dissapear!
Congrats on hitting 100k (i know im late) i wosh u will hit 1m quickly
Congrats on 100k
Nice Video i enjoy it very much!
However... the fact that you upload pretty rarely is less than ideal.
But i think if your channel grows (Like its doing right now) you will probably make videos more frequently.
Anyway, have a good day!
These kind of videos take so long to make... I have been thinking about doing a "side project" where I just let's play and upload the material with minimal edits... But I don't know if that'd be very interesting, for now I decided it wouldn't fit my channel. What do you think?
@@MichaelHendriks I really like the niche videos you are putting out! Quality before quantity in my opinion.
@@MichaelHendriks i'd say keep it quality over quantity
@@MichaelHendriks Well i personally like your editing and the little Story you work into it, but if you want you maybe could try uploading a Video with less edits. I would enjoy it, not sure what the other Viewers want though.
Thanks for responding btw :)
@@MichaelHendriks maybe make a playlist with unlisted videos thats raw footage of others?
Thank you for your video!
Ooh... Another upload... Interesting
Watching this just to learn cooler ways to set up my factory. Let alone a speed run lol.
Yeah 100k subs!!!!!!
hey, do you plan to make a new series similar to this? or something like "a road to megabase"?
A 10k spm playthrough is in the cards, but not next up
So close to 100k subscribers!
Can you also do a 100% save? Lazy bastard + no spoon + getting on track like a pro + the rest?
Legend
happy 100k subsciber

Question: What is the hotkey for placing ONE item at a time into a furnace? in order to have 6 coal per furnace? LC opens inventory, Ctrl+LC dumps a full stack, Ctrl+RC drops half a stack, Shift+Click does nothing, scroll wheel and alt+click do nothing?
So far the only way to put only 6 coal into a furnace is to open the GUI, but obviously you have a much faster way of doing it.
EDIT: It's the "Z" key. In old versions of factorio it only dropped items on the ground, didn't know it could be used this way.
Z
A you figured it out, yeah I didn't find out about this change until I watched a Nefrums speedrun lol
FINALLY
I would assume, based on experience, that if your starting area has too much in the way of trees you'll probably just need to restart.
I've had forests completely inundating my starting area before, and it takes waay too much time trying to get rid of them lol.
Nice video man I like your voice
Thank you :) It's a bit scary doing a full voice-over video for the first time, especially because my mic really should be upgraded for this style of video.
Michael Hendriks i am starting a factorio Channel rn. At first I also didn’t talk, but then I had to cut the video to make it interesting. But then I had the idea to just talk so I don’t need to spend like 3 hours to cut the video. The channel is named Endorum.
Michael Hendriks Even though English is not my native language😅
dude you should have DECREASE the volume of the game
sometimes i cant even hear you
Will do for the next part
This is a stressful experience for me, I got a bad seed (after rerolling for not having any coal rock) which spawned very close to a few large nests. Had to skip a bunch of steps, including fishing, just in time to defend my base from each direction!
HE HAS A VOICE
the subtitles in either language just seem to generate random words whenever Michael is talking
Deconstruct the fish xD
I just finished my first run (hadn’t seen this guide yet) and I got 8:10. Words cannot describe how sad I am
Netherlandish(
I tried to use subtitles translator and i hate it, ABSOLUTELY WRONG WORDS, you saying six youtube translate subtitles like you say sEx WTF
Silly question: is the evolution/timer thingy vanilla or is it a mod? I don't find mentions of it anywhere.
EvoGUI mod
Where there's a will, there's a fish 😉
after electronics are researched, what comes next?
ok i rewinded the video and found it
but im 10 minutes late rom the 8 hour pace, so i might have to do it again, i'll continue and if i fall like 20 minutes late i will probably restart. I am late because of a chest full of belts, guess i fed my personal machines too hard, if i'll restart i will make 5 stacks of the thing and stop because automated production is next on the list. If i restart, atleast i have already done the first part once, so i will know how to go about it faster. I think i got lucky because water was right next to the starting resources, but those were bit clumed together, and there were no biters around so i only walked a bit to reveal hidden part of the map and that was my killing spree. But i might have lost it because of oil already, it's far away if i recall the map correctly. If i restart, i'll care more about the map.
So, where is this 'downloadable guide'? I checked pinned comment and video description but failed to spot it...
Didn't have time yet, I'll need to update it later, meanwhile check the last episode for the download link (but it's not yet updated with the content of this episode)
YES
YES!
YES but more
thanks for the vids there so good
I rlly want more minecraft vids :(
Why so many burner miners if you feed them so little? When I try the guide, they spend a lot of time doing nothing while I wait for the remaining ones to make enough plate for the next step. (After multiple tries, I still fall unrecoverably far behind in the first hour. Most of it is tiny inefficiencies, clicking on wrong thing, not bringing enough (even though you told us how much to bring).
To produce enough resources quick enough (coal for the boilers, iron for base building stuff, copper filling science assemblers e.d.). You can try the savescum method: save as Spoon001, Spoon002, etc. Do something, then reload the previous save and do it again, you'll do it much faster the 2nd time. Also, you can return to any previous point if you don't notice a major fuckup until half an hour later. Good luck!
@@MichaelHendriks Thanks! Each time I do a bit better. Current I've played for 17 minutes, but only at 12 in the guide. Not quite behind enough to give up, but won't be easy to catch up, esp since fighting is next and I'm very slow at that.
On the positive side, a lot of the 'fighting' time is actually 'walking towards the next nest' time, so maybe you'll lose less time than you think
Can you increase the volume of your voice compared to the music for future videos? Music is drowning your wonderful voice out a bit
Will do
mh... i thought i can do that 8 hour achievement. I started like this guide tells me to do but iam at 12 min after the 1st burner phase. Had to run around for some Coalstones and wood, barely any wood on the map. mh..
Iam trying to follow this "comprehensive guide" but without a playlist or episode number they are all completely out of order.
Here you go (thought I made one but apparantly not):
ua-cam.com/play/PLDgN0w4z4q0yU4lVjSkop5n3uAhY0TxGu.html
morerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
im like 10 mins behind the 8 hour time.
Does this guide still work in 2.0?
probably yes
99.9K subs
17 mins in the video and i somehow already lost 3 minutes even without me needing to go for the biters as i play with beter settings.
you should play mindustry :))))))))))))))))))))))))
The music is so loud I can barely tell what he's saying. :(
Next video is better (first time experimenting with new style)
@@MichaelHendriks Awesomesauce.
Cool
Thanks :)
any tips for doing this as a lazy bastard?
Yeah, first do it without lazy bastard, then make a list of everything you needed (like how many blue inserters and such), then on the lazy bastard run you can often make the entire batch at once by handfeeding assemblers instead of automating everything (if you use premade blueprints for automating base building stuff, that would work too if you set the appropriate chest limits and move the limiter back every time you take from the chests)
daisy chain labs loses science? Really :o
I think it's been fixed meanwhile
That was so easy back then. It should be more like 2-3hours not 8.
This is a guide to reliably get the achievement for normal players, not a guide for elite speedrunning
I really wanted to watch this video, but the audio mix is just terrible. Turning up the volume enough to hear your voice makes the sound-effects way too loud.
Thanks for your feedback. I'm on the lookout for a better mic, I'm already turning up the voice volume and turning down gama audio as much as I dare to, but I agree the audio quality is a bit meh
@@MichaelHendriks The game audio is effectively worthless compared to your voiceover. If you can't increase your mic volume, just decrease the game volume instead? I don't see what the downside of halving the game volume would be here.
FUCK YEAH a voiced video. i already gave up all hopes. there is so much good stuff on ur channel but i can barley watch any of those bc i absolute hate to read while watching a video (i am lying in bed right now and dont want to do anything taxing). You need to balance sound better though. Game too loud and u are too quiet
More people have said that, I will try to balance the sound better in the next part
ليش ما تنزل ماينكرافت
no offense but i missed text mike .-.
He has just a side-role in this series, but he will be back! Because it's a speedrun-like video, I found there's just too much going on to not miss half the video while reading text
its a mix of talking and texting mike. isnt that a compromise? Please dont go talking mike
TSSSSJJJJ
انتى شبيك بس تلعب هاي لعبة
These auto generated, trnaslalted english subtitles are hilariously nonsensical!
HEEEEY that's pretty good! :D
