Self-imposed rules:
DEFAULT MAP SETTINGS (no tweaks, so biters on, research Q off (why god why), etc)
NO BLUEPRINTS from the blueprint library/other games
NO BOTS, no trains (self build everything, not even personal roboport!)
NO TURRETS! (at all! Yes, also no gun turrets!)
Map generation:

Playing on a random map?
Most important features:
Can you build without obstructions? (cliffs, forests, water, nests)
Are there enough resources nearby? (oil, extra iron and copper)
Secondary features (bonus points but not requirements):
Do the starting resources not overlap?
Are there forests which absorb pollution?
Are there not too many enemies?
Roughly plan out how your base is going to look:
Main bus area
Smelting area
Power
Oil processing
Secondary resources hook up
Memorize where the nearby nests are outside the starting area
(so you can guesstimate if any off-screen pollution is reaching the nests)

A bit of a midgame update: I am currently 22 minutes behind the worse limit of the 8 hour pace at the Nah, let's stink up the place anyway mark, and i already have placed all of the furnaces. When i last quit playing, i was like 40 minutes behind. What am i forgetting?
I built the solar panels, put the green modules into miners, refineries, and even into the far away behind forest oil mining outpost, i've put 10 batteries to cook on some sulfuric acid, 150 miners are almost crafted, and robotics research is finishing as of the time of my pause. I'll check in another save.
But my iron belts are catastrophical, there is like 7 plates per six belts. Production is not 0, but still it's bad. If there is a mining expansion for iron coming (i hope, with the 150 miners), i might skip to that.
i think i misread the labels for time. My iron is catastrophical, and i'm like 40 minutes behind.
But i think i'll finish the run to learn the endgame stuff, i have the refineries already piped up, so that might mean something, and i will do the iron expansion before i continue with anything else.
Blue tech era? More like efficiency module era. "GET ON WITH IT!"
(but seriously, the modules are a very good gameplay tip and it made for a fun segment nontheless)

I started the series thinking "maybe I can do this" bit now I'm just like "not that simple huh". By the end of the series I'll have already given up on trying haha
The trick is to follow the steps one at a time, reviewing the video of each step as you do it. Even then, don't expect success on your first try.
