I love how even though this seems like a huge no no, like it might horrify nail techs, you didn't shame the client at all even when talking hypothetically. You're very kind Suzie.
I really value kindness. Not niceness, nice can be a front, it can be weak, and it's a descriptor. But kind is a strong action, a choice. And you are kind.

I think the most important thing Suzie demonstrates in this video is how to be kind to your clients even though they do something that frustrates you. I stopped seeing a nail technician because she just was so nasty to me about how my nails would look when I came in, like she resented me living my life because she had to deal with my nails.

You didn't treat her 'masterpieces' the way she felt you should, in other words. She should do miniature paintings for art galleries instead of being a nail tech. Nail art is by definition temporary art, even though it absolutely can be breathtaking art.

Hi Mari, I'm so sorry! That's wrong on so many levels. My guy, who was great at his job, complained incessantly about how particular his clients are. That irritated me, because I'm one of those "particular" people. But he was so good, I bit my tongue and stuck with him. Then he sold the salon and his sister is running it now. She is so pushy. One nail breaks or lifts and she pushes me to buy a new set. One nail, all she had to do was file the lift away, and she wouldn't. She said you need a new set, and I said, no, I don't -- I need you fix my nail. She said Ok, but if you get a fungus, it's not my fault. I flipped out when she looked me in the eye and said that. *Whose* fault is it?! I, sort of, let her have it and told her off. I have a little pre-prepared speech for these moments, because I was a nail tech in the 90s and I know how to prep and sanitize to avoid that. So I politely called her out on it. But I was livid, and I did it in front of a full salon of people who heard it all. She just put her head down and fixed the nail like she is supposed to do and never said another word to me, but I won't be going back. I'll do my own nails.

When you were talking about why you wear a mask and the client doesn't I think a point to add to that would be that the client is in the salon for a short period of time and really exposed to only a very minuscule amount of dust whereas the technician is there all day and exposed for a lot longer so being able to mitigate the dust inhalation for the tech is very important.

as a side comment on your mask and the filing dust, i always thought of it to be similar to doctors and x-ray machines. for a single patient/client a small amount of exposure during a consultation isn’t very harmful, but the doctor/nail tech is exposed to it constantly throughout the day, every day, for the entirety of their career. so doctors tell you the x-ray is safe for you while they walk to another room, and the nail tech wears a mask to protect from breathing in endless amounts of acrylic dust. the doctor doesn’t die from radiation poisoning and the nail tech saves their lungs from permanent damage 😄 thanks for the informative video suzie, as usual!!

Suzie!! Just had the worst experience. I had a set done, stiletto. After a couple days (5) I wasn't liking some things so I went back in to change the shape and length. The tech clipped the nails down then took her fingernail and tried to seperate a corner of my nail from the product left on the nail. She then took a new nail tip and ran it between my nail and the acrylic to remove the rest of the acrylic. It hurt so so bad. She took off layers of my nail plate in places. When I told her she was hurting me and asked why she wasn't using the efile she got angry and told me that the file would damage my nail. She was so rude because I was in pain questioning her method as I've never seen anyone do this and it was hurting. Such an awful experience.. Never going back there.

@@NailCareerEducation I know soaking off a whole set is time consuming and costs more, but would it be easier just to replace the couple nails that were glued? If I have a nail that popped off or lifted, I usually remove that single nail before going to my appointment. Should I just let my tech file it down instead?

My grandmother was an old-fashioned "beauty operator," in her own vernacular of the 1920s. She always wore stockings with open-toed shoes, even in her salon. She once had a hair "splinter" that broke off at the skin and took YEARS to eventually dig out of the middle of the corn that formed around the hair. It was between the first and second "balls" of her right foot! I've had a few embedded hairs in my feet over the years. They are usually coarse dog hairs, but luckily I've been able to get a good grip on each of them and removed them before they caused me any problems.

I never knew such things existed either until got one after cutting my boys' hair. Three days later I walked through the room barefoot and honestly thought I'd stood on some glass it hurt so much. Hobbled through to the living room to take a proper look expecting to pull out a splinter of glass and was amazed to pull out a hair! I didn't even think it was possible for a soft, flexible hair to cause that much pain!

I’m no nail tech but making sure to remove lifting is definitely the most important thing to know regardless of your “skill level”.
This is why I personally soak off every set instead of doing a fill. I wanna be 100% sure that I remove ALL the lifting. Plus for me it takes forever to file and re-prep the nails. In that time I could have easily soaked off the entire set and started with fresh naked nails. ♥️

Suzie, I had a dog hair sliver that migrated really far into my baby toe. I dealt with it for a month while a doctor and a podiatrist tried to figure out what was going on. Xrays and 3 rounds of antibiotics...conveniently I had decided to do a baby foot peel for the first time while this was going on. Four days later, my feet were peeling big time and I pulled a little skin off of that toe and found some pus. I had my mom look for me because it was such a crazy angle, and she grabbed the tweezers and pulled out a thick, black dog hair. I wore slippers for a month and a half because I would only put that foot in a real shoe for work, and they came right off the second I clocked out. All because of one little hair

Suzy I’m a nail tech in Utah, and they are implementing a law saying we have to have a desktop nail dust/filter system rated an 8 on the Merv scale.... I can’t find many options and none of them are rated on that scale. Also my salon will not be purchasing this, I will have to buy it so I’m also very nervous that it will be more than I can afford while I’m still building.

You’ve literally taught me and inspired me to do so much nail art 💕 My family and I aren’t the wealthiest, we’re considered “comfortable”. So we don’t really have a lot of money to spend on nail stuff :( but it’s still fun to watch and learn a professional show me how it’s done!! 💕💕
