Most of the retrogaming community like to dismiss puzzle games, but I had a lot of fun playing Tetrisphere at a friend's house as a kid on his mom's N64.
After putting in a lot of playtime with my N64 over the year my budget picks for games that are IMO worth your time now, replayable and hold up well today are: WCW NWO Revenge (WWF NO Mercy too expensive ATM) Waverace 64 NFL Blitz (Any version) Extreme G ( Mentioned here in this video) Gretzky Hockey 98 ( slightly better AI than the previous game for defending the net in particular) Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Blast Corps. .....finding all the hidden cars Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky and Hutch and A team van Wave Race .......finding settings for double flips off jumps and setting record scores for courses Milo's Astro Lanes ......learning that your power ups can be used against opponents
Ridge Racer 64! It's one of the best versions of Ridge Racer out there and it has a TON of secret cars to unlock. And damn they can be tough! Smooth framerate, nice looking graphics, great music. I can't think of a better single player racing game on the system.
@@themoststupidpersonwhoever4891 As you approach a turn, release the gas. Then press the gas and turn simultaneously. Don't hold the turn direction for too long as you'll begin drifting immediately and the longer you hold it the more severe the drift.
Tetrisphere began its life on the Atari Jaguar (under a different name), but sadly never got released. Looks nice on the N64, I must try it out sometime.
Jet Force Gemini such a great game. Good memories as a kid playing it. I do play it sometimes on my Xbox one lol I haven't seen it lately but last time I checked Hybrid Heaven was still cheap and such an under rated unique game. I really wish it got a remaster but for N64 it's a good overlooked game
Absolutely awesome. I'm always looking for fun affordable games for the N64. The only game I have on this list is Robotron 64. Its a really fun and addicting game.
World Driver Championship!!! Very underrated and arguably the best racer on N64. Great music, Great environments, great sounds effects, great use of rumble pak, great selection of cars tuned differently to your liking without all the extra mumble jumbo. Very challenging fun.
Jet Force Gemini is one of the best games on N64 period, from the ctrl system which floats from 3rd person to first person for combat to almost arcade shmup type pattern shooter it's epic, to the fog free environments to massive boss battles it's epic. Top tip: Play it hooked up to a sound system because it's soundtrack is awesome and the style warrants it. And yes it does also have movie references.
@@flamingwoodz The didgeridoos when you walk through the first door after landing are just brilliant and from then, right at the beginning you knew the game was special. I can't remember the name but I think my favourite level from an aesthetic viewpoint is the sci-fi base you assault, on the outside with all the blues and crisp lines it just looks like you're in a movie.
@@christopherkelly577 That's true but you need to bare in mind how much technical support they received from Nintendo who supplied coders as well as engineers from SGI borrowed from Lucasarts(Lucasarts themselves were shocked by how much technical support Nintendo supplied Factor 5, effectively Rogue Squadron, Pod Racer, Battle for Naboo etc, every game after Shadows of the Empire in fact, was effectively co-developed with Nintendo) who engineered the N64 as well as supplying the SGi workstations Nintendo purchased for Rare in exchange for 20% of their equity. Rare were shocked that Nintendo didn't buy them out because that is what they wanted before MS intervened. Nintendo instead sold their equity to MS which facilitated the buy out and put the money into buying Retro Studios instead, a big gamble as at the time Retro had never even released a game.
SW Racer is one of the best racing games of all time. The fact that you race on a new track EVERY SINGLE RACE might make it shorter than other racing games... but also A LOT OF FUN. You never find any "repeat this lap 10 times again... but now in reverse!" in this game. And besides 1 bad track... they are all simple a joy to drive/fly through.
Wipeout 64 was a FANTASTIC game. If you like future racers, that one is an awesome one to check out. It had great graphics and an awesome soundtrack that sounded amazing for a cartridge based game. I really believe it was one of the best racers at the time. Loved the PS1 Wipeout series and this was a great addition to the series on the N64.
The only downside that I remember about Wipeout 64 was the limited number of tracks and only 5 songs in the game. In a few days I experienced everything the game had to offer. I liked it, but was disappointed at how tiny the experience was.
I actually bought a Nintendo 64 recently, so this video couldn't have come at a better time. Jet Force Gemini and Episode 1 Racer actually came with the one I bought. I'll definitely have to check out the other video.
Great video John! I have Robotron 64, Star War Episode 1 Racer, and Jet Force Gemini, and I agree these games are still enjoyable today! My picks (not in either of your videos) would be: California Speed, FIFA 64, Knife Edge Nose Gunner, and Glover
Tetrisphere I played alot back in 2000 and pilotwings. And I just picked up Wayne Gretzky in a bundle and that is the game I am playing the most at the moment. Gotta say this is a good list nice work
Extreme-g 2 was one of game on my "childhood" on pc... Well. I was actually surprised when I discover that it was on n64... And it's one of few games that end up in this situation) I have Japan version of it... And somehow it end up to be rare in that region.
I got the 2nd one and it’s the only one I’ve played. I’ve heard the music in the first is better but the 2nd has much more impressive visual effects and more voice. Been meaning to try the 1st game sometime to compare.
I would LOVE a Switch Pilotwings. The whole series is such fun but I absolutely spent the most time with Pilotwings 64 thought Resort on the 3DS is quite amazing as well. Jet Force Gemini was great on the N64 but I admit I did not get that far into it until I got Rare Replay for the Xbox One (literally the reason I bought mine in the first place haha). And I am STILL horrible at Tetrisphere 😂
The only store I trust selling used games is GameStop they return things if you have a problem for a full refund in cash or back to your credit card since GameStop doesn’t sell Nintendo 64 games next to me I might not buy these I’ll just buy Nintendo Switch games instead
Wayne Gretzky 3D was the second of two games I got on the dat I got my N64 along with Mario 64. I spent a lot of time playing it and it is a really fun game and would also recommend it to anyone who likes arcade sports games such as NBA Jam/Hangtime. A classic N64 game in my opinion. Also Star Wars racer is a nostalgic game from that era. The Pod racing is literally the best part of that movie when I was a child and I probably rented that game multiple times and enjoyed it.
I would also add the Gex games, Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero, Forsaken 64, Extreme-G 2, Waverace 64 and Excitebike 64 to this list as they're all fun games that go for around the $20 to $30 range and sometimes under and are still very affordable.
I liked Jet Force Gemini until it became a full-on collectathon. It's a wonderful action game, but not one I'll ever complete. I had to play it on a certain emulator to fix its cruddy framerate. Same for Pilotwings 64 and many others. Great picks, John. Enjoyed the vid.
That’s actually the reason why I’m hesitant on getting JFG. Heard that some of the guys you have to save are in nearly impossible places to get to in the later levels as well. I’m ok with collectathon games but if a game over does it I just get overwhelmed.
Tetrisphere wasn't really overlooked and definitely needs another one made. An overlooked puzzler was Wetrix and Wetrix 2. Those were awesome and challenging.
Great picks for the 64 John, some I had no idea existed. I couldn't agree with you more on the increasein cost in the video game collecting world. If your persistent, you'll find something great in the wild. The consistency of that may not be what it is today but when you do, it's very rewarding. Awesome job with the vid! 🤟🔥
Not too expensive loose but I highly recommend Mischief Makers for the N64. its a fun 2.5D platformer from Treasure who are responsible for the Gunstar Heroes games on the Genesis. Its a great game where you play as a robot girl on some weird planet that has to save her inventor from being kidnapped by grabbing and throwing around your enemies and bosses. Overall, its a fun and pretty fast paced game that really utilizes the N64 controller well
The N64, itself, was an awesome console. I would even go as far to say it’s probably my favorite, even though the library is small and most games for it are over priced now.

I was at the local game store and the N64 selection as usual these days was wiped out. If was down to sports games and several Tetrispheres. I don’t know why people are sleeping on Tetrisphere it’s an amazing game and probably top 10 For me on the console.
